First Images Of WWII German Submarine Sunk 68 Years Ago In Brazil

The U-Boat was located by the Schurmann Family in July 2011. Almost one year after locating the submarine, the Schurmanns joined efforts with deep sea diving experts to collect images of the U-513. With specialized technology, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) the expedition made a 135 meters dive to film and take pictures of the wreck, for the first time in history.

“After years of research, finally we watched this historical moment. We first saw a shadow then gradually the images became very clear, the submarine is almost intact and whole as if she was placed there to sleep” said Vilfredo Schurmann leader of the expedition.

“The ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) did several dives and with every new image we celebrated this great feat” says David Schurmann, the film director.

It all began in 2001 aboard their sailing yacht “Aysso”, when the Schurmanns a well-known sailing and expedition family in Brazil, was told of the story of a German submarine, sunk in 1943 during WWII in the waters of Southern Brazil.

Vilfredo and Heloisa Schurmann where hooked on the mysterious story and started researching the facts in the National Archives in Washington – USA, Berlin – Germany and in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.

They were granted a license from the Brazilian Navy, and obtained the support of the Santa Catarina Government and UNIVALI University and were sponsored by TOTVS, CPE (Coastal Planning & Engineering) and FUGRO BRAZIL to further the search.

A team of 35 professionals (all volunteers) which included divers, oceanographers, retired officers from the Brazilian and USA Navy & Air Force, archaeologists, historians, filmmakers and the last surviving member of the USA airplane responsible for the U-boat sinking aided on the search.

After 2 years and 18 expeditions at sea, operating Side Scanning Sonars and Magnetometer, on July 17th 2011 on board their adapted sailing yacht “Aysso”, the Schurmanns located the exact position of the sunken submarine.

On March 8, 2012, aboard two ships, the expedition led by Vilfredo Schurmann and a crew of 20, filmed for the first time in history since her sinking 68 years ago, images of U-513. The U-boat is considered one of the WWII submarines sunk furthers away from Germany during battle.

THE UNDERWATER FILMING
The underwater footage of the U-513 was made with a ROV model Sea Eye Falcon Marine, capable of operating up to 300 meters deep, assigned and operated by FUGRO BRAZIL.

S/V “Aysso” and M/V “Thunder” anchored at the location, launched the ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) and with sonar-aided navigation (similar to a ship’s radar – working under water) located the submarine.

The recordings were performed with the ROV camera itself. For best results, HD 3D cameras were also mounted in housings to captured images of the submarine.

HISTORY
The U-513, under the command of the German captain Karl Friedrich Guggenberger, had the mission to sink any enemy vessel on the route between Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. She had already torpedoed three ships, including two Americans and a Brazilian.

The U-Boat-513 sank on July 19th, 1943. Lieutenant Roy S. Whitcomb was on a PBM-VP-74 flying-boat bomber on an antisubmarine sweep and spotted the surfaced U-boat. He ordered the attack. Captain Guggenberger on the deck of the submarine saw the approaching plane, he knew there was no time to submerge and began a counterattack. Whitcomb’s dropped six 225-pound bombs depth charges and the U-boat absorbed the full impact on her hull.

The U-513, 76 meters in length sunk immediately with its 46 crew. 7 men who were on deck where the only survivors, among them the captain Guggenberger.

THE SCHURMANN FAMILY
The Schurmann Family is the first Brazilian family to circumnavigate the world on a sailboat and the only Brazilian family to have done it twice. A household name in Brazil, the Schurmann Family has been active around the world through their online school program, as well as their films and TV programs.

In 1984 Vilfredo, Heloisa and their children left their home, their work and school and set off from Florianópolis, the capital city of the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, to pursue their dream: circumnavigate the world on a sailing yacht.

Their children, Pierre, David and Wilhelm, were 15, 10 and 7 years old. On this first adventure, the Schurmann Family spent 10 years at sea.

In 1997 the Schurmann Family began their second great adventure Magellan Global Adventure. The goal was to retrace the route sailed by Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet, the first complete circumnavigation of the planet. For this adventure, apart from the parents only their son David Schurmann and Kat, their 5-year-old daughter went along. Magellan Global Adventure was followed by more than 1,5 million people, from 44 countries. Every month the adventure’s filmed reports, broadcast internationally, had an average of 40 million television viewers in Brazil and many more around the world. After 30 months, the Schurmann’s yacht returned to Brazil.

The Family members are: Vilfredo, Heloisa, Pierre, David, Wilhelm and Kat Schurmann (d. 2006).

Bryant & Stratton College Online Hosts Free Webinar on How to Write an Effective Resume

March 21 webinar will show prospective students and job seekers how to create a resume that grabs employers’ attention in 30 seconds

Buffalo, NY, March 15, 2012 – Bryant & Stratton College Online, a leader in online associate’s degree programs, will host a free webinar for current and prospective students who are seeking tips on writing a better resume. The webinar, titled “Writing Effective Resumes,” will be held on Wednesday, March 21, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. EDT. The webinar will cover a variety of topics that will help attendees make their resume stand out during the job search process.

Job seekers who attend the webinar will learn the do’s and don’ts of preparing an effective resume. Other highlights from the free event include:

* Understanding resumes as a marketing tool for “brand you”

* The basic sections of a resume and what each section should communicate about a job applicant

* How to identify key strengths to include in a resume and stand out to employers

* How to integrate keywords into a resume to ensure the content matches what employers are looking for

The webinar will be presented by Dr. Kristina Nelson, Online Instructor at Bryant & Stratton College. Dr. Nelson has taught online for over ten years. She earned an M.A. and B.A. in English literature and composition from California State San Bernardino, an M.A. in history from American Public University, an M.S. in psychology from California Coast and a doctorate in educational technology from Northcentral University.

“Resumes are personal advertisements to that should get potential employers excited about the product, in this case the job applicant. Research shows that recruiters only spend about 30 seconds scanning a resume before placing it in a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ pile, so today’s candidates have to ensure their resume gives a good impression immediately,” said Dr. Nelson. “Too many job seekers today view their resume as a tool for highlighting what makes them great, but a resume should focus on the potential employer and what a candidate can do to add to their business. This webinar will teach students and job seekers to view the resume and application process from the employer’s perspective.”

Current and prospective students interested in learning how to write an effective resume are invited to register for the free webinar at online.bryantstratton.edu/webinar/. For those unable to attend, a recorded version of the webinar as well as highlights from the webinar will be available to download at onlineblog.bryantstratton.edu/ after March 21.

StudyAbroad.com Survey Reveals Student Motivations and Concerns When Pursuing a Study Abroad Program

More than half of respondents say a study abroad program’s reputation for a vibrant social and party life is at least a somewhat important factor in program selection; 20 percent indicated that a lower drinking age was also at least somewhat important.

Chester, PA, March 12, 2012 – Recent research shows cultural experiences, the opportunity to live abroad and the ability to travel are very important to college students when it comes to potentially studying abroad. These motivators, along with other findings, were revealed in a February 2012 survey of college-aged students across the U.S. conducted by StudyAbroad.com, the Internet’s leading resource for information on study abroad programs.

The survey, which was completed by 380 students who visited StudyAbroad.com, took note of the factors students find important as they consider selecting a study abroad program, what motivates him or her to do so and what might prohibit him or her from realizing a study abroad experience.

Twenty percent of survey respondents cited a study abroad program’s reputation for a vibrant social and party life as an “important” factor in the selection process. Just over one-third (35.8 percent) consider it at least “somewhat important.” When surveyed about how important a lower drinking age is when evaluating what study abroad program to select, one in five respondents felt it was at least “somewhat important” (nearly 10 percent (9.3) indicated it was “important,” 11.8 percent indicated it was “somewhat important”).

In addition, when asked, “What is your motivation for pursuing a study abroad experience?” and given a selection of reasons, respondents indicated the following were “very important”:

* Cultural (63.1 percent)
* Live Abroad (58.5 percent)
* Travel-Related (51.6 percent)
* Academic (45.3 percent)
* Professional/Resume Booster (45.3 percent)

More than half (53.1 percent) indicated social reasons were “important,” with nearly 30 percent saying they were “very important” (27.2 percent).

The survey also asked students to identify the factor that has the biggest impact on their ability to make a study abroad experience a reality. Nearly 70 percent of respondents indicated it is money; 50 percent of those who indicated that money was the biggest obstacle said they’ll only be able to study abroad if they figure out how to pay for it, one-third are afraid they won’t be able to afford it.

Additionally, the survey asked respondents about graduate study abroad as well. For those considering graduate school in the future, more than one-third of respondents (34.2 percent) indicated it was very likely they would pursue their graduate degree abroad instead of in the U.S.; 10.8 percent said they are planning on earning their master’s degree abroad.

$1 Million Grant from Stabler Foundation to Fund Scholarships at Harrisburg University

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has received a $1 million grant from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation.

Harrisburg, PA, February 24, 2012 – Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has received a $1 million grant from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. The grant will create the new Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund at the private university, which will aid students who meet financial need and academic requirements, and have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and service.

This grant will enable the University to provide talented students far greater access to an HU education and ensure that graduates will enjoy the high-paying, high-growth careers that a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education can provide, says Dr. Mel Schiavelli, president of Harrisburg University.

“The creation of our first endowed scholarship fund is a transformational day for Harrisburg University and for the countless number of students who will benefit in the coming years from this grant,” says Schiavelli. “We are grateful to the Stabler Foundation for this grant and for their belief in our students and our mission. Thanks to the unparalleled generosity of supporters like the Stabler Foundation, our students are receiving a gift of opportunity, a gift that will endure, and a gift for the future of Central Pennsylvania.”

With this grant, the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund will in perpetuity provide need-based financial aid to students.

The first recipients will enter Harrisburg University this fall. Scholarship recipients will be required to do their best to “pay it forward” to future HU students. They will sign a moral pledge to begin contributing to the University’s Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund within five years of graduating or completing military service, or after repaying any legally binding educational loans.

“The Stablers believed that the recipients of financial assistance should recognize an obligation and be encouraged to return that which they receive so others, in turn, may receive similar assistance. The pledge will help to ensure that the Stabler Endowed Scholarship Fund will continue to grow over time and help college students recognize the value of philanthropy long before graduation,” says Ryan T. Riley, associate vice president of development and alumni relations at Harrisburg University.

The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation was established by Mr. and Mrs. Stabler in 1966 and provides grants exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, or educational purposes. Generally, grants are only made to organizations and institutions that are located, or provide their primary services, in Central or Eastern Pennsylvania.

International ‘Moodoff Day’ to Raise Awareness of Smartphone Addiction

In an effort to stop the growing dependence on smart technology, a Sydney-based nonprofit is encouraging people around the world to avoid using smartphones for a few hours on February 26.

Sydney, Australia, February 16, 2012 — In an effort to stop the growing dependence on smart technology, a Sydney-based nonprofit is encouraging people around the world to avoid using smartphones for a few hours on February 26. The organization is urging adults and teenagers to spend from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. that day without using their smartphone.

The unique campaign is already receiving support from people in more than a dozen countries including the UK, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and the United States.

Well-known Australian parenting author Amanda Cox was one of the first to pledge her support for the cause, saying, “I realized I had a problem when I responded to a joke my husband told me with ‘LOL’ instead of laughing”.

“Moodoff Day” is calling on smartphone users to get involved and pledge their support for the cause via their Facebook page and not use their smartphones for five hours on the last Sunday of February.

This is an opportune time to increase awareness of the issue, as people can participate as one of their resolutions for the first part of the year, according to campaign organizer Tapas Senapati. “If you want, you can extend the time until noon, but just don’t browse as soon as you get up from bed without having tea/breakfast or spending time with your family,” he said.

That means no early-morning texting, emailing, Web surfing or getting Facebook and Twitter updates. Instead, Senapati is asking people to donate their time to themselves and their family. They can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, share a conversation or go for a nice walk together-without the distractions of smartphone technology.

While individuals can engage in the “breakfast before browsing” campaign at home with their family, groups can also participate. Schools and universities can encourage students to join the campaign, and organizations can generate awareness among their employees. Officially, the initiative is appropriately named Moodoff Day because of the effect it will likely have on participants. Tapas explained, “When we ask somebody to stop browsing or checking their smartphone for a few minutes, it will probably turn their mood off.”

Smart phones are a ubiquitous part of modern society, with iPhones, Blackberry devices and Android phones becoming increasingly-popular devices at home and work. Moodoff Day is designed to stimulate much-needed awareness about the potential for and dangers of excessive smartphone use, including addiction. Cell phone addicts have the urge to pull out their phone while having a conversation with others, constantly glance at their phone’s screen, or feel anxious if they’re not online for an extended time. A disproportionate amount of smartphone use can also cause a variety of health-related problems, such as trigger finger (tendinitis), cell phone elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome), and wrist and neck pain. In addition, 1.6 million accidents are caused each year by people talking and texting on their phone while driving.

The risk from constant smartphone use is significant among mobile workers, many of whom are required to respond to work-related emails when they’re away from the office. Teenagers are also heavily attached to their smartphones. According to a recent survey by independent communication regulator Ofcom, one out of every three teenagers is likely to use their smartphones during mealtimes, and one in every five is likely to do so during a film or play-and even while using the bathroom.

Senapati was also motivated to launch Moodoff Day for personal reasons. He created the awareness campaign after realizing that he and his wife had become addicted to their smartphones and were interacting less frequently. He feels that reducing smartphone use can have a positive impact on families, as well as the entire community. “We’re not against smartphones, but we want people to use them carefully and not be addicted to them,” he said. “If I can only save one life by this awareness campaign, then I think it will be well worth it.”

50 IAVA Member Veterans Receive Scholarships from Veritas Prep to Help Prepare Competitive Applications to a Wide Variety of Graduate Degree Programs

American Heroes Scholarship Recipients Illustrate Diverse Career Interests of Today’s Veterans

Malibu, CA, February 14, 2012 – Veritas Prep, a leading GMAT prep and graduate school admissions consulting firm, in partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, announced today that it has awarded American Heroes Scholarships to 50 IAVA Member Veterans. These test preparation and admissions consulting scholarships will allow U.S. Military Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan to pursue a wide variety of interests including business, environmental science, history, law, medicine, museum studies, nutrition, psychology and public administration.

“Everyone at Veritas Prep feels honored to award the inaugural American Heroes Scholarships to 50 deserving IAVA Member Veterans. It is our privilege to help these exceptional men and women as they begin their journey to earn the professional degree they need to advance in the military or excel in a civilian career,” said Chad Troutwine, co-founder and CEO of Veritas Prep. “The recipients exemplify the diverse career interests of today’s U.S. Military Veterans. Their inspiring stories remind us that military service and graduate education are a potent combination that can lead to success in many fields. We look forward to furthering our partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to create life-changing opportunities for service members and veterans.”

“Veritas Prep is a national leader in supporting new veterans and has stepped up in a big way to show veterans that they have our backs. They understand the immense potential of this New Greatest Generation. These scholarships will provide valuable opportunities so new veterans can be at their very best throughout the graduate school admissions process. Education and employment are two of our top priorities at IAVA, so this partnership with Veritas Prep is especially exciting,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.

“Since separating from the Army, I’ve decided that I’d like to put the experience and skills I gained in the military to use in a career in business. While military service helped me develop leadership skills, to become a business leader I need the management skills that an MBA would provide,” said Shahriar Chowdhury, former Captain, U.S. Army. “My goal is to go to a good business school, but to do that I need to score well on the GMAT. I’d wanted to take a prep course, but held off because of the cost. I’m extremely grateful to the Veritas Prep scholarship program because now I can better prepare for the GMAT and hopefully achieve the score I need to get into a top program.”

“The four years I spent on active duty as an army medic introduced me to the everyday and often extreme demands of what being a healthcare provider entails. From these experiences, I found my calling to become a physician and scientist, and now wish to delve into the challenging, yet inspiring, world of research and medicine,” said Cameron Waites, former Sergeant in the U.S. Army and current National Institutes of Health research fellow. “But before this dream has any chance of becoming a reality, one particularly important challenge remains on my horizon – getting accepted into medical school. Fortunately, the scholarship from Veritas Prep will provide expert guidance and support, helping me to prepare a strong application.”

Of the 50 scholarships awarded, 31 IAVA Member Veterans will receive a free Veritas Prep GMAT prep course, either in-person or online, and Veritas Prep’s full suite of 15 GMAT course books and extensive resources; 19 will receive six hours of graduate school admissions consulting with a Veritas Prep admissions expert related to the graduate program of their choice. In addition to the scholarships announced today, Veritas Prep is extending discounts to all qualified IAVA Member Veterans; offering 50 percent off Veritas Prep GMAT courses and 25 percent off admissions consulting services.
