Scholarships Became the Major Contributors of Funding for College through the Recession

Since 2010, parents have reduced their spending on college students significantly; instead grants, scholarships, and student borrowing have increased.

Chicago, IL, November 12, 2013 – Since 2010, parents have reduced their spending on college students significantly; instead grants, scholarships, and student borrowing have increased. The use of grants and scholarships has been the largest contributor since 2010.

According to Sallie Mae’s research of “How America Pays for College2013,” “Nearly two-thirds of families (65%) used grants and scholarships to pay for college this year, up from 61 percent in 2012 and up from only half of families five years ago.”

Moreover, scholarships are the only contributors of this year’s increase, since grants for college funding are actually decreasing this year. Numerous scholarship programs and the care of education from society and businesses are the reasons that scholarship awards can still make a huge difference to college funding during the recession.

OCA Chicago Scholarship, one of the scholarship programs in Chicago, has awarded 6 outstanding students this year.  The scholarship helped them achieve their higher education. At this year’s Gala at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza, Anson Wu, VP and board member for OCA Chicago Chapter, introduced the scholarship program to the audience. He remarked, “OCA Chicago Scholarship started with a simple idea that is to help deserving Asian American students to get the education they deserve…” Anson oversaw the scholarship program for OCA for 2012 and 2013.

During the day Anson is the managing Creative Director at a digital creative agency in downtown Chicago, Fresh Design Studio, where he continues to pour creativity into digital assets for client’s brands. He cares about students’ education because he believes in giving back to the community and realizes that the students have such bright futures.

Scholarships are now the major contributors to students’ education. With the help of many different people like Anson, scholarships are the hope of education. Many students can still go to college and make their dream come true, even while the economy is down.

50 IAVA Member Veterans Receive Scholarships from Veritas Prep to Help Prepare Competitive Applications to a Wide Variety of Graduate Degree Programs

American Heroes Scholarship Recipients Illustrate Diverse Career Interests of Today’s Veterans

Malibu, CA, February 14, 2012 – Veritas Prep, a leading GMAT prep and graduate school admissions consulting firm, in partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, announced today that it has awarded American Heroes Scholarships to 50 IAVA Member Veterans. These test preparation and admissions consulting scholarships will allow U.S. Military Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan to pursue a wide variety of interests including business, environmental science, history, law, medicine, museum studies, nutrition, psychology and public administration.

“Everyone at Veritas Prep feels honored to award the inaugural American Heroes Scholarships to 50 deserving IAVA Member Veterans. It is our privilege to help these exceptional men and women as they begin their journey to earn the professional degree they need to advance in the military or excel in a civilian career,” said Chad Troutwine, co-founder and CEO of Veritas Prep. “The recipients exemplify the diverse career interests of today’s U.S. Military Veterans. Their inspiring stories remind us that military service and graduate education are a potent combination that can lead to success in many fields. We look forward to furthering our partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to create life-changing opportunities for service members and veterans.”

“Veritas Prep is a national leader in supporting new veterans and has stepped up in a big way to show veterans that they have our backs. They understand the immense potential of this New Greatest Generation. These scholarships will provide valuable opportunities so new veterans can be at their very best throughout the graduate school admissions process. Education and employment are two of our top priorities at IAVA, so this partnership with Veritas Prep is especially exciting,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.

“Since separating from the Army, I’ve decided that I’d like to put the experience and skills I gained in the military to use in a career in business. While military service helped me develop leadership skills, to become a business leader I need the management skills that an MBA would provide,” said Shahriar Chowdhury, former Captain, U.S. Army. “My goal is to go to a good business school, but to do that I need to score well on the GMAT. I’d wanted to take a prep course, but held off because of the cost. I’m extremely grateful to the Veritas Prep scholarship program because now I can better prepare for the GMAT and hopefully achieve the score I need to get into a top program.”

“The four years I spent on active duty as an army medic introduced me to the everyday and often extreme demands of what being a healthcare provider entails. From these experiences, I found my calling to become a physician and scientist, and now wish to delve into the challenging, yet inspiring, world of research and medicine,” said Cameron Waites, former Sergeant in the U.S. Army and current National Institutes of Health research fellow. “But before this dream has any chance of becoming a reality, one particularly important challenge remains on my horizon – getting accepted into medical school. Fortunately, the scholarship from Veritas Prep will provide expert guidance and support, helping me to prepare a strong application.”

Of the 50 scholarships awarded, 31 IAVA Member Veterans will receive a free Veritas Prep GMAT prep course, either in-person or online, and Veritas Prep’s full suite of 15 GMAT course books and extensive resources; 19 will receive six hours of graduate school admissions consulting with a Veritas Prep admissions expert related to the graduate program of their choice. In addition to the scholarships announced today, Veritas Prep is extending discounts to all qualified IAVA Member Veterans; offering 50 percent off Veritas Prep GMAT courses and 25 percent off admissions consulting services.

April College Scholarship Deadlines Are Quickly Approaching

Getting into college is a very involved process and sometimes the most component is ignored. This is taking note of the deadlines for various scholarship forms. It is imperative to stay organized, keep a list of these and then be sure to abide by the dates listed. According to Dee Cohen, licensed social worker and owner of Socialworkprograms.org , “I have had many counseling sessions with students who expressed extreme frustration that they submitted their admission applications on time but missed out on some important scholarship deadlines that were good fits for their accomplishments. “

There are numerous scholarship programs that the government, corporations and private institutions award. Each one has a different requirement for gpa minimum, ending date of application process and other criteria. For those unsure of what to study, there are numerous Social Work Programs that qualify a graduate for a variety of positions. The April scholarship deadlines are approaching and here are some to be keep track of closely.

The Morgan Stanley scholarship program is for American students who wish to study in a Japanese university. It grants two scholarships worth $7,500 each. Juniors and senior students who are interested in taking up economics and international finance are the ones eligible for this scholarship. The applications for this scholarship are collected and screened by the US-Japan Bridging Foundation and the Association of Teachers of Japanese. The application deadline is on the 8th of April. An applicant has to submit an application form to the Bridging Project Clearinghouse in the University of Colorado.

For those with an interest in health, the Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship should be considered if you are under twenty five, will be an incoming freshman or are in your first year of college now. There will be two different essays required. One covers the question of why a healthy lifestyle is important in school. The other asks one to describe their career plans, goals and personal ambitions. The award is five thousand dollars.

Another program with an April Scholarship Deadline is the Ronald C. Harrell Scholarship for engineering students. This is founded in 1918 by the North Carolina Society of Engineers. It grants North Carolina lucky students two thousand dollars each. The deadline for submission of application is on the 23rd of April.

Other scholarships due in April include the Seabee Memorial Scholarship for military programs on April 15th, Oregon Medical Education Foundation Scholarship due by April 1st and the National Association of Black Journalists Scholarships which has a deadline of April 4th 2011.

These scholarship programs are just some of the numerous ones available. When you visit Ms. Cohen’s blog, you’ll also find out more about male nursing scholarships as well as how to apply for left handed scholarships and scholarships for minority women. Cohen advises one to think out their interests, family tree and associations in order to broaden the search to find additional funding to further one’s education. At http://www.SocialWorkPrograms.org many resources are listed for available scholarships and educational programs.
