SPEAKER’S KEYNOTE TOPICS

• The Importance of the Cybersecurity Framework for Directors and CEOs
An email embedded with malware. Security systems hacked by thieves. Credit card numbers stolen from store purchases. There’s certainly no shortage of examples when it comes to data security breaches and the havoc they wreak on business. No wonder then that nearly a third of CEOs in KPMG’s latest global survey identified cyber security as the issue having the biggest impact on their companies today. Every organization should apply a Cybersecurity Framework for analyzing cyber security, and ideally it should be integrated into an organization’s existing enterprise risk framework. The key is making it part of the mainstream of risk management within an organization. The most innovative companies today have recognized that cyber security is a customer experience and revenue opportunity, not just a risk that needs to be managed. Mr. Perez will explain why this must done across the entire organization and why the CEO and Board of Directors have the most important role to play.

• The Impact of Brexit in the U.K and the World
Companies inside and outside Britain’s borders have warned that the Brexit decision is affecting their businesses, highlighting how the June vote for the UK to leave the European Union is having wide repercussions. The vote roiled equity markets worldwide and led to a devaluation of sterling amid concerns over a prolonged slowdown in consumer demand. The U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union inflicted an immediate blow on the economy as business activity shrank at its fastest pace since the last recession seven years ago. The International Monetary Fund said that it had become less optimistic on global growth, and warned the damage could worsen if confidence falters among investors and companies, as fears abound over businesses and customers reining in spending during a period of uncertainty for the UK as it negotiates the terms of its exit. Mr. Perez will identify the world economies that will feel the lion’s share of the short and long-term pain to come.

• Establishing or Improving a Cybersecurity Program
The NIST Cybersecurity Framework, which was drafted by the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), comprises leading practices from various standards bodies that have proved to be successful when implemented, and it also may deliver regulatory and legal advantages that extend well beyond improved cybersecurity for organizations that adopt it early. Its adoption may prove advantageous for businesses across virtually all industries. Mr. Perez will explain why a proper Cybersecurity Program will build on the analysis of the possible areas of concern, an understanding of the company’s most critical assets, and a thorough review of Information Technology’s policies and procedures when faced with cybercrime.

• Finance in the New Global Economy
Until quite recently, globalization was seen as a one-way street. Multinationals, which led the charge four decades or so ago into growing global markets, were its ambassadors, and American and European workers, whose wages and upward mobility were flattened, were feeling left out. The core idea was that globalization, technological innovation and unfettered free trade would erase historical and geographic boundaries, making the world ever more economically interconnected and alike. Developed economies would come under more and more competitive pressure from eager upstart nations. Now we are entering a new age of volatility. Financiers will become less important, manufacturers more so. Blue collar jobs will go high tech. Robots will replace Chinese workers. Mr. Perez will discuss why finance stands now in front of its biggest transformation triggered not by any of the financial conglomerates that dominate the world today but by obscure startups that could be working already in garages in Silicon Valley, Shanghai, Kiev or Delhi.

• China: To Rebalance or Not to Rebalance
China’s 12th Five-Year Guideline in 2011 included efforts to rebalance its economy, shifting emphasis from investment towards consumption and development from urban and coastal areas toward rural and inland areas. Flash forward to 2016 and the country is exhibiting massive overcapacity in sectors linked to real estate, steel, cement, coal and construction equipment, zombie businesses continue to undermine the sustainability of China’s growth and exports are declining. At 260% of gross domestic product, the country’s overall debt is approaching danger levels. The world’s second-largest economy is now posting its weakest annual growth in 25 years, 6.9% for 2015. To top it all, $676 billion left China in 2015; with so much overcapacity in China, lack of confidence in the future as monetary policy can change tomorrow, why should people keep money inside China? Why should we bet on China? Mr. Perez will bring the answers you are looking for.

• The Biggest Risks for Financial Markets
Constant regulatory changes and technological evolution have transformed the financial landscape so profoundly since the advent of the first electronic networks in the early 1970s. Regulators around the world are now in a race to respond to the evolution of technology in financial markets and prevent its operational challenges from becoming the biggest risk for financial markets. However, when considering technology and the cyber landscape, errors are bound to happen. Financial services firms are expected to have deployed the most sophisticated defense systems against cyberattacks. Trading firms are expected to have controls in place and invest in the technology to keep up to date. Most companies would realize the need of these investments and honestly attempt to implement them, but their IT departments would soon hit a wall, because of direct involvement from senior management and boards of directors. Compliance actions against those who missed their importance will go a long way toward restoring investor confidence and limiting the impact of the biggest risk for financial markets.

• Blockchain and its impact on Finance
Blockchain technology (the software behind the digital currency, Bitcoin) offers an opportunity to overhaul existing business models, including banking infrastructure, approach to settlements and customer interactions. Now it is only a matter of time before the broader financial services and banking industries shift to blockchain and network-based approaches. The application possibilities are endless, improving the way we hold and transfer secure goods from money to deeds to music to intellectual property. In fact, blockchain, as a pure platform technology, may be able to cut out the middlemen (or middle companies) everywhere, even disrupting other disruptors like Airbnb or Uber. Mr. Perez will explain why the question is not whether network business models supported by blockchain technology will disrupt organizations, but when.

• Social Engineering: The “Weakest Human Link” in Cybersecurity
Social engineering involves tricking your employees into breaching security protocols or giving away information, most often over the telephone or via email. Social engineering exploits human weaknesses rather than technology, preying upon people’s propensity towards trust in particular. Often, these exploits are used to gather information to support a more targeted cyberattack, with the initial forays based on the premise of ‘little and often’ so as not to cause concern. Employees at all levels, including senior executives, are vulnerable. Mr. Perez will explain why by improving employee awareness and introducing simple technical measures, organizations can protect themselves against social engineering techniques and the risk of a cyberattack and its potential impact on business, customers and data.

• The Present and Future of High-Frequency Trading
On May 6, 2010, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted nearly 1,000 points, then its biggest intraday point drop ever. The “Flash Crash” revealed the influence of high-frequency trading to mainstream audiences around the world. In fact, over the past 15 years, the global financial market has fragmented: where there were once three main U.S. exchanges, there are now more than 40 exchanges and alternative trading systems. High-frequency trading companies have largely replaced traditional broker-dealers, using algorithms instead of human traders to make decisions in milliseconds, mostly in response to orders made by other algorithms. Mr. Perez will discuss the benefits brought by technology, making trading faster and more efficient, as well as the potential costs brought upon institutional and retail investors.

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites Announces New Wine-Themed Room in Partnership with Award-Winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed by owner and winemaker Ann Hougham of award-winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California.

Carmel, CA, April 27, 2017 — Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed by owner and winemaker Ann Hougham of award-winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California.

Hougham decorated the room in a country vineyard theme, with muted floral print shams and bedskirts on the bed, color photographs of Arroyo Seco gorge and the Mesa Del Sol vineyards, a ladder-back wooden chair and antique, pine-trimmed mirror, wine paintings, a tray with two of Mesa Del Sol’s award-winning wines and two wine glasses.

The room boasts sleek, modern bathrooms with imported Spanish marble. Sleeping areas have memory foam-top beds, deluxe linens, and high-definition flat-screen televisions.

Mesa Del Sol joins 13 other wineries in partnership with Vendange to sponsor wine-themed rooms. From the McIntyre Vineyards’ room with its impressive 100-year-old grapevine section to J. Lohr’s wine barrel on the balcony, every winery’s room offers a signature luxury experience. The participating wineries include: Blair, Cima Collina, Dawn’s Dream, Galante, Holman Ranch, J. Lohr, Joullian, Manzoni, McIntyre, Otter Cove, Tudor, Twisted Roots, and Ventana.

Mesa Del Sol is located on a beautiful upland promontory at the junction of three major watersheds, and is on property that was once believed to have been a stage stop for travelers headed overland to Carmel Valley or up the Arroyo Seco River to the Mission San Antonio.

Since 2000, Hougham has continued to restore the 14-acre vineyard estate and produce award-winning grapes for many celebrated Monterey County vintners. The estate buildings have been lovingly restored, the grounds beautifully landscaped and crops now include fragrant Provence Lavender used in sachets, lotions and oils.

Lean rocky soils nurtured with organic farming practices and irrigated from a thriving trout pond feed the vineyards. The hot arid days of the uplands and cool marine night air of the Pacific provide a perfect setting for the grapevines.

Past harvests have brought Mesa Del Sol accolades; most notably the 2002 Hunter Hill Mesa Del Sol Syrah took “Best in Show” at the 2005 California State Fair Wine Competition. The Syrah was chosen as number one from a field of 2,800 wines.

Current releases have been garnering 90-point-plus reviews from Wine Enthusiast including a 93-point score for her 2011 Syrah. Winemaker Ian Brand, Mesa Del Sol’s winemaker since 2011, handcrafts magic into every bottle.

Current Mesa Del Sol Varietals include Syrah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Dessert Zinfandel and Prima Rosso (a blend of estate-grown fruit).

About Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery

Located on a beautiful upland promontory at the junction of three major watersheds, Mesa Del Sol has been a favorite location for more than a century.

One small stone building, a water house, and a portion of one of our cabins date back to the 1800’s and are believed to have been a stage stop for travelers headed overaland to Carmel Valley or up the Arroyo Seco River to the Mission San Antonio.

Around the turn of the century, a health center with various small cabins was developed. The hot dry pure air of the Arroyo Seco Highlands became a soothing setting for those with tuberculosis and other maladies. Teddy Roosevelt was a visitor and stayed here during that time!

In 1927, California Senator Fred Weybret purchased the property and moved his family here. The main house was constructed in 1936 out of local redwood and Carmel stone. The Senator and his family lived here until his death in 1945 and the land passed on to a noted Monterey County lettuce baron from Salinas, Steve Rianda, and his talented artist wife, Mary.

With their three children, the Rianda family lived on the property, named it Mesa Del Sol, and went on to beautify the mesa, adding a pool and other out buildings and cultivating the grounds and gardens over the next 25 years.

In 1998 another Salinas-born agricultural innovator Jake Hougham, purchased the land. The vineyards were planted and the trout pond was reinstalled at that time.

Since Jake Hougham’s death in 2000, his wife Ann has continued to restore the 14 acre vineyard estate and produce award-winning grapes for many celebrated Monterey County vintners. The estate buildings have been lovingly restored, the grounds beautifully landscaped and crops now include fragrant Provence Lavender used in sachets, lotions and oils.

Dastaan – A Musical Memoir by Santhosh Hegde

The Concert is a soulful tribute to his wife, Suman, that will see classics from the Bollywood Golden Era performed by Hegde and Other Artists at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

Bangalore, India, 26th April, 2017 — Santhosh Kumar Hegde shares a 50-year old tryst with music. The self-taught musician found his teacher in All India Radio and Films. A movie buff from a young age, he eagerly awaited the release of the latest Bollywood movies, and sat back to listen to and learn the lyrics to songs while most of the audience used it as an interval. The first step of his musical career was in 1966, when he performed with a group of local musicians in a stage show, Young Talents’ Night at the Don Bosco Hall in Mangalore, following which, he has today completed over 10,000 performances, including 1,002 stage shows, across the country.

Dastaan is a soulful reminiscent by Santhosh Hegde to his wife, and pillar of support for almost four decades, Suman. In tribute to her birth anniversary, the musical concert would be held at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, in Malleswaram, Bangalore, and would involve engaging performances by Santhosh Hegde himself, along with other talented artists. Presented in remembrance to Suman Hegde and the love and inspiration she brought into the lives of her loved ones, the evening promises to be a magical trip down to the Golden Yesteryears of Bollywood Music.

Joining him in his performance would be his daughter, Mithila Hegde, a filmmaker by profession, who has been performing alongside him since the age of 9. He will also be accompanied by Ahmed Ali, a popular Hindustani/Sufi artiste from Kolkata who has learned his craft from renowned Hindustani vocalist, Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan. The evening would also feature Priya Yadav, who is an acclaimed, versatile vocalist based out of Bangalore. The band accompanying the artist would be a Kerala-based 15-member orchestra that has performed with the likes of Yesudas, S. Janaki, and Unnikrishnan, to name a few.

The concert will be hosted by the multi-faceted Vasanthi Hariprakash, who remains the much loved voice of the Breakfast Show on RadioCity 91.1FM.

Lisa Hazen and Don Dasher Open CycleBar Westgate

For much of Lisa Hazen’s life, she has been immersed in competitive swimming —she is, after all, a four-time All-American swimmer for Stanford University. Her husband Don Dasher is an avid outdoor bicyclist, but not obsessively so.

San Jose, CA, April 25, 2017 – For much of Lisa Hazen’s life, she has been immersed in competitive swimming —she is, after all, a four-time All-American swimmer for Stanford University. Her husband Don Dasher is an avid outdoor bicyclist, but not obsessively so.

So there’s probably a little bit of wonderment on their part that they are now proud owners of an indoor cycling business.

“I’ve been a competitive swimmer my whole life,” says Hazen, who is a partner with Dasher in the new indoor cycling center CycleBar Westgate West in San Jose. “I’ve suffered some injuries over the years and indoor cycling is low impact so it doesn’t hurt me. People often don’t want to go to the gym to work out because they see it as drudgery. But this is fun and it’s a great workout. What could be better than that?”

In fact, Hazen, who has become an avid indoor cyclist since purchasing the CycleBar franchise, says cycling has helped her get back into shape to allow her to swim more. That’s a win-win, no matter how you look at it.

Hazen said she and Dasher, who have both spent the bulk of their careers in the high-tech industry in the Silicon Valley, had been looking into franchise opportunities to augment their income and for long-term security.

Dasher said he took a “serious dive” into the world of franchises, even to the point of working with a franchise consultant.

The couple found that indoor cycling was a growing sport with a positive upside. CycleBar, an emerging concept in premium indoor cycling, seemed like the perfect fit for the couple.

And even though Dasher is an avid cyclist — outdoor, he emphasizes — he found that indoor cycling is a whole different sport.

“I didn’t think I’d like it, I had that purist mentality, I thought indoor cycling was something you only did during inclement weather,” says Dasher. “It’s a different sport and once you realize that, you realize it’s a great cross-training workout. Training at CycleBar isn’t just a rainy-day replacement, it’s an immersive, entertaining cross training experience with instructors and classmates that make the workouts extremely rewarding.”

When asked if taking on a franchise without any experience in that particular field might be a huge leap of faith, Dasher agreed.

“That’s the nature of starting a business of any type, you have to take a leap of faith,” he says. “It could be a Subway franchise, you never really know until you get there. You bring your own strengths and weaknesses to any business.”

Both Dasher and Hazen have spent their careers in high-tech. Hazen is still working in high-tech, while Dasher was the victim of downsizing, which spurred him on to look into franchising and more financial security.

Hazen’s career has included companies such as Oracle, Automated Power Exchange, Medical Accuracy Device Company and Labcyte, which she currently works for.

Born in Sacramento, Hazen graduated from Stanford in 1986 with a degree in public policy. She swam with the Cardinal swim team all four years, garnering All American honors each year.

She met Dasher while they were both doing physical therapy; she was there to rehab a swim injury. Later, they joined forces to participate in a team triathlon event, she swimming, he on bicycle.

Dasher was born and raised just outside Philadelphia and moved to California in 1990, where he also worked at Oracle and other high-tech companies before his layoff.

CycleBar, an emerging concept in premium indoor cycling, has quickly made a name for itself in the fitness community with its unique approach to indoor cycling. Instructors conduct classes in a theater-like setting, complete with music, visuals and lighting that combine to deliver a motivational, multisensory, communal experience as class participants dig deep to meet their workout goals.

CycleBar offers a variety of payment plans including pay per ride or monthly memberships and provides concierge amenities including free towels, shower facilities, lockers and shoes.

Classes take place in a state-of-the-art CycleTheatre, led by CycleStar instructors who motivate their class to reach performance goals. Each ride is added to the rider’s CycleStats, which measures and logs six key metrics to track the progress of their fitness journey. Each rider also receives the class playlist via CycleBeats.

“We brand ourselves as a premier indoor cycling center,” says Dasher. “I describe it as a cross between a boutique fitness center and a high-end spa.”

CycleBar WestGate West, which is scheduled to open on May 4, will be conveniently located in West San Jose just minutes from Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale — within easy reach of people who live and work in these communities.

Dasher says the success of the franchise will depend on getting the word out to those communities.

“It’s a matter of getting out in the community and making people aware we are here,” says Dasher. “We’ll take a conservative approach and let demand drive growth. Eventually we’d like to open in Mountain View and Santa Clara. That’s the plan.”

Pop Singer-Songwriter Jonathan Cavier to Release New Single, “When You Come Around,” On April 21

“When You Come Around” is the first single from Cavier’s upcoming full-length album, Blue Room.

Los Angeles, CA, April 23, 2017 – Pop singer-songwriter Jonathan Cavier is preparing for the release of his brand new single “When You Come Around” on April 21st, 2017. This is the first single to be released in anticipation of Cavier’s second solo album, Blue Room, which is slated for release May 12, 2017. “When You Come Around,” written and produced by Jonathan Cavier and mixed by Jason Losett, features a delicate combination of atmospheric keyboards and shimmering acoustic guitars. “When You Come Around” is a song about loving someone with all your heart and being willing to do anything for them even if they aren’t always right by your side. Cavier vocals, which are bursting with emotion, are accompanied by light, airy instrumentation, painting a vivid picture of being deeply in love.

The ten songs on Blue Room follows in the tracks of Cavier’s first solo album Premier to merge his varied pop and rock influences from the 80s, 90s and today into a sound all his own. Extracting elements from a wide range of sounds and unique instruments, Cavier continues to “transport listeners to colorful three-minute worlds” on Blue Room through his composition, lyrics, and eye-catching visual accompaniments.

About Jonathan Cavier:

Originally from Northern California, Cavier (pronounced “cav-AIR”) has been based in Phoenix, AZ for several years and performed for years as Alan Clark in atmospheric pop duo EyeTalk. Over the course of ten years and five albums, this venture saw Cavier’s music reach audiences as far-flung as Italy, the UK, and Australia. After five albums and hundreds of shows played throughout the US, Jonathan Cavier has reimagined himself and has formed a new musical identity on his debut solo album Premier. In addition to his musical endeavors, Cavier is a semi-professional tennis player and a member of the USTA and IFT. Cavier says that practicing and playing in tournaments is like “the fountain of youth.”

Dr. Michael Obeng will be presented with the GUBA Humanitarian Spirit Award on June 3, 2017 in London, England. On behalf of the GUBA Committee and GUBA Advisory Board, the British High Commission, Ghana, is so excited to select Dr. Obeng for GUBA 2017 Awards recipient for his contribution to the standard of living improvements of the underprivileged, in the developing world, by reconstructing deformities and, also, other provisions through R.E.S.T.O.R.E. missions. GUBA 2017 nominees and recognition.

About GUBA Awards
GUBA (Ghana UK Based Achievement awards) is a non-profit Business & Innovation Awards instituted to celebrate, acknowledge, and support Ghanaian based businesses and individuals in the UK. The GUBA Awards is the first ceremony of its kind to specifically recognize Ghanaian achievement and the only awards to be endorsed by the Ghana High Commission in the UK. It is intended as a platform that “showcases and celebrates excellence and achievement within the British-Ghanaian community as well as the outstanding and valuable services provided to Ghanaians in the UK and Ghana”. More recently, the organizers have sought to also involve the wider African communities as they attempt to gain international attention.

The Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards is an annual awards ceremony based in Britain which recognizes the ‘hugely significant’ contribution that British-Ghanaians make to society. The awards were founded in 2009 by UK-based Ghanaian TV personality Dentaa, with the first awards ceremony taking place in London, England, in October 2010.

About R.E.S.T.O.R.E. (http://www.restoreworldwide.org)
R.E.S.T.O.R.E. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit medical service organization that provides free reconstructive surgery and related medical services to children and adults with disfiguring deformities from birth, accidents and diseases. Many developing countries shun those afflicted with disfiguring deformities and look upon them as outcasts or “freaks”. Often their own families hide them from the general public to spare them from either being ridiculed or physically harmed because of their disfigured appearance. Although there is an overwhelming need for plastic surgery in developing countries, these types of surgeries are not available because there are no personnel trained to provide the necessary surgeries. As part of the organization’s mission they seek to educate and train local physicians in the techniques necessary to perpetuate their initial work to continually benefit more people for years to come.
