CELEBRATION ’69, a multimedia, rock and roll experience featuring live music, images and storytelling, is back by popular demand. The show will hit the stage again July 12, 13 and 14 in the Morgan Stock Theater at Monterey Peninsula College as a benefit for the MPC Theatre Company Charitable Trust. Performances start at 7:30 on the 12th and 13th, and at 2 pm on Sunday, the 14th. VIP Experience tickets are available for the Friday evening performance.

CELEBRATION ’69, which played to sold out audiences earlier this year at Hartnell College, celebrates the Golden Anniversary of 1969, the single most amazing year of the 20th century. The show focuses on stories about six of the year’s most iconic historical events, including, among others, Woodstock, the Apollo 11 moonwalk and the Manson family murders. As transitional links, a live band on stage plays medleys of songs released that year including hits from Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Santana and more. And all the while, visual images, both historical and musical, bring the era back to life.

Mark Shilstone-Laurent, the show’s creator and lead singer for the on stage band says of the show, “We try to recapture the essence of that crazy year by flooding the stage with music and images and stories. And although this thing may LOOK like a play, it’s definitely more of a party. We’ve chosen songs we think audiences will be familiar with and we encourage them to sing along whenever they like. And if the performances earlier in the year at Hartnell College are any indication, audiences aren’t the least bit shy about joining in!”

The show features photos from the collection of rock photographer/journalist Stephen Robert Caraway who passed away in 2015 but left a treasure chest of iconic images from rock and roll’s biggest stars dating all the way back to 1967. The show is a memorial to Mr. Caraway’s photos as well as his spirit that never really lost track of what the 60’s tried to be all about – peace and love.

Again, Shilstone-Laurent, “Although CELEBRATION ’69 plays right into the wheelhouse of the Boomers who lived it, it’s a show for anyone who may be curious as to why the 60’s and its music are considered such a big deal – or for history buffs that understand just how crazy unique 1969 was, and want to relive it both musically and historically.”

For reservations, go to mpctheatre.com. Or you can call the box office at 831-646-4213. For more information and to view photos from the Hartnell performance in February, go to celebration69.com.

Holiday Retirement launches bedtime “story drive” to re-ignite cross-generational storytelling

Selected stories to be published in illustrated children’s book available this winter

Lake Oswego, OR, June 06, 2015 — Remember those tales your grandparent would tell you before bed that captured your imagination, taught you valuable life lessons, and built warm, everlasting memories? Holiday Retirement remembers and has launched a national “story drive” to collect those original tales, anecdotes, and fables that have been handed down from generation to generation.

The leading senior living provider invites every generation, from seniors to children, to share their stories at sharebedtimestories.com. A selection of the stories submitted will be published in an illustrated children’s book available this winter.

“We have the good fortune of hearing marvelous and imaginative stories from our residents each and every day as they share them with children, grandchildren, and members of our Holiday family,” said Kai Hsiao, president and CEO at Holiday Retirement. “We want to ensure these stories don’t get lost. That’s why we’re thrilled to host the sharebedtimestories.com initiative.”

Because digital media have become the predominant communications platform for Americans, less time is spent telling and reading stories. According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American reads only 19 minutes a day, and teenagers spend a meager 4.2 minutes a day reading. At the same time, a report from Nielsen shows that the average American adult spends 11 hours per day with digital media.

Recording stories and sharing them with younger generations is vital to preserving family legacy. Without capturing family stories, oral history can be lost in three generations, according to an expert from the National Archives.

Holiday Retirement is accepting story submissions until Friday, July 17, 2015. Individuals interested in submitting a story can find tips for gathering an original story from an older adult and turning it into a publishable tale at sharebedtimestories.com. Once on sale, all book proceeds will benefit the National Center for Families Learning, a charity dedicated to helping improve family literacy.

The children’s book produced from the submissions will include a selection of the stories and also serve as a tool to help children gather their own tales from different generations. A resource found at the close of the book will offer a how-to guide to help children encourage older friends and relatives to share their stories.

“We want to create opportunities for people of different generations to sit down and connect in a meaningful way,” said Jamison Gosselin, vice president of marketing, communications, and resident enrichment at Holiday Retirement. “This initiative not only captures stories, it creates an outcome – a book – that adults and seniors can share with the children in their lives for years to come.”

How to submit
Visit sharebedtimestories.com to submit a story. All story submissions must be no longer than 600 words. All stories must be original; no copyrighted material will be accepted. Adults may submit stories on behalf of children under age 13. Read the rules and regulations for the terms of the campaign. Individuals whose stories are selected will be notified at the close of the campaign in July 2015. For questions about the submission process, contact sharebedtimestories@gmail.com.

Storytelling Mom and Grandma Creates Children’s Adventure Series

Alyce Joy Rininger is ready to release Ka-Boom, the first in what she hopes to be a series of books about Sprunetta Brunetta, a fairy nicknamed “Sprout” from the fictitious town of Spritesville.

Houston, TX (USA), Tuesday – July 17, 2012 — For decades, Alyce Joy Rininger has been writing and telling tales to her children and now grandchildren. The Ohio woman said she was in grade school when she discovered how much she loved to write. Rininger is ready to release Ka-Boom, the first in what she hopes to be a series of books about Sprunetta Brunetta, a fairy nicknamed “Sprout” from the fictitious town of Spritesville. Ka-Boom will be available through Halo Publishing International.

“I hope every child who reads my stories will look forward to each new adventure as Sprout becomes entangled in many, outrageous happenstances,” Rininger said.

“This is a delightful character and a wonderful story for families to share,” said Publisher Lisa Umina. “Rininger’s book will be enjoyed by many as they fall in love with little Sprout.

The author and her five siblings grew up in Akron, Ohio, where their father worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Rininger graduated from Kenmore High School and found employment at a few different Akron companies before meeting her husband, Arland, at a roller skating rink. The couple owned and operated Valley View Lake Park Recreation Area, a swimming and camping facility, for about 20 years.

The author said her husband encouraged and helped her get a booklet of original prayers published at an Akron-area printer and numerous copies of Priceless Gems were sold. She loved writing so much that she enrolled in a long distance learning course from the Institute of Children’s Literature located in Connecticut. And now, years later, she’s focused on creating a variety of story lines involving Sprout.

“I’m ready to fly,” she said. And, Rininger is again getting plenty of encouragement and help from her family and friends, particularly a daughter and granddaughter who have assisted her with learning new computer skills.

She recently presented Ka-Boom to educators and children in the Highland Local School District near her residence in Sharon Center Township, a rural community west of her hometown.

“This is a charming book that incorporates a magical fairy, adventure and a great message about having a positive attitude,” said Sharon Center Elementary School Principal Connie Marzullo. “This is a perfect bedtime story that is bound to be a real page turner.”

Rininger plans to share Ka-Boom with her high school graduating class who will host a book signing. She also is scheduling book signings at area libraries and schools.

Law Student Inspires Youth to Use Their Talents for Good

Law student Matthew Hebebrand’s passions include reading, storytelling and writing, and he plans to inspire other young people to find their own talents and use them to make the world a better place.

Houston, TX (USA), November 03rd, 2011 — Law student Matthew Hebebrand’s passions include reading, storytelling and writing, and he plans to inspire other young people to find their own talents and use them to make the world a better place. His recently published book, The Undergrads, is about students with supernatural abilities and the life-impacting choices they make.

“The Undergrads highlights problems that take place on all college campuses and ways students can solve them,” Hebebrand said. “Starting college can be a scary experience.” In The Undergrads, 10 freshmen at the fictional Pine State University develop amazing abilities after being exposed to a science experiment gone wrong. When someone discovers the source of their powers, each student faces the choice whether or not to use them and begins to discover who they really are, as well as the true meaning of friendship.

“Their powers are metaphors for talents,” Hebebrand said. “It is important for each of us to recognize our talents, understand what we are capable of doing, embrace it and use it, preferably for the greater good.” “Parts of my personality are in all of the characters in The Undergrads,” he said.

Originally a writing project for an honors program class at Miami University where Hebebrand earned his bachelor’s degree in political science, The Undergrads is available through Halo Publishing International. “Halo Publishing International is proud to have a role in getting Matthew’s book into the hands of young people who are seeking inspiration and guidance to become productive, giving citizens of what has become a high-tech, fast paced world,” said Publisher Lisa Umina. “It is my hope that Matthew gets the chance to talk to high school and college age students about what they can do to make our world a better place,” Umina said.

Hebebrand said the college life experience is ripe for storytelling and a school campus is the perfect back drop for a story that readers relate to their own educational journeys. A 2009 graduate of Miami University and presently a Cleveland Marshall Law student in his final year of study, Hebebrand was selected to participate in an externship with Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court, the highest judicial position in the state. The author has made presentations to honors students at Miami University as well as students at his high school alma mater, Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, Ohio. “I encourage people to look inside themselves and make a commitment to follow their dreams,” Hebebrand said.

The Undergrads Inspires Each of Us to Use Our Talents

Law student Matthew Hebebrand has long been a lover of books (especially comics), storytelling and writing, so for him to now be a published author is not really surprising to his friends and family.

Cleveland, OH, January 22, 2010 — Law student Matthew Hebebrand has long been a lover of books (especially comics), storytelling and writing, so for him to now be a published author is not really surprising to his friends and family.

“I write all the time,” said the 2009 Miami University alumnus who recently released The Undergrads. Originally a writing project for an honors program class at his Oxford, Ohio, college, Hebebrand’s book about a group of students with supernatural abilities and the life-impacting choices they make is available through Halo Publishing International.

Hebebrand said the college life experience is ripe for storytelling and a school campus is the perfect back drop for a story that readers relate to their own educational journeys.

During the past several years, Hebebrand has had opinion pieces published in student newspapers and online. A 2005 graduate of Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, Ohio, he plans to return to the school and give a presentation about his book.

“I encourage people to look inside themselves and make a commitment to follow their dreams,” Hebebrand said.

The oldest of Michael and Maria Hebebrand’s three sons, the author grew up in North Royalton, Ohio, near Cleveland.
