Jon saw value in using the Xbox for the library’s summer program so LAN Systems and Microsoft teamed up to donate numerous games for all ages. The Xbox will travel between the three FCPL locations and will be used for a special summer program.

With the Xbox Kinect, the player is the controller. With a motion sensor, facial and voice recognition built into the unit, there are no remote controls or joysticks needed for play. With this mobility, it will be easy for the library to offer the educational fun to each of its locations. And with the wide selection of games, there will be something for everyone.

Girls, their moms and a group of dedicated volunteers participated in the event to teach scientific and investigative skills.

The workshop and badge program taught girls from the 4th and 5th grades forensic science techniques and examination of evidence as they solved the crime scene. Activity stations were used to teach blood, hair and fiber analysis and chromatography. The program concluded with a presentation on dichotomous skull analysis and solving the mystery.

Through programs like the Girl Scout Crime Scene Mystery, women in engineering and technology show girls that math and science is fun and challenging. “This was the second time we presented this program,” said Terry Hart, COO LAN Systems. “It was so successful and received such great reviews that we are looking to expand the activities.”
