Naked Wines named Startups Business of the Year 2010

Innovative online wine merchant wins Startups Business of the Year award.

Online wine retailer Naked Wines , which has recently announced a £10million investment fund to unearth new winemaking talent, has been named the Startups Business of the Year 2010.

The Norwich-based company, which invests in independent winemakers in return for exclusive wines at preferential prices, also won the Online Business of the Year category.

Set-up six years ago to recognise the best of UK entrepreneurial talent, the awards were judged by a panel of 10 UK business leaders including the Toni & Guy Chairman Toni Mascolo.

The judges comments: “Naked Wines has enjoyed phenomenal growth both in sales and registered customers, and gained tremendous brand recognition in just two short years through its clever use of social media marketing, word-of-mouth and celebrity endorsements. We recognised the enormity of this achievement in such a competitive marketplace and commended founder Rowan Gormley and his team not only for the commercial success of the company, but for the business’ mission to fund other independent businesses. At a time when the government is waxing lyrical on the importance of an enterprise-led recovery, Naked Wines is certainly doing its bit, both for its army of loyal customers, and the wider business community.”

Rowan Gormley, Founder of Naked Wines and former CEO of Virgin Money and Virgin Wines: “To win two Startups awards, especially the big one, is an absolute honour. And it’s thanks to two sets of people; thousands of UK wine drinkers, our customers, who took the plunge and trusted us with their money. And our first few winemakers, who trusted us with their wines and adopted a new way of doing business. Since launch, we’ve helped 22 winemakers set up shop, create 85 new wines and sell over 1million bottles between them – and our goal for 2011 is to double this.”

Previous winners include Alliance & Leister, beathhatquote.com , Wonga and Glasses Direct.

Sweet, exotic melon water improves performance at work

Gert Strand AB has, under the brand name Aromhuset, achieved great success with their flavours for carbonated water. There are twenty flavours in the range of 30 ml bottles, all with the same healthy qualities of zero sugar or artificial sweetener, and all fulfilling the stringent taste requirements. The result has been a wide variety of rich flavours, all of which can be combined in endless combinations to create new tastes. The essences are mixed with sparkling water, either home carbonated using a sodastream or shop bought. The essences have been so successful primarily because they are suitable for everybody from children to diabetics and dieters, causing no negative side effects such as sugar shock, dental cavities or increased calorie intake.

Now Aromhuset is launching six of the 20 flavours in larger bottles, developed for workplace water dispensers. One of these flavours is melon, a sweet, refreshing, exotic taste that appeals to most people. The new 270 ml bottle is equipped with a clever pump to make adding the dose simple. For a typical 150 ml plastic cup one pump is enough, while for a half litre bottle 3-4 pumps should suffice. Using this method it is easy to either drink a cup of water on the go, or dose a larger container to take back to your workplace.

The water dispenser at work provides staff with the possibility of topping up their bodies water levels whenever they need to, leading to better health and, not least, increased performance on the job. If you have a dispenser with cold, fresh water, an extra tap for carbonated water, and now also the possibility flavour this water with Aromhuset’s healthy essences, you increase the chances that your employees will remember to – and enjoy – drinking water on a regular basis, thus keeping their senses sharp and maintaining a good mood. Compare this with a cup of lukewarm water from an uninspiring tap, and most people would prefer to head straight for the coffee machine.

Coffee has a negative effect on the water levels in the body as it is a diuretic. It is common to drink coffee at work for a quick “hit” to get refreshed, but it is more likely a sign of dehydration when we start to feel slow. Drinking coffee in this state has the opposite effect, so all employers encouraging their staff to drink water on a regular basis are doing the right thing. One effective way to do this is to offer them fresh water that is both carbonated and flavoured. It is a small investment that quickly yields results.

Salesman for Aromhuset’s products, Thomas Strom, says that having a bottle of Aromhuset’s melon essence next to the water dispenser makes it a pleasure for staff to go there at regular intervals for some well-earned refreshment. Strom also points out that he is on the lookout for new importers for his innovative essences.

Could The Dilemma Of Buying For That ‘Person Who Has Everything’ Finally Be Over?

With only twenty-three days of shopping left to go, things are really starting to heat up for consumers battling against the icy conditions, determined to buy friends, family and colleagues that perfect Christmas gift.

Whilst Christmas wish-lists and dropping the odd hint might go some way to help make Christmas gift giving that little bit more straightforward, each year still poses the dilemma – what to get for the person who has everything?

Thankfully, gourmet gurus – Highland Fayre – think they’ve solved the problem with their range of luxury Christmas Hampers; jam-packed with festive fayre and other goodies to suit absolutely any budget.

Discussing the versatility of Christmas hampers, Highland Fayre’s business development manager – Samantha Barrie – explained:

“The Christmas rush can become a stressful time of year, even for the most organised amongst us. This isn’t helped when you’re attempting to buy for that fabled ‘person who has everything’ or even someone who’s not sure what they’d like for Christmas.

“In situations like these, luxury Christmas hampers serve as an excellent gift; loaded with treats that can be enjoyed throughout the festive season and beyond. Our bespoke hamper service also allows you to tailor your gift to the personal preferences or dietary requirements of the person you’re gifting to and when presented in one of our Christmas gift baskets, trays, hampers or cartons they really make something of a show-stopper.”

The solutions posed by christmashamper.com needn’t stop there either as the flexibility of this style of gift giving means customers can peruse hundreds of pre-made collections at their leisure, from the comfort and warmth of their home.

Furthermore, as Samantha Barrie explains, this year’s Christmas hampers collection could be just the ticket for people buying for other potentially tricky recipients:

“As well a buying for people who have everything, there’s often other people on our to-buy for list who we might not know very well but still want to gift to – a child’s school teacher or long distance relative being a good example of this.

“In cases such as these, Christmas hampers act as a thoughtful gift and can be made as personal as need be. We’ve found that our range of Scottish Christmas Gift Hampers, for example, are particularly popular with people gifting to Scottish expats who may have lived out of the country for some years now but are still delighted to receive a gift reminding them of where they grew up.”

Naked Wine Angels to invest £10million in the great unknown

www.nakedwines.com announces a £10million investment fund to support talented winemakers looking to break into the UK.

UK online wine retailer Naked Wines , which celebrates its second birthday this week, has announced a £10million investment pot to unearth new winemaking talent in 2011 – a 50% increase on this years investment fund.

The Norwich-based company, which together with its 100,000 customers invests in independent winemakers in return for exclusive wines at preferential prices, was launched in the depth of the recession by former Virgin Money and Virgin Wines Founder Rowan Gormley.

Since launching, we’ve helped 22 winemakers set-up shop, create 85 new wines, and sell over 1million bottles of their wines and our goal for 2011 is to double this.

The majority of the money will go towards our existing winemakers who are looking to further improve the quality of their range and the rest will be used to attract new winemaking talent to the UK, who don’t have the cash-flow or support network to do so.

One couple to benefit from Angel investment is husband and wife team Felipe and Constanza Garcia of Bravado Wines, Chile. The pair raised the funds to go it alone when over 1,000 Naked Angels pre-ordered 18,000 bottles of their first solo vintage in one afternoon. They then went on to win the Best Sauvignon Blanc trophy at this year’s Wines of Chile Awards.

Naked Wines are marking their second birthday by giving away free Magnums of Felipe and Constanzas Pinot Noir, as well as launching a competition to win a Naked Christmas Party.

Winemakers looking to break into the UK, who aren’t represented by an agent, can apply for funding at www.nakedwines.com/suppliers OR get in touch at suppliers@nakedwines.com

Now Aromhuset’s great flavours are available for the water dispenser at work

As a manager it is important to have alert, focused, happy and thankful employees. To foster company growth it is important to show appreciation to employees and give clear indications that they are important. By offering employees free access to cold, fresh water they will get not just refreshment when they need it, but a clear gesture that their health and well-being is important to the company.

A water dispenser that delivers flavoured, carbonated water is a small investment with a big payoff for the office atmosphere. The dispenser acts as a social hub where people can pause a moment, take a few breaths, exchange a few words with colleagues, and top up the body’s water level. It is a pleasant break that every worker should be able to enjoy at regular intervals before returning to their station feeling refreshed and with renewed focus on their work.

Flavoured water at work is a new concept being launched by Aromhuset. Water dispensers have been around for some time – even dispensers that deliver carbonated water – but flavoured sparkling water in the workplace is new. There are six flavours in Aromhuset’s selection for the workplace: apple, pomegranate, melon, peach, raspberry and blueberry. They all come in pump bottles containing 270 ml of essence, which is enough for 385 glasses, or 58 litres of carbonated water.

The flavours in Gert Strand’s selection work best in cold, carbonated water, where the carbonation helps bring out the flavours, and water keeps its fizz best when it is cold, meaning these flavours work best in dispensers with both cooling and carbonation units – things most dispensers have today. Strand also points out that he is on the lookout for new importers for his innovative essences.

Gert Strand AB has, under the brand name Aromhuset, previously launched 16 flavours in smaller bottles of 30 ml aimed at private consumers. These have been a great success because of the rich tastes, and the fact they contain neither sugar nor artificial sweeteners – a fact today’s health-conscious consumers are constantly on the lookout for.
