Illustrator, Megan Philips and the author spent many wonderful vacations hiking, fishing and camping with their father and together they have created a beautiful tribute to their father who first introduced them to the wonders of Mother Earth.

In the story, father and son explore the outdoors, the plants, trees and wildlife that live among the woods. While sharing their adventure, the father has the opportunity to teach his son about the importance of nature and how to care for our environment.

YA Novel “The Praying Pond” Explores Faith and the Power of Prayer Through Childlike Eyes

This is what happens to several of the faithful children in first time author Michelle Nadasi’s new book “The Praying Pond.” Visions only appear to children, those with an innocent faith and belief that God will hear and answer their prayers.

“It started with the idea of a lovely pond situated behind a church,” said Michelle Nadasi. “I wanted to write a story that dealt with faith in God but also characters who were dealing with real life issues like moving to a new school, arguing parents, trying to fit in and the inevitable “mean girls” and The Praying Pond” does just that.”

The story is told through the eyes of fourth grader Holly whose family has just moved to town. Although as a family they haven’t previously been faithful church goers they start to attend the local church. After the first service, Holly spots a young girl kneeling beside the pond. She learns that some of the children from the area who have prayed by the pond have seen visions of family members that appear to be answers from God. The history of the Praying Pond goes back several decades, according to the youth minister, Pastor Mark. As the story progresses, it is the childlike faith that Holly begins to develop that help the entire family through the challenges that can occur when moving to a new community, settling into a new job and attending a new school.

“Over the years I have worked with a number of children through the youth programs of our church,” said Nadasi. “I marvel at the unquestioning love children have for God and the power of their childlike faith. They encourage me to embrace that innocence in my faith.”

In the Message transcription of the Bible we learn from Matthew 18: 2-5, which says, “I’m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you’re not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’s kingdom. What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me.”

“I hope that this book will inspire readers to remember what it felt like to first love God. The characters in “The Praying Pond” are relatable and their circumstances are ones that we have all encountered as youth and adults. After all, don’t we prefer to be friends with people who look like us? This is the thinking that leads to harmful words, bully behavior and racism and it is the primary message of first time author, Stacie Sullivan-Simon’s new children’s picture book “I Am Me and You Are You.” Inspired by her desire to create a story of tolerance and inclusion for her children Mason, 4 and Skylar, 12, Simon has written a simple, yet powerful message for young children and their parents.

“When you turn on the news today it seems like we have taken huge steps backward in terms of tolerance and racism,” said Stacie Sullivan-Simon. “I want my children to know that beneath our outward appearance, we are all people of value, individuals who deserve to be treated with kindness, acceptance, and equality.”

Illustrator Chad Thompson has brought the story to life with his colorful drawings that show a young boy and his friends coming to the realization that no matter what we look like on the outside, we are really all the same. The main character recognizes that no matter who we are, we start each day getting washed and dressed, eating a meal and heading to school where we hope we’ll enjoy learning and time with friends.

“I really enjoyed working with Chad, the artist,” said Stacie. “He understood the message behind my story and did such a great job of taking my words and breathing life into them with his wonderful drawings.”

Stacie encourages parents to use books like “I Am Me and You Are You” to help their children understand how hurtful it can be when we judge or bully. “If we focus on what is on the inside, we’ll make it a more peaceful world,” Stacie says.

Stacie recommends that we teach our children to “Stop, Think and Do the Switcheroo and put yourself in that person’s shoes.” This is a great way to remember that before we speak, we take a moment to imagine how our words and actions will be perceived by others and if they are harmful, to switch our thinking and be kind.
