Background on DOGMAN by Marty Goldstein:
Born and raised in San Diego, California, Marty at a very young age became infatuated with all manner of stuffed, furry creatures. Puppy dogs with long ears or short ears, a riot of expressions, and puppies with soulful eyes, soon became his most treasured possessions. As the early years went by, those funny stuffed animals were exchanged for a real live puppy dog who responded to his master with unmitigated love and who made him laugh time and again.

At the age of 62, Marty retired from the stressful corporate world. And after taking numerous sculpting classes found himself eager to create a series of whimsical bronze dogs which he enjoys sharing with anyone who loves animals or who simply delights in beginning each day with a smile or a chuckle. These limited edition bronzes range in size from approximately 4 inches to 50 inches and are developed using the “lost wax process”. The bronze dog sculptures are cast with high quality molten bronze and later have special patinas applied to bring the sculpture to life. This 3,000 year old tradition results in bronzes that owners will cherish for generations.

Marty Goldstein’s dogs have found homes throughout the U.S., Canada, in Europe and in Asia. Renown Hospital in Reno and Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara exhibit the bronzes as an aid to their Healing Arts Programs. The FDR library in New York displays a likeness of Fala, FDR’s prized Terrier.

To date, Marty has sculpted a collection of well over 100 dogs. He says “Whimsical dogs remind me that life sometimes gets too serious and that we need a release. Funny looking dogs do that for me” Look for this collection to continue to expand in the future.

About the Exhibition:
The most remarkable aspect of Huihan’s art is his ability to infuse his painted characters with life and a sense of living history. For this, he is known as one of the pre-eminent narrative painters of this generation. His paintings tell a story well beyond the moment in time that is captured in the image. The people he paints are real. He is dedicated to recording the people of disappearing cultures in their native costumes and at their historical work in the high reaches of the Himalayas. Most of the images for his exhibition at Mountainsong Galleries were painted during recent trips to Tibet. The innate pride, beauty and serenity of the Tibetan people is brilliantly represented in these pieces full of delicate color and light. Liu and Liang are both artists of immense talent. Weizhen combines traditional Chinese art with impressionism to create pieces with soft colors and peacefulness. Weizhen is a Master Artist with the American Impressionist Society. In Huihan Liu’s words, “My passion is to capture the Tibetan culture before it fades … on their journey; their spirit was what inspired me to complete this work.”

Artist Statement:
A master signature member of the Oil Painters of America, a master signature member of American Impressionist Society and an artist signature member of California art Club, Huihan Liu was trained in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in China in 1972 with a BA and MFA from the Academy of Art College of San Francisco in 1989. With more than twenty years of his professional career as an illustrator, teacher, and painter, he won Best of Show Award in the Oil Painters of American Regional Exhibition in 1996. Huihan Liu was featured in Art of the West magazine in 1998, 2003, and 2005; in The Artist’ Magazine in April 1999; and in Southwest Art in April 2000.

Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, is committed to representing more OPA and AIS credentialed Master Artists than any gallery in the world

One of the artists represented by Mountainsong Galleries is Kevin Macpherson To Hold First Ever Plein Air Workshop in Vancouver

Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA, July 17, 2014 – One of the artists represented by Mountainsong Galleries is Kevin Macpherson. Mountainsong Galleries announced today they will be the only gallery in the world to carry Kevin Macpherson’s Reflections on a Pond Series. Mountainsong Galleries has announced that the entire series – all 368 paintings – is now available for acquisition for $1.75 million.

In August 1996, Kevin Macpherson conceived of a series of paintings. The term “series” is perhaps too modest a description for what came to be called the Pond Project. This is not simply a group of works on a theme, nor a one year exploration of a single subject. Rather Reflections on a Pond was conceived as a physical challenge and psychological adventure in which a view out to a nearby pond would be documented on canvas at different times of the day and night, in all seasons. It took five years to complete. Kevin describes the “Reflections on a Pond” series.

Macpherson has just announced he will hold a special Plein Air Painting Workshop called “Capturing Color and Light en Plein Air” on Hornby Island in Vancouver.

The Details:

* September 22-25, 2014

* Plein Air Painting Workshop

* Join celebrated Plein Air artist, Kevin Macpherson. Kevin is author of three bestselling plein air books, Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color, Painting the Landscape Inside and Out, Reflections on a Pond: A Visual Journal, and the soon to be released new book, Light, Atmosphere and Color. Beginners to advance artists will benefit personally from Kevin’s 35 years of experience painting on location, teaching, and concise writing methods.

* The workshop includes four days painting the beautiful, pristine coastal landscapes, personal attention, and group critiques. Challenging lessons, lectures and instructor/demonstrations will fill the days with the “art spirit”. Simplify the chaos of nature with a firm understanding of light and shade. Master color relationships and composition made easy. Forget the formulas and look to nature for the truthful answers. Learn to react intuitively painting en plein air for successful passionate painting. Create a painting that goes beyond merely a picture one that evokes the senses. Engage in artistic challenges and take risks under the tutelage of a passionate well-known instructor. All levels of experience are welcome and the fundamentals apply to all mediums. Return home with a solid grasp of landscape fundamentals and the confidence to release your passion and let your true voice rule. Bring a limited palette, lots of small canvases and a work ethic, but most of all don’t leave home without your sense of humor. Kevin will keep you laughing all the while you learn.

* This is the first time Kevin is teaching in British Columbia. Take advantage of this opportunity!

CLASS INCLUDES:
* Instructor demonstrations, painting en plein air and picnic lunches. Instructor and students dine together to make the most out of this great island experience. The local hospitality will surely make this a memorable workshop.

* Special access to a private golf course along the waters edge and time to relax on the beach, clothing optional. There is something special about an island. Leave your cares on the mainland and just concentrate on the “art spirit”.

* $875 USD. Register online: http://kevinMacpherson.com/workshops

* Reserve your space with a nonrefundable deposit of $300 (Paypal available). Class size limited to 20. The balance of the class fee is due August 29.

* Please call (575) 758-7105 (New Mexico) with questions.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

* Your tuition will be fully refunded if the class must be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Comment from Students:

* Kevin exceeding my hopes. Obviously a master at painting, but equally so as a teacher – that magic combination is few and far between… and let’s not forget to add Stand Up Comedian to the list – bet there is never a dull moment between the 2 of you. I imagine you both are ready for a breather, hope you get one. — SB

* Kevin is a fantastic teacher and creates great examples and demonstrations for his students to understand the information he is presenting while making the experience a lot of fun. Wanda and Kevin are a fantastic team and thank you for organizing the workshop and group so well. – RW

* Kevin, you’re the best teacher ever and so generous to share your love and knowledge of painting with us. I learned more in 5 days than I have in the last 5 years and I’m encouraged that I can improve with the tools and exercises you gave us. -PK

Legendary Carmel Artist Malcolm Moran Works on Display at Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Malcolm Moran moved to Carmel in 1963 and opened Gallery Carmel, which was a stage for his cast of thousands.

Carmel-By-Sea, CA, July 09, 2014 – Malcolm Moran moved to Carmel in 1963 and opened Gallery Carmel, which was a stage for his cast of thousands. He was also a partner in the Hog’s Breath restaurant and had his home and gallery memorialized in the movie “Play Misty for Me”.

He became the leader of the contemporary bronze sculpture movement. He is the innovator of dozens of techniques still used by many artists today. He began his education in architecture and industrial design at the University of Washington and went on to study a variety of mediums at Cornish Art School in Seattle, Art Center School in Los Angeles, the Kobe Union in Japan and Cranbrook Academy in Michigan.

His technical skills were honed from working on advanced styling concepts for the Big Three in Detroit – Chrysler, General Motors and Ford – and went onto interior design for the first Boeing 707. Later he was named to the prestigious post as Art Director of the Seattle World Fair.

In the mid-fifties he met Donald Buby and in 1960 they teamed to open their first gallery in Bloomfield, Michigan. In 1963, Moran settled in Carmel, California, and with Buby they established their new gallery and studio. He would become an influential force in the contemporary bronze sculpture movement. Many of his innovative techniques still resonate today.

One of Malcolm’s greatest honors was being invited by President Ford and his wife, Betty to have a showing of his art at the White House. In addition to Malcolm’s art career, he was also a proud member of the military beginning with the Merchant Marines Academy in California and later serving in the Army as a First Lieutenant during WWII..

Two works displayed at Mountainsong Galleries:
• Malcolm Moran
• BRONZE FALCON
• $55,000.00
• 9”H X 31”W X 28”D

Malcolm started his career as a designer in advanced styling concepts for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and Boeing in the 1950’s and was appointed the art director of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair where the theme was “Space Age”.

This Modern Abstract Sculpture interpretation of a falcon originally made on a smaller scale. A curious Ornithologist heard of Malcolm having live birds in his studio, such as owls, pigeons and Pete the Crow. When he saw the small sculpture of the falcon he was extremely impressed on how accurate it was, it was the best interpretation he has ever seen, and suggested he do a larger one. This piece was fifteen years in the making.

This one of a kind sculpture, is mounted on extremely rare Big Sure jade. It is over 100 years old and has been tumbled and naturally polished by nature, under the ocean. Pieces such as this one are now extinct. This piece has been in the family collection

• Malcolm Moran
• Children at Play
• $50,000.00
• 19”H X 24”W X 12”D

This piece was commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Kaiser of their six children playing in the Cypress trees. The sculpture sits on two pieces of very rare Big Sur jade. The sculpture took one year to complete. Mrs. Kaiser wrote Malcolm personal letters describing each child’ personal interests. Copies of these letters are available with the purchase of the piece.

Mr. Kaiser loved this piece so much, he put in his will to have the sculpture displayed on his Crypt. The family granted his wishes, but after time so many people had touched, the family was worried it would get damaged, so they had it removed. Having trouble deciding which sibling should keep the piece they decided to sell it.

Mr. & Mrs. Kaiser were collectors of Malcolm Moran sculptures, Edgar kept a wharf scene along with other Moran sculptures on his private Yacht . This is truly a piece of history.

He has also been a Master Charter Member of the Society of American Impressionists and a member of Plein Air Painters of Northern California.

His work has been exhibited all over the world, including London, Johannesburg and Paris. His peripatetic nature has led to the creation of powerful art from many beautiful places, including his original South African home, New Zealand and Europe – notably Venice.

An excerpt from the OPA’s announcement about the award states, “Alan Wolton is indulging in an artistic freedom brought about by his years of development and the confidence of maturity. Following international recognition, his paintings now show a revised simplicity of statement. Technically, Mr. Wolton´s work is unquestionable. His list of credentials and exhibitions over the years is very impressive.”

In his own words Wolton claims, “Generally, I am not too affected by awards but this decision by the Oil Painters of America Masters, notably retiring OPA president Neil Patterson, along with Masters Zhiwei Tu, Charles Movalli and others, has truly touched my heart. The kindness and honor these wonderful folk showered upon me will remain a lifetime high!”

Regarding his work, the artist recently said, “I like my paintings to stop passers-by who had only by accident caught a glimpse of the picture. What they see should be breathtakingly different, delightfully fresh, something emotionally appetizing and a joy. A subconscious visual high spiked by a happy relationship of colors, tones, forms and cleanliness.”

The award comes on the heels of the publication of “The Art of Alan Wolton,” a 348-page hardbound book which is at once a memoir, a close look at how paintings are made, and a retrospective of a lifetime’s achievement, including more than 400 color images of artworks from every period of the artist’s life. The book is available from Amazon.com, and local residents can find it at the Sedona Public Library.

Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea has the exclusive on this historic collectors’ item at $40,000

James Dietz was commissioned by George Lucas to do a large scale painting of Star Wars for a book Lucas was putting together. Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, is committed to representing more OPA and AIS credentialed Master Artists than any gallery in the world.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, June 13, 2014 – Mountainsong Galleries on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is the place to find more of today’s OPA and AIS Master Artists than anywhere in the World. The gallery owners Jonathan and Lucinda Mountainsong have created a friendly, fun upbeat setting filled with contemporary Master Artists, whimsical and dramatic bronze sculptures, stunning glass art and custom wood furniture. Mountainsong represents some of the greatest artists of our time from coast-to-coast.

A historical painting stands or falls on how well it depicts the story it is attempting to illustrate, and how convincingly it combines the people, their actions, costumes, surroundings and atmosphere in an appropriate composition. A good historical painting uses all of these elements to tell the major story and perhaps a second subtext. Both are driven by how interesting the situation is that the artist is attempting to render. How the viewer reacts to a great painting transcends its immediate story and strikes a deeper chord, one that hopefully evolves and changes as the viewer contemplates the art over time.

It is this last and most worthy goal to which artists like James Dietz aspire. In his portrait of events in the 20th and 21st Centuries, he labors to achieve that rare combination of historical fact and the romance, adventure and color of fiction.

Born in San Francisco, Jim graduated from Art Center College of Design in 1969. He had a successful illustration career in Los Angeles and New York, with a steady flow of work ranging from automobile ads, movie posters, and romantic and historical/action book covers.

By 1978, Jim and his wife had moved to Seattle, where Jim’s work gradually shifted away from commercial illustration to primarily historical aviation, automotive and military art. Today his work is internationally known and collected, and his style, with its emphasis on depth of story, is recognized by collectors of historical art. His list of clients includes: Boeing, Bell Helicopter, Federal Express, Allison, Cessna, Flying Tigers, the Indianapolis 500, BMW, the National Guard and many U.S. Army associations: U.S. Army Rangers, 82nd Airborne, 3rd Division, 4th Division, 29th Division, First Division, 1st Cavalry, 11th Cavalry, 28th Division, 41st Division and 37th Division, Command General Staff College, Army War College, US Air Force Documentary Art Program, Wingnut Studios, Meadowbrook and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance .

Awards include:

• Best in Show, EAA Aviation Art Show, three successive years, 1989-91

Jim has been a member of the World War I Aviation Historical Hall of Fame, an Artist Fellow of the American Society of Aviation Artists and a board member of the Automotive Fine Artists of America. He had one-man shows at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1990, 1998 and 2003; San Diego Air & Space Museum in 1990; and the US Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 2003. His paintings are part of the permanent collections of many military museums around the country, including the Pentagon, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum, Special Forces Museum, 82nd Airborne Museum, and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

In 2001, Barnes & Noble Publishing released a book on Jim’s World War II art, entitled Portraits of Combat. In 2005, Jim fulfilled a childhood dream when he got the opportunity for a cameo role in Peter Jackson’s (Lord of the Rings) remake of King Kong. Jim plays the role of pilot of the Curtis Helldiver aircraft which fires at Kong while he is perched high above New York on the Empire State Building.

Jim and his wife, Patti, live in Seattle with their dog, Sarah, who shares the distinction with previous Dietz pets, of being a regular in Jim’s paintings. Their son, Ian, is currently an officer serving in the U.S. Army. Jim works in a warm, pleasantly cluttered studio that resembles a WWI aviation bar, surrounded by uniforms, props and models that have made their way into paintings over the years.
