Pam Saxelby Creates Resources to Make Difficult Conversations Fun for Children

Talking to children about childbirth is not always easy, but author Pam Saxelby knows that the conversation is important because kids are curious.

San Antonio, TX, USA, October 9, 2018 — Talking to children about childbirth is not always easy, but author Pam Saxelby knows that the conversation is important because kids are curious. She also insists it can be a fun! As an educator and author, Saxelby has over 25 years of experience teaching in Chicago where she has worked with students of different ages—from junior high to high school as well as preschoolers.

“I love working with the pre-school kids because they are so funny. After many years of working with children, I have good insight into the questions these children have,” Saxelby comments. “Kids at this age are trying to figure everything out.” Children are curious about where they come from, and this isn’t a bad thing, Saxelby insists.

Saxelby has faced this question both in the classroom and at home, where years ago, she was summoned by her youngest daughter (4 at the time) to “a meeting in the living room” to discuss Saxelby’s then pregnancy with her third child.

“I saw that having children talk about where babies come from is important. We need accurate narratives that are not just centered on the stork. Children need correct information, and this topic can be presented in a way that is both fun and funny. Childbirth does not have to be scary for kids.”

The author adds, “I’ve always tried to write about what is interesting for children, and what they may be trying to figure out,” which is what led her to write her third children’s book, The Great Grace Escape.

Inspired by Saxelby’s granddaughter Grace, The Great Grace Escape is a humorous tale, told from a baby’s perspective about “escaping” from her underwater home in her mother’s womb! The author intends for this book to be a resource for parents, teachers, and pediatricians.

“I hope this story will lead to natural conversations, recognizing that children of different ages need different answers to their questions,” adds Saxelby. “I would like this book to be an opportunity for kids to ask questions about the day they were born and all the joy that goes along with that.” The Great Grace Escape is illustrated by Saxelby’s daughter, Anne Saxelby.

Publisher Lisa M. Umina adds, “This book is a great addition to children’s literature. It presents a unique perspective, helping children to understand where they come from and how they got here. Both children and adults alike will enjoy reading this story.”

Linda A. Goodlin Delves into Immigrant Past, Conveys Important Message for Today

It was over a hundred years ago that her grandparents immigrated to the United States, but Linda A. Goodlin knew their story was a compelling one she had to share.

San Antonio, TX (USA), April 5, 2018 — It was over a hundred years ago that her grandparents immigrated to the United States, but Linda A. Goodlin knew their story was a compelling one she had to share. Intrigued by their journey and experiences, Goodlin began researching her hometown, Rocktown, Pennsylvania.

This research became the basis for her debut historical fiction, “From Across the Pond,” that chronicles the trials and tribulations of a young couple who have come to live in the United States from their homeland of Wales.

“My grandfather really did come from Wales,” Goodlin says, “He lived in the coal mining town where the story takes place, and he worked in the coal mines there. He died from black lung before they ever put him on any kind of government funding for coal miners with black lung.”

From her own upbringing and conversations with family members, Goodlin knew about the challenges new arrivals to this country faced.“There were a great, diverse group of immigrants. Unfortunately, the coal mines weren’t the greatest place to work. It was a hard job and many men died.”

Goodlin’s own career has presented challenges of a different nature. She had her first child at the age of fifteen, at a time when her high school would not allow pregnant women to attend school. However, she returned to complete her GED, and she is now an inspirational speaker for women, in addition to being an author.

She uses her story to convey a powerful message. Illustrating the barriers between immigrants who spoke different languages and came from different countries and cultures, Goodlin demonstrates how the challenges of the new continent would bring everyone together. She writes, “When a disaster signal goes out, everyone in the town comes running, each woman praying it isn’t her man down there… At times like this, they do not look at each other as Polish, Irish, English, or German. They are neighbors caring about each other. All prejudices are put aside for the time being.”

“My main goal was to talk about how rich our country became through these immigrants who came and worked,” Goodlin says, but the reality for many new arrivals was harsh. “They came to a land being promised so much more than they had in their home country, but they often didn’t receive what they were being promised.”

Oftentimes, a strong work ethic was the only thing that enabled immigrants to be successful. But they faced great challenges as well. “Goodlin recounts a detailed narrative of our country’s past, but the drama that the main characters are facing will resonate with today’s generation and generations to come,” says publisher Lisa Umina.

Goodlin spent a year researching and writing the book from 2007 to 2008, as a part of a two-year writing class offered by prominent Christian author, Jerry B. Jenkins. The class gave Goodlin the impetus to launch her writing career; after completing an assignment to write a query letter to several magazines, she was hired as a writer for Guide Magazine. “From Across the Pond” is her first novel, and she is currently working on her second book.

The book launch event will be held at Scottdale Public Library in Scottdale, Pennsylvania on April 26th, from 6-8pm.

“From Across the Pond” is now available at Halo Publishing International, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, and Books a Million in Paperback for $16.95 and as an e-Book for $7.98.

“Tending My Garden: A Celebration of Love, Life and Blessings” is the Perfect Blend of Poetry and Photography

Poetry speaks to the heart, rhyming words that cut right to what is most important in life and first time author Jacqueline Miller Brown has captured that spirit in her book “Tending My Garden.” Her faith and trust in God’s love is abundantly clear in each poem whether she speaks of family love or the trials of life.

Utica, MS (USA), June 25th, 2017 — Poetry speaks to the heart, rhyming words that cut right to what is most important in life and first time author Jacqueline Miller Brown has captured that spirit in her book “Tending My Garden.” Her faith and trust in God’s love is abundantly clear in each poem whether she speaks of family love or the trials of life. Readers will find solace and joy in this beautifully appointed book in which each chapter is punctuated with the exquisite garden photography of her husband of 46 years, John Brown.

“I have been writing poetry since elementary school,” said Jacqueline Miller Brown. “Poetry comes naturally to me and I find it is the easiest way for me to convey the many blessing that God has provided throughout my life. I started by writing poems as a way to celebrate family and friends during their special moments in life. Poetry became a vehicle to acknowledge special events and made for personalized treasures that people looked forward to receiving.”

Open “Tending My Garden” at random and you’ll find a loving tribute to life and love and God that is meant to encourage the reader. Brown’s hope is that through her poetry, people will appreciate the little things in life and see that there is beauty all around, even in the midst of a world troubled and divided.

“I hope readers will be inspired, motivated, consoled and encouraged by my poems,” said Brown. “I believe that if we take the time to notice God’s gifts around us and see the beauty that God has blessed us with, that the world will be a much more loving place.”

“Tending My Garden” touches on the apparent and sometimes-hidden celebrations that we experience as a part of faith, family, relationships, coming of age, and the circle of life. Each chapter, eloquently illustrated with a single, photographed flower, helps us realize how fortunate we are and how our heavenly Father positively touches our lives every day.

John Brown, Jacqueline’s husband, is an avid photographer and finds great joy in capturing the beauty of a single bud. The photos throughout “Tending My Garden” have been taken by John and each image is so clear you can almost smell its beauty.

“I love flowers and for years my husband has enjoyed taking photos of our garden,” said Brown. “I saw this book as a wonderful opportunity to combine both our love of God and our individual gifts of poetry and photography. I am hoping “Tending My Garden” will be a global message that speaks to people from all walks of life and perhaps will even bring some people to want to learn more about the love of God.”

“Tending My Garden” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other outlets in paperback for $13.95.

New Children’s Book “I Am Me and You Are You” Shares a Wonderful Message of Acceptance

How often do we make snap judgments based on how another person looks? The style of their clothing, the color of their skin, the number of piercings or the way they wear their hair can put some people off.

Cleveland, OH (USA), June 10th, 2017 — How often do we make snap judgments based on how another person looks? The style of their clothing, the color of their skin, the number of piercings or the way they wear their hair can put some people off. After all, don’t we prefer to be friends with people who look like us? This is the thinking that leads to harmful words, bully behavior and racism and it is the primary message of first time author, Stacie Sullivan-Simon’s new children’s picture book “I Am Me and You Are You.” Inspired by her desire to create a story of tolerance and inclusion for her children Mason, 4 and Skylar, 12, Simon has written a simple, yet powerful message for young children and their parents.

“When you turn on the news today it seems like we have taken huge steps backward in terms of tolerance and racism,” said Stacie Sullivan-Simon. “I want my children to know that beneath our outward appearance, we are all people of value, individuals who deserve to be treated with kindness, acceptance, and equality.”

Illustrator Chad Thompson has brought the story to life with his colorful drawings that show a young boy and his friends coming to the realization that no matter what we look like on the outside, we are really all the same. The main character recognizes that no matter who we are, we start each day getting washed and dressed, eating a meal and heading to school where we hope we’ll enjoy learning and time with friends.

“I really enjoyed working with Chad, the artist,” said Stacie. “He understood the message behind my story and did such a great job of taking my words and breathing life into them with his wonderful drawings.”

Stacie encourages parents to use books like “I Am Me and You Are You” to help their children understand how hurtful it can be when we judge or bully. “If we focus on what is on the inside, we’ll make it a more peaceful world,” Stacie says.

Stacie recommends that we teach our children to “Stop, Think and Do the Switcheroo and put yourself in that person’s shoes.” This is a great way to remember that before we speak, we take a moment to imagine how our words and actions will be perceived by others and if they are harmful, to switch our thinking and be kind.

“We need this book,” said Lisa Umina, founder and publishing at Halo Publishing International. “This message is of universal importance and is told in such a loving and easy to understand way. I believe it will be the catalyst that parents need to have important conversations with their children about acceptance.”

Stacie is almost finished with her next book she has written with her four-year old son entitled “Oh no, Mason, That Can’t Be True,” a silly book that encourages creativity and imagination.

“I Am Me and You Are You” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other outlets in Hardcover for $19.95,in paperback for $13.95 and e-book for $6.95.

“Private Money Lending” An Important Guide to Investing in the 21st Century Low-Interest Rate Environment

Rarely is a book researched as thoroughly as Gustavo Gomez’s five-time award-winning book “Private Money Lending: Learn How to Consistently Generate a Passive Income Stream.”

Miami, FL (USA), June 7th, 2017 — Rarely is a book researched as thoroughly as Gustavo Gomez’s five-time award-winning book “Private Money Lending: Learn How to Consistently Generate a Passive Income Stream.” Gomez used this investing technique in his own life and was so pleased with the returns from this type of investment that he wanted to share his experience and knowledge with other investors interested in earning a significant and safe passive income stream. However, he wanted to craft a guide book that was authentic and accurate; therefore, he went back to college to earn a Ph.D. for the purpose of researching and writing this book.

“Writing the book has been a worthwhile and enriching experience,” said Gustavo Gomez. “I wanted to create a comprehensive and readable financial book that would provide the essential detailed information private mortgage investors would need to safely use this investment vehicle. Learning about this type of investment will help the retired, as well as the income investor, generate a consistent and generous return that could substantially enhance their retirement income.”

Gomez researched a variety of investment opportunities as well as closely studying the current and potential future financial climate. The reason for undertaking the study was twofold; for almost two decades, retirement portfolios have been devastated by economic boom and bust cycles, which is a key characteristic of today’s capitalist economies. It is quite possible that currently, another bust cycle could be unfolding despite the apparent bull market. Additionally, the adopted Federal Reserve policy of creating an artificially low-interest rate environment in an attempt to sustain the continued growth of the stock market and support of the current real estate recovery efforts has made it difficult for the income investor to safely generate a passive income stream to enjoy their retirement.

“People who are 60 or older don’t have enough time to wait for the return of their money should we experience another stock market crash,” said Gomez. “Therefore, I wanted to provide a step-by-step roadmap to help those who are retired or soon will be, to safely invest their disposable income in such a way as to provide consistent passive income for years to come.”

Gomez started lending money to private individuals and organizations more than 17 years ago and thus has become a private funding source for those who wouldn’t otherwise qualify for a conventional conforming loan. “I work primarily with those investing in commercial and investment properties,” said Gomez. This book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn how to invest in private mortgages in a sound and safe manner. However, it is important to note that although there are numerous investment strategies in the arsenal of every investor, adding private mortgages to the investment mix can reduce volatility by adding a non-correlated component to the investor’s overall investment portfolio.

“Private Money Lending: Learn How to Consistently Generate a Passive Income Stream” has won many book awards, which include the 2016 Axiom Business Book Awards®. So far, for 2017, the book has won the International Book Awards® (IBA), the Independent Press Awards® (IPA), the Next-Generation Indie Book Awards® (NGIBA), and the National Indie Excellence® Awards (NIEA).

“Gustavo’s book is amazing,” said Lisa Michelle Umina, founder, and award-winning author and publisher of Halo Publishing International. “It is so thoroughly researched and surprisingly easy to read for a book on finance. Anyone interested in learning about alternative, safe ways to invest their money should pick up this book and learn from the experience and knowledge of Gustavo.”

In fact, Gustavo’s book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn how to invest in private mortgages in a sound and secure manner. Moreover, this book is the only university research-based book in the market addressing this important investment topic. In fact, the seriousness of the undertaken research has been validated by the multiple awards the book has won to date.

“Private Money Lending: Learn How to Consistently Generate a Passive Income Stream” is now available at: Halo Publishing, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other outlets in Hardcover for $31.95 and in paperback for $24.95.

“We are exceedingly proud of the accomplishments of our authors over the past 15 years,” said Umina, founder and publisher at Halo Publishing International. “I started the business out of my basement as an author looking for a vehicle to help publish and distribute my own children’s book Milo Finds His Best Friend. Halo Publishing International publishes a variety of genres including children’s, self-help, spiritual, adult and young adult fiction and poetry. The team at Halo helps authors from manuscript to book in hand.

“We work closely with each author to help them build their individual author platform which goes beyond the layout and editing of the book,” explains Umina. “We also help with distribution in hardcover, paperback and e-book version, social media promotion, book launch and book signing events, creating book trailers and submitting their book for a variety of national, regional and genre awards.”

It is authors like Libbi, who have an amazing story to share, that bring such joy and meaning to all of us at Halo Publishing.”

The Halo motto is “If There’s a Book in Your Head…It’s Time to Get it in Your Hands” and Lisa and her team go above and beyond to help make that happen. Recently Lisa worked one-on-one with first time published author, Laura Brewster, a young adult with autism. Laura had written a book about her beloved dog Genevieve and Lisa helped her refine the story, work with an illustrator and publish the book.

“I am so very blessed to have the opportunity to work each day with a variety of amazing authors from around the world,” said Umina. “What sets Halo apart from other self-publishing houses is the fact that I am available to talk with the authors personally. I have years of experience as a publisher and can answer their questions and allay their fears, but I am also an award-winning author. I know what they are feeling. I have been in their shoes.”

What is next for Halo Publishing International? “We are continually working to build our team and marketing services so that we have the resources authors need to help them bring their book to the masses,” said Umina. “Some of our authors have been with us from the beginning and continue to write and publish more books and win awards and we want to help them celebrate and give them a platform so they can be heard.”

The e-book phenomenon is also a great vehicle for authors connecting with their readers. Electronic books can be downloaded in under a minute which helps facilitate the reader of today’s growing need to have what they want, when they want it; now.

A Community Comes Together in the Delightful Children’s Story “Have You Seen Henry?”

Author Michael Worley has been creating stories and drawing cartoons since he was a little boy.

Dallas, TX (USA), May 13th, 2017 — Author Michael Worley has been creating stories and drawing cartoons since he was a little boy. His imagination has spawned several other children’s stories including “Sonny the Scarecrow”, “The Quiet Giant”, “A Dog’s Tale”, “Everett the Piano” and “Lacey Shoestring’s Amazing Red Wagon Adventure.” In “Have You Seen Henry?” Worley was inspired by an actual possum encounter in his backyard.

“There was something so intriguing and fun about the possum that wandered into my backyard that I couldn’t resist featuring him in a children’s story,” said Worley. “I love animals and how they interact and as I was writing the story of Henry I began to imagine a community of animals within a neighborhood who are willing to work together for a common good.”

Each of the characters in “Have You Seen Henry?” are beautifully brought to life by illustrator Jorge Chiquillo. Worley uses repetition and clever alliteration with each character’s name like Frieda Fox, Amy Armadillo, and Roger Rooster which help children remember a growing number of adorable animals who come to the aide of Henry’s wife, Henrietta. As the story progresses and tensions mount, Worley shows how friends can encourage and support each other even in difficult times.

“I hope children will learn a lesson in the value of friendship,” said Worley. “In my life I have seen first hand the benefits of willing to help others in their time of need. I believe it is an especially important lesson for children to learn from a young age. Rather than finding fault, we should look for ways to come together with kindness, generosity and friendship.”

“Michael has written such a fun story that children will want to read it over and over,” said Lisa Umina, founder and president of Halo Publishing International. “Each page of the story introduces a new character, building a growing community of friends who are on a hunt for the missing Henry. Children and parents will laugh out loud at the conclusion when they discover Henry in the last place imaginable.”

Worley is hard at work creating a new story about an unlikely alien named George the Goon that he hopes will be brought to life in a feature length animated movie. In the meantime, look for upcoming sequels to “Lacey Shoestring’s Amazing Red Wagon Adventure” and the further adventures of Rex the Dog and Rudy the Rabbit from “A Dog’s Tale.”

“Have You Seen Henry?” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon and Barnes and Noble, in hard cover for $17.95.

Christian Novel “The Yoke” Explores Deception, Faith, and Love

Barnabas Mitchell wasn’t always a Christian. In fact, he had a lot of doubts about his faith. As an attorney, faith in the facts and how to present them for the benefit of his clients took precedence in his life.

Carbondale, IL (USA), December 18th, 2016 — Barnabas Mitchell wasn’t always a Christian. In fact, he had a lot of doubts about his faith. As an attorney, faith in the facts and how to present them for the benefit of his clients took precedence in his life. However, all of that came into question when he met Stephanie Schultz.

“Writing this story has been a many year endeavor,” said author Darrell Dunham. “In fact, the original version that I wrote five years ago bears little resemblance to the finished product. As I spent time with the characters and chronicled Barnabas’ journey to turn his life over to God, the story took on a life of its own. Originally the book was based on some of my own experiences questioning my faith and making the decision to put my life in God’s hands. I wanted to create a story that others who are questioning their faith could relate to. In fact, many of the arguments for resisting God that Barnabas shares were direct quotes from my own discussions with others of faith.”

In “The Yoke” readers will be captivated by the story of Barnabas and his nemesis Bill Cushman, who appears to have everything going for him, but who is truly an evil entity with an agenda that will challenge and frustrate our main character. However, at the core, “The Yoke” is the love story of Barnabas and Stephanie and Barnabas and God.

The word “yoke” was originally associated with oxen or work animals and represented a connection between the animal and the farmer. In this book by Dunham, the yoke refers to a number of the relationships Barnabas has in his life; with Bill Cushman, with Stephanie and ultimately with God.

“I reference my favorite scripture as part of the epilogue,” said Dunham.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

“This is one unexpected ride,” said Lisa Umina, founder and publisher of Halo Publishing International. “If you were expecting a milquetoast story because of the fact that it is a Christmas novel, you are in for a surprise. Highly entertaining and so well written, I encourage those who are people of faith or who are questioning their faith and looking for a good story to pick up “The Yoke”.”

“The Yoke” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon. It is available in paperback for $15.95.

“Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees” Encourages Readers to be Curious and Courageous

“Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees” encourages children to be curious about the different ways money can be made and grown.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (USA), December 13th, 2016 — Before we can save money, we must first make money. “Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees” encourages children to be curious about the different ways money can be made and grown. The main character, Anthony, is interested in understanding where money is made and with the help of his teacher, uncovers a variety of ways money is made and used.

“How often have we said the phrase ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’ never fully appreciating how that might be viewed by impressionable, imaginative children?” asks author Tony Bland. “I wanted to create a book that would help young readers become curious about the opportunities for future income and be inspired to learn more.”

“Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees” is a book about the adventures of a little boy and his desire to learn about the world of finance. It is a story of family values, teacher involvement, and the impact of words on the mind of an impressionable child.

The colorful illustrations, provided by Chad Thompson, help bring to life the ways in which money is garnered and used in our everyday life. Anthony, the main character in the story, understands that money doesn’t grow on trees but is curious as to how money does grow. Together, he and his teacher consider all of the ways in which money is accumulated and used in our life.

“To take care of yourself financially, you have to monetize your intelligence and ideas,” said Bland. “This book is the first in a series that will explore the different ways people can make money. If they are curious, work hard and take advantage of the opportunities that are available, the possibilities for making money are endless.”

“This delightful tale will inspire parents to have important conversations about money with their children,” said Lisa Umina, founder and president of Halo Publishing. “It is a wonderful gift for parents and grandparents hoping to instill a respect for money in their children.”

“Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees” is now available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon, in hard cover for $18.95.

The Christmas Mouse Inspires Families to Create New Holiday Traditions

The latest in holiday children’s literature, The Christmas Mouse, is soon to become a classic that families will read every December.

Oshkosh, WI (USA), October 01st, 2016 — The latest in holiday children’s literature, The Christmas Mouse, is soon to become a classic that families will read every December. Set at the time of Jesus’ birth, we find a tiny mouse and his fellow barn animal friends anticipating the holy birth; but not everyone is excited.

“I wanted to create a story that would put focus back on the true meaning of Christmas,” said Mark Spencer. “There was something innocent and endearing about a tiny mouse being the voice of faith and grace during a time when we can so often be caught up in the material trappings of the holiday.”

The Christmas Mouse is written entirely in rhyme and the illustrations, created by artist Polona Lovsin, beautifully bring to life a camel, goat, donkey, sheep and mouse. Children will be drawn to their sweet faces and the wonderful story as it moves from fear and doubt to faith and generosity.

“I’m an engineer,” said Spencer. “Writing children’s fiction was never even a consideration. However, one day while visiting friends, I noticed a tiny doll house door along their baseboard.”

That little door created a spark of inspiration and over time the story began to take shape in his mind until one final night when it just seemed to flow from his fingertips.

Readers of The Christmas Mouse will be glad that Spencer tapped into that inner child and created this wonderful holiday tale which includes an idea for creating an annual family tradition. The little mouse door plays an important role in the story. It is through the door that the grace of God enters; a door into our hearts. Spencer suggests families might create a simple door, with paper and crayon, to symbolize the spirit of Christmas entering each home. It is a wonderful way to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive.

“This is such a sweet story,” said Lisa Umina, founder and publisher of Halo Publishing International. “And I have it on good authority that these adorable creatures will be appearing in a sequel before too long.”

Early readers of The Christmas Mouse are already sharing their positive comments:
“What a great message of giving and generosity. It is a message that will teach kids a lot of important lessons. Most of all, it will teach kids the true meaning of Christmas so that they could get ready not by expecting gifts but by sharing as much as they can with others, especially those who are less fortunate,” Irene Roth.
