Parcel2Go Backs Ebay’s Call For Government To Bring Forward Fast Internet Roll-Out

A call by auction and retail website eBay for the government to increase mobile internet speeds and support Britain’s online marketplace has been echoed by the UK’s largest online parcel delivery service, Parcel2Go.

The e-commerce giant stepped up pressure on the government this month to act and bring Britain in line with other countries in terms of mobile internet speeds. Through its Mobile Manifesto, which eBay passed to ministers at the start of November, the firm has voiced its concern that the UK could get left behind when it comes to mobile infrastructure.

Speaking to the BBC this week, eBay UK’s retail director Angus McCarey said while Britain is currently leading the way in Europe when it comes to smartphone ownership, it is falling behind in terms of next generation technology.

Parcel2Go has also stressed the importance for individuals and British businesses of installing an effective 4G mobile network as soon as possible. Tests are already underway in Cornwall and London, but it looks like the service won’t be widely available until at least 2013.

Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go, said: “The UK has been a leader so far in the world of online shopping and as a country we cannot risk losing momentum by taking a back seat when it comes to adopting 4G technology. The economy is in a fragile state and investment in faster mobile internet is exactly the type of strategy that will help to give the retail sector a shot in the arm.

“At Parcel2Go we unveiled our mobile website earlier this year to make it easier for customers to access domestic and international shipping services on the move. Businesses have their part to play in making their content and transactional pages accessible through mobile sites and apps, but the government needs to encourage investment by doing everything possible to bring forward 4G.”

New Report Shows Cambridge As The UK’s Leading Hi-Tech Cluster, Bucking The National Trend

Cambridge is home to one of the highest concentrations of technology companies in the world. Famous for the recent £6.5Bn sale of Autonomy to HP, Cambridge is continuing to cement its place as the UK’s Leading Hi-Tech Cluster as a new report from Startup Intelligence (Cambridge: from the lab to the limelight) shows.

The report, launched today at “Silicon Valley Comes to Cambridge”, shows growth in employment in many new hi-tech sectors such as opto-electronics and environmental technologies, strong rises in house prices throughout 2010, unemployment at 2.1% (way below the national average of 7.9%) and employment in the R&D sector at 18 times the national average.

For the first time Cambridge is beginning to grow companies large enough to sway global markets. The typical Cambridge technology company is still quite small, with an average of 29 employees. But the companies known as the ‘Big 4’ – ARM, Autonomy, CSR and Domino, together with antibodies company Abcam, employ almost 2,500 people in the region, twice as many as they did in 2004.

The report points to why Cambridge is bucking the trend. Cambridge benefits from a unique mix of characteristics that make it one of the world’s most advanced technology clusters: the world’s top University creating a pool of superb academic talent, from around the world, with 7,000 graduate students at any one time, a compact network of institutions and associations that foster innovation and support entrepreneurship and some of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs turned angel investors who are keen to fuel the new generation of ‘Made in Cambridge’ successes, all within a 20-mile radius.

Cambridge is also diverse: it has “a unique technology entrepreneurial ecosystem”. Local companies include leaders in biotechnology, medical technology, gaming, audio, semiconductors, materials and printing. New startups are blurring the boundaries between sectors such as engineering and biotechnology and are becoming more ambitious to solve mass-market problems.

Technology firms play a larger role in the economy of Cambridge than of any other UK city. The greater region hosts 27,500 businesses, employing more than 700,000 people. Their contribution to the local economy is estimated to be worth over £12 billion. There are now 1,500 technology firms in the city alone, employing around 40,000 people – even though between 1988 to 2008, 42% of all high-growth companies in the cluster were acquired.

The report shows how Cambridge is a hidden engine powering the UK economy. But with so many high-technology firms concentrated in such a small area, why can’t most people name even a handful of successful Cambridge companies? The main reason is that these companies tend to sell to other businesses. They develop state-of-the-art technologies and components that fit into other technology companies’ supply chains, so visibility is low while impact and value are high. Cambridge is bucking the trend and the economic downturn; it’s time to put it in the limelight.

In addition, the virtual paint finishes react to movements of the iPad, so the user has the actual impression of moving a real-life paint sample in relation to a light source. The interactive capability of this app means that almost every product image can be interacted with, creating a virtual environment that allows users to experience the look and feel of the various equipment details for themselves.

Another outstanding feature is the way the app combines the product information and vehicle configuration processes.

The conventional approach involves the user finding information about products and features such as paint finishes, equipment etc. in a physical catalogue, or on the web. They then begin a separate step of vehicle configuration in a Configurator, beginning with a default vehicle. The BMW Individual app goes one step further by combining these previously separate steps. While reading the various chapters, users are already able to bookmark paintwork finishes, leather colours or other features they like. They can effectively configure their vehicle while gathering information, performing both activities within a single process. As a result, the vehicle initially shown in the Configurator already reflects the user’s individual preferences.

Users can of course save “their” dream car, share it with friends and acquaintances on Facebook, file it in their personal photo album, or send it off in an e-mail.

Crew Systems Adopts Guardtime Keyless Signatures to Add Tamper Evidence to Daily Reports and Accident Videos for Monitored Vehicles

Crew Systems Inc, have established a strategic alliance by which Crew will adopt the GuardTime Keyless Signature Service to add tamper evidence to its daily and monthly reports and recorded video files.

Tokyo, Japan, Wednesday – November 16, 2011 — CREW SYSTEMS INC. (“Crew”), a video telematics cloud service provider, and GuardTime Japan,Inc., have established a strategic alliance by which Crew will adopt the GuardTime Keyless Signature Service to add tamper evidence to its daily and monthly reports and recorded video files as they are stored in the telematics cloud known as “HARVEST”. The HARVEST service is scheduled to be released on December 1, 2011.

HARVEST is an integrated safety driving support system which consists of a drive recorder, digital tachometer, and a real-time dynamic object management system. In HARVEST, the communication system uses built-in drive recorders mounted on vehicles to capture the behaviors of drivers, to record video images of traffic accidents as they occur, and to collect real-time information from the global positioning system (GPS). As the data is gathered, it is automatically sent to the HARVEST server in the Cloud. The server then processes, analyzes, and safely stores the data where it can automatically produce regular reports. The analysis and assessment of the data generate “safe driving” rankings. The system can also produce forensically-sound recorded video images capturing any traffic accidents that have occurred, or even recorded acts of unsafe driving.

By signing all of the digital data collected with GuardTime’s Keyless Signatures, Crew can provide proof that the data has not been tampered with in any way since it was signed, regardless of how it is transmitted to and stored in the Cloud. When submitting reports and associated video images for investigational purposes, Crew will significantly increase the reliability and credibility of the evidence with the addition of the unique GuardTime data integrity service.

Companies that own five or more vehicles for business use are required by safety driving management laws to produce daily reports on the driving habits of their employees. Systems that provide the automatic digitization of daily driving reports are increasingly used for operating efficiency. However, the integrity of the digitized and stored data has been left as a pending issue. In particular, video images capturing traffic accidents are increasing lybeing used as evidence in legal cases and for insurance claims. The admissibility of such data as evidence requires proof that the data is tamper-free.

Axceleon has released CloudFuzion for Azure and is showing existing Media & Entertainment customers and prospects how easy it is to integrate existing studio workflows into a cloud based render farm on Microsoft Azure with no impact on the artist.

CloudFuzion is integrated with applications such as Autodesk Maya, 3dsMax, Softimage, Adobe After Effects and allows launching of image renders from the application directly to an Azure render farm anywhere in the world.
