New Book Teaches Some Good Old Fashioned Manners

Author Maryann B. Sawka says her new book about manners not only teach the rules for good behavior in a social setting, but also helps readers gain confidence and poise.

Houston, TX (USA), Wednesday – November 30th, 2011 — Author Maryann B. Sawka says her new book about manners not only teach the rules for good behavior in a social setting, but also helps readers gain confidence and poise.

“Good Table Manners Made Easy teaches people of any age how to feel comfortable in a variety of social dining situations,” Sawka says.

An educator and mother of two girls, the author said she sees in our society a general “disregard for basic social kindness.” She embraces the notion that good manners are stylish and timely in every situation and founded Charming Manners, a training company that educates all ages seeking self confidence.”If you have confidence, you can handle many things.”

She developed Good Table Manners Made Easy because she wanted to offer a simple guide her students could refer to after completing class. The new book, published through Halo Publishing International, offers quick tips for all ages. It not only teaches the proper rules for civility, but offers an explanation as to why it is important for us to follow them.

“Maryann’s new book introduces good manners with a fun, engaging approach that makes the quest for knowledge an enjoyable experience,” said Halo International Publisher Lisa Umina ( http://www.halopublishing.com ).

“This easy-to-read book filled with helpful tips is an excellent resource for both children and adults who will benefit from the lessons for the rest of their lives,” Umina said.

Sawka, a native of Brownsville, Pa., a small town south of Pittsburgh, earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and elementary education from the California University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in reading and literacy from Walden University. She and her husband, Eli, will soon celebrate their 10th anniversary and have two children, Megan, 8, and Sarah, 4.

Sawka is promoting her new book through schools, libraries and other public venues and hopes to get Good Table Manners Made Easy into the hands of as many readers as possible.

“I think having good manners helps to build strong character, something we desperately need to see more in our society,” says the author.

Detroit Guitar Master Reveals Secrets that Allow Players to Learn Guitar Fast

Brand new release of StringSlinger™ Secrets DVD Program makes learning the guitar easier and faster

MT. Clemens, MI, November 29, 2011 – RockStar Academy announced today the release of its “Learn to Burn Fast” StringSlinger Secrets DVD Video Series, a program designed to speed up the pace at which aspiring guitarists master the guitar.

Dem Miller, also known as Detroit Dem, has played in bands that have opened for the likes of Seether, Saliva, Red, Tantric, Tesla, Vince Neal, Tap Root, Bad Company, Great White, Dokken, and others.  He has taught hundreds of students over the past 10 years, and he has now decided to apply his guitar knowledge for the benefit of would-be players.  “There’s an easier way to learn guitar fast,” says Dem. “Conventional texts would have students repeat the same musical scales over and over, leading to frustration and boredom. I have created StringSlinger to accelerate the process and restore the fun that comes with playing. It really teaches one how to learn guitar quickly.”

The “StringSlinger Secrets” System allows players to learn and dominate the fretboard, and it includes Dexterity Exercises, Fretboard Domination, Working with Rhythm, Moveable Shapes, Explaining Modes, and more.  Players can memorize and play the pentatonic positions, as well as modal positions, in any mode and any key, and move fluently up and down the neck of the guitar.  By following this structured, logical approach, Detroit Dem estimates the time to guitar mastery to be 3 to 5 times faster than with conventional methods.

This course also contains DVDs on Chords/Tunings, Riffs/Rhythms, and a free bonus program entitled “Song Series #1,” which covers 10 great songs spanning 5 decades.  This program is not for absolute beginners, but works well for those guitar players who know some chords and scales. Mr. Miller has provided a pathway that cuts out unnecessary waste when learning to play – a program that serves as a great starting point in quickly mastering the guitar. Learning that might cost $2,000 in private lessons can be purchased for about $100.

One of Dem’s former students, Bobby, says: “Dem’s method helped me understand everything about the guitar and how to dominate the fretboard.” Bobby does practice a lot, but he shows what is possible by using the “LearntoBurnFast” StringSlinger Secrets System. A sampling of his playing can be seen on the testimonial page of the website: www.learntoburnfast.com.

Brandon Wilson’s Award-Winning “Along the Templar Trail” Published in German Edition

Brandon Wilson’s inspiring book, “Along the Templar Trail,” has been published in a new German edition, “Auf dem Templerweg: Sieben Millionen Schritte für den Frieden.” The English edition won the 2009 Lowell Thomas Gold Award for BEST TRAVEL BOOK.

Paia, HI, November 29, 2011 – In this time of political grandstanding, it is refreshing to hear about someone who quite literally, “walks the talk.” Recently, author/photographer Brandon Wilson and his 68-year-old French friend completed an eleven-country walk for peace from France to Jerusalem. In doing so, they founded the “Templar Trail.”

Wilson’s inspiring book about their odyssey, “Along the Templar Trail: Seven Million Steps for Peace” (2008) has been translated by Imke Healy and published by Pilgrim’s Tales in a new German edition, “Auf dem Templerweg: Sieben Millionen Schritte für den Frieden” (November 2011). The English edition won the 2009 Lowell Thomas Gold Award for BEST TRAVEL BOOK from the prestigious Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (SATWF).

This true chronicle interweaves adventure, intrigue, wit and social commentary into an entertaining Chaucerian tale about overcoming odds and discovering the secret to creating peace. The courageous journey from France to Jerusalem traced one marched a millennium ago by those who became the first Knights Templar. Like those men, the modern pilgrims’ walk was filled with extreme highs and lows. The men trekked 2620-miles (the equivalent to crossing the U.S.) across difficult terrains in extreme climates, from the freezing Black Forest to Turkey’s broiling plains. There was the mental test of hiking 30-50 km., a virtual marathon, each day. However, the pair frequently met “angels” whose random acts of kindness bolstered their resolve. But when war erupted between Israel and Lebanon, violence mounted in Damascus, and Hemorrhagic Fever raged in Turkey, everything became uncertain – except for their steadfast and perhaps life-threatening resolve.

Their trek attracted the attention of national television networks and major newspapers along the route, allowing them to spread an impassioned message of peace to millions of Christians, Muslims and Jews alike throughout eleven countries. Without exception, those ordinary people echoed their call to focus on our commonality instead of our differences – and the urgency of resolving our problems before it’s too late.

Asked why he set-off on this quest, Wilson explained, “I’m convinced that one person can still make a difference in today’s world – and the time is now. It’s time for truth and tolerance, instead of blindly following a road of mutual destruction. I’m re-establishing this Templar Trail as an international path of peace for people of all cultures, faiths and nationalities. Let’s set aside our differences; let’s walk as one.”

This tale of empowerment stands as a strong testimony to the courage of the human spirit. Arun Gandhi, president of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, calls it, “A fascinating testimony of faith and gumption…A must read.”

About the Author

Brandon Wilson is no novice to these types of historic journeys. This world adventurer and perpetual pilgrim has walked five of the world’s most important pilgrimage trails: the Camino de Santiago and Via de la Plata across Spain, the St. Olav’s Way across Norway, and he was the first American to walk the 1150-mile Via Francigena from England to Rome. His fascination began when he and his wife Cheryl became the first western couple to walk a traditional Buddhist pilgrim trail from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1991. Still going strong, he and his wife recently were among the first to hike the challenging Via Alpina the length of the Alps for 1200 miles from Trieste to Monte Carlo.

Brandon Wilson is also the award-winning author of Yak Butter Blues: A Tibetan Trek of Faith (2004), Dead Men Don’t Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa (2005), and Over the Top & Back Again: Hiking X the Alps (2010), recipient of the 2010 Book of the Year Bronze Award from ForeWord Reviews. His story “Life When Hell Freezes Over” appeared in They Lived to Tell the Tale: True Stories from the Legendary Explorers Club (The Lyons Press/Globe Pequot, 2007). His photos have won awards from National Geographic Traveler and Islands magazines. He is a member of the prestigious Explorers Club.

Reviews

“A vivid and eye-opening blend of history, adventure, religion, mysticism and modern conflict… We cannot resist being swept along with the fervor of this quest. It is simply one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time, and one that proves that with the right combination of character and determination great things can be done, and the eyes of the world can be opened.” ~ Richard Bangs, adventurer/author/host of the PBS series Richard Bangs’ Adventures With Purpose

“More than the mere adventure of two brave men, it is a grand and noble quest for peace, as well as a spiritual voyage that will leave readers emotionally and intellectually replenished…I immensely enjoyed reading this book. His writing combines a marvelous sense of Zen with good humor, and his personal style makes you feel as if you were there taking part in it all…” ~
Midwest Book Review

“If we want peace on earth, we must make the effort to embody peace with each step. Brandon Wilson’s inspiring journey, told beautifully in this book, is a living example of peacemaking.” ~ Cindy Sheehan, noted peace activist

“A rhapsody on the theme of pilgrimage. May Brandon Wilson’s goal of fostering peace along the glory roads of the world inspire a trail of pilgrims to create their own sacred journeys in the interest of world peace.” ~ Phil Cousineau, author of The Art of Pilgrimage and The Book of Roads

“Rich with descriptive detail, replete with humor and never lacking in the life-altering experiences of his previous journeys, Along The Templar Trail is arguably Wilson’s most personal, passionate book yet – a resolute plea for compassion in an often intolerant world…” ~ C.W. Gortner, author of The Last Queen

The Danish Rock Band Dead Smiling Pirates Release a New Single from the Upcoming Album

Dead Smiling Pirates Release the New Single “By The End Of” on December 2th.

Copenhagen, Denmark, November 26, 2011 – Dead Smiling Pirates used in autumn 2011 focus groups from SoundOut to determine the quality of the tracks for their upcoming album “Harvest On A Hype.” Focus groups identified three potential singles. The band has chosen to release one of them as the first single. “By The End Of” is going to be released on December 2th.

Dead Smiling Pirates hails from Copenhagen, Denmark. The three pirates set sail on the musical oceans for a life of music piracy in 2006 and released a debut album in 2007. This power packed trio plays catchy alternative rock filled with an eclectic mix of influences highlighted by lots of tight breaks, trashy guitar riffs, and punk influenced vocals. They back up their sound with attitude focusing on the irony of life, and lyrics about egoism, ethics, and beyond.

The leadsinger Kim Burmeister says “Dead Smiling Pirates plays alternative rock and sounds like something between Paramore, Blink-182, Linkin Park and Metallica”.

Their motto “Release Your Inner Pirate” gives a hint of their ironic and challenging mindset. This take on life is bound to appeal to young and old alike, with the prerequisite being your own punkrock like attitude and undying nonconformist view of life itself with dead aim at the modern day corporate establishment. If you feel this way join the club and give this indie band a good listen. You are invited to take a voyage on their private ship of musical delights.

Sojourn Music Release Holiday Inspired Songs “A Child Is Born” Set for Release on Nov 22, 2011

Christmas at Sojourn has always been a unique thing. From the first year in the life of the church, Sojourn have been fascinated by the more gritty side of the Christmas story.

Hollywood, CA, November 23, 2011 – Christmas at Sojourn has always been a unique thing. From the first year in the life of the church, Sojourn have been fascinated by the more gritty side of the Christmas story. The church fathers chose the darkest time of the year to celebrate the dawning of the Light of Lights in the birth of Christ, the entrance of hope into darkness.

The Christmas story itself is one of contrasts – God as a baby. A king in a manger. His birth was welcomed not by crowds and royalty, but by outcasts and foreigners. Because the Christmas story is ultimately a story of hope for the hopeless, healing for the broken, and light in the darkness.

Sojourn Church has sought for many years to capture that emotion in their Christmas music. There’s a place for joy, a necessary and central place for celebration, but that joy and celebration has its most weight when seen in the context of the suffering and longing from which it emerges. So Christmas music at Sojourn has always had a dark edge, a sense of tension and angst, which points us to the darkness of our own hearts that longs for the light of Christ.

This new CD recording, titled “A Child Is Born,” is birthed almost directly out of Sojourn Church’s Christmas worship services. The members of Sojourn recorded this new list of tracks at home, so to speak, at the 930 Arts Center (our Midtown campus) and at Eddy Morris’s, Sojourn’s Production Director and at Ear Candy studios, where Sojourn also recorded the albums, “Before the Throne” and “These Things I Remember.” Sojourn’s own pastor, Mike Cosper, states, “It’s an indie rock record, recorded the indie rock way, piecing together what we could to give fans and music lovers this homemade gift. It’s not perfect, but most home-made things aren’t.”

Sojourn Church also reached out to some friends and borrowed their songs for the making of “A Child Is Born,” including Bifrost Arts’ “Joy Joy,” a song based on a very old melody that perfectly captures that tense, advent joy. They also recorded Bill Mallonee’s “Knocking at Your Door”, a song we sing every Advent season whose gritty and earthy words bring the season home. In addition is Sandra McCracken’s “This is the Christ” a text McCracken reworked from Martin Luther, and was an instant favorite for Sojourn during last year’s holiday sermons.

In addition, Sojourn Church has a number of originals and traditional songs, including a punk-rock inspired “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” the grittiest version of “Go Tell it On the Mountain,” anyone will ever hear and ambient pop versions of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” and “Silent Night,” a John Newton text reworked by Brooks Ritter (“Oh Glorious Hour”) and an ancient anonymous text reworked by Jamie Barnes (“A Voice is Sounding”).

A Child Is Born” is now available on Sojourn Music’s Bandcamp page and also available on Itunes and CD Baby.

Sojourn Music is also offering a 3 song sampler of the new release, “A Child Is Born,” to anyone who registers their email address: http://noisetrade.com/sojourn

U.S. Spanish Children’s Book Sales Climb

Amazon Spain launch and U.S. book sales indicate next big market. November is National Picture Book Month.

Midvale, UT, November 22, 2011 – Publishing is evolving and crossing borders like never before, as is children’s literature. Amazon.com’s recent entry into Spain and the explosion of Spanish-language ebook platforms are indicators of the next big publishing market.

Sales of Spanish language books in the United States demonstrate significant demand–including for children’s literature in Spanish. Bilingual author Karl Beckstrand has seen an increase in demand for his Spanish-language and bilingual picture books and e-books.

This year Beckstrand has had three titles on Amazon’s “Hot New Releases” in Spanish list. His Spanish titles outsell the English versions, though most of his titles come with an English/Spanish pronunciation guide. Positive national reviews by the Horn Book blog and ForeWord Reviews don’t hurt either.

During November, National Picture Book Month, Beckstrand expects record sales–not because of the added emphasis–but because, lately, every month is a record sales month. Customers are not all likely to be to Spanish-speakers. It may be that individuals, schools and families agree with Amazon: an additional language is a good idea.

Considering that native Spanish speakers are more common than native English speakers worldwide (the only other native language more common than Spanish is Mandarin, according to Time and Wikipedia), Amazon’s lead should be followed. Beckstrand’s picture books may be a good start.

Premio Publishing has been delighting readers since 2004. Nationally lauded (ForeWord Reviews, Horn Book blog, Midwest Review), our activity picture books–including a cookbook for kids, Spanish/bilingual books with pronunciation guide and English, Spanish or bilingual text, and ebook mysteries–feature minority characters, capture attention and create repeat readers. Distribution via: Ingram, Brodart, Baker & Taylor, Follett/BWI, Amazon, Nook/Kindle/ibooks/Kobo, Premiobooks.com
