Ecotech Institute’s Clean Jobs Index Shows the U.S. Had Nearly 750,000 Clean Job Openings in First Quarter of 2013

National Findings include Growth in the Solar Industry, along with an Increase in Alternative Fueling Stations and LEED Certifications.

Denver, Colorado, May 10, 2013 – Ecotech Institute today released new data from its Clean Jobs Index, which aggregates all the available clean jobs in the U.S. The Index found that there were 749,197 clean jobs posted across the United States between January 1, 2013 and March 31, 2013. The Index breaks down clean jobs by state with links to local listings, helping to fill the data gap left by the U.S. government when it recently stopped tracking green jobs due to budget cuts.

Ecotech Institute, the first and only college focused entirely on training students for solar, wind and renewable energy jobs, launched the Clean Jobs Index in January 2013, although it can pull data for all of 2012. In addition to providing objective information on jobs, the Clean Jobs Index also aggregates data on a variety of sustainability factors in all 50 states, including alternative fueling stations, LEED projects, total energy consumption, energy efficiency, green pricing, net metering and state incentives.

One area that is illustrating tremendous growth is the solar industry. In Q1 2013, the Clean Jobs Index listed more than 8,000 solar jobs with titles such as solar sales representatives, installers, solar panel manufacturers and project managers.

Highlights from the Clean Jobs Index, Q1 2013:

Number of Clean Jobs Posted in the U.S. in Q1 2013: 749,197

States with the Biggest Gains in Clean Jobs Postings from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013: Alabama, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Vermont, West Virginia

Number of Available Alternative Fueling Stations Nationwide: 23,575, up seven percent from Q4 2012

States with the Most Alternative Fueling Stations: California, Florida, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Washington

National Number of Electric Car Chargers: 16,256, up by 1,274 from Q4 2012

States with the Most Incentives for Sustainability and Renewables: California, Oregon, Minnesota, Texas, Washington

States with the Most Growth in Available Incentives from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013: Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon

New Building Space LEED Certified Within Q1 2013: 110,000,000 square feet nationally, up five percent from the previous quarter

“The Clean Jobs Index shows that there is tremendous job growth in the cleantech sector and signs of positive momentum on the state level for environmental factors that can affect us all,” said Kyle Crider, Ecotech Institute’s Program Chair and Manager of Environmental Operations. “When we see increases in LEED certification, we know businesses are making sustainable decisions; when we see an increase in alternative fueling stations, we know people are driving demand for greener forms of transportation. These are powerful indicators.”

Ecotech Institute regularly gathers data for the Clean Jobs Index from a variety of independent research entities that develop and regularly publish cleantech information. Sources include a variety of government agencies, nonprofit organizations and businesses, including: U.S. Energy Information Administration, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Green Building Council, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency.

Ecotech Institute’s Power Utility Technician Program Addresses Growing Need for Talent in the Sector

More than 10,200 Power Utility Jobs were Available in the Last Year; Industry Insiders See Looming Talent Gap

Denver, Colorado, April 29, 2013 – The Power Utility industry is experiencing a massive demographic shift and employees who know both conventional grid and smart grid technology are in demand. With a growing number of retirees and new technologies cropping up, a new generation of power utility technicians is critical for the industry. Ecotech Institute, which focuses entirely on preparing students for jobs in sustainability, has been closely watching the rapidly changing sector and its Power Utility Technician program exists to fill the gap.

Ecotech Institute designed its Power Utility Technician program with input from subject matter experts who have more than 55 years of combined utility experience and know first-hand where the industry is headed. The two-year program prepares graduates for careers in power generation, with specialization in power plant operations and maintenance. Students receive immersive and hands-on training that focuses on electric utility distribution systems, grid and smart grid.

A few job titles that correlate with the Power Utility Technician program include Systems Operator, Power Plant Operator, Hydroelectric-Station Operator and Turbine Operator. According to Ecotech Institute’s Clean Jobs Index, there were 10,265 jobs advertised in the last year (March 2012 to March 2013) that match the skills taught in Ecotech’s Power Utility Technician program.

“The power utility workforce is facing changes as many utility workers are retiring and new talent is becoming vital,” says Alden Zeitz, Manager of Renewable Energy Services with Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative. “A new generation of power utility specialists that understands the grid but also grasps the concepts and application of new energy sources is critical.”

Upon successful completion of the Power Utility Technician program, graduates will be prepared to:

* Apply the fundamentals of power generation, so they can operate and maintain power plants;

* Use their knowledge of high voltage systems to maintain and operate grid infrastructure, smart grids, and distribution systems;

* Use the fundamentals of electrical theory and related knowledge to design, build, repair, calibrate and modify electrical components, circuitry, controls and machinery;

* Meet industry standards within the electrical engineering, power production and distribution fields.

In addition to the Power Utility program, Ecotech Institute offers the following:

* Solar Energy Technology, Associate of Applied Science

* Wind Energy Technology, Associate of Applied Science

* Renewable Energy Technology, Associate of Applied Science

* Energy Efficiency Program, Associate of Applied Science

* Electrical Energy Technology, Associate of Applied Science

Varsity Tutors Partners with Coinbase to Accept Bitcoin for Tutoring Services

New Currency Allows More Convenience, Fewer Fees for International Students & Their Families

St. Louis, MO, April 25, 2013 – Varsity Tutors, a premier private academic tutoring and test prep provider, today announced that it is now accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for its in-person and live-online tutoring services. While all clients will be able to pay using Bitcoin, the company anticipates that the greatest demand will be from students located abroad who purchase Skype-tutoring. Previously, international students seeking Varsity Tutors’ services, most often for language tutoring or SAT, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT test prep, could only process payment by credit card or bank transfer which assess foreign transaction fees. The addition of Bitcoin to its payment options will allow those who have adopted the digital currency to avoid traditional currency conversion costs.

“At Varsity Tutors, we’re constantly seeking out ways to better serve our clients, so if digital currency can make it easier for international students to access our tutoring services, it seems only natural to embrace it,” said Chuck Cohn, founder and CEO of Varsity Tutors. “Logistically, the process of integrating Bitcoin into our payment structure was very easy, and any simple change that can improve the client experience is a no-brainer.”

Varsity Tutors is accepting Bitcoin payment through Coinbase. A believer in the currency and technology, Cohn actually began investing in Bitcoin and the payment service last year. “As an entrepreneur, I’m a strong supporter of efficient and innovative technologies, so I’m very interested in the potential of digital currency not only in my business, but in the larger marketplace,” said Cohn.

Varsity Tutors provides in-home academic tutoring and test prep services in 19 major U.S. metro areas, as well as online via Skype. Students are expertly matched with a private tutor who delivers personalized, one-on-one instruction in any subject from STEM to the humanities, as well as preparation for standardized exams at all levels of education from K-12 to graduate school.

20 cm Long Worm In The Human Eye, First Ever Recorded On Video

Can you believe that a 20 cm worm can house itself in the human eye? But one has to believe one’s eyes.

Here is the video clip of a 20 cm long worm being removed from a human eye through surgical procedure. It is the first time ever that such a long worm growing in the eye has been recorded. The video has evoked great interest among medical students as well as the general public.

http://www.indiavideo.org/health/loa-loa-worm-removing-surgery-8857.php

Dr. Ashley Thomas Mulamoottil, the doctor who recorded this unique surgery says that this is the seventh worm that he has removed in the last one decade and it is also the longest.

The worm Loa Loa was originally found in Africa and has now reached Asia. The mangrove fly or deer fly is believed to be the carrier of this worm. The eggs of the worm enter the human body through small wounds inflicted by the fly. The death of the worm inside the body could be fatal as it could contaminate the blood. The disease is known as microfilariasis or Loa Loa infestation (Loiasis).

The video portal www.indiavideo.org and the Indian language portal www.oneindia.in are taking the video to the world. According to Mr. M.R. Hari, Executive Editor of India Video, the process recorded by Dr. Ashley fetched 2 million views on Facebook in three days and this persuaded them to make a short movie with supporting information to make it useful. Loa Loa disease could be a major health problem in future and hence an awareness campaign is the need of the hour. ‘We take up that mission now’ says

Mr. Sriram Hebbar, CEO of One India.

Renowned eLearning Expert Jay Cross to Headline April 30 Learning Techniques Webinar by Harbinger Knowledge Products and Raptivity Software

Harbinger Knowledge Products, a global leader in interactive eLearning, presentation and website software, announced today that renowned eLearning expert Jay Cross will headline the company’s free learning techniques webinar, “Making Learning Stick,” April 30 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.

Cross has been called the Guru of Informal Learning and is credited with originating the term eLearning. He is the CEO of the Internet Time Alliance, which helps corporations and governments use networks to accelerate performance. Cross has challenged conventional wisdom about how adults learn since designing the first business degree program offered by the University of Phoenix.

The 60-minute “Making Learning Stick” seminar is designed for anyone responsible for course development and instruction learn innovative techniques that will help students retain knowledge better and enhance their performance. Instructors and course designers in the educational arena, government sector and the corporate world are invited to attend.

According to Cross, as much as 85 percent of what a student learns in the traditional classroom environment is forgotten before it is ever put into practice. “The tragedy of the way many of us were taught for years in school is that you really can’t remember any of it – geometry, Latin, history – after you leave school,” he said.

Part of the problem, Cross said, is that the information was that curriculum was taught in age-old methods more appropriate for training soldiers than students and professionals. And knowledge was retained just long enough to pass a test, but not reinforced and used again in our everyday lives.

So how do you make sure students carry the knowledge home and continue to use it?

In the “Making Learning Stick” webinar, Cross will describe and demonstrate ways to increase knowledge retention and promote memory recall through a variety of innovative techniques and concepts, including informal and formal learning, experiential learning, interactive workscapes, reinforcement, push vs. pull learning, and memory experts’ tricks.

Cross will give an in-depth view of these effective learning techniques and share tips on how instructors can implement them easily into the learning environment.

There will also be a demonstration of Raptivity, the award-winning do-it-yourself eLearning interactivity builder, to show how course designers and instructors can use variety of interactions for memory recall and knowledge retention.

“Using interactive elements in course material has proven to be one of the best ways to truly engage students, keep their attention and help them retain information,” said Seema Chaudhary, president of Harbinger Knowledge Products.

“Raptivity software allows course developers to quickly and easily create engaging learning interactions, including games, simulations, brainteasers, interactive diagrams, virtual worlds and many more.”

During the webinar, there will be a “Best Tips for keeping memories alive” contest for attendees with a variety of prizes, including Jay Cross’ books and Raptivity software.

New Data Underscores Need for Ecotech Institute’s Business Administration – Sustainability Program

Ecotech’s Clean Jobs Index Indicates Nearly 60,000 Jobs in March that Require Both Business and Sustainability Knowledge

Denver, Colorado, April 18, 2013 – As more industries develop a commitment to green practices, the number of business-related jobs that require sustainability knowledge are on the rise. According to Ecotech Institute’s Clean Jobs Index, there were 59,803 U.S.-based jobs available in March that met the criteria of green jobs within a business environment. Ecotech Institute, a leader in renewable energy and sustainability education, continues to watch this growing trend and aims to fill the gap for qualified candidates with its two-year Business Administration – Sustainability degree program.

“Sustainability-focused careers span the globe and cross many boundaries from public and private sectors to nonprofits, consulting and more,” says Kyle Crider, director of sustainability for Ecotech Institute. “Organizations of all sizes that are looking to lessen their carbon footprint require someone who deeply understands the intersection between business and sustainability.”

Ecotech’s Business Administration – Sustainability program delivers a business education with a distinct focus on sustainability, which makes it easier for people to learn about, define and find sustainable business careers. Career opportunities include positions in management, sales, financial operations, production and many others. Additionally, the curriculum is ideal for people interested in entrepreneurship within the cleantech industry.

“The employee who has a holistic worldview will find more opportunities and have greater creativity, which can lead to an even greater profit potential,” adds Colin Coyne, Managing Principal, The Coyne Group and LEED 2.0 Accredited Professional. “Sustainable thought – properly taught and executed – represents that kind of holistic perspective.”

Ecotech’s business program provides students with knowledge and skills suitable for employment in a broad range of private and public sector organizations. Coursework includes accounting, financial analysis, human resources, project management, communications, customer service, sustainability, renewable energy and workplace ethics. In two years, graduates with a sustainability degree from Ecotech will have an understanding of the cleantech landscape and how sustainability plays a role in today’s businesses environment.

Ecotech Institute is committed to being a foremost expert on jobs in the cleantech economy. As part of that commitment, its “Clean Jobs Index” breaks down clean jobs by state with links to local jobs. To find available positions, Ecotech uses jobs data from Burning Glass International, whose patented job aggregation technology searches for job listings from more than 17,000 sources.

Ecotech Institute initiated and produces the Clean Jobs Index using several independent organizations. The sustainability factors of the Index data are updated on a quarterly and annual basis (depending on when new data is released) and job data is updated monthly as new jobs are posted.

Varsity Tutors Reveals the Real Cost of College in New Infographic

Resource Helps Parents & Students Better Understand the Breakdown of College Expenses and Make Informed Decisions

St. Louis, MO, April 06, 2013 – To empower parents and students during the college planning process, Varsity Tutors, a premier one-on-one academic tutoring and test prep provider, today released an infographic that highlights all the costs of pursuing higher education. Entitled, “The Real Cost of College,” the infographic breaks down the average estimated costs for enrollment, sources of financial aid and debt averages for full-time undergraduate students.

Student debt surpassed credit card debt in the United States for the first time in 2010. In 2012, the average college student left school owing $27,000 in student loans. These are just a few statistics that emphasize how important it is to understand all the expenses of college and identify potential funding opportunities while planning a student’s path to higher education.

“Now more than ever, it’s crucial that parents and students are aware of the total cost of a degree,” said Varsity Tutors founder and CEO Chuck Cohn. “As the cost of tuition continues to rise, students need to be vigilant about planning ahead and finding the best options for funding their education, not only to attend college in the first place, but also to graduate with an amount of debt they can manage.”

The infographic features key findings from the College Board Annual Survey of Colleges, including these telling statistics:

* The total annual expense of attending an in-state public four-year institution – tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other expenses – averages $22,261; while an out-of-state four-year public institution averages $35,312 and a private non-profit college or university averages $43,289 each year.

* $237 billion in financial aid was given during the 2012-13 school year; the average student received $13,218 in financial aid.

* 67 percent of 2009 college graduates are in debt with student loans.

The infographic also highlights the different types of financial aid available to students, from grants and scholarships to loans and work study programs. To learn more about the costs of higher education, view the full infographic at http://www.varsitytutors.com/blog/the+true+cost+of+college+infographic.

The monthly merit-based scholarship, open to U.S. residents ages 16 and older, provides students with the opportunity to earn $1,000 toward their college tuition. The current submission period began on April 1st and will close on April 15th.
