St. Louis, MO, August 28, 2013 – In an effort to ease students’ transition into their first year of college, Varsity Tutors, a premier one-on-one private tutoring and test prep provider, today released an infographic that details the ins and outs of dorm living. Entitled “Anatomy of a College Dorm Room,” the infographic highlights the basic essentials that every student needs to achieve the ideal campus housing experience.

2.46 million students elect to live on campus each year, a population that includes 78 percent of all college freshmen. Most new students are living independently for the first time, and adjusting to life on campus can be difficult.

“As a student, your living arrangement affects every aspect of your life, from your social experience to your academic performance,” said Varsity Tutors founder and CEO Chuck Cohn. “Varsity Tutors aims to help students more easily navigate their first year of college so they can achieve success all around.”

The infographic from Varsity Tutors features the layout of a typical dorm room and calls out tips and tricks for every element of dorm life, from hygiene and storage to study time and entertainment. Advice for those who are new to campus housing includes:

* Making sure to check whether your school provides regular or extra-long mattresses before you buy sheets for your bed.

* For extra security, buying a laptop tether to secure your computer to your desk when you’re not in your room.

* Remembering to bring extension cords to accommodate potential problems with room layout and limited outlets.

The infographic also highlights other key statistics on college students living on campus. View the full infographic at http://www.varsitytutors.com/blog/anatomy+of+a+college+dorm+room+infographic.

Varsity Tutors Selects Monthly Scholarship Winners for 2013 College Scholarship Contest

Varsity Tutors, the premier private tutoring and test prep service, has chosen four more winners in its 2013 monthly college scholarship contest.

St. Louis, MO, July 17, 2013 – Varsity Tutors, the premier private tutoring and test prep service, has chosen four more winners in its 2013 monthly college scholarship contest. With 2,000 tutors and 80 employees operating in 25 major metropolitan U.S. cities, Varsity Tutors offers the merit-based scholarship program to support students from all backgrounds in reaching their college goals. The company has selected and awarded a $1,000 scholarship prize to one student each month in March, April, May, and June.

The Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest gives students nationwide a monthly opportunity to submit an essay in response to a unique prompt to compete for a $1,000 scholarship to any accredited, post-secondary institution of their choice. Once entries are approved by the company, they are published on the Varsity Tutors website and students are encouraged to share their essays via social media to acquire as many votes for their submissions as they can; Facebook likes, Tweets, and Google+ shares are all valid forms of voting. The top five submissions with the most votes by the end of the voting period are then reviewed by the company, one of which is selected as the final winner. The entry period lasts from the 1st–15th of every month followed by the voting period, which takes place from the 16th through the end of the month.

Brandon Boyd (Martinez, Calif.), Samantha Swift (Largo, Fla.), Alexandra Benton (Lehigh Acres, Fla.), and Sarah Campbell (Ocean Springs, Miss.) were selected as the March, April, May, and June winners, respectively. Hundreds of students have entered the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest this year, and the number of entrants per month has consistently increased. The organization’s CEO and founder, Chuck Cohn, is honored to be able to aid so many students in financing their college educations.

“It’s always disappointing to hear when a student cannot attend the college of their choice just due to financial limitations,” Cohn says. “Our mission is to help students advance their educational goals, and many of those personal goals include attending college. We are proud to have created a scholarship that will help talented students attend college.”

Varsity Tutors Expands Operations to San Francisco, Seeking 100 Tutors

Premier tutoring service offering 1-on-1 personalized academic support for K-12 and college students in the Bay Area

St. Louis, MO, June 24, 2013 – Varsity Tutors, the leading private, in-home tutoring service with 25 metropolitan locations, is expanding its operations to another major metro area. As of June 2013, the company has started offering private tutoring services in the San Francisco Bay Area and is seeking 100 talented tutors for part-time roles.

The academic tutoring and test prep provider operates in many large markets including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Houston, and Atlanta. As college admissions has become increasingly competitive, the demand for top tutoring and test prep services, particularly for ACT tutoring, has increased. Varsity Tutors is responding to this demand by further expanding its geographic footprint. In addition to San Francisco, other expansion plans are in the works for the summer of 2013.

The new San Francisco tutoring location will cover the entire greater metropolitan area, including San Jose and Oakland. Expanding to the Bay Area had been on the company’s roadmap for several years as it grew into one of the largest private tutoring companies from its headquarters in St. Louis, Mo. Founder and CEO Chuck Cohn said he expects the Bay Area market to be one of Varsity Tutors’ largest centers of operation with 18 months.

“San Francisco was one of the last major U.S. cities left for us to enter. We are launching in three other major metro areas this summer, but my expectation is that San Francisco will be the largest of those markets for us,” says Cohn. “Expansion into locations where we can match the best tutors with students is key to our growth. We believe that we can offer a higher quality service at a lower cost than the existing tutoring companies in the San Francisco market.”

Varsity Tutors was started in 2007 by Cohn while an undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis. The small, college-based business quickly grew into a market leader with 2,000 tutors and 80 employees nationwide. The company’s tutors specialize in a wide selection of subjects including all academic areas of PreK-12, college, and graduate school courses, as well as test prep for entrance exams (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT). Tutors are chosen not just based on grades and test scores, but also on how effectively they are able to communicate challenging material.

Varsity Tutors’ San Francisco operations is open for business and taking inquiries.

Varsity Tutors Highlights Relationship Between Education and Income Level in New Infographic

Data Serves as a Resource for Parents and Students in Assessing the Value of College Degree

St. Louis, MO, June 04, 2013 – To help parents and students better understand the value of higher education, Varsity Tutors, a premier one-on-one private tutoring and test prep provider, today released an infographic that delves into the perceived importance and actual effects of higher education on income and career prospects. Entitled “Education vs. Income Level,” the infographic compares educational attainment to U.S. employment and salary statistics.

In 2009, 73 percent of Americans said they agreed with the statement, “In order to get ahead these days, it’s necessary to get a college degree,” compared to just 49 percent in 1978. This increasingly common perception aligns with employment and salary statistics for college-educated adults.

“Data has shown that highly educated individuals are more likely to earn higher wages throughout their lives,” said Varsity Tutors founder and CEO Chuck Cohn. “It’s important for parents and students to understand the value of a college degree when making decisions about their education and future career plans.”

The infographic features survey data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources, including these key facts:

* The unemployment rate for college graduates is well below the national average, and has been consistently lower than the rates of unemployment for individuals without a Bachelor’s degree over the past 10 years.

* In 2013, the unemployment rate for people with a Bachelor’s degree or greater was 3.7 percent, compared to 7 percent for those with some college experience or an Associate’s degree, 8.1 percent for those with a high school diploma, and 12 percent for those with less than a high school diploma.

* Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree are expected to earn $2.422 million over the course of their lives, compared to just $1.371 million for those with only a high school diploma.

The infographic also highlights differences in income among individuals with master’s and doctoral degrees, and compares wages and annual earnings across several career fields from Engineering to Social Sciences. Varsity Tutors Partners with Coinbase to Accept Bitcoin for Tutoring Services

New Currency Allows More Convenience, Fewer Fees for International Students & Their Families

St. Louis, MO, April 25, 2013 – Varsity Tutors, a premier private academic tutoring and test prep provider, today announced that it is now accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for its in-person and live-online tutoring services. While all clients will be able to pay using Bitcoin, the company anticipates that the greatest demand will be from students located abroad who purchase Skype-tutoring. Previously, international students seeking Varsity Tutors’ services, most often for language tutoring or SAT, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT test prep, could only process payment by credit card or bank transfer which assess foreign transaction fees. The addition of Bitcoin to its payment options will allow those who have adopted the digital currency to avoid traditional currency conversion costs.

“At Varsity Tutors, we’re constantly seeking out ways to better serve our clients, so if digital currency can make it easier for international students to access our tutoring services, it seems only natural to embrace it,” said Chuck Cohn, founder and CEO of Varsity Tutors. “Logistically, the process of integrating Bitcoin into our payment structure was very easy, and any simple change that can improve the client experience is a no-brainer.”

Varsity Tutors is accepting Bitcoin payment through Coinbase. A believer in the currency and technology, Cohn actually began investing in Bitcoin and the payment service last year. “As an entrepreneur, I’m a strong supporter of efficient and innovative technologies, so I’m very interested in the potential of digital currency not only in my business, but in the larger marketplace,” said Cohn.

Varsity Tutors provides in-home academic tutoring and test prep services in 19 major U.S. metro areas, as well as online via Skype. Students are expertly matched with a private tutor who delivers personalized, one-on-one instruction in any subject from STEM to the humanities, as well as preparation for standardized exams at all levels of education from K-12 to graduate school.

Varsity Tutors Reveals the Real Cost of College in New Infographic

Resource Helps Parents & Students Better Understand the Breakdown of College Expenses and Make Informed Decisions

St. Louis, MO, April 06, 2013 – To empower parents and students during the college planning process, Varsity Tutors, a premier one-on-one academic tutoring and test prep provider, today released an infographic that highlights all the costs of pursuing higher education. Entitled, “The Real Cost of College,” the infographic breaks down the average estimated costs for enrollment, sources of financial aid and debt averages for full-time undergraduate students.

Student debt surpassed credit card debt in the United States for the first time in 2010. In 2012, the average college student left school owing $27,000 in student loans. These are just a few statistics that emphasize how important it is to understand all the expenses of college and identify potential funding opportunities while planning a student’s path to higher education.

“Now more than ever, it’s crucial that parents and students are aware of the total cost of a degree,” said Varsity Tutors founder and CEO Chuck Cohn. “As the cost of tuition continues to rise, students need to be vigilant about planning ahead and finding the best options for funding their education, not only to attend college in the first place, but also to graduate with an amount of debt they can manage.”

The infographic features key findings from the College Board Annual Survey of Colleges, including these telling statistics:

* The total annual expense of attending an in-state public four-year institution – tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other expenses – averages $22,261; while an out-of-state four-year public institution averages $35,312 and a private non-profit college or university averages $43,289 each year.

* $237 billion in financial aid was given during the 2012-13 school year; the average student received $13,218 in financial aid.

* 67 percent of 2009 college graduates are in debt with student loans.

The infographic also highlights the different types of financial aid available to students, from grants and scholarships to loans and work study programs. To learn more about the costs of higher education, view the full infographic at http://www.varsitytutors.com/blog/the+true+cost+of+college+infographic.

In its continued effort to help students achieve academic excellence, Varsity Tutors recently launched a college scholarship program. The monthly merit-based scholarship, open to U.S. residents ages 16 and older, provides students with the opportunity to earn $1,000 toward their college tuition. The current submission period began on April 1st and will close on April 15th.
