Fulham Releases New White Paper at Strategies in Light – “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements”

Fulham White Paper Demystifies Light Performance Testing and Provides Valuable Tutorial for Anyone Interested in Lighting Certifications.

Long Beach, CA, USA — At Strategies in Light being held here this week, Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting sub-systems and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, will release a new white paper that provides an overview of new energy saving standards and LED product certifications. The white paper, entitled “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements,” is designed to help OEMs, distributors, and lighting professionals sort through the alphabet soup of today’s energy product testing and qualification as it relates to lighting products.

Product testing for certification are important to the lighting industry because they provide standardized metrics to compare product performance. Setting minimum performance thresholds promotes better quality lighting and superior luminaires for OEMs and end users. However, testing can cost manufacturers thousands of dollars for every new product brought to market. this white paper reviews strategies for product testing and how qualifying for the Design Lighting Consortium (DLC) Qualified Products List, compliance with Energy Star standards, and conforming to the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Title 24 Energy Code each play both unique and overlapping roles in lighting certification, testing, and labeling.

“OEMs and installers use DLC, Energy Star, and T24 labels to ensure that lighting products deliver optimal performance, conform to the building codes and energy conservation standards, and in many cases receive financial rebates and incentives on projects,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Certification gives customers assurance that the lighting products they buy or stock are safe and efficient. However, it’s not always easy for vendors to determine which certifications are required, or where to invest their testing dollars. This white paper should provide an informative tutorial for anyone in the lighting industry who relies on testing and verification to make product decisions.”

The new Fulham white paper outlines the testing requirements and regimens for the three most common U.S. certifications, comparing DLC, Energy Star, and Title 24 It also discusses specific requirements to for each standard and offers suggestions on ways to take advantage of overlapping requirements that can save test dollars.

Fulham will have copies of “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements” on hand at Strategies in Light in Booth 408. Copies also are available online at http://www.fulham.com/PDFs/Fulham-White-Paper-Energy-Star-DLC.pdf.

T5 Data Centers Enters European Market with Addition of T5@Ireland Data Center Campus

New Purpose-Built Data Center in Ireland Offers Same Robust Infrastructure as T5’s U.S. Facilities Just in Time for New Data Sovereignty Laws.

ATLANTA and CORK, Ireland — T5 Data Centers, innovators in providing secure, customizable, hyperscale computing environments for enterprise companies, has entered the European data center market with today’s announcement of a new joint venture with JCD Group of Cork, Ireland to develop the T5@Ireland data center campus. This is T5’s first data center outside the United States and will look to take advantage of the coming political changes in the European Union (Brexit and associated EU data sovereignty laws), and telecom and power infrastructure advantages in Cork to serve a growing need for companies seeking new data centers serving European and U.S. customers.

The new T5@Ireland campus is a 32.5-acre, 46 MW dedicated data center campus with full planning permission for two enterprise facilities of 7 MW each, and a cloud targeted facility of 32 MW. The site is carrier rich and will have direct access to Ireland’s five largest domestic fiber carriers, as well as subsea cable connectivity to the United States, United Kingdom and Europe via GTT Express (lowest latency between EU and US), GTT North & South, (secondary routes between US, UK and Europe), Aquacomm’s AEC-1 Cable (Ireland to NYC). Building I will be a 7 MW, 84,000 square foot facility and is due for completion in Q1, 2019, which will coincide with the landing of the Ireland France Subsea Cable (IFC-1), the first cable to directly link Ireland to mainland Europe. Building II will be a 97,000-square-foot, 7 MW data center, and Building III will be a 323,000-square-foot, 32 MW data center. As with all T5 facilities, each data center can be customized to accommodate any enterprise-grade or cloud computing deployment.

In addition to new EU data sovereignty laws which could drive data center traffic from the UK following Brexit, construction of T5@Ireland comes at an opportune time relative to power availability and telecom connectivity within Ireland. Dublin has historically been the preferred data hub of Ireland, but the region is experiencing a restriction on data center growth due to lack of adequate power. T5@Ireland is fed by 60 MW of power from an adjacent dual fed substation, and can deliver this power within expedited delivery deployments of new facilities. These and other market factors are driving more data center operations to strategic locations such as Cork.

“Now is the perfect time for T5 to build T5@Ireland as our springboard into Europe,” said Pete Marin, CEO & President of T5 Data Centers. “Cork is a growing technology hub with a great talent pool and robust infrastructure. We expect T5@Ireland to attract European customers seeking a new location for their enterprise operations, and for U.S. companies seeking a European data center presence. This is the next phase of T5’s global expansion strategy and shows our commitment to serve our customers wherever they need us.”

T5@Ireland Building I is a Class A data center designed to meet LEED Silver requirements. It features block-redundant 1.75 MW electrical lineups and can accommodate densities from 5 to 25 KW per rack. The Cork location also offers ideal climate conditions for indirect, free air cooling, and the building is equipped with Liebert DSE cooling for modular growth.

As with all T5 data centers, T5@Ireland will be managed by the T5 Facilities Management (T5FM) team. T5FM is responsible for T5 Data Centers’ record of 100 percent uptime, and serves as an extension to our customers’ IT staff, offering facilities operations and management, remote hands, and IT consulting services.

Fulham VP to Address Problems of Lighting Controls and the Need for Interoperable Standards at IoT Evolution

Fulham’s Russ Sharer to Show How Lighting Industry Serves as a Test Case for IoT Interoperability in Presentation on “How Smart Lighting Headaches are Delaying IoT”.

Orlando, FL, USA — For industrial lighting controls to become part of any Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure the lighting industry is going to have to overcome two primary hurdles: 1) lack of intelligence in lighting devices and 2) a lack of common control standards. That’s the primary focus of “How Smart Lighting Headaches are Delaying IoT,” a presentation to be delivered by Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham Co., Inc., at IoT Evolution to be held here January 22 -25.

Fulham is a leading supplier of programmable LED lighting sub-systems and has been working with lighting vendors and OEMs to shape the future of intelligent lighting and IoT. As Sharer notes, there already is a new category of “clever” LED lighting products with on-board intelligence and programmability. To elevate these clever devices to smart lighting requires integration as well as intelligence, providing two-way communications for device monitoring and control. This is where the lighting industry is lagging behind; adopting common communication standards that can integrate current lighting controls into an IoT infrastructure.

“The challenges the lighting community are facing are typical of many industries; how to develop a common set of protocols to integrate legacy smart devices into an IoT infrastructure, said Sharer. “Clearly, IoT is going to be the foundation for building automation, but there are too many proprietary lighting control and communications standards. Today, customers can choose between DALI, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and many more for lighting controls, but there is still no guarantee of integration with a central IoT platform.”

To complicate the interoperability issue, many vendors are creating their own flavors of popular control standards. For example, some vendors are using DALI electrically and signaling, but adding proprietary commands for basic functions. Similarly, Zigbee has multiple variants of commands for when a luminaire is turned “off,” so two luminaires can receive the same signal and one device dims while the other turns off completely, which matters when it comes to energy consumption and extending the life of the luminaire.

“The teething pains of the lighting control industry are the perfect test case for other IoT control applications,” said Sharer. “It shows that without a well-defined set of common control standards, there is no way to implement control using IoT.”

Sharer’s presentation, “How Smart Lighitng Headaches are Delaying IoT,” is scheduled to take place Thursday, January 25, at 10:00 a.m. – #IOTEVOLUTION.

Momentum Continues for T5 Data Centers with Addition of S&P 500 Client in Chicago

Information Technology Company Chooses T5@Chicago To Accommodate Rapid Growth.

Elk Grove Village, IL, USA — T5 Data Centers, innovators in providing secure, customizable, hyperscale computing environments for enterprise companies, today announced another pre-lease within Phase 2 of the T5@Chicago build-out. This is the second pre-lease with an enterprise company for T5 Data Centers in Chicago. Pre-leasing is challenging in the data center industry and occurs more often with hyperscale providers than it does with the enterprise. However, T5 was able to deliver a customized solution for this client and meet an accelerated time frame for a “rack-ready” data hall.

This S&P 500 Client needed immediate access to a Tier III data center in the Chicagoland area, but more importantly, that data center had to be both customizable and meet the stringent security and administrative criteria of highly regulated companies. T5 has extensive experience building custom data center solutions for customers in financial services, telecommunications, health care, and other regulated markets across the country.

“The complexity of these projects requires a cohesive team that communicates effectively and pays close attention to detail. The level of transparency we demonstrate to our customers provides them with a level of comfort and control, as if our operations staff was simply an extension of their team,” said David Horowitz, VP of Sales and Marketing for T5 Data Centers.

As customer IT requirements continue to evolve with the adoption of cloud computing, it becomes more important for providers to offer flexible solutions that align with corporate objectives. Horowitz adds, “This was an incredibly fast transaction that incorporated several important factors including a creative growth structure and a flexible ramp schedule. While the transaction structure remains instrumental in selecting a data center provider, our customers find tremendous value in the processes and procedures our T5 Facility Management teams have in place to ensure 100 percent uptime and to deliver exceptional customer service.”

T5@Chicago is a highly secured, 208,000 square-foot, Tier III data center located in Elk Grove Village. This LEED Silver certified data center was acquired by T5 Data Centers in 2016 and has been operating since its inception through T5FM, which provides best-in-class, award-winning facilities management services. T5 is currently in Phase 2 of its T5@Chicago build-out, adding a new secure data hall with an additional 2 mW capacity.

T5@Chicago is the company’s ninth U.S. data center and meets the resilient, high-quality characteristics consistent across T5’s portfolio.

Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) Announces Three-Lecture Series on Women in Arts Management in Early 2018

The Monterey Museum of Art will launch a three-part lecture series in January 2018, about honoring women who have made a difference in the creative arts.

Monterey, CA, December 24, 2017 — The Monterey Museum of Art will launch a three-part lecture series in January 2018, about honoring women who have made a difference in the creative arts.

The series, “Women Who Have Made a Difference in the Creative Arts,” opens Monday, Jan. 22, with “Living the Handmade Artist’s Life” with Elizabeth Murray, followed by “Musically Speaking, Leadership in the Arts,” with Nicola Samra, Executive Director of the Monterey Symphony, on Monday, Jan. 29, and finally, in honor of Black History Month, “A Dramatic Presentation of ‘Corn Hollow’ ” with author LaVerne McLeod, on Monday, Feb. 5.

All one-hour lectures will be held from 1-2 p.m. Mondays, at the museum’s 559 Pacific St. location. The lectures are free to museum members and free for non-members with general admission to the museum.

Admission is $10 for adults and free for students and active duty military with I.D. and those 18 years and under. Visitors are welcome to bring food and drinks during this lunchtime lecture series.

The first lecture features painter, photographer, author, international workshop leader, and gardener Murray, who will be sharing the stories of her life as a multi-faceted artist.

Murray’s passion for nature and beauty has taken her around the world — from remote African villages and the Amazon rain forest, to Giverny, France, where she helped restore Monet’s Gardens — inspiring her to create a diverse range of art works. Today some of her work resides in permanent installments in corporate collections.

As a popular keynote speaker, she uses the beauty of her photographic images, personal stories, garden metaphors, and humor, to inspire and connect her audience to what has meaning for them. Her goal is to help people express their own creativity in their work and personal lives.

Today, Elizabeth Murray lives in an historic artist colony belonging to painter Charles Rollo Peters in Monterey. She has been restoring the house, cottages and gardens for the last 18 years. The author of nine books, including best-selling “Monet’s Passion,” “Living Life in Full Bloom,” and “Cultivating Sacred Space,” Elizabeth Murray finds the garden to be both a life-enriching art form, and a path to intimacy with nature.

Nicola Samra will discuss the role of women in arts management — the challenges and the opportunities. She promises to address favorite topics such as “work/life balance,” and “successful fundraising tips.” She will also give her take on common questions such as “Is classical music is dying? “Can you have it all?” and “What is the role of art in society?. In the process, Samra will share her own path to becoming Executive Director, and the things she learned along the way.

A classically trained violinist, Samra has performed, toured, or recorded with Mastodon, Sky Cries Mary, and Sera Cahoone, in addition to founding the all-female string trio, The Bella Trio.

She previously held positions at the Carmel Bach Festival and California State University Monterey Bay, in the university’s development department. A Seattle native, Samra worked for the Seattle Chamber Music Society, the Women’s Medieval Choir, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Samra holds degrees in Spanish Literature and Music History from the University of Puget Sound, and an advanced degree in Arts Administration from the University of Washington.

In her spare time, Samra, along with her husband, Dr. Todd Samra, enjoy arguing about pronunciation and grammar, and playing Wiffleball with their three children, John (20), Connor (10) and Enzo (6).

Through an interactive performance of her novel, “Corn Hollow,” author LaVerne McLeod will tell the story of a young African American girl living in the heart of Tennessee during the rise of the civil rights movement.

The book is based on McLeod’s own experience with segregation in the American South. Using an innovative performance style, she will choose a chapter from her book, and bring the story to life by engaging the audience as participants.

McLeod has lived in communities in various parts of the country, including Arkansas, Missouri, and Palo Alto. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in Counselor Education from Southeast Missouri State University, with continuing education work from San Jose State University in California.

She has lived in Big Sur since 1979, where she balances life as a wife, mother, educator, artist, and author. McLeod also has a rich history of leadership involvement with our community, including creating and facilitating Bridge Building to Equity workshops.
