A Mission and a Message to Promote Access to Education

In Haiti, only 40% of the population is taught how to read, which means that the majority of the population is illiterate. Access to education is a sweeping issue that affects millions of people.

San Antonio, TX – USA, October 23, 2019 — In Haiti, only 40% of the population is taught how to read, which means that the majority of the population is illiterate. Access to education is a sweeping issue that affects millions of people. Corruption in the government and lack of funding are major systemic barriers which prevent widespread reform.

“Oftentimes, people don’t have the money to start school at a young age. I met people who only began attending school at the age of 13,” explains Angela Trujillo who first visited the country in 2014. These individuals often experienced trouble finding jobs. Since this initial trip, Trujillo has been back five more times, volunteering and raising money to help those in need.

“It was shocking to see the difference between the access to education in America and the conditions for so many young children in Haiti,” says Trujillo, who witnessed these issues on the ground. Students have to pay to attend school, but even sponsored students can get kicked out of their classes if they don’t have the proper socks and shoes.

Now, Trujillo has a new vision for change: to open a school “where all are welcome.” The school will be located on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. “I want to create a place where Haitians can thrive and learn and grow,” Trujillo says. Her goal is to create a school to help break the cycle of poverty that exists in Haiti. Fundraising efforts are already underway. To augment the process, Trujillo wrote her first-ever children’s book “Elizabeth Gets Healed.” 100% of the proceeds will be donated toward this cause.

This story was inspired by Trujillo’s own childhood. When she was 6 years old, the author was diagnosed with amblyopia, commonly referred to as lazy eye, which she was eventually able to overcome. “This is my testimony for children who face an obstacle in their path,” the author explains. “I want to empower children in America, and for them to know that they are contributing to the education of a child in Haiti.”

Publisher Lisa M. Umina comments, “We all need to know this story. Trujillo is working to empower children no matter where they live and no matter the circumstances into which they were born.”

Trujillo will hold story time followed by a craft activity for children on January 6th at 10:15 am at the Hellen Library in League City, Texas. On January 29th, there will be a meet and greet with the author also at 10:15 am in the same location.

“Students with Autism Have Something to Teach All of Us” – Says Educator Brooke Rutledge

Rates of autism are rising in the United States, and there is no clear explanation as to why this is happening.

San Antonio, TX – USA, October 23, 2019 — Rates of autism are rising in the United States, and there is no clear explanation as to why this is happening. One clear challenge that classrooms across the country face is how to identify and help cultivate the unique talents that these students bring to the learning environment.

With nearly a decade of experience in the classroom, special educator Brooke Kodish Rutledge has seen firsthand the impact that a unique student can have on those around her. For Rutledge, her student, Clara, became a special inspiration.

“Even though I was her teacher,” Rutledge says, “I want people to know that she taught me a lot as well. She taught me that everyone has a voice; it’s just that sometimes they are harder to hear at first. I helped Clara discover her own voice and how it could shape others.” Rutledge recalls one of Clara’s favorite sayings: Relax, you’re cool. This saying has stayed with Rutledge in the years since having Clara in her classroom. This was a mantra that Clara would repeat to herself in moments of stress to stay calm and work through the troubling situation.

Rutledge observed Clara, as she progressed from not being able to functionally communicate verbally to being able to make requests, speak in sentences, and even sing to her classmates. Seeing this transformation “was beautiful and inspirational,” Rutledge comments.

Rutledge decided to share Clara’s story with the world in hopes of touching others just as Clara touched her. She penned her first book for children, entitled “A Rainbow Shines Through Clara” to not only shed light on the challenges of autism but to also emphasize how hope and perseverance can change a child’s life.

“Clara’s story is unique,” the author explains. “I hope that it inspires other people like it inspired me. I want people to be moved and realize how special these children are.” The takeaway message? “Don’t be afraid to make a connection with them.”

Publisher Lisa M. Umina comments, “Rutledge has a valuable perspective on the special contributions of children with autism in the classroom. Rutledge is teaching a message that we all need to hear about accepting others and ourselves and celebrating our differences.”

Ice Cream Scientist Shows Children How to Make Their Own Fun in the Kitchen

With a certificate in culinary arts, Geno III has come to be known as the ice cream scientist. He explains that he decided to experiment on new flavors and recipes with his own children first.

San Antonio, TX – USA, October 9, 2019 — Children and teenagers today are spending more time on cell phones and screens than ever before. For parents, it can be difficult to limit screen time and direct their children to more creative activities not involving cell phones.

Father and business-owner, Geno III came up with a great alternative—making ice cream with his four kids. “They all love it,” he explains. “Their friends love it. Even the big kids love making ice cream. It’s something we can do together, and it doesn’t involve our cell phones.”

With a certificate in culinary arts, Geno III has come to be known as the ice cream scientist. He explains that he decided to experiment on new flavors and recipes with his own children first. Needless to say, his children agreed that this was a tasty arrangement. In addition to running ice cream experiments, Geno III also owns his own ice cream truck that he drives around Indianapolis, Indiana, where he lives.

Now, Geno III has owned the ice cream truck for two years. One year after buying the truck, he founded his own company: Yungsday’s Sundaes. Running a business is difficult, says Geno III, especially because he also works night shifts for Pepsi, but his passion for ice cream keeps him going. “I like to get creative,” he explains. “When it comes to ice cream, I am always creating a lot of new things.”

This creativity helped Geno III in his latest venture: writing his first-ever book for children: “Yungsday’s Sundaes Presents Patiently Shakin’ for Ice Cream.” His goal for the book? “I hope readers see how much fun it is to make ice cream. If you’re a parent like me, this is perfect for activity time with the kids.”

Geno III also introduces Standard Operating Procedures, or SOPs, in his book to teach children yet another life skill. “I included SOPs so that children will learn something they may later take with them to use on the job.” Geno III has termed ice cream making “useful recreation.” Children are partaking in an activity that they enjoy, all the while learning important skills that will serve them in the future. Geno III will also be offering ice cream kits as well that contain all of the ingredients to make ice cream: young scientists only need to provide a bottle of water and ice cubes.

Publisher Lisa M. Umina adds, “This activity is sure to be a hit for families. I never realized that making homemade ice cream was so simple or that it could be such a fun activity. Geno III changed that.”

Award-Winning Author and Journalist Empowers Women to Overcome Fear

As an Emmy award-winning anchor and author, Romona Robinson has interviewed thousands of people who are struggling in jobs they hate, strapped by their finances, children not measuring up, relationships gone bad, or poor health.

San Antonio, TX – USA, October 9, 2019 — If you have been controlled by voices of fear, failure, and doubt, you’re like thousands of women who feel trapped by fear and circumstance. Romona Robinson knows this all too well. As an Emmy award-winning anchor and author, she has interviewed thousands of people who are struggling in jobs they hate, strapped by their finances, children not measuring up, relationships gone bad, or poor health. They have grown weary, searching for answers about why God has not come to their rescue while everyone else is seemingly living their best life.

Now, back with her second book “Your Voice is Your Power,” Robinson hopes to answer these questions through personal stories that silenced the voices of fear, anxiety, and insecurity in her own life. “The truth is I was living a lie, blinded by who society said I should be,” says the author. “Sometimes we have to speak our truth in order to move past the problem.”

It was through 30 years of interviews and community work that Robinson discovered the power of sharing her story. People had questions for her. “Women and girls in particular would ask: how were you able to push past life’s roadblocks?” Robinson realized that her stories had the potential to help others who were facing similar challenges.

Robinson made a career-changing decision: “I’m going to use my voice to help people.” She left her job in television and started writing down her own story to share with the world.

Robinson’s memoir “A Dirt Road to Somewhere” was met with “an outpouring of support.” But readers had more questions, and Robinson had more stories to tell, so now in “Your Voice is Your Power” Robinson writes intimately and honestly about the challenges she’s faced, from losing a job to losing a parent, equipping readers with the tools to start using their own voice and overcoming whatever obstacle is holding them back.

“I hope the stories in this book will help people realize that they have the power within themselves to move past those voices of fear that hold them back,” says Robinson.

Publisher Lisa M. Umina comments, “This is truly a transformative read. Robinson shows readers, step by step, how she was able to move past fear in her own life and how they can do the same thing. Readers will relate to Robinson on every page, and they will be empowered to make a change.”

“Tending My Garden: A Celebration of Love, Life and Blessings” is the Perfect Blend of Poetry and Photography

Poetry speaks to the heart, rhyming words that cut right to what is most important in life and first time author Jacqueline Miller Brown has captured that spirit in her book “Tending My Garden.” Her faith and trust in God’s love is abundantly clear in each poem whether she speaks of family love or the trials of life.

Utica, MS (USA), June 25th, 2017 — Poetry speaks to the heart, rhyming words that cut right to what is most important in life and first time author Jacqueline Miller Brown has captured that spirit in her book “Tending My Garden.” Her faith and trust in God’s love is abundantly clear in each poem whether she speaks of family love or the trials of life. Readers will find solace and joy in this beautifully appointed book in which each chapter is punctuated with the exquisite garden photography of her husband of 46 years, John Brown.

“I have been writing poetry since elementary school,” said Jacqueline Miller Brown. “Poetry comes naturally to me and I find it is the easiest way for me to convey the many blessing that God has provided throughout my life. I started by writing poems as a way to celebrate family and friends during their special moments in life. Poetry became a vehicle to acknowledge special events and made for personalized treasures that people looked forward to receiving.”

Open “Tending My Garden” at random and you’ll find a loving tribute to life and love and God that is meant to encourage the reader. Brown’s hope is that through her poetry, people will appreciate the little things in life and see that there is beauty all around, even in the midst of a world troubled and divided.

“I hope readers will be inspired, motivated, consoled and encouraged by my poems,” said Brown. “I believe that if we take the time to notice God’s gifts around us and see the beauty that God has blessed us with, that the world will be a much more loving place.”

“Tending My Garden” touches on the apparent and sometimes-hidden celebrations that we experience as a part of faith, family, relationships, coming of age, and the circle of life. Each chapter, eloquently illustrated with a single, photographed flower, helps us realize how fortunate we are and how our heavenly Father positively touches our lives every day.

John Brown, Jacqueline’s husband, is an avid photographer and finds great joy in capturing the beauty of a single bud. The photos throughout “Tending My Garden” have been taken by John and each image is so clear you can almost smell its beauty.

“I love flowers and for years my husband has enjoyed taking photos of our garden,” said Brown. “I saw this book as a wonderful opportunity to combine both our love of God and our individual gifts of poetry and photography. I am hoping “Tending My Garden” will be a global message that speaks to people from all walks of life and perhaps will even bring some people to want to learn more about the love of God.”

“Tending My Garden” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other outlets in paperback for $13.95.

Handing Out Life the Newest Release from Halo Publishing International

Rev. Dr. Todd Biermann Provides Tangible Strategies for Developing Rewarding Relationships.

Grand Blanc, MI (USA), May 12th, 2016 — Relationships can be challenging. Whether the relationship is between a married couple, a parent and child or dear friends, each connection ebbs and flows through happy and challenging times. Rev. Dr. Todd A. Biermann’s new book Handing Out Life: The Simple Way to Rewarding Relationships in All of Life, provides the reader with easy to understand and implement tactics for improved communication and a deeper connection in marriage and every other relationship.

“As far back as college I have been witnessing the dynamics of relationships; those that work and those that struggle,” said author Rev. Dr. Todd Biermann. “I noted a strong correlation between the math and science I studied and the order of God’s message. I began counseling couples using three simple concepts found in the Bible of sacrifice, unconditional commitment and physical care.”

Handing Out Life: The Simple Way to Rewarding Relationships in All of Life, is divided into three sections. The first is a real life parable of Josh who is on the brink of losing everything that he holds dear; family, home, career and perhaps even his sanity. He learns new priorities and gains the tools he needs to move toward rewarding relationships. In the second portion of the book Biermann explores the words of God found in Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5 and Ephesians 5:31 that illustrate how Jesus loves us and we in turn should love each other. The final section offers eight Bible study lessons that delve further into the Word and how we can apply it to our lives, including a section specific to single individuals.

“Although the basic principles are rooted in Scripture, this isn’t a book just for the churched,” says Biermann. “The message is clearly one of forgiveness and spiritual strength. It applies to everyone. Those that desire a closer, healthier relationship with someone special in their life will benefit from the simple and timeless wisdom offered within the pages of Handing Out Life.”

“I have enjoyed working with Pastor Todd,” said Lisa Umina, founder and president of Halo Publishing International. “The message in his book is easy to understand and the illustrations and exercises help to solidify the lessons in a way that is memorable. His book is a great gift for newlyweds, those special couples in your life and really anyone who seeks a closer relationship with those in their lives.”

Handing Out Life: The Simple Way to Rewarding Relationships in All of Life, helps unlock the mystery to rewarding relationships with God, family, friends, work associates, and even enemies. You will be able to remember what you learn with two simple illustrations that are as clear as your hand in front of your face. Be prepared to hand out life. Handing Out Life is available as a paperback ($14.95) and in e-book format ($6.99) at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Halo Publishing.

Dr. Biermann will be giving a brief talk on Handing Out Life at 6:00p.m. and signing books until 8:00p.m. at McFarlen Library, 515 Perry Rd., Grand Blanc on Thursday, July 14. Public invited. Refreshments and door prizes (including an electronic book reader) will be provided.
