Bryant & Stratton College Announces The Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship

New scholarship honors College’s longest-serving employee, Lori Appleford; eligible to new students interested in enrolling in administrative programs

Buffalo, NY, August 22, 2013 – Bryant & Stratton College announced today the launch of the Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship. The Scholarship recognizes Bryant & Stratton College’s longest-serving employee, Lori Appleford, who is retiring from the College at the end of this month after 45 years with the College. It honors her commitment to academic and professional excellence and is available to eligible students interested in enrolling in the College’s administrative programs.

Ms. Appleford started her career at Bryant & Stratton College as a student and has worked for the College longer than any employee in the institution’s history. Prior to graduating, she began working in a temporary capacity for Bryant Girl, a subsidiary of the institution, which provided temporary secretarial assistance to area businesses. She graduated from Bryant & Stratton College in September 1968 and that November was hired as a full-time keypunch operator for the College.

In the years to follow, Ms. Appleford was promoted to a position in the payroll division and served as Executive Administrative Assistant to Francis (Fran) Gustina, Treasurer at Bryant & Stratton College. In 1980, Mr. Gustina became President of Bryant & Stratton and Ms. Appleford continued as his Executive Administrative Assistant. Subsequently, Ms. Appleford served in this position for five different presidents. While supporting the respective Presidents, Ms. Appleford provided assistance for a number of Vice-presidents, Directors and professional staff. In addition, Ms. Appleford has been responsible for all administrative matters related to the Board of Directors.

“Lori’s absence will be felt when she retires at the end of the month and by creating the Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship, we not only honor her service, but her legacy as well,” said Dr. Fran Felser, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Bryant & Stratton College. “The Appleford Scholarship is a fitting tribute to our friend and colleague whose dedication and commitment to the College is an inspiration to all. The significant contributions she made over her 45 year career with the College will continue on as the Appleford Scholarship helps future generations of administrative professionals realize career success as well.”

The Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship may be awarded to new students enrolling in administrative programs at any of the New York State campuses. To be eligible, students must submit a written essay prior to their third week of their first term. Full and part-time students, who maintain their academic standing in accordance with the College’s established scholarship guidelines, may be awarded up to $1,000 per term not to exceed $5,000. Up to 10 scholarships may be awarded in each semester. Students interested in applying for the Appleford Scholarship should contact their local campus.

After retirement, Ms. Appleford plans to stay involved in the Buffalo community by volunteering at the Botanical Gardens as well as spending time with her family and traveling.

With 2,000 tutors and 80 employees operating in 25 major metropolitan U.S. cities, Varsity Tutors offers the merit-based scholarship program to support students from all backgrounds in reaching their college goals. The top five submissions with the most votes by the end of the voting period are then reviewed by the company, one of which is selected as the final winner. The entry period lasts from the 1st–15th of every month followed by the voting period, which takes place from the 16th through the end of the month.

Brandon Boyd (Martinez, Calif.), Samantha Swift (Largo, Fla.), Alexandra Benton (Lehigh Acres, Fla.), and Sarah Campbell (Ocean Springs, Miss.) were selected as the March, April, May, and June winners, respectively. Hundreds of students have entered the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest this year, and the number of entrants per month has consistently increased. The organization’s CEO and founder, Chuck Cohn, is honored to be able to aid so many students in financing their college educations.

“It’s always disappointing to hear when a student cannot attend the college of their choice just due to financial limitations,” Cohn says. “Our mission is to help students advance their educational goals, and many of those personal goals include attending college. We are proud to have created a scholarship that will help talented students attend college.”

Bryant & Stratton College Online Extends Scholarship to Spouses of National Guard and Reserves Service Members

Salute to Spouses Scholarship Program now open to all military spouses; awards up to $6,000 to eligible applicants

Buffalo, NY, November 09, 2011 – In advance of Veteran’s Day this week, Bryant & Stratton College Online wants to recognize the sacrifices of military spouses and announced today that spouses of National Guard and Reserves service members are now eligible for the Salute to Spouses Scholarship program. The scholarship program offers military spouses an opportunity to advance their education and become more competitive in the modern job market. Salute to Spouses scholarships are for online degree programs at Bryant & Stratton College, which is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. To date, Bryant & Stratton College Online has awarded scholarships worth up to $324,000 to spouses of veterans and active duty military personnel.

“Veterans of all branches of service and their families deserve our thanks all year round, but especially on Veteran’s Day. At Bryant & Stratton College Online we are proud to support our military students, as well as their families by connecting them to opportunities and resources that will help them further their careers. By opening up the Salute to Spouses Scholarship to include National Guard and Reserves spouses, we are increasing access to the education they need to be more competitive in the modern job market,” said Ed Dennis, Military Relations Manager at Bryant & Stratton College Online.

Bryant & Stratton College Online launched the Salute to Spouses Scholarship program in March 2010. Salute to Spouses awards eligible military spouses scholarships up to $600 (for part-time students) or $1,200 (for full-time students) per semester for online degree programs offered by Bryant & Stratton College. The maximum scholarship award a recipient can receive is $6,000. All Salute to Spouses Scholarship recipients must meet Bryant & Stratton College scholarship guidelines to receive the full award.

As a complement to the Salute to Spouses Scholarship, Bryant & Stratton College Online launched SalutetoSpouses.com in April 2011. The site features personal stories, advice, tools, tips and opportunities for community discussion. The content on SalutetoSpouses.com is created and edited by military spouses and serves as a resource for education and career advancement information for military spouses.

“SalutetoSpouses.com is a great resource for all military spouses. Since all of the contributors are military spouses, we know from firsthand experience that being married to the military doesn’t necessarily end when your troop stops actively serving. For that reason our articles and stories are created for spouses of both active duty personnel and veterans,” said Allison Perkins, Editor at SalutetoSpouses.com.

In addition to the resources Bryant & Stratton College Online offers through Salute to Spouses, it also provides support to active duty and military students. This year the College formed Student Veterans of Bryant & Stratton College Online, a support network for students who have served in the U.S. military, are currently serving, their families and civilian supporters. The student-led group focuses on building upon available resources that make success in the classroom and workplace more attainable. Bryant & Stratton College Online also provides early enrollment options for all veteran and military students and their family members to sign up for classes before the general student body.

Recently, G.I. Jobs Magazine again named Bryant & Stratton College Online a Military Friendly School. As a member of the Service Members Opportunities College (SOC) consortium*, Bryant & Stratton College Online adheres to the SOC principles for service members and their families. They are also an approved institution for the training of U.S. veterans and their family in accordance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Bryant & Stratton College Online participates and accepts transfers from CLEP, DANTES, ECE and other SOC Colleges..
