Bryant & Stratton College Graduates 2,984 Students in 160th Anniversary Year

Bryant & Stratton College announced a college-wide annual graduation total of 2,984 students for the period July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, as it celebrates its 160th anniversary of providing career-focused education.

Buffalo, NY, August 22, 2014 — Bryant & Stratton College announced a college-wide annual graduation total of 2,984 students for the period July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, as it celebrates its 160th anniversary of providing career-focused education. Bryant & Stratton College has graduated more than 28,000 students since 2000, reflecting the strength of its academic programs and the motivation of its students.

“Our students come from many different backgrounds, but they all share a desire to succeed,” said Cindy Susienka, President and CEO of Bryant & Stratton College. “Earning a college degree is one of the most important ways that individuals can prepare themselves for success in their careers and in their lives.”

“As they enter the workforce, these graduates have a significant, positive impact on the local economy,” added Susienka. “The investment in their education is also an investment in the future of their communities. I’d like to congratulate each of our graduates for their achievement and their commitment.”

Today, demand for post-secondary education in jobs has never been higher. It is estimated that by 2025 there will be a gap of more than 20 million unfilled jobs due to the lack of post-secondary degrees.

To meet the demand, Bryant & Stratton College is developing innovative approaches to education that will foster greater student satisfaction and ensure that students have the skills to be successful in a technologically savvy workplace. This includes academic programs in which traditional classroom time is being supplemented with online learning activities.

“The purpose of integrating digital learning into the classroom is to better meet the needs of individual students and offer more personalized instruction,” said Susienka. “The traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to education is no longer valid in today’s dynamic market. We are planning to introduce new technology that helps students learn at their own pace by adapting to the student’s knowledge level and tailoring future lessons to match the student’s progress.”

Susienka said that blending online learning with classroom study takes advantage of the best features of both by reinforcing, complementing, and elaborating on one another. “A blended approach to education enables students to participate fully in the learning process on campus as well as remotely. They are able to learn and study in a fashion that is consistent with today’s workplace,” she added.

Innovation has been the key to the 160-year longevity of Bryant & Stratton College. “The founders of Bryant & Stratton College developed an educational approach that was unique for its time,” said Susienka. “When Bryant & Stratton National Business College was founded in 1854, most people entering the business world had to rely on scarce apprenticeships. The idea of teaching business skills in classrooms and business labs was an innovation that helped build the foundation of American business.

“For 160 years, the primary focus of the College has been to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that employers want so our graduates can enter the workforce with the competitive advantage of proven performance in their field,” added Susienka. “Although our teaching methods have changed over time, that basic philosophy has not.”

“It is an incredible honor to be awarded the distinction of Top Military-Friendly School. In addition, Ms. Appleford has been responsible for all administrative matters related to the Board of Directors.

“Lori’s absence will be felt when she retires at the end of the month and by creating the Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship, we not only honor her service, but her legacy as well,” said Dr. Fran Felser, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Bryant & Stratton College. “The Appleford Scholarship is a fitting tribute to our friend and colleague whose dedication and commitment to the College is an inspiration to all. The significant contributions she made over her 45 year career with the College will continue on as the Appleford Scholarship helps future generations of administrative professionals realize career success as well.”

The Lori Appleford Administrative Excellence Scholarship may be awarded to new students enrolling in administrative programs at any of the New York State campuses. To be eligible, students must submit a written essay prior to their third week of their first term. Free career readiness coaching sessions will cover resume and cover letter writing, job interviews, using LinkedIn, managing your online reputation and negotiating your salary.

Employability Week events and the “Job Ready or Not?” Employability Summit are aimed at helping close the perception gap between how job seekers view their own employability and what employers value. According to a new survey from Bryant & Stratton College’s Online Education Division and Wakefield Research, 80 percent of 18-34 year olds feel they are job ready and possess all the skills, experience, and education needed to advance in their desired career path or obtain their next job. Comparatively, data released by global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company found almost 40 percent of employers attribute the main reason for job openings to lack of skills among entry-level applicants. The research indicates that college students and young employees have inflated assumptions about their own career readiness in today’s job market.

“Being a viable candidate in today’s job market takes an understanding of what employers want, a firm grasp on how to present your skills and access to quality career resources. Employability Week touches on all of these tenets so our students and other job seekers can feel job ready,” said Paul Bahr, Director of the Western New York Campuses of Bryant & Stratton College. “Our core mission at Bryant & Stratton College has always been to provide students the training and education they will need to be successful in their careers. Employability Week is an opportunity to do that for our students as well as the greater Western New York community.”

Ready for a New Job? Bryant & Stratton College Hosts Career Expo and Job Fair in Akron on June 11

Over 30 area businesses will be in attendance and ready to interview qualified candidates; students and job seekers alike can also receive resume help and polish their interview skills with College experts

Akron, OH, May 29, 2013 – Bryant & Stratton College announced today that it will host a career expo and job fair at its Akron campus on June 11. Over 30 area companies will be in attendance and ready to speak with qualified job seekers. Additionally, campus career experts will be on hand to provide tips on how to improve resumes and interview skills. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 190 Montrose West Avenue.

Campus officials encourage job seekers, especially those interested in the medical and healthcare field to attend. To help attendees prepare for the event, Bryant & Stratton College offers these tips for being successful at a job fair:

* Be prepared – Attendees should bring plenty of copies of their resume for potential employers. Additionally, attendees only have a brief window of time to make a good impression. Preparing a short introduction, also known as an elevator speech, that highlights personal background information, leadership or professional successes and the reason a candidate will be an asset to a company will help quickly grab a recruiter’s attention. “Being able to communicate who you are and what you might bring to a company in under two minutes is a critical skill at a job fair. Attendees will be meeting with several potential employers and you want to be sure to leave a good impression,” said Dr. Florentine Hoelker, Akron Campus Director, Bryant & Stratton College. “Having a couple questions prepared is also a good way to show you will be a thoughtful and proactive employee.”

* Be polished – Looking and sounding professional are critical at a job fair. There is always a chance of being interviewed on the spot at a job fair, so attendees should plan to wear suits just as they would to any other interview. Practicing answers to common interview questions is also helpful and can help attendees communicate confidence.

* Be polite – Companies often meet hundreds of applicants during a job fair so little things can go a long way. Job seekers who say thank you at the end of a meeting or get the recruiter’s business card and send a hand-written thank you note give themselves a chance to stand out among the crowd.

“Job fairs are a great opportunity to meet with several employers in a short amount of time. However, attendees only have one chance to make a good impression, so it’s a good idea to spend time planning for the event,” said Dr. Hoelker. “At Bryant & Stratton College part of our mission is to teach students employability skills and make sure they are career ready upon graduation. This fair and expo is part of that effort. We are very excited to help job seekers connect with prospective employers and get any extra help they need with their job search from our knowledgeable counselors.”
