Big Sur Health Center Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary at Annual Big Sur Health Fair, Set for Oct. 8, 2019

The Big Sur Health Center’s Health Fair has been held for almost 20 years, but this year’s event, set for Oct. 8, takes on a little more significance.

Big Sur, CA, October 02, 2019 — The Big Sur Health Center’s Health Fair has been held for almost 20 years, but this year’s event, set for Oct. 8, takes on a little more significance.

In addition to free flu shots, counseling, a free barbecue, live music and more, the non-profit Health Center will be celebrating its 40th anniversary at the popular event, which is set for noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, on the grounds of the center at 46896 Highway 1, in Big Sur.

The fair will also offer free blood pressure checks, cholesterol and blood sugar screening through Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), free counseling services by BSHC medical providers and nutritionists from CHOMP who can answer questions about diet, lifestyle and weight. The cholesterol and blood sugar screenings are done through a simple finger-stick and results will be available instantaneously.

At 2 p.m., speakers from foundations that support the center (Community Foundation for Monterey County, Monterey Peninsula Foundation and the Harden Foundation), CHOMP President/CEO Dr. Steven Packer, and some of our elected officials will celebrate the 40th anniversary during a short program.

“Sometimes I have to pinch myself; it’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years. I wish I had kept a diary. There have been so many bumps in the road, but we’ve weathered them all,” said Sharen Carey, executive director of BSHC, who has been involved with the center in various capacities since 1985. “It’s been such a joy to see it grow from the early days to what it is now, being open five days a week and so busy it’s hard to keep up. We have a wonderful professional staff and the great support of our board of directors.”

The Health Fair had initially been founded to serve and inform the local workforce, but it has grown to be a cherished community event.

“We targeted local businesses because we want to keep our workforce healthy, but the health fair is open to everyone,” says Carey. “We’ve even had tourists who dropped by and were thrilled to participate. It’s always a wonderful way for community members to get together. It feels like a reunion and gives us time to visit with our neighbors and friends.”

There will be a free organic barbecue for lunch, music by Monterey Peninsula musician Rick Chelew, as well as a Children’s Corner with books, toys and games. It’s a fun and lively event, but the fair is all about early prevention of health problems.

“We’re all about prevention, that’s what the Health Fair is all about,” says Carey.

As the Health Center celebrates its 40th year, Carey says she’s encouraged about the future of the center.

“The Health Center, by all standards, should have gone out of business a long time ago,” she says. “The statistics say that you need 5,000 people for one health provider, and our community is 1,600, with about 300-400 who come from the Peninsula. So we’ve overcome those statistics through the generosity of our foundations and many donors.

“We used to have a receptionist who would say to me, when we would have a problem, ‘Sharen, it’s OK, the Health Center has a life of its own.’ It’s been my mantra ever since.”

For more information on the Health Fair, call (831) 667-2580.

About Big Sur Health Center

BSHC was founded in September 1979, through a local, grass-roots effort, to meet the needs of this rural community through its mission to provide quality comprehensive medical care to all in Big Sur regardless of ability to pay. In 1985, BSHC became a 501(c)(3) corporation with a volunteer Board of Directors. That same year BSHC relocated from the Big Sur Grange Hall to the grounds of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Carmel, 1/8 mile south of the Big Sur River Inn.

Ultimately, through a community-wide fundraising and development effort by BSHC and volunteer members of the Big Sur community, along with financial support from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and other foundations, we opened a new 2,100 sq. ft. medical facility in November 2004 to replace an aging building that we had long-past outgrown.

The presence of BSHC is crucial to the welfare of the Big Sur Community. As the only medical facility between the Monterey Peninsula (30 miles to the north) and Cambria (70 miles to the south), BSHC plays a vital role in the local community, serving the health care needs of the population by providing local, culturally and linguistically appropriate, affordable, quality medical care.

The hazardous coastline of Big Sur, combined with extreme weather conditions, road closures and frequent large-scale fires, underscores the critical need for the local presence of BSHC. Our centrally located facility is easily accessible to residents and tourists with urgent care needs. During road closures and other community disasters, BSHC provides 24-hour-on-call service, home welfare visits, medication service (at times, via helicopter transport) and coordination with local emergency teams.

From the early days at the Grange Hall, providing basic first aid, BSHC has developed into a busy family practice with over 1,200 patient visits annually.

Theme of 2019 Monterey County Fair, ‘High Tides and Carnival Rides,’ and official poster unveiled

The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

Monterey, CA, November 18, 2018 — The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

The fair also unveiled its official poster for this year’s event, featuring critters from the fair’s popular livestock displays and auctions, including a cow, horse, goat, rabbit, ewe, rooster and pig frolicking on the beach with a “woodie” station wagon and surfboards with the fair’s carnival rides in the background.

The poster was designed by artist Scott Westmoreland, who is well known for his surf, ocean, and woodie car-themed work. He also created official posters for the fair in 2009, with “Reel in the Fun,” in 2013 with “At the Heart of it All,” and in 2015, with “Farm Fresh Fun.”

Westmoreland began his career as an illustrator in the entertainment industry as an artist for major theatrical productions nationwide, including the Broadway stage. He has also worked with the Walt Disney Company and MCA Universal, later becoming a full-time staff artist at Disney. Westmoreland created numerous marketing, merchandising and collector edition pieces for Disney, as well as countless conceptual and developmental campaigns for Michael Eisner.

Westmoreland later rejoined the freelance world and is known as a “top 100” seller on Art.com. Westmoreland has been featured by television shows like Fox’s “Trading Spouses,” ABC Family’s “Knock First,” and in publications like “Decor” and “Total Art Licensing.”

“We are thrilled about the 2019 Monterey County Fair theme, it ties in a lot of our favorite things, including the beach, surfing, livestock and carnival rides,” says Kelly Violini, Monterey County Fair CEO. “We hope that everyone can come out and join us for next year’s fair.”

Westmoreland’s Monterey County Fair art will be featured through the course of the 2019 Fair as the Fairs’ graphic identity. His Monterey County Fair art will be seen as the 2019 poster and shown in all of the merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts and souvenirs.

The Monterey County Fair will run from Thursday, Aug. 29-Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road, in Monterey.

Jaguar ‘Trousseau Week 2014’ All Set to Celebrate the Diverse Cultural Beauty of the Traditional Indian Wedding

Presented by The Collection, UB City in association with Sublime Galleria and supported by the Prestige Group, Jaguar Trousseau Week 2014 will be on from 21st to 30th November 2014.

Bangalore, India, November 19th, 2014 — India is probably the only country in the world to boast of such a widely diverse population, comprising of people from different religions, cultures and communities. With varied traditional wear, rituals and customs, India is also considered an extremely colorful country, with more than two thousand ethnic groups, living together in unity. The 5th Edition of ‘Trousseau Week’ aims to celebrate the rich cultural diversity and traditions of the Indian wedding.

Presented by The Collection, UB City in association with Sublime Galleria and supported by the Prestige Group, Jaguar Trousseau Week 2014 will be on from 21st to 30th November 2014. The 10-day long wedding festival will provide all Wedding Planning, Design and Consulting needs under one roof, with the help of some of the trendiest international and national luxury brands in the world today on one hand, and Indian artisans and weavers on the other.

Sharing her thoughts on this year’s line-up of activities, Uzma Irfan – Additional Director, Prestige Group and Founder, Sublime Galleria said, “One of the most beautiful qualities of the Indian culture is that it is inclusive. The younger generation is not just limiting themselves to their own rituals and customs, but celebrating all traditions and festivals across communities as one unit. Also, with a rapid increase in the number of inter-religious and inter-communal marriages, people have started adopting the best from all cultures across the country. This year, ‘Jaguar Trousseau Week’ will focus on the rich culture and heritage that defines an Indian wedding, with special emphasis on the artisans who have helped keep our traditions alive by their contribution to the handloom/handwoven industry.

About Jaguar Trousseau Week 2014:
An Indian wedding today includes the most fun rituals from all cultures and is an amalgamation of activities leading up to the actual wedding. The ‘Sangeet’ ceremony, which was primarily a North Indian custom, has now found its place in every wedding across the country. And even though people have adopted the Western culture with fervor in India, what has remained constant is traditional clothes and jewellery, donned by everyone – family and friends alike, during the various wedding ceremonies. This year’s Trousseau Week pays a special tribute to the artisans who have contributed immensely to keep this industry alive. The festival will provide an opportunity to all visiting UB City to try their hand at some interactive weaving, guided by a weaver, at a handloom that will be installed there. Pragati Mathur – Textile Designer and Weaving Artist who is bringing this to UB City will also be available to accept orders for the elusive handloom/handwoven sarees, shawls, dupattas and wall textiles, etc. Orders can be placed on the basis of samples available for visual reference. In addition, Jaguar Trousseau Week 2014 will provide the best of wedding couture, wedding planners, designers, wedding photographers, banquets, tourism boards and international & national luxury brands, all on one platform.

This year’s theme is “The Traditional Indian Wedding” and the fluid expanse of The Collection, UB City will be transformed to complement this theme. The space will be accentuated with theme-based installations like an enormous wedding cake, a bejeweled groom pagdi, photo frame hangings, and an in-lit elephant sculpture. Smaller rituals will also be depicted using similar installations. For example, a giant groom mojri will be installed for the ‘Joota Chupai’ ceremony, larger than life kaliras will be installed to speak of the associated ceremony, and a decorated swing will be installed to signify yet another South Indian custom – ‘Oonchal’.

Lounges at Jaguar Trousseau Week 2014:
In its 5th Edition, ‘Trousseau Week’ has truly surpassed all previous benchmarks. With participation from stalwarts of the fashion design industry like Neeta Lulla, Raghavendra Rathore, JJ Valaya and Satya Paul, the event this year is a dream come true for brides and grooms to be. Now to plan the perfect wedding couture for their dream wedding, they will not have to travel to either Mumbai or Delhi. They can interact with the best designers in India and try out their latest collections, all in UB City. In addition, soon to be brides and grooms can also check out the sought-after F-Type and XJ models of Jaguar, which will be present at The Collection, UB City throughout the event.

Categorised under four key art verticals – Theatre, Dance, Music & Visual Art, Sublime brings the best in the art industry to mentor & guide these children.
