Rosendin Electric Receives 2016 DBIA Project/Team Award for Los Angeles Valley College Monarch Center Project

Excellence Award in Educational Facility Category Presented for Creative Design-Build Collaboration and Expediting Solutions in the Field.

La Palma, CA, USA — Rosendin Electric (http://www.rosendin.com), one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and an employee-owned company, has received a 2016 Project/Team Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for its contribution to the construction of the Los Angeles Valley College Monarch Center. The Monarch Center was one of three projects selected in the Educational Facilities category. Earlier this year, the Monarch Center project also received an Electrical Excellence Award from the National Electrical Contractors’ Association (NECA).

DBIA is the only organization in the United States dedicated to defining, teaching, and promoting best practices for construction design-build. To be considered for an award, a project must demonstrate the application of DBIA-defined design-build best practices, including bringing together team members during the proposal process, as well as close coordination from the design development stage through field construction and project completion.

The Monarch Center project represents a successful collaborative design-build project that offered Los Angeles Valley College the best design and value based on criteria, including mitigating any additional costs with expedited design-build solutions to address issues encountered in the field. Part of the challenge was completing the project without disrupting daily operations on the Los Angeles Valley College campus. The completed structure has a unique architectural design and houses the College’s bookstore, cafeteria, health services center, and other faculty and student facilities. The project was completed in 27 months at a cost of $46,661,760.

“The completed Monarch Center has an innovative design and interesting lighting and design features, such as roof lighting and a reflective canopy that eliminates the need for ground lighting,” said Dan Domenici, Project Manager for Rosendin Electric. “By working closely with the lead contractor, McCarthy Building Companies, and other project partners from the outset, we were able to overcome some unexpected challenges. Receiving recognition from the DBIA is something the entire design-build team can be proud of.”

Profiles of the winning 2016 design-build projects are available on the DBIA web site. Additional innovative design-build construction projects spanning education, transportation, technology, data centers, healthcare, and other industries are available on the Rosendin Electric web site, http://www.rosendin.com.

ENR Chooses Two Rosendin Electric Projects for 2016 Global Best Projects Awards

Rosendin Electric Projects Chosen Among the Best in the World in Categories of Green Projects and Residential/Hospitality.

San Jose, CA, USA — Rosendin Electric (http://www.rosendin.com), one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and an employee-owned company, is pleased to announce that two of the company’s 2016 construction projects, the Stanford Energy Systems Innovations central power plant replacement and construction of 399 Fremont Street in San Francisco, have been singled out for Global Best Project Awards by Engineering News-Record (ENR). The Stanford Energy Systems Innovation project was chosen for a Global Best Project Award in the category for best Green Project and 399 Fremont received an Award of Merit as an outstanding Residential/Hospitality project.

This is the fourth year that ENR has presented Global Best Projects Awards. There were 23 projects chosen this year spanning 15 countries and five continents, including the two Rosendin Electric projects. In selecting the winners, judges considered factors such as safety performance, innovations, design and construction quality, and construction challenges. Special consideration was given to the diversity of the project teams, and how the completed projects would benefit the community or the construction industry.

“Rosendin Electric prides itself on tackling some of the most challenging construction projects and bringing innovation, technology, and best building practices to every job,” said Jim Hawk, Executive Vice President of Preconstruction for Rosendin Electric. “Having our work singled out as the best worldwide is a real honor. Recognition by third-party industry leaders such as ENR is especially rewarding and serves as independent validation that our work is, indeed, world class.”

The Stanford Energy Systems Innovation project was a $438 million initiative to replace the central power plant at Stanford University with a system that would be 70 percent more efficient. The challenge was the replacement had to be made without disrupting power to the 25,000 people on the Stanford campus every day. The system changeover required 140 building conversions with 30 to 40 scheduled utility interruptions each week. The entire project took 14 months to complete.

Construction of 399 Fremont Street was an international effort with Rosendin Electric collaborating with firms from three continents. The 42-story, $195 million project includes 447 luxury rental units as well as a rooftop lounge, library, swimming pool, spa, conference center, and even a dog park. The project also includes the world’s largest solar water heater designed to reduce the energy required to heat water by 30 percent. Thanks to close collaboration among the teams through regular meetings, the project was completed in less than two years; two months ahead of schedule despite project challenges.

Profiles of other world-class construction projects spanning education, transportation, technology, data centers, healthcare, and other customers are available on the Rosendin Electric web site, http://www.rosendin.com.

Rosendin Electric Receives 2016 Constructech Gold Vision Award for Software Tool to Standardize Field Payroll Processes

New Time Tracking Integration Solution Wins Top Honors for Streamlining Payroll, Eliminating Errors, and Accurately Tracking Work Hours.

San Jose, CA, USA — Rosendin Electric (http://www.rosendin.com), one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and an employee-owned company, has received a 2016 Gold Vision Award from Constructech for developing a process to streamline and standardize field payroll for offices and job sites across the country. The new payroll solution eliminates coding errors, saves administration time on data entry and remediation, and provides project supervisors an extremely accurate picture of labor utilization and requirements, which is a real advantage in competitive bidding.

The Constructech Vision Awards acknowledge the accomplishments of companies that have applied technology in innovative ways to remain competitive in the field of construction. Rosendin Electric won this year’s Gold Vision award for developing Time Entry, a custom application designed to integrate AboutTime mobile resource management software with Oracle’s financial accounting system. The new Time Entry system has allowed Rosendin Electric to standardize payroll processing across all company offices. This system eliminates coding errors, reduces payroll processing time, and provides an accurate daily report of time worked. Said one project manager, “We now have validation in place. The new system enables us to catch errors we have not been able to in the past. We also reprocess fewer corrected paychecks thanks to the new system.”

“Rosendin Electric is continually assessing new technology and strategies that improve efficiency, but every new technology solution has to prove itself cost-effective,” said Diya Peter, Operations Applications Lead for Rosendin Electric. “Our new Time Entry system has already substantially reduced administration time and payroll errors. It has the added benefit of making our field superintendents more efficient and it gives management an accurate picture of worker hours required to increase bidding accuracy. We know that Time Entry has proven a winner for Rosendin Electric and we are delighted that Constructech agrees by granting us a Gold Vision Award.”

Before implementing the new Time Entry system, Excel timesheets were gathered from various regions, imported into a database for validation, and then moved to the Oracle platform for payroll processing. The challenge was that time was being charged to invalid task codes, in turn leading to substantial delays and remediation of paychecks. Regional managers were also spending more time gathering timesheets and checking them for accuracy.

With the new Time Entry system, Rosendin Electric project managers can now use their iPads or handheld devices to track and transmit time from the job site each day, leading to more accurate reporting without task code errors. Time Entry has allowed job superintendents to enter notes about reimbursements, job overrides, and other variables, thus, eliminating time-consuming communication between regional administrators and payroll staff. The new Time Entry also leverages RFID, QR/barcode badges to more accurately track workers time on the job.

This is the third consecutive year that Rosendin Electric has received a Vision Award. The company also received a Gold Constructech Vision Award in the category of Specialty Contractor: Electrical Work in 2015, 2014, 2012, and 2011.

Two Rosendin Electric Construction Projects Singled Out as “Best of the Best” for 2015 by Engineering News Record

Leading Private Electrical Contractor Key Contributor to ENR Winning Projects in Health Care and Energy/Industrial Categories.

San Jose, CA, USA — Rosendin Electric, one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and an employee-owned company, is pleased to announce that two of the company’s construction projects have been named Best of the Best for 2015 by Engineering News Record (ENR) magazine. Rosendin Electric was a key contributing contractor on both the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay and the Stanford Energy System Innovation construction projects, which were chosen as the Best Health Care Project and the Best Energy/Industrial Project, respectively.

The UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay in San Francisco is a $1.5-billion hospital construction project with 17 trade partners, including Rosendin Electric, led by DPR Construction. What made the UCSF Medical Center challenging was not only the scope and complexity of the project, but also the addition of plans to accommodate a new cancer-treatment center 18 months after construction began. Rosendin Electric was instrumental in working with the Building Information Modeling (BIM) team to create a detailed design using the latest BIM technology, and mapping the design for field inspection via mobile tablets. The project was finished at $200 million under budget, including $55 million in changes that were implemented without affecting the completion date.

The Stanford Energy System Innovation (SESI) project was a $380 million power systems upgrade to Stanford University’s power infrastructure to meet new, high-efficiency building standards and improve energy efficiency to existing buildings. The project included the addition of a high-voltage substation, installation of state-of-the-art solar arrays, and building a new central energy facility with the largest heat-recovery chillers installed in the U.S. Rosendin Electric was an important contributor to this project, aiding in the design-assist effort for the engineering and construction of the Heat Recovery Plant, OSHPD energy plant, new Administration building, and various site upgrades.

“There were more than 750 entries for ENR’s Best of the Best Projects and we are delighted that we had two projects selected as winners,” said Todd Mazza, Division Manager for Rosendin Electric. “Both the USCF Medical Center and the SESI project gave us an opportunity to display the latest in electrical engineering and design techniques, including computer modeling, prefabrication, and advanced solar technology. We are honored to be contributors to these types of innovative, ground-breaking projects.”

Rosendin Electric Ranks Third on EC&M List of Top 50 Electrical Contractors for 2015

New Construction Projects, Increased Demand for Data Services, and More Efficient Field Operations Contribute to Improved Revenues for Rosendin Electric.

San Jose, CA, USA (October 23, 2015) — Rosendin Electric, one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and an employee-owned company, was ranked third by revenue on the 2015 list of Top 50 Electrical Contractors compiled by Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M) Magazine. Rosendin Electric was the only privately held electrical contractor to rank in the top four in revenue.

Rosendin Electric was among 10 contractors on the EC&M list to post annual gains of 15 percent or more in 2014. Much of the growth is attributed to economic recovery, since overall revenue from electrical and telecommunications projects climbed from $15.7 billion in 2013 to $21.8 billion in 2014. Regional markets where Rosendin Electric has a strong presence, such as San Francisco and Silicon Valley, have seen resurgence in new construction in 2014 and 2015 due to pent up demand. Rosendin Electric also had a variety of projects in the industries that demonstrated the strongest growth – healthcare, data center, power, education, and manufacturing.

In addition to increasing their volume of construction projects, Rosendin Electric continues to be a pioneer amongst peers in the development of technology to improve operational efficiency. Rosendin Electric was one of the first electrical contractors to equip project managers, superintendents, and field supervision with tablets to allow them to review project specs and diagrams, clock workers in and out, manage the supply chain, and much more. The use of sophisticated materials tracking software, for example, supports just-in-time delivery of essential materials to the job site to eliminate construction downtime. In addition, Rosendin Electric provides its employees with comprehensive documentation and hands-on training, as well as webinars and video clips to improve efficiency and safety in the field, all of which contributes to improved efficiency and reduced costs.

“There are so many ways that technology has helped us to become more productive,” Sam Lamonica, CIO of Rosendin Electric, told EC&M. “We now have tools to help us with everything from estimating to modeling to prefabrication. The benefits are just so wide-ranging.”

“Diya is an evangelist for new ideas and new technologies and has been instrumental in bringing the latest applications to the field,” said Sam Lamonica, CIO of Rosendin Electric. “Her experience and passion have been instrumental in gaining the confidence of our field personnel and regional managers and getting them to embrace the latest technology tools.”

Ms. Peter has more than seven years of experience in developing and managing IT systems for the construction industry and she serves as a mentor to other women, drawing from her extensive experience in IT and construction to counsel them on future career opportunities. She is also active with an industry-related CIO Scholarship Fund, which has been tasked with starting a Young Professionals Group to support MIS students.

“I am honored to receive a Women in Construction Award,” said Ms. Peter. “Women are still a minority in the construction industry, and this award not only speaks to the value of my contribution, but it honors all of the women who are changing the face of construction.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women only make up 8.9 percent of the construction workforce, and even a smaller percentage contributes to construction technology. Constructech’s Women in Construction awards honor those women who are not only contributors to the construction industry, but also whose passion and leadership are shaping the future of construction.
