FED Publishing Releases New Book, “American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam” by SpearIt

American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam, by SpearIt, takes a sober look at our prison system, the 700,000 inmates released annually and their communities.

Houston, TX, USA — SpearIt’s American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam is a critical exploration of prisons in contemporary America. Paying special attention to race and Islam, the work draws on a range of data and sources, including interviews and written correspondence with current and ex-prisoners, documentary research, and congressional hearings on topics that include criminal justice and religion, culture, conversion, radicalization, and reform.

“The overarching message of my anthology, American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam, is that problems in prison are not isolated from society, and unlike the Las Vegas slogan, what happens in prison doesn’t stay in prison. Prisons are not neatly cornered off from society, but rather, are partners in toxic relationships with the communities to which ex-prisoners return.”

SpearIt is an Associate Professor of Law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University. He has taught for the Prison University Project at California’s death-row facility, San Quentin State Prison, as well as taught Corrections Law at Saint Louis University School of Law, in addition to serving on the Advisory Board of the Prison Program–a program that offers courses to both inmates and staff. He is currently active in the American Bar Association’s Corrections Committee and its work to restore Pell Grant Funding for prisoners.

Genre – American Prisons, Islam, Muslim, Conversion, Culture, Criminal Justice, Race, Religion, Latinos, Radicalization

The ebook version of American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam ISBN 9781506904887, published by First Edition Design Publishing (http://www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com), is available on-line wherever ebooks are sold. New Children’s Picture Book with Stunning Artwork Explores the World of a Hopi Indian Girl

Newly released picture book about a Hopi Indian girl takes readers through many metaphorical doors to explore the different aspects that make each our lives: family, friendship, culture, education, creativity, and nature.

Washington, DC (USA), November 19th, 2015 — Newly released picture book about a Hopi (pronounced: hope-ee) Indian girl takes readers through many metaphorical doors to explore the different aspects that make each our lives: family, friendship, culture, education, creativity, and nature.

TALASI… A Story of Tenderness and Love exposes children to new experiences as Talasi explores her native world and later the modern culture of the white man while holding to Native American beliefs and traditions. This charming and lovingly illustrated picture book teaches young readers how love and friendships get us over the rough spots in life and to never stop exploring the world around them.

Many American children are growing up in a multicultural world and are curious to understand all the cultures surrounding them. “Traveling through Arizona, I was terrible curious myself about what life on an Indian reservation was like when I visited a Hopi tribe,” said author Ellen S. Cromwell. “I wanted to understand the culture of these amazing people and visited with a kikmongwi, primarily a religious leader for the tribe. This experience truly touched me.”

TALASI… A Story of Tenderness and Love is about a young Hopi Indian girl named Talasi. Her name comes from corn tassel flowers that surround her pueblo home in Arizona. Tassels are tall, slender flowers clustered at the very top of corn. Corn, in its many forms, provides basic nourishment for Hopi People.

Wonderfully written, this children’s book clearly reflects the author’s fascination with the Hopi people and their history. Hopi means “peaceful person” or “civilized person” in the Hopi language and Ellen S. Cromwell evokes a compelling portrait of the Hopi Indians and how they truly are a peaceful people. “The richness of Talasi’s Indian culture will expand the horizons of any child who reads this book,” said illustrator Desiree Sterbini. “I researched to make sure every illustration was authentic to the Hopi culture. I wanted the themes of love, family, and friendship to be something each child could relate to. The images are personal as they are from actual pictures of my mother-in-law and daughter.”

With the author and illustrator using personal, real life experiences and pictures to draw from, the book exemplifies what it means to value all cultures that make up the world we live in and that no matter what children can solve problems with love and courage. “A lot of the imagery is from personal experiences. I grew up as an immigrant in the Bronx and remember the neighborhood coming together to build this treehouse for all the kids to play in. It was amazing and we felt like we were on top of the world as kids up there,” said author Ellen S. Cromwell. “Those childhood experiences and what I learned from the Hopi tribe and its culture helped me create Talasi and her world.”

Not only does this picture book have multicultural overtones, but parents and educators will find the author used sight words and repetition to make this the perfect book for classrooms and bookshelves.

“Reading a book together as a family or in the classroom is one simple yet very special tradition,” said Halo Publisher Lisa M. Umina. “Readers of all ages will find this picture book is heartwarming and helps keep you and your children connected through the upcoming holiday season.”

Toddler’s Imagination Makes Delightful Story for Families to Share

Recently released by Halo Publishing International, Lai-Lai Meets Chub-Chub is a book about a preschool-age girl who struggles to find the “perfect” name for her new puppy.

Houston, TX (USA), April 08, 2013 — The naming of a family pet is the theme of Dr. Aaron Chokan’s delightful new children’s book, Lai-Lai Meets Chub-Chub. Recently released by Halo Publishing International, Lai-Lai Meets Chub-Chub is a book about a preschool-age girl who struggles to find the “perfect” name for her new puppy.

Chokan said he mirrored the story of his 3-year-old daughter Calais’ naming of the family’s new mini golden doodle puppy. “It’s a story told through a toddler’s imagination,” explained the author.

“Lai-Lai spends her day outside learning how nature can truly give her ideas for a name,” he said. “She also asks for listener participation by asking the reading audience for some help.” “And the little girl in the story is completely delighted when she finally comes up with the name Chub-Chub.”

“Families will enjoy reading this sweet story together,” said Halo International Publisher Lisa Umina. “We know how important it is for parents to read with their children and Lai Lai Meets Chub Chub is a wonderful book for them to share.”

Chokan said he has a second book in the works featuring Lai-Lai and her adventures with her new pet. Other members of his large family will be story characters as well. “I’m bringing the whole family in,” he said.

The author is a Northeast Ohio foot and ankle specialist who has been practicing since 2004. The son of a builder, Chokan grew up with his two sisters in Westlake, Ohio, and is a graduate of St. Ignatius High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the College of Wooster and then studied at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. Now the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, Chokan is chairman of the school’s alumni association. The author is owner and founder of Ohio Foot and Ankle Center with 4 locations in Northeast Ohio.

Chokan met his wife, Michelle, while they were both working at Hillcrest Hospital, part of the Cleveland Clinic medical system. They now have five children, Hunter, Reece, Finlay, Calais and Lucia, ranging in age from six weeks to seven years old; and a dog, Paisley. The family lives in Hudson, Ohio.

In fact, her award-winning children’s book, Milo and the Green Wagon, used stories drawn from her childhood experiences helping people in need, and this attribute remains evident today at Halo – where charity is a cornerstone of the company.

TIP SHEET:
Tami Hegge, Author: “I would highly recommend [Halo] as your Publisher. Lisa Umina is very professional and listens to your every need. I connected with her immediately and with a name like “Halo,” I had a good feeling from the very beginning! Lisa came thru on all of my wishes and she personally guided and educated me thru the whole process. I am a novice and put my trust in her. I have already received my first royalty check and am very satisfied. I have already started another children’s book and would definitely work with [Halo] again! It has been a perfect experience!”

Jennifer Fura, Author of Scotty’s Way: “I can barely see through my tears. I have to keep reminding myself I did this. At this moment, with the book in my hand, I have tears of joy. I had almost forgotten what that was. Every single thing I have been through in the last 4 and 1/2 years was worth it to have this feeling I have right now. A 2 year old boy, about 15 minutes from our home, just lost his leg from a lawnmower accident. As I hand the book over to his parents, I will be overcome with sadness, but, pride. I did something that just might make their journey a little easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Jungle Bob Tuma, Author of BobTails: “I have always had the dream of writing a book about animals. Halo Publishing made that dream come true. With the help and guidance of Lisa Umina, I was able to share my “wild” world with children of all ages. This has been a wonderful, exciting, and educational experience for me…”

A Taste of Vietnam for Gourmet Lovers

The new Luxury Travel trip features a 12-day itinerary of Vietnam’s most popular spots, with many special opportunities to discover and savor the surprisingly varied tastes of this fascinating land.

Hanoi, Vietnam, July 12, 2012 – The new Luxury Travel trip (www.luxurytravelvietnam.com ) features a 12-day itinerary of Vietnam’s most popular spots, with many special opportunities to discover and savor the surprisingly varied tastes of this fascinating land.

Along with exploring new cultures, one of the great joys of travel is the discovery of new cuisine. Those unfamiliar with Vietnamese food are in for a treat, as the national cuisine is flavorful, colorful and extremely healthy.

North: Northern Vietnam has long been influenced by its proximity to China. As the only part of the country that experiences four seasons, many dishes are only available in season. Overall, the food tends to be milder and lighter than that found in the rest of Vietnam.

Central: The pundits claim that central cuisine is the most culturally authentic food in the country. Heavily influenced by the Imperial court cuisine of Hue, the food is generally spicy and well seasoned.

South: Southern cuisine is the most varied of the three. Rich in vegetables, rice and seafood, it has incorporated French, Cambodian and Thai influences into a style that is distinctively its own. It is more heavily seasoned and tropical, spicier and at times sweeter than northern food.

Luxury Travel’s “A Taste of Vietnam” trip is designed for the traveler with limited time and an unlimited appetite for a culinary adventure.

The trip features a 12-day itinerary of Vietnam’s most popular spots, with many special opportunities to discover and savor the surprisingly varied tastes of this fascinating land.

This culinary odyssey will take travelers from tasting the dishes of the North to the delicacies of Hue, down to the unsurpassed bounty of the Mekong Delta with its cinematic abundance of fruits and vegetables.

Gourmet lovers will experience the tangy flavor of cha ca (charcoal grilled fish), sample Vietnam’s signature pho, become acquainted with infinite types of noodles and rice, and try nuoc mam (Vietnamese fish sauce).

“Our ultimate goal is to give our clients a food and wine experience that will last them a lifetime,” said Hung Nguyen, sales and marketing manager of Luxury Travel Company.
