An almost unheard of search engine called DuckDuckGo is gaining traction and recognition. Will they overthrow Google? Probably not, but they are gaining users anyway. Anonymity is the name of the game with DuckDuckGo’s thinking. They don’t believe in keeping up with what IP address (YOU) searched for what term and what time it was searched for.
This DuckDuckGo review attempts to explain why it’s gaining popularity. In simple terms the reason is because it does not keep up with users’ searching habits.
Here’s what they say:
“We are a search engine with:
. Way more instant answers.
. Way less spam and clutter.
. Lots and lots of goodies.
. Real privacy.”
When the most popular search engine, Google, was in its beginning many of the test group sat in front of the simple white screen wating for the rest of “it” to load. It was many other search engines because it was clean from all the other clutter. DuckDuckGo is set up very much the same. No ads, news of the day, stock market ticker, or anything else found on the front page of many other search engine websites.
Where did DuckDuckGo come from?
Gabriel Weinberg started DuckDuckGo with a core belief. That is keeping users’ information private. A lot of other search engines track what is searched, what’s clicked on, how long someone stays on websites, IP address (unique to an user’s computer), User Agent (the user’s web browser), and time stamp when something is searched.
Needless to say many people don’t know this goes on in the background and those that do are not particularly joyous about it. DuckDuckGo doesn’t store any of that information.
To get the message out DuckDuckGo took out a billboard with a very simple message. On a plain white background the sign simply read…”Google Tracks You. We Don’t. DuckDuckGo.com”
They do a wonderful job of illistrating how Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other major search engines track movement. As indicated by DuckDuckGo the other search engines filter results derived from former clicks.
Many people know Google shows advertisements in direct correlation with what is searched but don’t recognize they filtered the main search results. Again, DuckDuckGo does a great job of explaining how it works. These details are found on the bottom left corner of the main site.
The Use of Clever Marketing
In the world of search engines, how does a company who has just arrived in the industry against the powerhouse that is Google?
Let’s look at the details, Google is the #1 website in the world and the most popular search engine. They get the most traffic which also means they get the most income from advertising. So the question remains, how is a start up search engine supposed to find it’s place and compete? DuckDuckGo rebelled against the usual practices of many search engines helping internet users escape the Search Engine Filter Bubble.
It seems this new search engine is gaining popularity by bringing to light the truths behind what other search engines do with search results and offering a true alternative to Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
It will be interesting to see how DuckDuckGo performs and developes as it escalates in popularity and stature. Will it be a force to be reckoned with? Only time will tell.
Be sure to have a look at DuckDuckGo .
