Yamgo Announces Landmark Mobile TV Deal as Sony SAB becomes the 100th channel on the Yamgo service

Mobile TV network Yamgo has launched its 100th channel after securing a worldwide distribution deal with media giant Sony.

The launch of Sony SAB, a hugely successful Indian focused entertainment channel with a strong youth following, gives the strong Yamgo Asian content portfolio another boost.

As mobile TV usage explodes the Yamgo viewing figures in India, Pakistan and other Asian countries continues to see rapid growth.

Yamgo CEO Ian Mullins said: “We’re constantly adding the best quality content to our channel line-up and hitting the 100th channel landmark with such a prestigious and popular partner is great news.

“Since the creation of Yamgo in 2006 the mobile industry has grown at an incredible rate. We’re giving people access to TV on mobile devices – in many countries this is a breakthrough that is seeing TV go mainstream.

“What we are doing at Yamgo is offering the type of channels that people are used to watching in the home, but with advanced compression technologies that make them easily watchable on a wide range of mobile devices, from feature phones to smartphones.

“We believe that the future is all about allowing people to watch what they want when they want and mobile TV enables that. Advertisers understand this and there is already a huge amount of interest from the advertising industry about what we are doing on mobile.”

With over 35 million views per month, over a million smartphone app downloads and 100 channels across 6 different genres Yamgo is now one of the world’s leading mobile TV providers.

Yamgo’s technology platform has been designed to maximise the compatibility across networks and phones. It does this by dynamically adapting video streams to address the different needs of thousands of mobile devices and networks from 2.5G, 3G and 4G to Wi-Fi and broadband. Yamgo delivers the experiences of live television, primetime programming and video-on-demand services on all major device platforms including Java, Android, iPhone, iPad, Symbian and more.

The company now has distribution deals with some of the major TV broadcasters and rights owners, including Sony, France24, Trace Sports and Fashion TV.

Tony Lit the Vice President Head of UK & Europe for Sony SAB said, “We are excited to announce the launch of Sony SAB on Yamgo that will see our content reach new audiences and allow our viewers even more ways to access the award winning family entertainment channel.”

Juniper forecasts that due to the increase in smartphone usage, the number of people streaming TV to their smartphones will reach 240 million by 2014. An article recently published by Mobile Marketer also reported: “The number of mobile users will grow from the 174 million in 2011 to 265 million by 2016.”

The same article from Mobile Marketer also states that: “68 percent of mobile advertising spending in the U.S. was for ads that appeared on mobile phones, 23 percent on media tablets and e-readers and 9 percent on other mobile devices such as the iPod touch.”

It’s clear that it isn’t just the way people watch TV that’s changing. Several major brands are adapting their marketing campaigns to capture the attention of their increasingly mobile audience. Businesses can advertise on mobile for a fraction of the cost they would have to pay to place the same ad on television. Mobile advertising can also provide the same audience levels as traditional television but allow interactive ads, making the advertising effectiveness more measurable.

In 2011 the IDC (International Data Corporation) forecasted that worldwide business-to-consumer m-commerce would increase from the $80 billion in 2011 to $554.7 billion in 2016, reflecting an annual compound growth rate of 47 percent. One of the main factors for driving this demand is through video advertising on mobile TV, which allows brands to play interactive ads. This has already proved to be 27 times more successful for click-through rates than static ads.

The important challenge for brands concerning mobile TV is finding premium, quality content to play their ads alongside. Yamgo is the market leader in having the best channels for genres such as Bollywood, Music and Fashion. Yamgo currently offers seven genres in total, including Fashion, Bollywood and Music, there are also channels containing News, Sport, Bikini and Entertainment. A Lifestyle category is currently being contracted.

As a mobile TV distribution network Yamgo TV allows viewers to watch live and linear channels through Internet enabled mobile devices and desktop computers. Yamgo TV is available on all leading mobile platforms and devices including iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch via the app store), Android (phones and tablets via the Google Play store), Nokia, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung and HP webOS.

Indian women turn to their smartphone for entertainment as mobile television growth accelerates.

A series of recent studies by various parties have found that women in India are consistently turning towards their mobile phone as a source of entertainment.

A recent study published by Google and IPSOS reported that Indian consumers are ditching their televisions for smartphones faster than any of the 40 countries surveyed. In fact 49% of the respondents from India stated they would rather give up their Television than their smartphone.

Mobile TV company Yamgo recently ran a research campaign in a bid to discover more about their audience. The 4 week study spanned several platforms including social media and focus groups and Yamgo’s websites and applications.

Ian Mullins the CEO and founder of Yamgo TV said, “Our audience is growing globally on a daily basis and it’s important to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our viewers. We want to ensure that we are consistently providing our viewers with content that they are going to love, websites and apps that they find easy to use and a quick streaming service. The best way for us to ensure we are meeting these criteria is by asking Yamgo viewers directly what they want from their mobile viewing experience”.

Findings from the research has both supported the existing knowledge of Yamgo and provided useful insight into emerging trends in the industry.

The research showed that Yamgo TV has a strong following of Indian women aged 18-24 with a particular interest in fashion. Our research showed that Indian women in the 18-24 age bracket were markedly more engaged with Yamgo’s extensive line up of fashion content. Fashion focused adverts received a far higher click-through rate than similar adverts for different genres. The Indian females in this age bracket also were also far more socially engaged than their older counterparts and proved to be far more likely to act on an advertisement that featured a social recommendation from a friend (e.g a Facebook Like) than a paid for advertisement. The research found that Bollywood is the second most popular television genre amongst Yamgo’s Indian female audience and also found that News is the most popular genre for women aged 35-44, two times more popular than any other genre in this age range.

With research by Nielson placing the estimated number of smartphone users in India at 27 million these recent studies by Google, IPSOS and Yamgo could have major implications for the future of mobile television and advertising in India.

The take-up of television in India has been rapid and it has become clear that the role of television is changing the lives of Indian women, particularly in rural areas. The world of TV opens windows for viewers to see what life is like in other cultures which demonstrates an alternative lifestyle in comparison to their own. A study by Jensen (Brown University) and Oster (University of Chicago) held profound insight into the impacts television has on Indian women.

The study followed women in 2,700 households over 180 villages. The authors found that the arrival of cable TV and shows likes “Days of our Lives” quickly impacted the beliefs and opinions of rural Indian women. Results from the study found that after the delivery of cable TV, girls between the age of 8 and 10 were 8% more likely to go to school and the number of births by women under the age of 35 fell by more than half.

The findings of the study show that TV has ability to strongly influence the viewer- however it is apparent that viewers are becoming more opinionated about the content they want to see on their screens.

Sahara One is one of India’s top entertainment conglomerates which recently signed a deal with Yamgo to broadcast on the mobile network. A representative for Sahara One said about the strength of female viewers, “As an entertainment channel we have a strong female following. What’s important to learn about female fans is that they are far more likely to discuss events that have occurred on TV with their friends and family than male viewers. Our female followers are highly engaged and social which means that Sahara One is talked about frequently amongst our viewers, therefore reinforcing the Sahara One brand”.

The research shows a large percentage of Indian consumers have a preference for their smart phone over traditional television which will develop an increase in demand for mobile television content. A large percentage of Indian females now have instant access to influential programmes and entertainment which may result in further developments of the Indian culture, particularly as mobile devices become more readily available to rural area of India.

As a mobile TV company with an international audience, Yamgo consistently researches and interacts with viewers in order to deliver premium content that their audience will favour. Yamgo TV is available to watch for free from www.yamgo.com or to watch direct from a mobile device www.yamgo.mobi.

The Yamgo application is free to download from all leading app stores including iTunes and Google Play.

Yamgo set to unleash superfast TV as 4G services roll out across the UK

Leading mobile TV provider Yamgo has unveiled an updated technology platform ready to deliver high quality TV streams to mobile phones on Britain’s new superfast 4G networks.

The Yamgo mobile TV service will capitalise on the superior speed of 4G to deliver sharper looking video and improved audio, bringing UK consumers in line with the enhanced mobile TV experience that’s become so popular in the USA, South Korea and Scandinavia.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) EE becomes the first UK Operator to launch 4G LTE services, with consumers in 16 cities due to be connected by Christmas this year.

Yamgo makes it easy to watch over 100 channels of TV on a mobile or tablet using phone based applications or mobile web pages to launch the service.

4G will make data services like mobile TV and music mainstream due to the ultra-fast connectivity, making it quicker than most home broadband connections.

Yamgo’s proprietary technology platform enables it to dynamically adapt video streams, maximising compatibility across mobile network operators and devices. Although Yamgo services work well around the world on slower 2.5G services, it’s the lightning speed of 4G that will make watching TV on mobiles mainstream.

Yamgo CEO Ian Mullins stated, “The launch of 4G is the tipping point for services like Yamgo. When all the networks have 4G rolled out across the country, it will quickly become second nature for people to watch TV on their mobile.

“The ability to use digital entertainment services like Yamgo has been available for years, but I think we all agree that with the new smartphones, 4G and the proliferation of Wi-Fi, we’re now going to see the market explode.

“We’ve seen the effect 4G has had on the use of data services in the US and I expect it to be exactly the same here. We’re pleased for all the viewers of Yamgo TV who will get a faster, better service over 4G LTE and with the benefit of our new platform.”

The news from Yamgo comes on the back of a major announcement last week that four of the UK’s largest mobile service providers have joined forces to accelerate the timetable of the 4G rollout across the country. In conjunction with communication regulator Ofcom and the UK government, Vodafone, Everything Everywhere (EE), Three and O2 have come together to form ‘Digital Mobile Spectrum Ltd (DMS).

DMS will be focused on co-ordinating operations for the roll-out of 4G on the 800MHz spectrum while ensuring that the UK’s digital television and Freeview services are not affected.

DMS will be funded by successful bidders in the upcoming 4G spectrum auction. The auction will offer a welcome boost to the UK economy, with expectations suggesting income of £2-4bn will be generated.

EE is due to launch Britain’s first 4G service tomorrow (October 30th) and expects to have reached one third of the UK’s population by the end of 2012.

The 4G services will initially be in four cities – London, Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham – with 12 others to follow: Belfast, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Southampton.

All the UK mobile phone operators are expected to launch 4G services early next year.
