Network in Moderation at Holiday Social Events

Networking at holiday social events varies from general business networking. Learn the ins and outs from master networker Lillian D. Bjorseth, who gives you practical advice on how to look and act polished and professional.

Lisle, IL, December 02, 2011 – “It’s okay to network at holiday social events so long as you do it in moderation and eat and drink in the same manner,” said Lillian D. Bjorseth, business networking advisor, coach, author and president of Duoforce Enterprises, Inc.

“Whether it is office parties, neighborhood open houses, country club dances or professional organizational luncheons and dinners, keep the conversation about the event, the holidays and the other person,” Bjorseth said. “It’s even more unforgiveable to focus on yourself at social affairs than at business events.”

She advises that you also look and act professional because others are still deciding 10 things about you within 10 seconds of seeing you. Furthermore, they will carry that impression with them into the boardroom or onto the telephone when they again speak with you or about you.

“Don’t overfill your “little” plate. Snacking ahead of time can curb your appetite. Keep cold drinks out of your right hand (the one you use to shake hands!). Ice and condensation will likely make it feel cold and moist. Holding the drink in your left hand is a far better solution than wrapping a napkin around the glass. If seating is available, sit down for a few minutes to eat. When you rise again, sans foods, your hands will be free. And don’t forget to wash them before you start shaking again,” Bjorseth says.

Her other professional advice includes:

* Don’t tell off-color jokes or use crude language just because the atmosphere is more relaxed. Such behavior offends many people, including coworkers, their spouses, partners and families who can carry a lot of weight.

* Dress properly for the occasion. Find out ahead of time the appropriate dress for men and women. And, women, don’t show excessive cleavage if you want to be taken seriously in the office or want to use the event to lay the groundwork for future employment.

* Remember the behavioral basics. Exhibit good posture. Give a firm handshake. Maintain eye contact at least 85 percent of the time. Keep your gestures understated, especially in a crowded room where expansive gestures can lead to touching someone else or even spilling your food or beverage … or theirs!

Additionally, Bjorseth suggests you don’t make the head honcho your only target or feel as if you need your token minutes or two with him/her. Have longer and more meaningful conversations with those who are lower on the totem pole and aren’t besieged by everyone else. Top brass seldom gets involved in the day-to-day hiring, promotions and other managerial duties. Make a positive impression on everyone you meet so you will be memorable long after the event is over.

Carry your business cards,” Bjorseth says. “Women, keep at least a small supply in your holiday bag. If attending with a male partner, have him keep some extras in his inside suit pocket. It’s so much more professional than writing your vital information on a cocktail napkin. Hand them out only if asked.”

Bjorseth shares three final suggestions:

• Don’t press people on the spot. If you want more information, a referral or an appointment, get the person’s business card and ask if you may email or call him/her later. Networking is planting seeds. A holiday event is not the place to sell. Follow up during normal business hours.

• Don’t be the last to leave. Unless you are close personal friends with the hosts, don’t be the last to leave the neighborhood open house. Similarly, unless you have volunteered for clean-up duty, don’t be the straggler at company or organizational functions. It’s like pushing back from the table when you are still hungry: leave while you’re still making a positive impression.

• Send holiday cards. Bypass the pre-printed, sterile ones. Take the time to sign your name and write a short personal note. As appropriate, send to your clients, prospective employers and, particularly, to those people at any level who are vital links in your networking chain.

AAA calls for responsible investment in response to Occupy movement

Alternative investment and impact investing advocacy group, Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), has announced its support for more social enterprise investment as called for by London-based expert, Luke Fletcher.

Boston, MA, December 01, 2011 – Alternative investment and impact investing advocacy group, Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), has announced its support for more social enterprise investment as called for by London-based expert, Luke Fletcher.

Fletcher, of the Social Finance Group, claims that investing in social enterprise initiatives could be the most workable solution to the current unrest about the financial markets. AAA supports this claim and is looking to raise awareness of both the global impact of socially responsible investment, and the potential returns they can offer.

Writing for SocialEnterpriseLive.com, Mr Fletcher asserted that those involved in demonstrations against fat-cat wages and the general model on which global business operates, through the Occupy protests, should be focusing their efforts on promoting social enterprise as an alternative.

AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, added, “We are keen to remind people that there is an alternative to stocks and shares and that it is possible to make a real statement against capitalism through sensible, ethical investments in social and environmental projects.”

Mr Fletcher explained, “Social impact investment is projected by JP Morgan to be at least a $400 million-$1 trillion industry over the next decade.” He added that the City of London needs to realise this potential and leverage its strength to move to the forefront of this emerging asset class.

AAA promotes impact investing as a means of making strong returns while steering cash injections in a direction that is positive for developing countries, vulnerable communities and the environment. Some ethical alternatives have already caught on in the mainstream, such as forestry investments through firms like Greenwood Management, which manages sustainable forestry plantations in Brazil. However, more needs to be done, claims AAA.

AAA joins Luke Fletcher and many others involved in social enterprise, in hoping that the Occupy movement triggers a change in attitude, among investors in general, towards more responsible and fair investment choices.

DNA Brands Reports Record Revenue in Third Quarter of 2011

During the third quarter ended September 30, 2011, DNA recorded record revenues of $467,337 compared to $165,151 in revenue during the third quarter ended September 30, 2010. For the nine month period ended September 30, 2011, DNA recorded revenue of $1,155,415, a 22.9% improvement over the same period in 2010.

Loss per share for the quarter ended September 30, 2011 was ($0.02) compared to ($0.08) during the third quarter ended September 30, 2010. For the nine month period ended September 30, 2011 the loss per share was $(0.08) compared to ($0.25) in the same period in the prior year.

Paia, HI, November 29, 2011 – In this time of political grandstanding, it is refreshing to hear about someone who quite literally, “walks the talk.” Recently, author/photographer Brandon Wilson and his 68-year-old French friend completed an eleven-country walk for peace from France to Jerusalem. In doing so, they founded the “Templar Trail.”

This true chronicle interweaves adventure, intrigue, wit and social commentary into an entertaining Chaucerian tale about overcoming odds and discovering the secret to creating peace. The courageous journey from France to Jerusalem traced one marched a millennium ago by those who became the first Knights Templar. Like those men, the modern pilgrims’ walk was filled with extreme highs and lows. The men trekked 2620-miles (the equivalent to crossing the U.S.) across difficult terrains in extreme climates, from the freezing Black Forest to Turkey’s broiling plains. There was the mental test of hiking 30-50 km., a virtual marathon, each day. However, the pair frequently met “angels” whose random acts of kindness bolstered their resolve. But when war erupted between Israel and Lebanon, violence mounted in Damascus, and Hemorrhagic Fever raged in Turkey, everything became uncertain – except for their steadfast and perhaps life-threatening resolve.

Their trek attracted the attention of national television networks and major newspapers along the route, allowing them to spread an impassioned message of peace to millions of Christians, Muslims and Jews alike throughout eleven countries. About the Author

Brandon Wilson is no novice to these types of historic journeys. This world adventurer and perpetual pilgrim has walked five of the world’s most important pilgrimage trails: the Camino de Santiago and Via de la Plata across Spain, the St. Olav’s Way across Norway, and he was the first American to walk the 1150-mile Via Francigena from England to Rome. His fascination began when he and his wife Cheryl became the first western couple to walk a traditional Buddhist pilgrim trail from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1991. Still going strong, he and his wife recently were among the first to hike the challenging Via Alpina the length of the Alps for 1200 miles from Trieste to Monte Carlo.

Website to Offer insurance to Cover Bail for Occupy Protesters

Houston, TX, November 24, 2011 – Today marks a week since the Occupy “Day of Action” in New York, which left more than 240 people arrested, five protesters charged with felony assault, and seven officers and 10 protesters injured, but the developers of a new website say they’ve made it possible for all Occupy protesters to get insurance to cover their bail if they are arrested in the future.

“This insurance will cost only $99 for the year and cover bail for misdemeanor charges up to $1,000,”said Aaron Fraser, developer and spokesman for the new websites, Occupyfannie.org and occupyFreddie.org.

Fraser added that the insurance would also cover property damage up to $500.

“The insurance only applies to those participating in an active Occupy demonstration,” said Fraser. “The insurance also covers those in other Occupy movements in other countries.”

The insurance offering could prove to have perfect timing as word of the planned eviction surfaced a day after the Occupy LA group rejected what they described as a city offer to give them indoor space, farmland and other concessions as inducements for the hundreds of demonstrators to leave City Hall on their own.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s office said in a statement it had “informed members of Occupy LA that City Hall park will be closed at some point next week for rehabilitation.”

If Occupy protesters don’t evacuate when the park closes, arrests will be made.

“I am offering Occupy protesters an opportunity to purchase protesters insurance,” Fraser explained. “Any protester that is arrested and has this insurance can be bailed out by our organization.”

He added that Occupy protesters can purchase additional insurance to protect their personal property as well.

“They must have the insurance for at least 30 days, and collection of property insurance must accompany a police report,” Fraser noted, before adding that in addition to the insurance, those who want to help defray the cost of feeding Occupy protesters can help by purchasing T shirts from the Occupyfannie.org or OccupyFreddie.org website.

The OccupyFreddie.org and OccupyFannie.org websites, Fraser said, were recently launched to raise awareness and call citizens to non-violent action through the vehicle of public protests against Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

The protest, funded and sponsored by Gotham Dating Partners Inc., will be held Nov. 28 at the Freddie Mac building in the 8200 block of Jones Branch Drive, McLean, Va. and Nov. 29 at the Fannie Mae headquarters, located in the 3900 block of Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C.

“The public can go to OccupyFreddie.org and OccupyFannie.org website to buy shirts to participate in the movement, Fraser said, before adding, “I want to connect with the young and old who are tired of corporate greed and want to show it by publically protesting.”

Supporters of the Occupy movement, Fraser explained, can now purchase insurance and also provide support to help cover other costs in the event Occupy protesters find themselves in a situation similar to the “Day of Action,” which was an attempt to delay the opening of the New York Stock Exchange with demonstrations on the subways, a sit-in in the roadway at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge and unscheduled clashes with the police in Zuccotti Park.

“It’s clear that arrests will occur, but now Occupy protesters can be covered in the event they are arrested,” Fraser said.
