FRA: Irish Forest deal shows overseas Timberland Investment Market is ‘Healthy’

The news that an Australian investor has bought a large piece of forested land in Ireland as an investment has been cited by FRA as evidence that the forestry investment industry is still proving strong.

Bainbridge Island, WA, Septemeber 06, 2012 – The news that an Australian investor has bought a large piece of forested land in Ireland as an investment has been cited by Forestry Research Associates (FRA) as evidence that the forestry investment industry is still proving strong.

“The news that the Australian investor has spent nearly EUR4 million on the Irish forest land shows that investors are willing to invest overseas when they identify a decent forestry investment option that could earn them strong returns in the medium or long term,” stated FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins.

The 921 acres of forest was planted over a period of 30 years by Irish Forestry Services Asset Managers. It has now been bought from the asset managers by the Australian investor. The portfolio of forest land is located in six Irish counties in 20 locations, including in Clare, Mayo and Leitrim.

The sale to the Australian businessman was secured after Irish Forestry Services marketed the portfolio abroad to ensure they stimulated as much interest in the asset as possible. DTZ Sherry FitzGerald’s Fintan Tierney handled the sale and explained to The Irish Times: “We received over 165 enquiries from Irish and overseas investors, some of them for parts of the portfolio and others for the entire investment.”

FRA said that the sale also demonstrated how investors in plantations can see returns sooner than they may expect. Hundreds of people who invested in The Third Forestry Investment Plan saw returns of 46.6 per cent, tax free, as a result of the sale.

FRA is a keen advocate of forestry investment through firms like Greenwood Management and promotes this as a green option for those who want to invest in a tangible asset class that is lower risk than investing in equities or bonds. Forestry returns have typically outperformed the equity markets and inflation over the past few decades.

AAA praises Forestry investment Advocate for Supporting Alternatives

A recent article in The South African has attracted praise from (AAA for promoting the benefits of investing in timber.

Boston, MA, September 06, 2012 – A recent article in The South African has attracted praise from Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) for promoting the benefits of investing in timber.

The article was based around an interview with Graham Rowan of Wealth Invest, who asserted that money really does grow on trees if you invest in forestry and timberland in the right way. He said that timber was his favorite ‘green‘ investment and added that there are a few tips to acknowledge before taking the plunge, but that healthy returns are easy to come by.

Firstly, Mr Rowan points out that timber investment has beaten inflation over the past 100 years by an average of 3.3 per cent. AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, said that this is a particularly attractive trend during these times of high inflation and low interest rates of savings. He added that, depending on who you invest with, those interested in buying up forestry land can do so for a lot less money than in the past. For example, investments of less than $15,000 are needed to invest in the sustainable plantations run by Greenwood Management in Brazil and Canada.

Another factor to think about when considering forestry investment is the rate of growth for the species in your plantations or forestry project. The faster the growth, the quicker the returns and the less long-term the investment is. For those who want faster returns, investing in Acacia or eucalyptus is a good idea, for example. He also points out the location of the forests makes a difference on the speed at which they grow. He states: “UK forestry grows so slowly that you may find you are investing to benefit your grandchildren!”

Mr Rowan also recommends that investors look closely at any small print and check where they stand if they would like to exit the project early. Overall, though, he recommends forestry as a green investment option.

Bryant & Stratton College’s Syracuse North Campus Now Offering Community-Based Residential Living

Facility Features On-Site Library, Computer Lab, 24-Hour Fitness Center, Heated Swimming Pool, Movie Theatre and More

Syracuse, New York, September 05, 2012 – Bryant & Stratton College’s Syracuse North Campus announced today that it is making student housing available starting this semester. The new residences are located at 8602 Dell Center Drive in Liverpool, only 1/8 of a mile from the College’s academic buildings, and are part of the Rivers Pointe Apartments living community. Students will be able to choose either a two or three-bedroom unit and all apartments are fully furnished with utilities included (cable, heat, electric and water) and feature an attached patio, dishwasher, brand new appliances and a private washer and dryer. Students can designate their own roommates or be matched with other Bryant & Stratton College students. The College is still enrolling for the fall semester and there are available spots for students interested in living in the new housing facility.

For students already enrolled, a housing orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5 with a welcome luncheon for students, parents and residence hall staff.

Center for Productive Longevity Announces Speakers for Baby Boomers Entrepreneurship Meeting

Nearly Full Meeting Features Academic and Business Leaders and Interactive Breakout Sessions

Boulder, CO, September 05, 2012 – The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL), which serves as the bridge between people 55 and older and opportunities that enable them to continue in productive activities, has just increased its maximum number of participants from 125 to 150 because the topic has such fundamental importance, with unemployment high and economic growth low for the foreseeable future.

“New-business creation is the backbone of the U.S. economy, as well as the engine for increased employment and economic growth,” said William Zinke, President of CPL.

The meeting at Babson College on September 14, titled “Spotlight on Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Baby Boomers,” has an outstanding line-up of speakers:

* Leonard Schlesinger, the 12th President of Babson College since July 1, 2008; previously in executive positions with Limited Brands from 1999-2007, most recently as Vice Chairman & CEO; Executive Vice President & COO at An Bon Pain from 1985-1988; previously at Harvard Business School for 20 years, where he served as the George Fisher Baker, Jr. Professor of Business Administration.

* Ralph Sorenson, President Emeritus of Babson College (1974 to 1981) and founder of its Center for Entrepreneurship in 1978; Professor Emeritus and former Dean, University of Colorado Business School (1992-present); former Chairman & CEO, Barry Wright Company (1981-1989); Director of Whole Foods Market, Inc. since 1994.

* Douglas Rauch, a founder of Trader Joe’s and with the company for 31 years, primarily as President & CEO of a nationally-acclaimed retail success story; senior fellow at Harvard in the school’s Advanced Leadership Initiative; executive partner at AptaCapital; chair of the WBUR Board of Overseers and works with a number of entrepreneurial startups.

* David Egan, business founder and turnaround strategist. He co-founded THINQ Learning Solutions, an e-learning management software company that achieved a peak market valuation of $250 million and was later successfully sold. He then co-founded LanguageCorps, a specialty seminar company that trains, certifies, places and supports English teachers in Asian and Central American schools. He has also spent 20 years starting and turning around publications in the communications and computer markets for major companies like McGraw-Hill and Ziff Davis Publishing.

* Irene Costello, co-founder of Effie’s Homemade, which has created and marketed since 2007 a line of all-natural rustic baked goods. Effie’s Homemade products are made in the USA and sold in specialty stores nationwide.

There will be two breakout sessions focused on how to become an entrepreneur, with topics ranging from the risks and rewards to developing strategies for recognizing potential business opportunities to developing a business plan.

With 30 years added to longevity during the 20th century and the average age of retirement at 62, new-business creation is an important path to consider for older people who either want or need to continue working. It provides an opportunity for people with experience, expertise, seasoned judgment, proven performance and some accumulated wisdom to be their own boss and “march to their own drummer.”

Additional meetings will be held at Northwestern University/Kellogg School of Management in Chicago on October 11, and the University of Denver-University College on November 15.
