Oxford Expression Technologies Launch Innovative Virus Like Particle Expression Vector

Oxford Expression Technologies (OET), the award-winning specialist provider of baculovirus-based protein expression solutions, announce the launch of flashBACPRIME, the newest edition to the flashBAC range.

Oxford, UK, November 27, 2012 – Oxford Expression Technologies (OET), the award-winning specialist provider of baculovirus-based protein expression solutions, announce the launch of flashBACPRIME, the newest edition to the flashBAC range. The new vector is specifically designed to provide increased virus like particle yield and recovery, and also benefits from the traditional ease of use associated with the renowned flashBAC one step baculovirus expression system.

The new vector offers an innovative solution to one of the challenges of VLP production by providing scientists with enhanced recovery and yield. The performance improvement is achieved by inducing cell lysis at a very late stage of infection in Trichoplusia ni (T.ni) derived cell lines. The flashBACPRIME expression vector also offers flexibility for users, although designed for use in virus like particle production, it can also be used for cytoplasmic protein expression and production.

Passing comment, James Bernard, the CEO at Oxford Expression Technologies said, “We are pleased to announce the launch of flashBACPRIME, it represents a significant improvement in performance and we are delighted to offer these benefits to our customers” he continued, “Yield and recovery are an inherent concern with VLP production and our new technology provides scientists with a solution that addresses these concerns, we are also pleased to add another innovation to our highly successful flashBAC range.”

Oxford Expression Technologies invites anyone with an interest in baculovirus protein expression and virus like particle production to visit their website – http://oetltd.com/

Front Range Airport Receives Full Funding for Spaceport License

Front Range Airport is ready to launch its bid for spaceport licensing with full funding commitments from strategic partners.

Denver (Watkins), CO, November 26, 2012 – Front Range Airport is ready to launch its bid for spaceport licensing with full funding commitments from strategic partners.

“The  Colorado  Department  of  Transportation’s  Division  of  Aeronautics  approved  a  grant  request  for $275,000, which is the last commitment needed to match a $200,000 grant received Sept. 25, 2012, from the  Federal  Aviation  Administration’s  Office  of  Commercial  Space  Transportation,” said Dennis Heap, executive director for Front Range Airport.

Aeronautics funding comes on the heels of commitments from Denver International Airport (DIA) for $50,000, the city of Aurora for $25,000, I-70 Regional Economic Advancement Partnership for $5,000, the Town of Bennett for $5,000 and Adams County for $300,000. “The commitments are more than just money,”  said Heap. “They are an expression of partnership for the concept of Spaceport Colorado.”

Studies  show  that  tomorrow’s  leaders in commercial space transportation will be facilities that are part of a world-wide network of suborbital flight transportation. Front  Range  Airport’s  unique  position  as  a  spaceport location is due to its rural location and excess capacity, while being convenient to DIA and easily accessible by the greater Denver metro area. Key to the success of Spaceport Colorado is DIA, the 10th busiest airport in the world, which will be the feed and distribution system for future cargo and passenger space flight.

“The city of Aurora has supported Front Range Airportt since its inception,”  said  Mayor  Steve  Hogan. “We  have  partnered with the airport to construct the existing water system and transferred approval to the airport for its waste water system. We maintain the primary roads to and from the airport and funded completion of 56th Avenue between DIA and Front Range Airport in collaboration with Adams County and TransPort developers.”

“Funding  assistance  from  the  local  economic  development  organization,  I-70 REAP, and the Town of Bennett is  very  meaningful,” said Heap.  “The organization has been a long-time supporter and views the airport as the economic engine for the I-70  Corridor.”

Adams County Commissioner Alice J. Nichol, chairman of the Front Range Airport Authority is pleased with the support for Spaceport Colorado. “Adams County has invested over $21 million in infrastructure and assistance for Front Range, making it the 3rd largest contributor after the FAA and the private  sector,”  said Nichol. “I believe Spaceport Colorado will become a major economic generator for Adams County and the state of Colorado.

Next steps are the issuance of an RFP for spaceport consultants and final selection before the end of the year. The spaceport consultants and Front Range Airport will then begin the six-month process of conducting technical, financial and feasibility studies; developing a detailed business plan; identifying the market and facilities analysis for Spaceport Colorado; as well as conducting an environmental assessment and risk analysis for the spaceport and flight corridors. This data will be used to prepare the spaceport license application. The goal is to receive a license for a horizontal launch and recovery for spaceport before the end of 2013.

“Front Range is the last general aviation (GA) airport constructed in Colorado and is one of the largest land mass GA airports in the United States with just under 4,000 acres of land, surrounded by a 6,000- acre, non-residential, master planned industrial complex,” said Heap.  “Tens of thousands of acres of dry land farming extend in all directions from the airport.”

Front Range Airport constructed the tallest general aviation air traffic control tower in the United States, and has 20 acres of shovel-ready sites with sufficient utilities to support a 10-15 year build out for aerospace facilities.

AAA welcomes Allianz move towards Alternative Investments

The news that Europe’s largest insurer is increasing its investment in alternatives has been welcomed by AAA.

Boston, MA, November 23, 2012 – The news that Europe’s largest insurer is increasing its investment in alternatives has been welcomed by Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).

Allianz claims that its traditional investments are delivering very low yields at the moment, and it is hoping that doubling its exposure to alternatives will help to offset the effects of this.

Currently, Allianz’s investment portfolio totals some $400.8 billion, which, according to AAA, are invested almost entirely in fixed income securities, which have suffered as a result of the financial crisis, with yields falling significantly. “This has happened to a large number of traditional asset classes since the economic crisis,” explained Anthony Johnson, AAA’s analysis partner.

He added, “It’s no longer just individuals that are looking to invest more in alternatives, but institutional investors are also increasing their exposure to alternatives to try to reduce the risk in their portfolios.”

Maximilian Zimmerer, a board member at Allianz spoke to the Financial Times about the issue. He said that Allianz will continue to invest in private equity but will also aim to increase its exposure to infrastructure and real estate property loans, for example.

The move from investing in real estate directly, to investing in property loans is the result of some predictions from Allianz that this area will see the most growth in the coming years. An article on the investment strategy from Invezz.com, explained, ‘A lengthy period of low returns has affected insurers’ ability to generate profits on their conventional investment portfolios while meeting promises to owners of products such as life assurance policies, which often guarantee fixed returns.’

AAA is an alternatives investment advocacy group that supports ethical and non-traditional asset classes, such as forestry and impact investing. “Investing in sustainable plantations though firms like Greenwood Management can produce better returns that most traditional investment,” claimed Mr Johnson.

Greater Good Academy Recognizes Socially and Environmentally Responsible Denver Start-Ups

November 26th Event Celebrates 6th Graduating Class with Business Plan Showcase

Denver, CO, November 21, 2012 – Socially and environmentally minded entrepreneurs will gather to demonstrate how they plan to build Denver businesses focused on community and sustainability at the Greater Good Academy’s (GGA) showcase on November 26, 2012. The event, held from 5:30-7:45 p.m. at Mi Casa Resource Center (360 Acoma St., Denver, CO 80223), will showcase these emerging small business ventures and feature a discussion on business ethics and social responsibility.

The goal of the GGA program is to give low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs the training and financial support they need to develop ideas into profitable business plans. During an eight-week class, students develop “triple bottom line” business plans – plans that have community, sustainability and profit at their core.

Four of the Academy’s most recent graduates will present their business plans at the showcase. The event will feature: Tim Brauhn, Denver Seitan Company, (a line of delicious, healthy ‘fake meat’ vegan foods); Francine Lomiller & Kim Roth, Schoolyard Crop, (reconnecting students to nature and agriculture through a hands-on edible garden and curriculum program); Mike Pachan, SolCharged, (a veggie oil powered,  vending truck using solar technology to provide power for mobile devices); and Destiny Faithe, Colorado Pure Essentials, (a line of handcrafted natural soaps and personal care products).

The Showcase will also include Michael Ditchfield, owner of Jing, and Tammy Cunningham will present the ‘Cunningham Award’ to one Greater Good Academy (GGA) entrepreneurs in food-related businesses who exemplify the philanthropic contributions and communitarian ideals of Noel Cunningham, String’s Restaurant.

During the GGA, each entrepreneur completes a business plan that defines the company’s mission, operations, marketing, pricing and related growth strategies. The plan also describes how the business will integrate environmental and social elements into its overall business strategy.

“Businesses that care for the environment and quality of life in their community are more likely to become successful,” said Richard Eidlin, Founder and CEO of The Progress Group. “The Greater Good Academy program helps entrepreneurs implement sustainable and triple bottom line business thinking and practices to become more profitable.”

GGA also provides its students with meaningful business relationships by connecting the entrepreneurs with key people in the economic development, angel capital and socially responsible business world. Through these networking opportunities, the GGA program aims to equip its participants with the tools they need to take action and contribute to the Denver community.

“This event gives attendees the chance not only to meet these entrepreneurs, but also to learn more about the importance of business ethics and the benefits of socially responsible practices,” Eidlin said.

The GGA showcase is open to the general public. Registration is $15 for private companies, nonprofits, government and $10 for Greater Good Academy Alumni and students. Supporting organizations for the event include Accion, the Denver Office of Economic Development, the Colorado Enterprise Fund, Colorado Lending Source, Johnson and Wales University, Mi Casa Resource Center, Accion, Mile High Business Alliance and UMB Bank.

Center For Productive Longevity Wraps Up Successful Series of Baby Boomer Entrepreneurship Meetings

Nationwide Meetings Attracted More than 400 People to Learn More about Creating New Businesses

Boulder, CO, November 20, 2012 – The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL), which serves as the bridge between people 55 and older and opportunities that enable them to continue in productive activities, recently wrapped up its last meeting in the “Spotlight on Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Baby Boomers” series. These meetings attracted more than 400 participants 50 and older to the four meetings in Kansas City, Mo., Boston, Chicago and Denver.

There are 78 million Baby Boomers (one-quarter of the total U.S. population) reaching the traditional retirement age of 65 at the rate of 4.2 million each year from 2011 through 2029. With unemployment high and economic growth low for the foreseeable future, new-business creation is a bright spot on a gloomy employment horizon for older people. A survey sponsored by AARP in 2011 indicated that 80 percent of the Baby Boomers surveyed intend to continue working after leaving their regular career jobs. This series of meetings is on the leading edge in encouraging Baby Boomers to consider the benefits and opportunities of new-business creation as they consider how to remain productively engaged.

This interest in entrepreneurship as a career after retirement is reflected in national research as well, with increasingly more people 55 and older creating their own businesses than people 20-34. In fact, according to Kauffman Foundation research, the relative percentage of entrepreneurs has increased by almost 7 percent for people 55-64 from 1996-2011, the largest increase among all age groups. By contrast, the percentage dropped about 5 percent for people 20-44.

“This is what built America! Individuality, capitalism, inventiveness, and the freedom to create your own business,” stated Karen Rose, a participant in the Denver meeting. “This meeting reignited passion in so many of us, along with providing educational avenues to turn passion into success.”

Tom Backhus, another participant in the Denver meeting, said, “The event has given me confidence in moving forward and ideas on the importance of writing my business concept.”

Each meeting had presentations by successful, highly visible entrepreneurs such as Jerry Kelly, CEO and Co-Founder, Silpada Designs, Doug Rauch, former President and CEO, Trader Joe’s, Larry Levy, Founder and Chairman of Levy Restaurants, and Alan Hall, Founder and Chairman, MarketStar.

Participants also attended interactive breakout sessions on topics relating to new-business creation and how to become an entrepreneur, including: risks and rewards, strategies for identifying and selecting potential business opportunities, developing a business plan or business concept statement, and exploring funding support.

Written evaluations from all of the meetings indicated that participants benefited and were even inspired by their experience. Almost all participants reported that it increased their understanding of the benefits and opportunities provided by entrepreneurship, and 74 percent stated they were now more likely to create a new business as a result of the meetings.

Quality Assurance Campaign from Rivet Software Looks to Elevate Financial Reporting

Program Launches With Webinar Addressing The ‘End Of Limited Liability’

Denver, CO, November 20, 2012 – Rivet Software, the premier provider of standards-based business reporting and analytics software, today announced the firm is launching a Quality Assurance Campaign designed to help financial reporting professionals prepare for important changes in the regulatory landscape.

With the last wave of limited liability expiring within a few months, the Rivet campaign is intended to provide SEC reporting professionals fresh insight into the most common errors found in SEC filings and offer guidance on communicating with their investors and submitting correct filings to the Commission.

As a part of the campaign, the firm will be offering a webinar later this month titled ‘The End of Limited Liability – Are you ready?’ The free webinar, which will be hosted by Phil Mennona, Rivet’s XBRL Compliance Manager, will feature special guest Campbell Pryde, CEO of XBRL US. The program will speak to the three things reporting professionals need to know to ensure the quality of their XBRL data.

According to Rivet, since the XBRL mandate went in effect 3 years ago, the external financial reporting industry has seen close to 9,000 public companies file over 50,000 XBRL submissions. Mike Rohan, Rivet’s CEO and Co-founder, says a review of those filings uncovered over 760,000 data quality issues that will result in inaccuracies.

“With the last wave of limited liability expiring in just nine months, financial reporting professionals owe it to themselves, their shareholders, and their management to perform thorough, repeatable data quality checks on their XBRL financials every time,” says Mr. Rohan. “The stakes will doubtlessly raise.”

The ‘End of Limited Liability – Are you ready?’ webinar is scheduled for November 28th, from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM ET. For more information, or to register for the webinar, reporting professionals are encouraged to visit www.rivetsoftware.com/the-end-of-limited-liability-are-you-ready.com.
