DAREN IS NO APRIL FOOL!

Forty six-year-old Daren Johnson is set to run a marathon a day throughout April in a bid to raise £100,000 for two charities close to his heart.

Daren, from Bromley, will run more than 850 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End in his Give a Bit Back challenge to generate funds for two charities very special to him – the Retired Greyhound Trust and Help for Heroes.

Greyhound owner Daren, whose dog Kinda Ready won the Greyhound Derby in 2009, has spent his life involved in the racing industry. He had always pledged to raise funds and give something back to the Retired Greyhound Trust, which supports the racing industry to find loving new homes for the dogs at the end of their careers.

The construction firm boss also chose to support Help for Heroes after former employee Rob Long was blinded in a bomb explosion in Afghanistan and was given crucial support by the charity.

Daren said: “I did a couple of marathons in the 1990s and until a few years ago I played a bit of football too. This is going be very, very tough, but if people are going to donate their hard earned money I can’t have it easy!

”The Retired Greyhound Trust and its hundreds of volunteers around the country work tirelessly to find good homes for greyhounds at the end of their careers. It has always been so important for us to find loving homes for our dogs when they retire, so we are delighted to be able to support the charity in this challenge.

“The Trust has more than 700 dogs in kennels across the country who need homes, so they have their work cut out for them. I want to try to make their fantastic work a little bit easier by raising funds that allows them to continue to look after the dogs while they are searching for new owners.

“I decided to support Help for Heroes after seeing the amazing support that Rob received from the charity as he came to terms with a life-changing injury. Rob lost both of his eyes and was standing next to his best friend who was killed in the blast. You hear it all of the time on the news, but when it happens to someone you know you see the impact it has on people’s lives. That was the incident that sealed it for me ” the run was on and I was determined to raise lots of money,” he said.

Daren, who has looked after his own greyhounds after their racing careers are over, is passionate about the dogs. He said: “If anyone is considering a pet then I would urge them to consider a greyhound. We have had years of joy from our greyhounds. When they retired from the track they like nothing better than to loll around and get fussed. Most love children and other animals and, despite their reputation as formidable athletes, most greyhounds only need two short walks a day, so they are very easy dogs to look after.”

To help Daren to reach his £100,000 target for the Retired Greyhound Trust and Help for Heroes or to follow his progress, log on to his website to find out more: www.giveabitback.net.

Daren starts his Give a Bit Back challenge on April 2 from John O’Groats.

The charity has housed more than 50,000 dogs since it was set up in 1975. Around 9,000 greyhounds retire from racing each year.

The Retired Greyhound Trust has 72 branches across the country made up of volunteers who are dedicated to finding homes for the dogs in their areas. Many have websites, showing pictures of the dogs that need homes.

International Quilt Festival Comes to Cincinnati This Spring

It’s one of the most popular hobbies in the country, one with a warm, storied past and an even more blazing future on the cutting edge of contemporary art. And beginning this year, Midwesterners in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana will get to see what quilting is all about at the debut of the spring edition of International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati!

“We are very excited to bring the show to the Queen City,” says Festival Founder and Director Karey Bresenhan, who also oversees other editions of Festival in Long Beach and Houston — the latter of which annually draws more than 60,000 attendees! “The area has always been rich with quilters and fabric artists, and a lot of them have never been to a show of this size before!”

International Quilt Festival/Cincinnati will take place April 8-10 at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio . Classes will begin April 7, and Preview Night will be held the same day from 5-9 p.m.

Quilting is big business! As reported in the most recent Quilting in America™ survey, there are more than 21 million quilters in the U.S. who spend nearly $3.6 billion annually on their passion. According to USA Today, that’s more than is laid out by hunting/gun enthusiasts, fishermen, and golfers combined.

But you don’t have to be a quilter—or even know how to thread a needle—to enjoy so much of what’s available at the show.

There will be almost 400 shopping booths offering antique and contemporary quilts and fabrics, patterns, notions, and books for the quilting and sewing enthusiast. Festival visitors will also find everything from antiques, crafts, and home décor items to clothing, jewelry, bags, and other accessories.

On display will be over 500 incredible quilts and other works of fabric art in 18 different special exhibits. These textile artworks run the gamut from antique time-honored patterns to cutting-edge contemporary fabric artistry.

Among this year’s exhibit highlights are “America Collects Quilts®: The Works of Susan Shie,” which feature the sometimes controversial artist’s unique works; “Baltimore Album Review II: Baltimore ‘s Daughters—Friends Stitch Past to Future,” an inspiring exhibit of quilts created in the Baltimore Album Style; and “Celebrate Spring! 2011,” a Judged Show in which the theme is the season of renewal.

This year, Festival’s Quiltmaking Academy will be host to more than 60 classes, luncheons, and special events with a faculty including some of the quilting world’s most well-known and respected teachers.

“There are always new ideas and techniques to be learned in the classroom, but you can also learn a lot just walking through the exhibits area and admiring the incredible artistry represented in the quilts on display,” Bresenhan adds. “Quilting has come a long way, and continues to evolve. If you haven’t seen the face of quilting lately, I’d encourage you to visit the show and see just what this remarkable artform is today!”

For more information about International Quilt Festival, please call 713-781-6864 or visit www.quilts.com. Show hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Fri. & Sat. April 8 & 9, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sun., April 10. Preview Night is 5-9 p.m. on Thurs., April 7, and admission allows one free additional day. Tickets are $10 regular daily, $8 students/seniors 65+, and $25 for a Full Show Pass. The End of the Middle Class and the Emergence of a Planetary Society of Control

NEW YORK, NY – MARCH 12, 2011 – Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta was born in 1957 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Beginning in childhood, the architect, urban planner, and musician traveled, as his father was an important inventor and industrial businessman. After 1987, he lived between New York City, Switzerland, Portugal, and Brazil. In 2003, inspired by the last thoughts of the economist John Kenneth Galbraith, he started an unexpected journey: to discover the common elements of social transformation on a planetary scale. Would it be possible? It seems so, according to his book, “Low Power Society: Continuous Hyperconsumption and the End of the Middle Class in a Hyperurban Planet,” now launched at Amazon.com.

What would exist in common between Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States? “We penetrated a worldwide scale of interactions that made it possible to identify common patterns,” Pimenta said. And how could those discoveries impact the daily lives of people living in large cities in the United States or even in the countryside of Europe? “In many aspects,” replies the author, “everything seems to follow a coherent pattern, changing standards of education, references of personal development, like the future of some professions, strategies for money investment, and so on. Everything is quickly changing. If you are thinking of your future or the future of your family, surely this book will be of interest.”

In the book “Low Power Society,” Emanuel Pimenta describes an astonishing scenario that includes technological tools of social control, new forms of world conflicts, different kinds of statistical data, and the establishment of a new bureaucratic aristocracy.

“The book is not pessimistic. I never make any judgment of value,” he said. “It simply is powerful research conducted around the world. It is a book that can help people to better understand what is really happening on our planet. Many times I’ve met people perplexed with the fast transformations of our societies. Many times people ask me where one could find a good place to live. This book helps people understand what is happening.”

Corrado Bianchi Porro, journalist chief of the famous Swiss newspaper “Giornale del Popolo,” from the canton of Ticino, wrote the book’s introduction. The preface was written by the legendary American journalist Jon Rappoport, from California.

Emanuel Pimenta is member of the New York Academy of Sciences, of the Council of Architects and Engineers of Brazil, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“Low Power Society” can be purchased at http://www.asa-art.com/books.html, at http://www.amazon.com, or can be ordered in any bookshop all over the world.

The book has two different editions, in English and in Portuguese.

Online Dating Site Inspired by Women Launches in Australia

Women go “man shopping” and men vie for their attention on MrRight.com.au, the first Australian dating site inspired by women. On MrRight.com.au, women add the men they like to their shopping cart to open a communication channel – it’s the only way that men can get in touch. Then, they can send one another messages for as long as they like. If the conversation doesn’t go their way, women can remove men from their cart just as easily to close the channel.

The concept behind MrRight.com.au also works well for men. It allows them to take a step back and let women choose them. Guys no longer need to spend hours browsing through thousands of profiles for the perfect match. They also save time and money sending messages that may never be read. All they need to do is create a profile and keep it online for as long as they’re available and looking.

MrRight.com.au was inspired by women and the stories of their sometimes unpleasant online dating experiences. On traditional dating sites, it only takes a few men behaving badly to spoil everyone’s fun. Internet forums are rife with stories of women receiving aggressive or sexually charged messages from contacts on online dating sites. Likewise, they can also be put off when their inbox is filled with “Pokes”, “Likes” or other short messages.

Matt Right, founder of MrRight.com.au comments: “MrRight.com.au changes online dating as we’ve known since the early 90s. For the first time, women date online on their terms and men compete for their attention. The response we’ve seen from men and women of all ages has been overwhelming”.

MrRight also maintains an online dating blog where it publishes insights into how people use its service.

FREE CLOSING COST GRANTS FOR MILITARY HOME BUYERS AS MILITARY HOUSING ASSISTANCE FUND AND MILITARY CONNECTION TEAM TO HELP MILITARY FAMILIES BECOME HOMEOWNERS

Denver, CO – March 2, 2011 – The Military Housing Assistance Fund and Military Connection today announced an alliance focused on increasing homeownership for military members, civilian military employees, and qualified veterans. While roughly two thirds of all American families own their homes, it is a sad fact that barely a quarter of military families are homeowners. As the shared mission of each of the non-profits is to benefit military members and veterans, positively impacting their lives and their finances, joining forces to increase awareness of both benefit programs makes perfect sense.

Military Housing Assistance Fund (MHAF or USMHAF) exists for the sole purpose of assisting military members and qualified veterans to better afford the purchase of a home. This is accomplished by channeling donations from private individuals, government entities, and foundation grants, to individual home buyers from any branch of the military; Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves. The funds are a true gift and need never be re-paid.

The Closing Cost Gift Program is not to be confused with seller funded Down Payment Assistance programs such as those that were once offered by Nehemiah grants, Ameridream, Genesis or others that were prohibited by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The free gifts funds are for closing costs or moving expenses that may not be covered by seller concessions in a particular purchase transaction. Military home buyers are not restricted to VA Mortgage Loans. FHA loans can also be used, as well as USDA Rural Housing Loans, which is an alternate way to achieve 100% financing in eligible rural areas.

For Debbie Gregory, CEO of Military Connection, the alliance represents a way to further benefit the thousands of members of the Military Connection family. “MilitaryConnection.com is proud to announce our alliance with MHAF” said Gregory.”We are always looking for ways to honor and assist our men and women in uniform, past and present, as well as their families. There isn’t any better way to show our appreciation for their many sacrifices than by helping them to become homeowners.” Likewise, Errol Anderson, Managing Director of Military Housing Assistance Fund, is pleased with the new alliance. “Our mission is to help more of our military realize the American dream of home ownership” said Anderson. ”That’s the least we can do for them considering what they do for us”.

Both Anderson and Gregory emphasized that a key benefit to the Closing Cost Gift Program is that there is no cost to apply, no cost if approved, and no costs after the fact. There are no costs to the military member or veteran whatsoever.

Founded in 1999, Military Connection is a woman-owned business located in Simi Valley, California, assisting military member, veterans, and military charities, with a special emphasis on education resources, job placement, and career assistance for qualified veterans. A virtual job fair, directory of employers and live job postings are prominently featured on the site, as well as tools such as military pay charts, COLA calculators, education assistance, and free or heavily discounted resources exclusively for military members and veterans. Military Connection Charity Connection supports military charities including Toys for Tots, Operation Homefront, the Red Cross, American Breast Cancer Foundation, and many others. Site: http://MilitaryConnection.com

Founded in 2004 by military veteran and Founding Member William Dugger, MHAF has from day one sought to help expand housing opportunities for military families. MHAF is one of the very few non-profits in this country that gives 100% of the donation it receives to the intended beneficiary in the form of a gift never has to be repaid. MHAF is well on its’ way to accomplishing their organizational goal of helping at least 1200 military families for Calendar Year 2011. Site: http://USMHAF.org

March College Scholarship Deadlines Can Easily Be Forgotten

With the number of tasks involved in applying for colleges in the fall, one thing that can fall through the cracks is attending to the college scholarship application dates. According to Dee J Cohen, licensed social worker , “College seniors are dealing with writing admission essays, checking out schools and adjusting to leaving their friends. It is easy to forget the deadlines for scholarships due to being so overwhelmed.” Scholarships are a necessity for many to be able to attend school in the fall but can get eclipsed by the enormous number of tasks involved in preparing for college as well as dealing with senior year homework and sports. At her blog, Social Work Programs, many unknown scholarship awards are listed. For each school or each field of expertise, there are limitations and deadlines that have to be met by aspiring scholars. Below are some of the universities and special schools that have March Scholarship Deadlines.

The NASA College Scholarship Fund is an aid for students who are dependent of current or retired employees of NASA. The required average grade of any student who wishes to apply here is 2.5 on a scale of 4.0 and he should be interested in a college career that is related to engineering or science. The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited private, public, or parochial high school in the United States. The applicant must submit all the needed requirements on or before March 31. Only five scholarships will be given in the amount of $2,000 each.

Don’t forget the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship. The Jackie Robinson Foundation is giving minority students the chance to pursue a four-year course in college with the help of their $7,500 per year aid. This scholarship is given mostly to students who show leadership potential and have financial need. An applicant must be dedicated to rendering community service, plans to attend an accredited university in the United States, and be able to present evidences that he is really in need of a scholarship grant. The deadline of application for the scholarship is on March 15.

One more program that belongs to the deadline date is the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is funded by the GM Foundation and aims to help students who have financial difficulties and possess leadership skills in the community and in school. The scholarship will grant 100 scholars $25,000 per year and 1,000 scholars with $2,000 per year. This is open to first time college students who plan to take up courses involving math, business administration, finance, science, technology, marketing, and engineering. Slots will be awarded according to the student’s career goals, academic achievement, work experience and more. The requirements of applicants should be submitted on or before March 31. Though there are many things to handle before college, paying attention to scholarship deadlines needs to be a high priority.

There are also a number of scholarships for students interested in health as well as social work scholarships for those that wish to work with others in their community. At SocialWorkPrograms.org a variety of scholarships are discussed including those for left handed students and awards for those seeking male nursing scholarships .
