Childhood Cancer Survivor Shows the Beauty in Nature and Animals in New Children’s Book

First-time author, Sarah Sauer, wants to teach kids to love and respect wildlife.

Houston, TX (USA), March 08, 2013 — Sarah Sauer’s passion for animals and a keen eye and talent for photography inspired her to create a picture book to inspire young children to love nature and wildlife animals as much as she does.

Spring 2013, What Do You See When You Look At Me?, will be released. It’s story, and that of its author is a remarkable one.

The book, and its audience, makes sense for Sarah, a 19-year-old early childhood education major from Corydon, Indiana, who spends her free time teaching preschoolers and tutoring foster children in Louisville, Kentucky, 30 minutes away from her home.

What’s more astounding is Sarah’s own story. She is a 12-year survivor of pediatric brain cancer, diagnosed at age seven. After surgery and months of chemotherapy and radiation, she had to re-learn how to walk and use her hands. She will always stand at 4-foot-8 and, because of slowed reflexes, will never be able to drive a car.

But Sarah hasn’t let these challenges hold her back, and her new book is proof of that.

“I want this book to help little kids see the love and the good in animals,” says Sarah. “I want them to see how special and beautiful animals are and that everyone, really, is special in their own way.”

Sarah took the photos in the book as part of a photography class at her high school for which she won the top award at her school and received a gift certificate from her teacher who saw special promise in her photography skills. Then, Sarah enlisted her preschoolers’ input, showing the children the photos and asking them to describe what they saw. Many of their responses made it in to the book.

Sarah’s mother sent the book idea to Lisa Umina of Halo Publishing. Umina saw immediate potential in the book and in Sarah’s story. “I am both honored and humbled to have this opportunity to witness Sarah’s unbelievable courage as a cancer survivor and her ability to celebrate life through her talents as an author and photographer.

Sarah plans to donate several of her books to the WHAS Crusade for Children campaign, which helps children with special needs. Part of the proceeds from the book will also be donated to groups that have supported Sarah during her recovery from cancer, including St. Joseph’s Children’s Home and Development Center, where she currently volunteers.

About Sarah Sauer — Sarah is a childhood brain cancer survivor and a devoted animal lover. Her love or animals is something she drew on for strength throughout her illness. Sarah is studying early childhood education and hopes to share her love and knowledge of animals to promote and develop an appreciation of wildlife in young children. She currently lives in Corydon, Ind. with her family and her horses, dogs, llamas, donkey and cats.

Psychedelic Rock Band Cosmic Punch To Release Debut CD “Clay Pit Road” On April 16th

Alternative Psychedelic rockers Cosmic Punch will release Clay Pit Road, their debut CD for Sunset Records on April 16.

New York, NY, USA (March 08, 2013) — On Clay Pit Road, you can hear thick, colorful bass lines that synchronize with a heavy yet melodic guitar sound with some great harmonies creating a loud sound. Produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Juan “Punchy” Gonzalez in the Mango, Florida area, the rest of CD (Drums, etc.) was recorded at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in London, England. Featuring Ryan Michalski on vocals, coupled with Juan Gonzalez, they make up Cosmic Punch, quintessential psychedelia rock music for the modern era. The full length nine (9) song CD entitled Clay Pit Road, is now being set for an April 16, 2013 release date with Sunset (Records).

Cosmic Punch’s enticing fusion of genres has been called “neo-psychedelia” and the band’s abstract reach with some heavy rock influences and an natural grooves to drift towards modern day psychedelia with its accessible lyrics on every song, it is a mind-expanding sound throughout the entire CD. The duo grew up listening classic rock, surf rock, grunge rock, alternative rock and anything with psychedelic melodies! The CD has something for all music fans with its hints of grunge, much like Tripping Daisy’s sound back in that early 90s era. And then add to it some heavy guitars, incredible harmonies, with a surf rock vibe and you get what is a big sounding psych band with some unique touches in every song, that should keep the band around for many albums and for a long music career.

World-Renowned Vocal Ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock Adds Something Different – A Jazz Trio! – On New Two-CD Live Set And Upcoming Special Shows Celebrating Musical Influences

February 26th Release on Appleseed Recordings, “A Tribute – Live! Jazz at Lincoln Center,” and Tour Dates Spotlight Quintet’s Inspirations and Versatility

Hollywood, CA, February 26, 2013 – Nearing its fourth decade, the internationally acclaimed, award-winning female African-American a cappella group Sweet Honey In The Rock was ready to follow its adventurous spirit and undertake a new challenge – to honor some of the seminal songs that first inspired its unique blend of folk, blues, jazz, gospel and ethnic music in a concert presentation utilizing an instrumental backing trio for the first time. Upping the ante, the singers decided to perform this special program at New York’s prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center venue and to record their two-night appearance there in front of surprised and delighted audiences. Talk about working without a net!

In the opening moments of Sweet Honey In The Rock’s new 2-CD set, “A Tribute – Live! Jazz at Lincoln Center,” well-timed for February 26th release – concluding Black History Month and preceding Women’s History Month in March – group member Ysaye Barnwell recites a roll-call of some of the great female African-American vocalists whose songs helped shape the group and comprise much of “Tribute’s” repertoire, including Abbey Lincoln, Odetta, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Carmen McRae, Bessie Smith, and Sarah Vaughan.

The songs on this recording are drawn from those two shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in April 2011. They were subsequently performed on several additional dates, and will be featured in at least five upcoming “Tribute” shows in February and March 2013. Adorned with new arrangements by Sweet Honey’s members, there are jazz standards such as “Love Me or Leave Me,” “Wild is the Wind,” and “Tell Me More and More and Then Some,” gospel/civil rights anthems melded into a “Freedom Suite,” Afro-centric songs (the Sixties hit song “Pata Pata,” “Sabumoya,” “Shuku Shuku,” and the closing “N’diarabi/Africa is Where My Heart Lies”), show tunes, blues, and a salsa-flavored original, “Let There Be Peace.”

Sweet Honey In The Rock’s distinctive swirl of a cappella vocals, encompassing waves of imaginative ensemble harmonies and occasional solo showcases, is heard unaccompanied, aside from the quintet’s hand percussion, on about half of the songs. Interwoven throughout the presentation are the understated instrumental contributions of the trio nicknamed “the Honey Men” – Stacey Wade (musical director/piano/keyboards), Parker McAllister (bass), Jovol Bell (drums, percussion) – who augment Sweet Honey’s exhilarating, soulful voices and confident, genre-crossing dexterity.

Founded in 1973 by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon at the (Washington) D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock’s line-up currently includes returning original members Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson (Dr. Reagon retired from the group in 2004) and “long-timers” Ysaye Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, and Aisha Kahlil, as well as on-stage sign language interpreter Shirley Childress. The group has toured from Australia to Zimbabwe, performed in the White House at the request of President and First Lady Obama, accrued numerous honors (including a Grammy and several Grammy nominations , most recently for its first CD on Appleseed, 2007’s “Experience…101”), and established itself as an inspiring, empowering musical force worldwide.

Sweet Honey’s involvement in various social justice projects makes the group an ideal member of the independent Appleseed Recordings roster, which includes significant artist/activists Pete Seeger, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and South Africa’s Johnny Clegg, among others.

Upcoming “Tribute” tour dates:
2/28/13 Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, PA
3/1/13 McCarter Theater, Princeton, NJ
3/2/13 New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark, NJ
3/5/13 B.B. King’s, New York City

Founded in 1997 by activist attorney Jim Musselman, Appleseed Recordings is an independent, idealistic and internationally distributed record label devoted to releasing socially conscious contemporary, folk and roots music by a wide array of established and lesser-known musicians. Sweet Honey In The Rock is part of a roster that includes such politically active musicians as Pete Seeger, Buffy Sainte-Marie and South Africa’s Johnny Clegg, as well as seasoned, creatively evergreen “heritage” artists Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, Donovan, Jesse Winchester, David Bromberg, Jonathan Edwards, and Al Stewart, among others. The company’s approach has attracted many high-profile guest artists, including Bruce Springsteen, who has recorded six tracks for the label and was inspired to create his “Seeger Sessions” CD and tours after working on the first of Appleseed’s three Pete Seeger tribute releases. Appleseed has built a catalogue of more than 100 well-respected CDs, two Grammy Awards, ten Grammy nominations, and, most importantly, has produced music that is actually helping to change the world.

Man Swap Enables Single Women to Exchange Bachelors

World’s First Man Swap Takes Place on March 9, 2013 in the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Rafael, CA – February 18, 2013 — Contact: Tom Andrews, 415/479-3800

Single women are invited to swap the finest bachelors they know, with whom they are NOT romantically involved (brothers, fathers, sons, co-workers, ex-husbands, etc.), Saturday, March 9, 2013, 8pm-Midnight, at the Marriott Hotel, 11950 Dublin Canyon Blvd, Pleasanton, CA. The cost is $20 at the door, which includes dancing to your favorite hits. As an incentive, each man/woman pair who RSVP receive 2-for-1 admission, $10 apiece.
