SmartTOP Convertible Top Module for Mercedes-Benz Gets Functionality Boost

The SmartTOP convertible top add-on module made by Mods4cars for the Mercedes-Benz SLK R172 allows owners to open or close the top while driving and with just a single touch of the button. One-touch operation from the original factory remote key fob is also possible. A highlight is the ability to raise the rear windows while the top is down. Las Vegas, NV (USA), August 12th, 2013 — Thanks to the aftermarket SmartTOP Convertible Top Controller offered by automotive electronics specialist Mods4cars, Mercedes-Benz SLK R172 owners can now open and close the top while driving at slow speeds or control the top from afar via the original factory key remote. Both functions gain convenient one-touch operation, making the need to hold down any switch or button a thing of the past. Mods4cars continuously works on improving their existing products, always taking customer requests into account.

In April of this year Mods4cars published an update which now allows new and existing customers of the SmartTOP product to lower the top and raise the rear windows. By factory these windows are locked in the down position as long as the convertible top is down. The SmartTOP allows owners to bring them up with simple one-touch convenience.

This new feature was fully integrated into the SmartTOP firmware. Owners can choose if they want all 4 windows to come up automatically after opening the top from the console switch or the remote. Of course it is possible to retain the default setting and only control the front windows.

Additionally a new chirp feature was integrated into the module which can be programmed to either emit a brief sound on locking, unlocking or both. “This gives our customers an audible feedback that the remote command was actually received.” explains PR-Manager Sven Tornow. “It is particularly useful in bright daylight when you can’t see the flashers or hear the clicking noise. You can simply start walking away from the car and be sure it locked correctly.” Sven Tornow continues.

As a courtesy service Mods4cars always makes such improvements accessible to all customers, even existing ones. As the HawksHead Talon systems offer the ability to switch trailers, the Yard Master can be used to setup and store data for up to 4 trailers. One large feature of the Yard Master is the ability to be aimed at any tire with a Talon Sensor attached, and the Yard Master can read the Sensor ID along with the tires pressure and temperature. This ensures the trailer tire has the correct parameters before the vehicle is released into service, or before being connected to the Talon tire pressure monitoring system.

With a user friendly interface the Yard Master can save many hours of labour and ensure vehicles have the correct operating pressures thus saving money for the operator.

Activate the console switch briefly and the top opens or closes by itself; there is no longer any need to hold the switch for the duration of the operation. Additionally it is possible to activate the top from the factory key fob remote. Here too the operation cycle completes without the need to hold any button the entire time. Each SmartTOP module also comes with a host of bonus features that make owning a convertible more fun and convenient.

Mods4cars has now added two new features to the Porsche Carrera 991 and Boxster 981 modules: If desired, the module can mute the radio when the ignition is first turned on. “Unfortunately the last used volume setting is not preserved on these systems. The radio always turns on at a factory pre-set volume when turning the ignition on, even if it was turned off or muted before.” says PR manager Sven Tornow. “This function is intended for those among our customers who would like to start driving without the radio playing.” Sven Tornow concludes.

Additionally the user configurable settings can now be programmed in cars equipped with the multifunction steering wheel. It is now possible to change settings in the car by using key combinations or by using a laptop connected to the module’s USB port. The USB port also allows customers to update the module firmware using a Mac or Windows laptop or desktop computer. Firmware updates are available online and free of charge for the life of the product. Existing customer always get to enjoy new functionality and updates as well.

The Porsche modules offer the following bonus features: Opening and closing of the windows independently from the top, an extended mode where top operation is not interrupted by turning the ignition on or off. A “valet” switch that turns the entire module off temporarily while retaining all user settings. The kit comes with a custom designed wiring adapter and can be installed or removed easily.

The Carrera 991 wind deflector gains one-touch operation and can be programmed to automatically raise up after the top is opened.

SmartTOP for Mercedes-Benz SLK Now Allows Use of the Rear Windows with Top Down

Automotive electronics specialist Mods4cars added a long awaited feature to the SmartTOP add-on convertible top controller for Mercedes-Benz SLK R171. With the top fully open it is now possible to raise the small rear windows. The SLK R171 gains an even more elegant silhouette. Up until now it was only possible to raise the two front windows with the convertible top down.

Las Vegas, NV (USA), July 15th, 2013 — Recently Mods4cars announced the availability of a firmware update allowing use of the rear windows on Mercedes SLK R172 with the top down. Now the same function is available on the SLK R171 as well. The Vegas based outfit Mods4cars offers aftermarket electronic modules called SmartTOP which extend the functionality of the cars’ convertible top operation. The signature feature of the modules is the ability to raise and lower the top while driving at slow speeds and with one-touch convenience. They also allow top operation from the original key fob remote and each one comes with an individual set of user configurable bonus features adding to every day convenience.

“We continually work on improving our existing products and are always taking our customers‘ wishes and input into consideration.“ says PR-Manager Sven Tornow. “Raising the rear windows with the top down was one of the most requested features; it creates a more elegant appearance and improves wind protection.” Sven Tornow continues.

By factory default the two small rear windows are permanently in the down position as long as the convertible top is open. When using the key remote top open the top, the user configurable setting also applies. Choose if all windows come up or stay down. The setting can be programmed independently from the front windows, so it is possible to leave all windows down, raise only the front ones or raise all.

Mods4cars publishes at least 50 firmware updates every year, all of which are not just for new customers to enjoy. All SmartTOP modules come equipped with a standard USB port for quick and easy end user product configuration and update. Firmware updates are free of charge. “Once you purchased a SmartTOP module, you will be eligible to receive firmware updates for the entire life of the product.” Sven Tornow concludes.
