FRA Flags Up ‘Future Climate’ Tree Species Trials

An interesting research project is taking place in the UK, which could lead to some exciting plantation investment opportunities in the future, according to FRA.

Seattle, United States, March 30, 2012 — An interesting research project is taking place in the UK, which could lead to some exciting plantation investment opportunities in the future, according to Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The Forestry Commission’s Forest Research division is carrying out a series of tests to try to establish species of trees that could survive and flourish in a ‘future climate’. Project REINFFORCE, as it is being known, is being funded by the European Union, explained FRA, which supports renewable forestry and forestry investment projects all over the world.

The project is growing 30 different tree species in 37 West Atlantic regions, including three trial sites in Britain. Forest Research is also carrying out three trials in Swinley, Berkshire and Peebles.

FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, explained that the research is intended to find species that are most likely to be resilient to the challenges that may become more common in the future. For example, they are looking for species that may withstand high temperatures, a lack of water and more pests.

FRA claims that investing in these species once they have been established as the species of the future will be a good move for those looking to invest in an asset class that will see prices rise. Mr Collins explained: Sustainable forestry is undeniably an attractive investment opportunity these days, particularly in light of the volatility of the stock markets.”

FRA claims that people want to put their cash somewhere ethical and that investing in forestry research such as this project will help the human race to adapt to the changing climate. In addition, planting more trees is never a bad thing for the fight against climate change as trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere making forestry one of the most cost-effective ways to limit carbon emissions.

FRA supports a range of forestry investment schemes, including the plantation schemes run by Greenwood Management in Brazil.

FPL Helps Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami Build Homes, Strengthen Communities

“By building alongside our partner families, FPL once again demonstrates its commitment to corporate responsibility. The company’s financial generosity is only exceeded by its enthusiasm to help others,” said Mario Artecona, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami.

Juno Beach, FL (March 30, 2012) — As part of their annual “Power to Care” week, more than 70 FPL employees rolled up their sleeves to help Habitat for Humanity build new, affordable homes and revitalize a distressed community in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami.

Habitat’s Greater Miami Chapter is building 114 homes in this community and rehabilitating more than 40 others. The two-year initiative called “Liberty City Shine” is one of the most aggressive building schedules the chapter has ever attempted, said Mario Artecona, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami.

FPL‘s volunteer support arrived just in time to help drive the project forward.

“By building alongside our partner families, FPL once again demonstrates its commitment to corporate responsibility. The company’s financial generosity is only exceeded by its enthusiasm to help others,” said Habitat’s Artecona. “We are forever grateful for the support. FPL is a great partner to Habitat and continues to set the standard for corporate community engagement.”

FPL volunteers joined in to help with framing and insulation, installing of windows and doors, painting, tiling, landscaping, and other construction-related tasks – all with the ultimate goal of building quality homes for low-income families in need of a decent, affordable place to live.

One of the volunteers, Patricia Beliard, works in FPL’s Community Service department and she was actually pulling double-duty today: she was able to work alongside her fellow employees and apply her volunteer hours toward the Habitat requirement of 250 hours to qualify for her own home. “I am so grateful to be out here today with my coworkers. They are helping me achieve my dream of owning my own home for the first time in my life. I am blessed and grateful.”

This event is just one of 22 volunteer projects taking place during FPL’s Power to Care Week. Throughout the week, a volunteer group of more than 900, consisting of employees and their families, spread out across the state to help clean beaches and restore dunes, landscape nonprofit facilities, spruce up parks, beautify gardens, and more.

“Habitat is doing some terrific work here in Liberty City and FPL is so glad to be a part of it,” said Meredith Rollo, FPL Community Relations specialist. “We’re delighted to help make dreams come true for families in this community.”

Eating Disorders in Children are on the Rise; Eating Recovery Center Urges Prevention at Home

Leading Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders Treatment Program Offers 10 Tips to Help Parents Prevent Eating Disorders

Denver, CO, March 29, 2012 – Between 1999 and 2006, hospitalizations for eating disorders in children 12 and younger rose 119 percent, according to a 2010 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics. In an effort to curb the growth of anorexia, bulimia, EDNOS and binge eating disorder in this young patient population, Eating Recovery Center (www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com), an international center for eating disorders recovery, urges parents to take preventive measures at home to stop eating disorders before they start.

“While clinicians have yet to identify the absolute keys to preventing eating disorders, we do know that positive parental involvement and heightened awareness can help foster the development of healthy relationships among children, their bodies and food,” explains Ovidio Bermudez, MD, FAAP, FSAHM, FAED, CEDS, medical director of child and adolescent services at Eating Recovery Center.

Eating Recovery Center offers 10 recommendations to help parents practice eating disorders prevention at home:

1. Understand your own feelings and attitudes toward body image, body size, weight and health.

2. Model healthy attitudes and behaviors toward eating, exercise, body weight and shape and self-acceptance. Children will often mirror their parents’ thoughts and actions surrounding these issues.

3. Educate yourself about the complex nature of eating disorders. An informed parent is more aware and more likely to notice early warning signs or concerning behaviors.

4. Help your child manage stress. Reduce complexity in your child’s life to prevent or relieve anxiety and fear, which may lead to disordered eating in children who are particularly vulnerable to stress.

5. Focus on eating at ease during mealtimes. Promoting the social value of mealtimes strengthens family ties and relationships. Stressful, tense eating situations are counterproductive in efforts to develop healthy patterns around food consumption.

6. Maintain open lines of communication. Interaction is the antidote for the isolation and secretiveness that can sometimes allow a child to transition negative beliefs and attitudes into disordered eating behaviors.

7. Examine your child’s dieting and exercise habits. From a neurochemical perspective, these are not always benign activities. With the help of a medical professional, explore whether weight loss or increased exercise are healthy choices that support normal growth and development.

8. Monitor the beliefs and attitudes of your child’s friends. Children are eager to fit in and will often mimic their friends’ attitudes and behaviors—even those that are negative and potentially destructive.

9. Watch your child’s technology use. Websites and social media create a sense of “community” in which your child can learn about and compete at disordered eating behaviors. Studies have shown that both pro-eating disorder and pro-recovery online messages have risks to impressionable young minds.

10. Be aware of anxiety and depression, and seek care if your child shows signs of these conditions. The negative self image that is often associated with these conditions can lead to efforts to manage emotional insecurities via dieting and exercise.

“Even if parents are not able to prevent eating disorder-related behaviors in their children, prevention activities – such as being well informed about eating disorders and recognizing changes in attitude or behaviors that may suggest your child is at risk – are invaluable for enhancing early recognition and timely intervention,” continues Dr. Bermudez.

If your child begins showing symptoms of disordered eating, immediately seek eating disorders support from a qualified professional. Early intervention significantly improves the likelihood of recovery. FRA welcomes Prediction of Timber demand increase

A recent report in the Financial Times has provided a boost for the forestry investment industry, as it outlines how timber demand could increase by 55 per cent by 2050, according to FRA.

Bainbridge Island, WA, March 29, 2012 – A recent report in the Financial Times has provided a boost for the forestry investment industry, as it outlines how timber demand could increase by 55 per cent by 2050, according to Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The feature begins by talking about how sustainable forestry investments are “flourishing” as the commodity’s value will rise “exponentially” as demand starts to exceed supply.

The increase in the demand for timber will result from the growing population and the increasing wealth of highly populated nations such as India and China, whose demand for raw materials is on the up as they invest billions in infrastructure and housing.

FRA’s analysis partner Peter Collins said, “We welcome the report from the FT, which plainly advocates investment in sustainable forestry projects as a viable, ethical and profitable alternative to traditional investments, such as stocks and shares, which are anything but reliable in the current economic climate.”

The report explains that biological growth means that tree value rises regardless of the market conditions for timber. When combined with the rising prices that are expected to result from the increase demand, investors could see huge returns for relatively small investments.

The FT also talks about how timber has been the only asset to experience price rises during three of the four market collapses in the past century. Forestry investment has, as a result, begun to attract those who are keen to diversify their investment portfolios with a asset class that is not aligned with general economic trends

Through projects like those run by Greenwood Management in Brazil, individuals can invest as little as EUR 10,000 to buy their own section of plantation land, which will be devoted to growing non-native, sustainable trees for domestic use and export to emerging economies. Mr Collins added, “Sustainable forestry projects also help to add to the earth’s carbon sequestration capabilities and contributes to habitats and green space for people and animals to enjoy.”

FRA Welcomes New of Timber Future Price Hike

FRA has welcomed news that lumber prices in the US are rising off the back of a lack of credit in the lumber distribution industry.

Seattle, United States, March 29, 2012 — Forestry Research Associates (FRA) has welcomed news that lumber prices in the US are rising off the back of a lack of credit in the lumber distribution industry.

The research and analysis consultancy said that prices have risen 30 per cent in the past five months and that this was being prompted by distributors increasingly buying futures as a hedge in light of a lack of credit. They are finding it difficult to obtain the credit they need to buy lumber with cash, so they are resorting to futures.

Leonard Commodities analyst, Brian Leonard, told Reuters, “Distributors are having trouble buying lumber in the tight stocks environment and also they can’t get capital from banks so they’re buying futures.”

“This is great news for timber investors,” claimed FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, who added, “more and more people are looking to the timber industry as a possible asset class, due to its flexible nature and the fact is does not correlate closely with equities.”

Recent figures show interest in lumber futures is up 18 per cent since January, while spot lumber prices have also risen by 12 per cent so far this year.

Leonard explained the attraction of buying up futures: “One contract of lumber is now worth about $28,000 and you can own a futures contract for $2,100. They’re buying on margin, which is what the futures market is for.”

“I have customers who have a good 50 to 80 percent more volume in futures than they used to own,” he added.

FRA is a keen promoter of forestry investment and supports projects such as those run by firms like Greenwood Management, which runs plantations of non-native, fast-growing tress species and offer investors the chance to buy up section of plantation land. Greenwood runs its projects in Brazil and Canada and investors can start with as little as $10,000.
