Rural teens show higher incidence of prescription drug abuse

A recent survey published by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicated that teens who live in rural areas are more likely to abuse prescription drugs than their urban counterparts.

In a similar study, researchers for the Archive of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found the results to be the same.

“These two corroborating studies emphasize the need for more education in rural areas,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Some schools in rural areas lack the funds necessary for basic day-to-day prevention programs. When a school is faced with tough budgetary concerns, it is difficult to find funding for alcohol and drug prevention education. That’s why it is so vitally important that communities recognize this frightening problem and initiate prevention and education programs about the dangers of the abuse of prescription drugs, alcohol and illegal drugs. Research has shown that community based education programs coupled with parental support, are most effective in helping reduce the need for addiction treatment for adolescents and teens.”
