Fulham Releases Bluetooth Bridge to Retrofit Any 0-10v LED Luminaire for Bluetooth Mesh Wireless Control

Bluetooth Bridge First in New Line of BLE-enabled Products that Interoperate with Any Bluetooth Device or Infrastructure.

Hawthorne, CA, USA — Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, today announced availability of a new Bluetooth Bridge 0-10V LED controller, the first in a series of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) components designed to connect luminaires into a Bluetooth mesh ecosystem. The new Bluetooth Bridge can be installed in any electrical box or LED fixture to provide wireless 0-10 dimming control and monitoring.

The Bluetooth mesh standard was approved in July 2017 by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) and offers a number of advantages for wireless lighting controls. The mesh architecture is inherently reliable with built-in failover so there is no single point of failure and luminaires fitted with the Bluetooth Bridge can be added or removed without disruption. Bluetooth mesh also is secure and highly scalable so it can connect thousands of nodes, and it provides a full stack communications protocol platform so it can support the Internet of Things (IoT) devices as part of the network.

There are 32,000 corporate members of the Bluetooth SIG, and any compatible device that has been qualified by the SIG can connect to any other Bluetooth device over Bluetooth mesh. For example, luminaires equipped with Fulham’s new Bluetooth Bridge can be controlled wirelessly by other Bluetooth devices, such as the EnOcean Bluetooth energy harvesting wall switch (also available from Fulham).

“Bluetooth mesh shows great promise for the lighting industry, making it an ideal solution to add wireless lighting controls as part of new installations or LED retrofits,” said Alvaro Garcia, Senior Director, Product Management, for Fulham. “With our new Bluetooth Bridge, installers can convert any 0-10v dimmable LED luminaire into a Bluetooth mesh node. Since Bluetooth is a recognized standard, we anticipate a number of manufacturers will develop their own BLE lighting solutions, and our new Bridge products make it possible to add any LED luminaires to the mix.”

The Bluetooth Bridge is being offered in two configurations. Fulham’s Model CTBRCB02JM02 Bluetooth Bridge provides wireless on/off and 0-10V dimming controls for a transmission range up to 50 meters/160 feet at 2.4GHz. The Bluetooth Bridge has 120 to 277VAC input, as well as a sensor input for motion controls and daylight harvesting. Fulham’s Model CTBRCB03JM03-PC offers additional functionality, including power metering and color tuning. Both units are designed for indoor or outdoor use at operating temperatures from -40 degrees to 140 degrees (Fahrenheit). They both come with Fulham’s five-year warranty.

Since Bluetooth mesh supports two-way communications, the Bridge can be commissioned, controlled, and monitored using an app on any Bluetooth-enabled device, such as a tablet or smartphone. Fulham is offering a lighting commissioning app to support its BLE products. Currently available for iPhones, iPads, and other iOS-compatible devices, the app can be used to remotely program and monitor Bluetooth mesh-connected luminaires. Fulham is making the app available at no cost, although fees will be charged based on the number of luminaires being commissioned.

Fulham White Paper Describes How Digital Lighting Controls Overcomes Lack of Dimming Standards

Migration to Digital Standards Promises to Simplify Lighting Installation, Add Wireless Communications, and Extend Controls to Other Building Systems.

Hawthorne, CA, USA — Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, has released a new white paper that discusses the limitations surrounding 0-10V luminaire dimming and the benefits of adopting open digital standards to promote universal lighting compatibility. The white paper, entitled “Next-Gen Digital Dimming and the Shortcomings of 0-10V,” describes the pitfalls of trying to retrofit luminaires with incompatible dimming curves and how the emergence of new digital control and communications platforms extends lighting controls beyond simple dimming.

To date, there has been no universal standard for 0-10V dimming in LED luminaires. As a result, LED drivers from different vendors have different dimming characteristics; a 5V signal could result in a dimming profile of 50, 80, or 30 percent, depending on the manufacturer. Similarly, at 0V some LED drivers will turn power off, while others may dim from 1 or 10 percent. Non-standard dimming drivers also can overload a lighting system, tripping a circuit breaker or creating a catastrophic driver failure.

Lighting control systems such as DALI, Bluetooth mesh, and Zigbee address this lack of common dimming standards by taking advantage of embedded software support in LED components. Intelligent LED drivers can be grouped and programmed to accommodate changes and incompatibilities in dimming profiles, including making changes and upgrades automatically. In addition, polarity is not an issue with digital control systems, which makes digital luminaires easier to wire and scale.

More importantly, where most dimming protocols are unidirectional, issuing instructions with no means to verify response, digital control systems provide two-way communications to show the status and health of each switch, sensor, and luminaire. In addition, lighting manufacturers are finding that digital LED controls lend themselves to wireless connectivity, eliminating the need for extensive retrofits or additional control wiring.

“We released this white paper to show the industry what we see coming in digital lighting and open control standards,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Digital controls not only make it easier to mix and match lighting systems, but ensures faster and more trouble-free installations.”

Fulham has already demonstrated interoperability of digital control systems over a Bluetooth mesh wireless infrastructure, as well as delivering power and control to luminaires using Power over Ethernet (PoE). New programmable, digital LED components that are Bluetooth-mesh and PoE compatible will become commercially available later this year.

Fulham Transforms Lighting Controls with Introduction of Family of Connected Bluetooth Mesh Products

OEMs and Contractors Now Have Bi-directional Wireless Control Options with Family of Bluetooth Devices and Apps for Lighting Retrofits and New Installations.

Chicago, USA — At LightFair 2018 being held this week at McCormick Place, Fulham will introduce a new line of Bluetooth mesh lighting control systems and software to provide wireless luminaire control and monitoring. Fulham, a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, plans to demonstrate its new Bluetooth mesh connected LED driver, its new 0-10V to Bluetooth Bridge, and a new Bluetooth commissioning app for Apple’s iOS platform.

“The industry has been anticipating sensor-enabled standards-based, wireless lighting controls , but with Bluetooth mesh customers can get two-way lighting communications now,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Bluetooth mesh provides superior lighting control – it’s a recognized standard meaning vendors can develop interoperable products, it provides for reliable operation, the technology scales appropriately for lighting systems, and all of us carry mobile phones fully capable of being commissioning devices. Rather than promise IoT in the future, Bluetooth delivers it today.”

The first in Fulham’s new family of Bluetooth mesh LED drivers is a 40W programmable constant current driver that comes with an intelligent wireless Bluetooth dongle and provides two-way wireless communications to commission, operate, monitor, and analyze LED luminaires and lighting installations. This is the first wireless LED driver to provide bidirectional communications and since it is SIG-qualified it can be used to control third-party Bluetooth sensors and switches.

The Bluetooth driver design helps minimize driver inventory while providing maximum versatility. This is a universal 0-10v driver that can be programmed for 110 to 227V input and 250-1500mA output, and the dongle is upgradeable so installers can add Bluetooth mesh support, or it can be outfitted to accommodate other wireless control protocols in the future. The wireless Bluetooth mesh driver is ideal for mid-life luminaire retrofits, allowing customers to upgrade luminaires with energy-saving LEDs today while ensuring those luminaires can accommodate Bluetooth wireless control in the future.

Bluetooth mesh networking also supports many-to-many communications for applications such as building automation and smart cities, so using Bluetooth mesh for lighting controls makes it possible to connect hundreds or thousands of luminaire sensors. Bluetooth mesh also makes it possible to consolidate luminaires and other devices into one, centrally managed infrastructure, laying the foundation building management and even outdoor systems management using IoT (Internet of Things).

“Smart lighting systems will be built on accepted open communications standards such as Bluetooth mesh, and with the introduction of our Bluetooth mesh family of drivers we are providing a new set of adaptable controls that empower our OEM and installer customers,” said Alvaro Garcia, Product Director for LED Emergency and Advanced R&D for Fulham. “These programmable drivers are Bluetooth-ready, so customers can build in wireless control from the outset to futureproof their installations, or they can add Bluetooth communications later. Delivering these mesh-enabled drivers is a major step toward enabling open lighting controls, as well as laying the foundation for IoT infrastructure management.”

Fulham also will introduce the new 0-10V to Bluetooth Bridge that can upgrade any 0-10V luminaire to support Bluetooth mesh. Simply install the Bridge and the luminaire is added to a Bluetooth mesh infrastructure to receive control commands and send data back for performance analytics.

To support the new Bluetooth mesh family of products, Fulham is offering a lighting commissioning app. Currently available for iPhones, iPads, and other iOS-compatible devices, the app can be used to issue instructions to program any Bluetooth mesh-connected luminaire. The commissioning app will be available from the Apple Store. Fulham is making the app readily available at no cost, although fees will be charged based on the number of luminaires being controlled.

Fulham’s Bluetooth mesh products will be demonstrated at LightFair 2018 in Booth 602. For more information, visit http://www.fulham.com.

Fulham Demonstrates New Power over Ethernet Line Including Light Engine and Control System at LightFair 2018

New Vizion™ Two-way Controlled Network Power LED Engines with elitePOE Control System Software Being Introduced in Anticipation of Smart Lighting.

Chicago, USA — At LightFair 2018 being held this week at McCormick Place, Fulham will demonstrate its new elitePOE suite of Power over Ethernet (PoE) LED engines and control software. The new PoE family currently includes a customizable PoE light engine, a 22-inch PoE-powered LED engine, a programmable output PoE Driver, and new control system software for Windows. Fulham will be demonstrating its new PoE products at LightFair Booth 602.

Fulham’s Vizion PoE light engine is a programmable PoE driver that can be integrated into a variety of form factors. Designed to support-two-way digital communications, the customizable Vizion PoE Light Engine connects directly to the luminaire rather than issuing commands through a 0-10V interface. The two-way link not only can issue lighting control commands such as on/off, dimming, color tuning, and timed lighting, it also can gather data about luminaire performance, including power consumption, operating temperature, and when the luminaire is ready to fail.

The PoE light engine can be designed to fit the specific shape and functionality desired by an OEM, including multiple controls channels, white color tuning and integrated sensors. The design supports daisy chaining additional modules or luminaires up to the maximum 60W power budget of the 802.3bt compliant PoE interface.

In addition to two-way communication, PoE powers LED luminaries with up to 52W of low-voltage DC power source. This makes the luminaire more energy efficient and less costly since no AC/DC conversion drivers are required. Using PoE to power LED luminaires also simplifies installation since only one cable is needed for both power and controls.

Fulham also is showing the Vizion 22-inch linear LED engine, a self-contained PoE lighting solution with programmable dimming and color tuning. The engine has on-board PoE support for power and two-way communications for commissioning and lighting controls.

Fulham is also demonstrating a PoE Driver that is programmed to support 250-1200mA output current and 10-40 VDC. This will enable manufacturers to easily convert a wide range of luminaires to support Power over Ethernet.

To support its new PoE products, Fulham has developed the elitePoE control system software in coordination with amBX. The Windows-based application provides networked control over PoE luminaires, including issuing programming commands and monitoring. The software is available from Fulham or can be licensed for OEM branding.

“We are delighted that Fulham chose amBX software to power the elitePoE control system. Fulham’s clients will benefit from market-leading control capability for the new generation of connected lighting” Neil MacDonald, COO, amBX.

“We see lighting as the ideal infrastructure for building automation and IoT control,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Lighting is everywhere, and equipping luminaires with Ethernet connectivity not only reduces power demands but makes sensors available anywhere there are light fixtures. PoE is going to be a crucial part of next-generation smart lighting, and we want to equip our OEMs and strategic partners with the technology their customers will demand.”

Using Ethernet cable to connect luminaires will make it easier to accommodate high-bandwidth sensors such as IP cameras, as well as monitoring room temperature, occupancy, and supporting building automation functions. In addition, PoE wiring gives each LED luminaire a unique IP address, making it easier to incorporate lighting into an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, including remote management over the web.

Fulham’s PoE products will be demonstrated at LightFair 2018 in Booth 602. For more information, visit http://www.fulham.com.

Fulham Exec to Speak on Clever Lighting Strategies as Building Blocks for Building Automation at Niagara Summit

Fullham’s Russ Sharer to Discuss How Smart LED Luminaire and Sensors for Smart Lighting Deliver on the Promise of Native IoT for Niagara Framework®.

New Orleans, LA, USA — Tridum’s Niagara Framework is being recognized as the de-facto standard for building management, providing single-screen control of physical, mechanical and environmental building properties. As the demand for Internet of Things (IoT) compatibility grows as a necessary requirement for controls systems, lighting and their sensors become the ideal data gathering points for IoT analytics, AI and machine learning applications to reveal the “golden nuggets” of business intelligence. That’s the topic that Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham, Co., Inc., will be discussing in a session entitled “Clever Lighting: Leveraging the Power of Niagara to Build the Exoskeleton for IoT” at the Niagara Summit, being held here April 15-17.

In his presentation Sharer will discuss the advent of clever lighting – programmable LED light fixtures with on-board sensors – and how clever lighting can deliver more data directly and natively into the Niagara Framework and, ultimately, IoT systems. Lighting is the most prevalent electrical system in any building, and strategically placed sensors in luminaires can support new control systems based on the movement, behavior, and actions of building occupants. Connecting clever lighting end points provides a cost-effective means to deploy the sensors needed to feed Niagara directly as well as associated IoT systems.

“For too long lighting system have been focused solely on illumination,” said Sharer. “The new generation of clever luminaires with integrated sensors can deliver new types of data to Niagara natively via direct end-point communications. By connecting luminaires and their sensors to Niagara platforms directly, Niagara users will have a system that delivers previously unavailable building information, enhancing the value of Niagara based IoT edge controllers and paving the way for IoT communications.”

Sharer predicts that clever lighting units could be adapted to monitor and manage various building functions. For example, locally installed sensors could also be used to detect heat, humidity, measure air quality to provide additional information to HVAC systems. Information derived from Clever luminaires and sensors could also be used to augment life safety systems. And with the number of luminaries in close proximity in the average commercial building, clever lighting components can be readily connected using wireless technology such as Bluetooth Mesh, which could simplify installing luminaire retrofits to support Niagara building controls.

Fulham is a leading supplier of clever LED lighting components and has been working with partners to promote intelligent lighting by connecting clever luminaires. The company also offers elitedali™, a native DALI Niagara product that can transform any NiagaraAX or Niagara4 platform into an IoT convergent lighting commissioning and control platform.

Fulham To Show New DirectAC LED Engines at Strategies in Light

New DirectAC Designed with Integrated Circuitry to Create a Low-Flicker, Low-Profile Lighting Component for Surface Mounted Luminaires.

Anaheim, CA, USA — Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, will be demonstrating its new DirectAC LED Engines at the Strategies in Light conference being held here this week. The new AC direct drive unit removes the need for a driver, resulting in a cost-efficient, reliable lighting solution that is ideal for wall sconces and ceiling luminaires.

Eliminating the need for a separate LED driver gives the DirectAC LED Engines an extremely low profile that simplifies installation. The units come in a full range of wattages, from 10W to 34W, making them ideal substitutes for fluorescent luminaires. They also feature extremely low flicker to achieve CEC Title 24 requirements, and offer smooth TRIAC/ELV dimming down to 10 percent.

“We are seeing increasing demand for versatile LED luminaires that can serve as fluorescent alternatives and retrofits,” said Edwin Reyes, Product Director, LED Light Sources at Fulham. “Our new DirectAC LED Engines are designed as high-performance, low-energy units that are easy to install and offer a longer lifespan than fluorescents with a fraction of the power consumption. They are an ideal solid-state lighting alternative to fluorescent lighting.”

In addition, the DirectAC LED Engines are available in a variety of color temperatures with a CRI up to 90. The units feature a high voltage barrier lens that meets the UL 5VA flame-rating, which allow them to be used with plastic diffusers in open or fully enclosed luminaires. In addition, they can be installed in both dry and damp locations.

The DirectAC units are available in three configurations: the engine only, the engine with lens, and the engine with lens and mounting plate. All units are UL and select models are ENERGY STAR® Luminaire 2.0 listed so they qualify for most rebate programs.

The DirectAC LED Engines are available from Fulham locations worldwide. For more information, visit http://www.fulham.com.
