BT Denies Claims of shortage in Engineers for Broadband Rollout

March 30, 2012 – An ex-BT executive and telecoms expert has said to a parliamentary committee that BT are worried about the shortage of engineers they have who can fit broadband in people’s homes. Also, he added that a national apprenticeship scheme could help boost the broadband rollout speeds and also aid the rising unemployment rates.

BT has committed to upgrading 1450 exchanges in the UK which will receive the fibre cables and also currently employ approximately 4,000 engineers which will carry out the work. However, the man who was providing evidence at a parliamentary committee which is investigating the UK’s superfast broadband rollout, Lorne Mitchell suggested that BT is anxious that they don’t have enough engineers to carry out the work.

He provided an example that in Kent, which is where he is from that BT are working on a community project to deliver broadband to residents, however 80% of the exchanges have no plans to be upgraded. He also argued that the Government have an opportunity to introduce an apprenticeship scheme which wouldn’t only benefit the rolling out of the superfast broadband but it would also help unemployed people to get back into work.
