Knightmare on Wall Streets Edgar Perez on Chinas Decision to Allow Foreign Hedge Funds to Raise Yuan

Building off of the momentum of past conferences, Golden Networking brings back China Leaders Forum 2013 (ChinaLeadersForum.com), “Will the Chinese Dream Become Long-term Investors’ Dream or Nightmare?”, New York, October 1st.

New York City, NY, USA (September 18, 2013) — Golden Networking’s China Leaders Forum 2013, “Will the Chinese Dream Become Long-term Investors’ Dream or Nightmare?”, to be held on October 1st, New York City, will bring Mr. Edgar Perez, Author of The Speed Traders (http://www.thespeedtraders.com) and Knightmare on Wall Street (http://www.knightmareonwallstreet.com), as keynote speaker on “From CSRC’s Policing of Everbright Securities to SAFE’s Green Lighting of Foreign Hedge Funds Raising Yuan for Overseas Investment.” China Leaders Forum 2013 (http://www.chinaleadersforum.com), in its fifth edition, is gearing up to provide the information practitioners are looking for in an open and unbiased environment, highly conducive to the most efficient and effective networking.

Less than a month after trading incidents generated by Everbright Securities, China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange has taken a step forward in its plan to open up its capital account and internationalize its currency with a trial program that allows foreign hedge funds to raise money denominated in yuan for overseas investment. Each of six hedge funds will be allowed to raise up to $50 million worth of yuan in China, according to people familiar with the situation.

While the trial program is minuscule in comparison with a similar program set up in 2006 for domestic investors, Mr. Perez will focus on the significance as a move toward full convertibility of the Chinese currency, which the country’s leadership has pledged as part of efforts to move away from a command economy. China’s regulators approved the pilot-program launch in Shanghai, with six firms-Oaktree Capital Management, Och-Ziff Capital Management Group, Winton Capital Management, Man Group, Citadel and Canyon Partners-getting the go-ahead.

Edgar Perez’s Knightmare on Wall Street Featured by Columbia Alumni Association’s Career News

Edgar Perez, Author, The Speed Traders, and Course Director, The Speed Traders Workshop, Introduces Knightmare on Wall Street, The Rise and Fall of Knight Capital and the Biggest Risk for Financial Markets, a Behind-the-scenes Look at Knight Capital’s 17 years of Tumultuous Existence as an Independent Company.

New York City, NY, USA (September 3, 2013) — Mr. Edgar Perez’s latest book Knightmare on Wall Street, The Rise and Fall of Knight Capital and the Biggest Risk for Financial Markets, exclusively available at http://www.KnightmareonWallStreet.com, has been featured by Columbia Alumni Association’s Career News; the association is Columbia University’s official outreach to its thousands of alumni around the world. Mr. Perez received a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School, New York, with a dual major in Finance and Management, in 2002; as such, he belongs to the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

Knightmare on Wall Street is a thrilling minute-by-minute account of the terrifying hours following their August 1, 2012 trading debacle, with news-breaking research regarding Knight Capital’s 17 years of tumultuous existence as an independent company. On August 1, 2012, Knight Capital announced a staggering loss of $440 million, after issuing an unprecedented number of erroneous orders into the market, at 9:30 A.M., due to an error in installing new software. What followed after this shocking announcement were several rounds of desperate conversations with a number of vulture players who had smelled opportunity and were readying themselves to pick up bargain-priced pieces.

On August 6, 2012, CEO Thomas Joyce confirmed that Knight Capital had struck a deal with Jefferies, TD Ameritrade, Blackstone, GETCO, Stephens, and Stifel Financial, staving off collapse days after the trading mishap. While Knight Capital was back in the game, its limping recovery quickly prompted hungry competitors to bid for the entire company. On December 19, 2012, the board decided to accept an acquisition proposal from GETCO rather than Virtu Financial. For GETCO, acquiring Knight Capital represented a gigantic fast forward step. For Knight Capital, it was the end of its wild ride as an independent entity.

Edgar Perez to Squawk On The Street’s Kelly Evans, Carl Quintanilla: U.S. Financial Markets at Risk

New York City, NY, USA (August 24, 2013) — “The issues that happened yesterday are not about NYSE versus NASDAQ, KCG Holdings versus Citadel or Goldman Sachs versus Morgan Stanley. This is about the United States’ competitive standing as the world’s most sophisticated financial market, a position it has to keep at all costs,” said Edgar Perez, the celebrated author of The Speed Traders (http://www.TheSpeedTraders.com) and Knightmare on Wall Street, The Rise and Fall of Knight Capital and the Biggest Risk for Financial Markets (http://www.KnightmareonWallStreet.com), to CNBC’s Squawk On The Street’s anchors Kelly Evans and Carl Quintanilla today. The full interview can be accessed at http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?play=1&video=3000193177.

As informed by NASDAQ yesterday, price quotes were not being disseminated by the Securities Information Processor (SIP) for three hours. There was a connectivity issue, which led to degradation in the ability of the SIP to disseminate consolidated quotes and trades. After the cause of the issue, The Flash Freeze, was identified and addressed, trading resumed at 3:25PM. While NASDAQ has promised to work with other exchanges that are members of the SIP to investigate the issues, their time to self-police has passed.

New York City, NY, USA (August 24, 2013) — “Market participants appreciate visible leadership that goes beyond statements sent though by a press office. Both individual and institutional investors would have felt more comfortable yesterday if they had seen the SEC chairman, Mary Jo White, discussing the NASDAQ issue and the steps the SEC was taking to monitor their efforts to resume trading,” said Edgar Perez, author of The Speed Traders (http://www.TheSpeedTraders.com) and Knightmare on Wall Street, The Rise and Fall of Knight Capital and the Biggest Risk for Financial Markets (http://www.KnightmareonWallStreet.com), to CNBC’s Squawk On The Street’s anchors Kelly Evans and Carl Quintanilla today. Readers will discover in Knightmare on Wall Street, The Rise and Fall of Knight Capital and the Biggest Risk for Financial Markets, a thrilling minute-by-minute account of the terrifying hours following Knight Capital’s August 1, 2012 trading debacle, with news-breaking research regarding the firm’s 17 years of tumultuous existence as an independent company. Knightmare on Wall Street provides a fascinating account of what it took to elevate the firm to the cusp of the retail investing revolution of the late 1990s, to struggle through booms and busts, and to bring the firm down, to end up ultimately being ignominiously bought up by a competitor.

At 9:30 A.M. on August 1, 2012, right after the markets opened for the day, Knight Capital began issuing an unprecedented number of erroneous orders into the market, due to an error in installing new software. No rogue trader or regulatory change; operational risk was passing the bill to Knight Capital and becoming the biggest risk in the financial markets. Knight Capital announced later a staggering loss of $440 million. What followed after this shocking announcement were several rounds of desperate conversations with a number of vulture players who had smelled opportunity and were readying themselves to pick up bargain-priced pieces. On August 6, 2012, Joyce confirmed that Knight Capital had struck a deal with Jefferies, TD Ameritrade, Blackstone, GETCO, Stephens, and Stifel Financial, staving off collapse days after the trading mishap.

Algorithmic Trading, App Development, Financial Markets: Edgar Perez’s The Speed Traders Has it All

Edgar Perez, Author, The Speed Traders: An Insider’s Look at the New High-Frequency Trading Phenomenon That is Transforming the Investing World, Published by in English by McGraw-Hill Inc. (2011), Mandarin by China Financial Publishing House (2012), and Bahasa Indonesia by Kompas Gramedia (2012) and Course Director, The Speed Traders Workshop 2012 (Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Warsaw, Kiev, Beijing and Shanghai).

New York City, NY, USA (June 13, 2013) — Reviews at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0071768289) predominantly offer top ratings for The Speed Traders (http://www.TheSpeedTraders.com) by Edgar Perez, a global speaker on high-frequency trading; “The Speed Traders is a clear and informative read that can be useful to both seasoned industry professionals and those who are only exploring the financial industry.”

“One of the least explained areas of finance is high frequency trading and Edgar Perez’s book, The Speed Traders, gives an extensive overview of this topic. The insightful descriptions of the daily activities of the market and their role in the lives of securities dealers allow it to reveal the methods that traders use. The book utilizes interviews with recognized industry professionals and a timeline of the evolution of speed trading to provide the reader with a great idea on what speed trading is and how to use it. Some of the major focusing points of the book are the modern applications of speed trading. These applications are not only explained through examples and interviews but also in a clear way that excludes confusing industry jargon and paints a clear picture of the topic at hand.”

“The Speed Traders, written by Edgar Perez, offers cutting-edge intelligence on the relatively concealed industry of High-Frequency-Trading. The substantial foundation of HFT is laid out and combined with thorough interviews to make sense of the complicated technicalities in HFT. Perez gives the whole picture by critically defining HFT, charting its inconspicuous emanation into the securities market, breaking down the flash crash of 2010, forecasting the indisputable role that HFT will play in the financial world, and perhaps most importantly, walking the reader through 6 different evaluations with actual high frequency traders. The interviews were the most valuable asset in making this industry understandable. The first person narrative is key because it’s easy to comprehend and relatively scarce in current literature for many reasons, two of which are that traders are reluctant to disclose strategies on generating alpha and the barriers of entry to the HFT industry are so high that there is only a limited amount of traders that actually know what they are talking about.”

Perez is widely regarded as the preeminent global expert in the specialized area of high-frequency trading. He is author of The Speed Traders, An Insider’s Look at the New High-Frequency Trading Phenomenon That is Transforming the Investing World, published in English by McGraw-Hill Inc. (2011), in Mandarin by China Financial Publishing House (2012) and currently being translated into Bahasa Indonesia and Portuguese.

The Speed Traders, published by McGraw-Hill Inc., is the most comprehensive, revealing work available on the most important development in trading in generations. High-frequency trading will no doubt play an ever larger role as computer technology advances and the global exchanges embrace fast electronic access. The Speed Traders explains everything there is to know about how today’s high-frequency traders make millions-one cent at a time. In this new title, The Speed Traders, Perez opens the door to the secretive world of high-frequency trading. Inside, prominent figures drop their guard and speak with unprecedented candidness about their trade. He contributes regularly to China’s International Finance News.

Perez has been engaged to present to the Council on Foreign Relations, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (Washington DC), CFA Singapore, Hong Kong Securities Institute, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, University of International Business and Economics (Beijing), Hult International Business School (Shanghai) and Pace University (New York), among other public and private institutions. In addition, Perez has spoken at a number of global conferences, including Harvard Business School’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Conference (Boston), High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum (New York, Chicago), MIT Sloan Investment Management Conference (Cambridge), Institutional Investor’s Global Growth Markets Forum (London), Technical Analysis Society (Singapore), TradeTech Asia (Singapore), FIXGlobal Face2Face (Seoul) and Private Equity Convention Russia, CIS & Eurasia (London).

Perez was a vice president at Citigroup, a senior consultant at IBM, and a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co. in New York City. New York City, NY, USA (May 10, 2013) — On May 6th, 2010, the U.S. stock markets experienced an unusual decline (and an immediate upswing) that temporarily erased $1 trillion in market value (the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged about 1000 points) and puzzled both actors and experts following the markets. Fast forward two years and we find a twit from the Associated Press with supposedly breaking news that President Obama was injured due to explosions at the White House.
