For Sale: Extraordinary Real Estate Opportunities in Carmel Valley that are Worlds Apart, But Share a Certain Aesthetic — Only the Best of the Best Will Do

These two show-stopping properties couldn’t be more different, however, what they do have in common is that they are two of the most spectacular properties in an area known worldwide for spectacular properties, and both are one-of-a-kind real estate!

Carmel, CA, July 31, 2018 — These two show-stopping properties couldn’t be more different, however, what they do have in common is that they are two of the most spectacular properties in an area known worldwide for spectacular properties, and both are one-of-a-kind real estate!

The other common denominators are they are both in the verdant Carmel Valley on the Central Coast of California and they’re represented by Monterey Peninsula real estate agent Doug Steiny, a fifth generation and longtime resident of Monterey Peninsula and a licensed Realtor for more than 30 years, working with Sotheby’s International Realty.

The first property is “The Crown Jewel Of Carmel Valley,” also known as the “River House,” and is a 4,762-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half–bath French country chateau located a stone’s throw from the Carmel River, but well above the flood plain, on a secluded knoll. In fact, it is the only place on the Carmel River where there is water year-round.

Originally built by a Central Valley tomato grower and his wife, who discovered the property by walking along the river until she found the perfect location, the villa boasts massive French oak entry doors, 17th century roof tiles from a monastery in Burgundy, terra cotta kitchen floors, antique French chandeliers throughout, 17th century fireplaces, in-ground pool, spa/hot tub, herb/vegetable garden, library and a two-car garage.

One of its most striking features is its main staircase, which is French oak and features a bannister created by a San Francisco woodworking artisan, who had to steam, bend and twist 15-foot sections of French oak to create. “It’s not just something you can just go out and buy,” says Steiny.

“The entire property is like a piece of art, including the land on which it sits,” says Steiny, who, even with all his experience in the business, still marvels at the $6.5 million property. ”It’s just breath-taking. You walk in and are visually transported into a fantastic dream. I’m seeing something truly special.’”

The same could be said for the second property, which is as far from French country as you can get and is located on the opposite end of Carmel Valley, in horse and ranch country.

Fox Creek Ranch sits on 276 acres of unparalleled beauty, complete with nine-stall 4,600-square-foot horse stable, riding area with covered round pen and seven fully fenced and irrigated pastures, an equipment bar and hay barn, a 450-square-foot garage, six water wells with 100,000-gallon storage tank, solar panels throughout, and 5 acres of Pinot Noir grapevines and 1 acre of Chardonnay grapes.

And all that doesn’t include the main house! The 4,000-square-foot-plus ranch-style main house features exposed oak beams, hickory-planked floors, walls of double-stacked Montana fieldstone, three bedrooms, two full baths, one half-bath, a fitness room, office, heated in-ground pool, spa/hot tub, outdoor barbecue and fireplace, expansive deck/patio, and 875-square-foot garage.

There’s also a 3,100-square foot guest house with many of the same features, such as double-stacked Montana fieldstone, and amenities, including three bedrooms, den, full kitchen and laundry.

The horse stable is a sight to behold. The developers of the property, Tom and Judy Deregt, didn’t want to spare any expense in building the stables, barns, pastures and riding areas. Starting from scratch, they re-engineered the soil on about 50-60 acres (“It’s like building a golf course from scratch,” says Steiny) and spent $3.3 million on the stables alone.

The stables, built for cutting horses, consist of a 4,600-square-foot horse barn with nine stalls, tack room, hot/cold water wash bay, office, laundry room and full bath. It’s built with stacked Montana fieldstone, covered with slate shingle roofing, and decorated with iron-capped Australian hardwood, and was designed by a renowned barn designer. “It’s like a four-star hotel for horses,” quips Steiny.

“It’s just gorgeous, but it doesn’t feel at all ostentatious, it feels really nice” marvels Steiny about the $19 million (asking price, well below its actual value) property, which sits on a wide bench just a few miles east of Carmel Valley Village. “I would just leave it as is, just have fun with it. Most properties like this are a lot of work, this is not. It’s absolutely immaculate, every inch of it.”

These two prestige properties may be worlds apart in terms of style and size, but they share a certain aesthetic — only the best of the best will do.

Carmel Valley, California Winery Launches Two New Wines for Charity Benefitting Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation

Jarman Tasting Lounge and Patio Opens in Carmel Valley Wine Tasting and Special Picnic Packages Now Available

Carmel Valley, CA, August 08, 2015 — Carmel Valley’s newest winery, Jarman Wines, will introduce two premium varietals to help benefit the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and to honor the matriarch of the family whose name graces the wines created for her. In addition, the winery has opened a tasting room in Carmel Valley that offers three levels of wine tasting and three specially themed picnic packages.

To honor her late mother Jarman Fearing Lowder’s memory, Holman Ranch manager and eldest daughter Hunter Lowder took the best hand-selected estate grapes and created two premium varietals—Jarman Chardonnay and Jarman Pinot Noir—with $1 from each bottle sold going to the ADDF.

Jarman Lowder grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., and lived up to being voted “best all around” in high school. She earned a nursing degree, worked as an R.N. and raised three daughters with her husband, Thomas. An active volunteer, animal lover, athlete and enthusiastic traveler, Jarman wanted to spend her golden years making wine with her husband at Holman Ranch, an idyllic piece of property in Carmel Valley, Ca. they purchased to realize that dream. Tragically, Lowder died in March 2011 at age 60 following a long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Holman Ranch and Jarman Wines partnered with the ADDF to support research toward treatments and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and to celebrate the life of Jarman Lowder. “We wanted to honor her, give back and increase awareness,” said her daughter Hunter. “Everything we do here and the reason all this exists is because of her.”

“We appreciate the generous support of Holman Ranch and the Lowder family,” says Dr. Howard Fillit, founding Executive Director and Chief Science Officer for the ADDF. “And we are proud that 100 percent of every dollar donated through this partnership will go directly to fund drug research for Alzheimer’s disease.” Dr. Fillit knew Jarman Lowder personally and was excited by the opportunity to honor her legacy in such a meaningful way.

About the ADDF
Founded in 1998 by co-chairmen Leonard A. and Ronald S. Lauder, the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation is dedicated to rapidly accelerating the discovery of drugs to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer’s disease. It follows a venture philanthropy model, funding promising research in academia and the biotech industry. And it’s the only such charity solely dedicated to funding the development of drugs for Alzheimer’s. Since its founding, the ADDF has awarded more than $70 million to fund over 450 Alzheimer’s drug discovery programs and clinical trials in 18 countries. By supporting innovative research projects around the globe, the ADDF increases the chance of finding a cure.

About Jarman Wines
Jarman’s terroir (a French word that speaks to a wine’s place of origin, its subtle nuances of traceable character, flavor, lineage and integrity) refers to a special place in Carmel Valley—and also to a special woman who inspired a family to bottle the essence of a mother’s spirit. The Jarman label will reflect quality, with only the best local grapes used during an artisanal, small-batch winemaking process. Jarman wine uses only 100 percent estate-grown, organic and certified-sustainable grapes. Aged in French oak barrels, Jarman’s vintages are held in limited supply, and not available anywhere outside their tasting room. The two varietals include:

• The 2013 Jarman Pinot Noir takes on nuances of warm blueberry pie, cloves and cinnamon that mingle in the nose with oak notes from 10 months in the barrel. The mouth-feel is plump and juicy with overtones of cassis and blackberries.

• The 2014 Jarman Chardonnay features floral notes reminiscent of walking by a parfumerie in France — subtle and pleasant with a hint of earthiness. When serving this wine lightly chilled, rich notes of underripe berries and raw honey will waltz across your palate.

To further honor their mother’s memory, the family has opened a special tasting room in Carmel Valley Village (open noon to 5 p.m., Thurs.-Sun.; or by appointment) next to Will’s Fargo Steakhouse + Bar, the restaurant they purchased in 2014. The tastings will feature full-fledged experiences, including tours and wine education, and each will include a food element that complements the wine. The new Jarman tasting room will provide visitors with three unique experiences: Cru Tasting, Premier Cru Experience and the Grand Cru Experience.

New Tasting Room and Wine Brand Launch in Carmel Valley!

Jarman Tasting Room Opens June 2015.

Carmel Valley, CA, May 20, 2015 — Terroir is the most important force in creating distinct wines. The French word speaks to a wine’s place of origin, its subtle nuances of traceable character, flavor, lineage and integrity.

An estate wine from Carmel Valley, Jarman’s terroir refers to a special place — and also to a special woman who inspired a family to bottle the essence of a mother’s spirit.

Jarman Fearing Lowder grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., and lived up to being voted “best all around” in high school. Founded in 1998 by Leonard A. and Ronald S. Lauder, the ADDF provides critical seed funding to leading scientists conducting breakthrough drug discovery and clinical research. By accelerating promising drug candidates through the drug discovery and development pipeline and spearheading innovative public-private partnerships, we increase the chance of finding an effective treatment, and a cure, for Alzheimer’s disease.

Through the tremendous support of our donors, the ADDF has invested more than $70 million to over 450 Alzheimer’s drug discovery programs and clinical trials in academic centers and biotechnology companies in 18 countries. https://www.alzdiscovery.org/about-addf

Carmel Valley Wine Experience Includes 9 Wineries and Tasting Rooms on a 12-Mile Scenic Stretch of Carmel Valley Road in Monterey California

Carmel Valley Wine Experience Offers Cellar Passes Just in Time For the Holidays and New Year.

Carmel Valley, CA, December 18, 2014 – Compared to the sizeable California wine region in Napa, the Carmel Valley appellation is a mere pinprick on the state’s oenological map. Lacking the notoriety and sheer volume of the famous valley to the north, Carmel Valley has evolved into a destination hot spot of its own — only for different reasons.

California’s 13th oldest appellation (designated in 1983) the Carmel Valley boasts oak-studded hillsides bathed in sunlight, an abundance of open space split by a meandering river, and a charming village with character and characters. With just 300 acres under vine, the Carmel Valley AVA retains its charm and genuineness, deserving consideration from wine lovers who desire a less-hectic, more-hospitable wine tasting destination.

A tour along a 12-mile scenic stretch of Carmel Valley Road in Monterey County reveals wineries, tasting rooms, art galleries, amazing foods and thousands of acres of parkland. Absent is the traffic, crowds and expensive restaurants familiar to massive wine regions that find themselves dog-eared in travel guides. The Carmel Valley Wine Experience is a collective of Carmel Valley tasting rooms that offer resources and insight to travelers as well as unique access and member benefits to visitors that so wish it.

The Carmel Valley Wine Experience highlights the valley’s wine tasting opportunities, while embracing its slow pace of life, leisure activities such as hiking and golf, as well as the boutiques, galleries and bevy of fine restaurants and cafes. The special quality that allows Carmel Valley to transcend the ordinary is evident in the Carmel Valley wineries and tasting rooms. The rugged Carmel Valley begins at the mouth of the Carmel River and the dramatic valley runs in a southeastern direction along the river. Dominated by red Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Burgundian grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The tasting rooms also feature wines from throughout Monterey County, including the Arroyo Seco and famed Santa Lucia Highlands.

Most of the valley’s tasting rooms are just a short stroll from each other, allowing visitors to take a wine tour on foot. For those who don’t want to drive at all, Monterey-Salinas Transit Bus 24, called the Grapevine Express, stops at many of the wineries. It departs from the Monterey Transit Plaza, located across from the Cooper-Molera Adobe in Old Monterey.

While often lively, Carmel Valley’s tasting rooms provide a warm, personal interaction with tasting hosts and often the winemakers themselves. It’s all part of the Carmel Valley Wine Experience. Drink it all in soon.
