Start-Up Launches Innovative British Designed and Built Analogue/Digital Music Synthesiser

Next Generation Music Synthesiser will drive a New Wave of Music Creation.

Bristol, UK (July 11, 2014) — Modulus, a Bristol-based start-up that designs and manufactures musical instruments, has launched the Modulus.002, the world’s first analogue/digital music synthesiser designed for the Internet age. Designed and built in the UK by a team of passionate synthesiser experts, it creates the rich analogue sounds that have been at the heart of creative music since the 1960’s by using a mix of classic analogue techniques and the latest digital technology to give reliability and innovation.

“Analogue synthesisers from the last century are collectors’ items and highly sought after because of the amazing sounds but the electronics are now getting old and increasingly frail,” explained Philip Taysom, Modulus co-founder. “It’s tough to use them for live performances or recording sessions as they are difficult to keep working. Most modern designs of polyphonic synthesisers are pure digital and just don’t have the same iconic sound qualities, in our opinion. What we have created in the Modulus.002 is a fusion of these iconic analogue and hybrid sounds of the 70s and 80s synthesisers with the reliability of the latest electronics plus Internet connectivity to share sounds, settings and work collaboratively on music without relying on painfully slow serial/MIDI connections to do so. This is the first synthesiser designed for the interconnected 21st Century. The UK pioneered the synthesiser industry back in the 60s and 70s and that has grown to a three-quarters of a billion pound a year global business, but now with little UK input. We are putting the UK back on the map with the first polyphonic synthesiser to have been completely designed and built in the UK for several decades.”

Modulus was founded in 2013 by Philip Taysom and Paul Maddox. Philip has over 30 years of experience in the electronics and computer industries having been CTO and co-founder of Planet Online (the creators of the highly successful Freeserve internet service), CTO and co-founder of inTechnology plc, and CEO of Peratech. Paul has been designing synthesisers for over 15 years with a reputation in the industry for designing state of the art products that bring the best of classic designs into the modern age. This highly experienced management team is complimented by designers and engineers, most of whom are also graduates in Music Technology. This team of eight has taken just under a year to take the Modulus.002 from drawing board to volume production.

“Alongside the voice architecture, a key innovation is that the Modulus.002 connects to the Internet,” explained Paul Maddox, Modulus co-founder. “As musicians and synthesiser enthusiasts ourselves, we know exactly how people actually use synthesisers and what they wish they could do; so we designed the Modulus.002 to be the instrument that meets those needs and be the next generation synthesiser to inspire a new wave of musical creation. Synthesisers have been a defining part of the music of every decade for the past fifty years with each new generation of synthesiser providing a new soundscape. Being able to work collaboratively is fundamental and the Modulus.002 enables this to happen very easily using its Internet connection to the Modulus, cloud-based server platform to share settings, sequences and sounds. Musicians can now work together thousands of miles apart to create new music together. But, we wanted to go further than this, so we’re making our cloud technology Open Platform and, later in the year, we aim to form a consortium to encourage adoption of this standard by other manufacturers.”

The Modulus.002™ is the first in a planned family of synthesisers that will be launched over the next few years. Dealers and agents are being established in many countries and product will be available by the end of July 2014. The UK price is £2995 plus VAT (£3594), the European price €3,750 plus the appropriate VAT and the US price is $5200 plus local sales tax — prices correct at time of release.

Modulus.002
Using high quality components, the Modulus.002 is a premium product designed to be the flagship in the Modulus range. The keyboard layout includes a semi-weighted, five octave key mechanism and has been ergonomically designed by musicians so that the hands fall naturally and intuitively to the controls. It provides twelve discrete voices of polyphony with full multi-timbrility if required. Adding to the ease of use is a large integral display screen that is context sensitive, i.e. it displays the control parameters of any control knobs immediately when touched by the user. Quick recall banks enable preset sequences and settings to be stored for instant use such as during a live performance. NCOs (Numerically Controlled Oscillators) are used for stability and accuracy while an analogue transistor ladder filter provides classic ‘warm’ sounds. Full specifications can be found at http://www.modulusmusic.co.uk.

Synthesisers
Since the first commercial synthesisers became available in the 1960s – notably those from Moog, EMS, ARP, Roland and Korg, synthesiser music has been an integral part of the sound of each decade. Experimental and Rock in the 60’s by The Who and Pink Floyd. Jean Michelle Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk, Abba, and Roxy Music are a few of the bands that brought the synthesiser into mainstream music in the 70s. By the 80s, the choice of synthesiser sound defined the band for the likes of Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, etc. From the 90s on, synthesiser music then became the backbone of Techno, Trance, Acid, Garage, Rave and Hip Hop, and is still at the heart of music being created today and is as fundamental as the microphone in recording music.

Modulus Limited
Modulus is a UK-headquartered designer and manufacturer of electronic musical instruments. Based in Bristol, UK, the company employs a team of eight engineers in the design of its synthesisers. Modulus instruments bring cutting edge technology and user interface features, but combine them with traditional voice architectures, giving musicians access to the kind of synthesiser sounds previously only available from vintage instruments from the 70’s and 80’s. Founded in 2013, Modulus builds on the fifteen-year experience in designing and constructing high quality synthesisers of its co-founder, Paul Maddox. Bringing high technology into musical instruments has always been a passion for Philip Taysom, a serial technology entrepreneur, co-founder of Modulus. Modulus is privately owned and financed.

Biotage Launches ACI™ – Accelerated Chromatographic Isolation

Biotage announces the launch of ACI™ (Accelerated Chromatographic Isolation), a new advance converting simple flash purification into a faster and more economical way to isolate pure compounds.

Uppsala, Sweden (July 10, 2014) — Biotage (STO: BIOT), a leading global supplier of solutions and technology for analytical, medicinal and peptide chemistry, announces the launch of ACI™ (Accelerated Chromatographic Isolation), a new advance converting simple flash purification into a faster and more economical way to isolate pure compounds.

Biotage believes that ACI™ will radically improve the efficiency of the laboratory, embracing the latest developments in purification technology to guide chemists towards improved chromatography. With running costs a concern in most laboratories, ACI™ will efficiently move users to the end-point even faster. Traditional purification taking more than 15 minutes is reduced to 5 minutes; a 250 mg scale laboratory scale experiment can now be purified in less than 3 minutes on a 10 g column with an ACI™ enabled Biotage Isolera™ flash purification system.

“This is a very exciting and pivotal development, the speed enhancements are akin to the impact felt when microwaves first hit the scene. There is nothing out there that comes close to this system. Chemists will now have freedom to work on other things while they let their ACI™ system do the purification. It is fully automated, reliable and lightning fast, we can completely purify 250 mg of sample in less than 3 minutes, this is quicker than most people take to run the TLC” says Dr Sunil Rana, Global Product Manager, Biotage.

Biotage Isolera™ systems already recommend cartridges based on the sample size and programmed TLC data; they work out the best solvent gradient based on compound, and provide real time indication of eluting compounds, using UV, ELSD or Mass Detection. They subtract signal baselines automatically, so chemists can be confident that the correct fractions are collected.

ACI™ radically improves this, working seamlessly with the Biotage Isolera™ system, the simple wizard quickly guides chemists through the system, beneficial for new users or those whose expertise or priorities lie in synthesis rather than purification. Existing Biotage Isolera systems can be upgraded to ACI™ systems, and ACI™ will come as standard on all new production systems.

New 1 mL ISOLUTE® SLE+ 48-well Plates from Biotage – Extract Larger Sample Volumes, Faster

Biotage announces the launch of the new ISOLUTE® SLE+ 1 mL Supported Liquid Extraction 48-well plates, enabling the extraction of larger sample volumes (1 mL total load volume) than presently possible in the microplate footprint.

Uppsala, Sweden (June 30, 2014) — Biotage (STO: BIOT), a leading global supplier of solutions and technology for analytical, medicinal and peptide chemistry, announces the launch of the new ISOLUTE® SLE+ 1 mL Supported Liquid Extraction 48-well plates, enabling the extraction of larger sample volumes (1 mL total load volume) than presently possible in the microplate footprint.

The new ISOLUTE® SLE+ 1 mL sample volume 48-well plates are packed with ISOLUTE SLE+ material; each well containing sufficient ISOLUTE® SLE+ material to efficiently extract 1 mL of aqueous sample. Existing 96-well formats have a maximum capacity of 400 µL, the new plates enable customers to extract larger sample volumes and therefore achieve higher sensitivity, higher throughput and lower detection limits.

The new plates are ideal for the extraction of small molecule drugs, metabolites and endogenous biomarkers from biological fluid samples prior to analytical techniques such as LC-MS/MS and GC-MS. Analytical chemists in clinical, forensic toxicology and Pharmacology will appreciate the high throughput and extra sample capacity.

As with the other products in the ISOLUTE® SLE+ range, the same simple load-wait-elute procedure is used with this new 48-well format reducing method development time.

The plates can be processed using microplate compatible positive pressure manifolds, such as the Biotage® Pressure+ 96, vacuum manifolds such as the Biotage® VacMaster™ 96 and most automated liquid handling systems.

The plate is arranged in a 6 x 8 array; with 48 samples being processed per plate a higher throughput than equivalent column formats is achievable. A new compatible 48-well collection plate is also available with a 5 mL capacity so that the entire elution solvent volume can be collected with no need to swap collection vessels.

New CIR Report States that Sales of Active Optical Cables for the Data Center To Reach $1.5 billion

According to a new report from Communications Industry Researchers, sales of active optical cables (AOCs) for the data center will produce $1.5 billion in revenues by 2019.

Charlottesville, VA, USA (June 27, 2014) — According to a new report from Communications Industry Researchers, sales of active optical cables (AOCs) for the data center will produce $1.5 billion in revenues by 2019. The report “Active Optical Cable Markets – Data Center Applications,” is part of a two-volume set. CIR has also recently published an analysis and forecast of the market for AOCs for applications in personal computing, consumer electronics and digital signage.

More details about this report can be found at: http://www.cir-inc.com/reports/active-optical-cable-markets-and-opportunities-2014-to-2024-volume-i-data-c.

About the report:

This report identifies and quantifies opportunities for selling AOCs for the data center. AOCs in this sector carry Ethernet, InfiniBand (IB), Fibre Channel and SAS. Specifically, the report provides coverage on AOCs supporting the CX4, SFP/SFP+, QSFP, CXP, CFP, CDFP, and SAS/Min-SAS MSAs. In addition, the report provides detailed nine-year forecasts of data center AOC markets, with breakouts by end-user application, interface standard, cable lengths, type of cable and wavelength. Forecasts are provided in units shipped and revenue terms.

This new CIR study also assesses the product/market strategies of the leading AOC suppliers including: 3M, 10GTEK, A3CUBE, Amphenol, Avago, Brocade, Centera Photonics, ConnPro, Eoptolink, FCI, Fiberon, Finisar, Fujikura, Gigalight, Fujitsu, Hitachi Cable, IBM, InnoLight, JDSU, Juniper Networks, Luxtera, Mellanox, Molex, Multilane, Samtec, Siemon, Sopto, Sumitomo, TE Connectivity, Volex.

From the report:

Data centers are getting bigger and are requiring much higher data-rate pipes and interconnects than ever before. Mobile broadband and video applications are flooding data centers with content and this creates a growing incentive to shift to fiber in at least part of the data center. It is becoming increasingly difficult for data center managers to avoid fiber optics and at the same time AOCs offer an excellent entry point for fiber optics to all but the most structured-cabling savvy network managers.

Chinese AOC suppliers are showing that they can compete with the best U.S., European and Japanese AOC suppliers. They are now able to supply 40 Gbps cables with ease and a few are offering 100-Gbps AOCs. A few years back CIR would have seen the whole optical engine concept as beyond the capabilities of Chinese suppliers. But today Gigalight is using optical engines as the basis for its optical data center products, and other Chinese firms are expected to follow suit.

The Chinese AOC challenge will require a strategic response from established AOC firms. This could take the form of better branding, improved supply chains or upgraded products. For example, the TE Connectivity line was upgraded in 2011 with 40-Gbps products that offered reduced power consumption and lighter-weight cables and other leading AOC firms will follow suit.

We also expect to see more activity in AOCs that use the highest-performance modules. Such AOCs are not easy to make and this presents barriers to entry into the data center markets for smaller, less able AOC firms; providing market protection for the largest suppliers. The markets for such high-end AOCs are also not inconsiderable. CFP and CDFP together are expected to generate $190 million in revenues by 2019. Indeed, we think that the proverbial “next big thing” in the AOC space will be CDFP AOCs and expect to see such products prominently displayed at the OFC, ECOC and SC trade shows in 2015. For now, the three companies to watch in this space are Finisar, Molex and TE Connectivity, all of which have already introduced CDFP AOCs.

Nonetheless, throughout the period considered in this report, the “workhorse” QSFP and CXP AOCs will be the biggest revenue earners, with combined sales of $1.3 billion in 2019. These MSAs support both the Ethernet and IB protocols that are core to any data center and at data rates that are likely to be the ones most used in data centers over the next decade. The earliest QSFP AOCs catered to the 10-Gbps market, but the QSFP AOC business is now centered around the 40-Gbps opportunity. CXP can support 100 GigE or three 40-GigE channels. At this point almost every firm offering a range of AOCs includes CXP options.
