DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction Offers Many Advantages, Explains NY Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Mihye Choi

New York, NY ( Realtimepressrelease ) September 12, 2012 – Following a life-saving mastectomy procedure, many women will opt for breast reconstruction surgery to restore the appearance of natural-looking breasts. While some assume that breast implants are their only option, New York’s Dr. Mihye Choi is reporting a growing new trend in reconstructive surgery: more women choosing “DIEP flap” breast reconstruction.

“Today’s breast reconstruction patient is exploring her options,” explains Dr. Choi. “Where implants were the only real option in the past, medicine now affords us a cutting-edge and beneficial alternative: reconstructing a breast using a woman’s own tissue.” Professionally known as “autologous tissue-based breast reconstruction,” during this type of procedure a flap of the patient’s own skin is transported to the breast area.

“Now, when it comes to a flap procedure, DIEP reconstruction is quickly becoming the gold standard in the industry,” reports Dr. Choi. “During the procedure, a patient’s own skin and fat from the lower abdomen is transferred to the mastectomy site.” A revised version of the TRAM flap procedure, DIEP – which stands for deep inferior epigastric perforator – preserves the abdominal muscles, transferring only skin and fat.

“As one of the most requested procedures today, a DIEP flap reconstruction also offers several important advantages,” explains Dr. Choi. “These include unparalleled, natural-looking results, less risk of hernia, and less maintenance than breast implants.” Known in the industry as specialists in DIEP flap procedures, Dr. Choi and her colleague, Dr. Nolan Karp, incorporate cutting-edge technology in the preoperative planning of this surgery. This includes 3D breast imaging and CT angiography to define the blood vessel anatomy.

“What’s more, because a DIEP procedure is so precise, very few practices offer it, despite its many benefits,” explains Dr. Choi. “That’s just part of what sets KCNY apart.” Asked to speculate on the importance of this leading-edge procedure, Dr. Choi concluded succinctly: “In the end, it’s all about the patient – and reconstruction provides women with a true sense of their return to health and well-being.”
