Shields Takes Readers on an Unforgettable Journey Into Loss and Love

What happens when you surrender and trust? This is the question central to Tim Shields’ first novel, “A Curious Year in the Great Vivarium Experiment.”

San Antonio, TX, USA – May 9, 2018 — On the morning of his thirty-sixth birthday, Thomas Furey finds himself alone and jobless. Devastated by the recent loss of his mother, he feels untethered, like he is falling into the depths of something he can’t describe. On a whim, he buys a one-way ticket to India. Possessed by fear, armed with hope, protected by naïveté, and guided by intention, when Thomas learns to operate in alignment with his true self, serendipity intervenes.

Taking inspiration from his own life and travels, Shields says, “After a decade bookended by sick and dying parents, I decided to set out to try and uncover what I’ve always called my ‘soul ache.” He adds, “I think each of us has our own soul ache, and whether we are conscious of it or not, it’s one of the central drivers of our life.”

As Thomas journeys all over Southeast Asia for a year, he learns about becoming a man in the shadow of his parent’s death, surrendering his past and trusting the future that is pulling him forward, and the power of gratitude and intention to shape his reality.

“This book is about overcoming the self, that voice in our head that’s not loving or kind to us. Beyond that, there’s a much deeper philosophy at play about the nature of reality and the role of consciousness to shape it.” Shields adds with laughter, “It’s kind of like a ‘Portrait of the Artist’ as a middle-aged, spiritual man. Thomas is an artist searching for his voice and a writer searching for his story.”

“Sitting on the mountain, it occurred to me that traveling was a lot like writing,” says the protagonist. “When you sit down to write, you have no idea where you’ll be when you get to the end. Sometimes the journey is joyful, sometimes it’s terrifying, and sometimes it reduces you to tears of gratitude or despair. And sometimes the most fantastic, serendipitous events get you to the next chapter when you simply do the work, stay open to ideas, and follow where they lead you.”

As publisher Lisa Michelle Umina observes, “We are releasing this book at a time when, more than ever before, people are inquiring about the nature of our existence. This book challenges readers to find their own answers and seek their own stories.”

Shields’ nephew and godson, Jack Shields, created an original musical score for the book’s theatrical trailer. This collaboration led to the creation of an original soundtrack for the book, which is currently being shopped around to record labels. To view the book trailer and for more information, visit the book’s website: www.acuriousyear.com.

The book is now available globally at Halo Publishing International, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and Books a Million in Hardcover for $26.95, in Paperback for $19.95, and as an e-Book for $9.99.

Linda A. Goodlin Delves into Immigrant Past, Conveys Important Message for Today

It was over a hundred years ago that her grandparents immigrated to the United States, but Linda A. Goodlin knew their story was a compelling one she had to share.

San Antonio, TX (USA), April 5, 2018 — It was over a hundred years ago that her grandparents immigrated to the United States, but Linda A. Goodlin knew their story was a compelling one she had to share. Intrigued by their journey and experiences, Goodlin began researching her hometown, Rocktown, Pennsylvania.

This research became the basis for her debut historical fiction, “From Across the Pond,” that chronicles the trials and tribulations of a young couple who have come to live in the United States from their homeland of Wales.

“My grandfather really did come from Wales,” Goodlin says, “He lived in the coal mining town where the story takes place, and he worked in the coal mines there. He died from black lung before they ever put him on any kind of government funding for coal miners with black lung.”

From her own upbringing and conversations with family members, Goodlin knew about the challenges new arrivals to this country faced.“There were a great, diverse group of immigrants. Unfortunately, the coal mines weren’t the greatest place to work. It was a hard job and many men died.”

Goodlin’s own career has presented challenges of a different nature. She had her first child at the age of fifteen, at a time when her high school would not allow pregnant women to attend school. However, she returned to complete her GED, and she is now an inspirational speaker for women, in addition to being an author.

She uses her story to convey a powerful message. Illustrating the barriers between immigrants who spoke different languages and came from different countries and cultures, Goodlin demonstrates how the challenges of the new continent would bring everyone together. She writes, “When a disaster signal goes out, everyone in the town comes running, each woman praying it isn’t her man down there… At times like this, they do not look at each other as Polish, Irish, English, or German. They are neighbors caring about each other. All prejudices are put aside for the time being.”

“My main goal was to talk about how rich our country became through these immigrants who came and worked,” Goodlin says, but the reality for many new arrivals was harsh. “They came to a land being promised so much more than they had in their home country, but they often didn’t receive what they were being promised.”

Oftentimes, a strong work ethic was the only thing that enabled immigrants to be successful. But they faced great challenges as well. “Goodlin recounts a detailed narrative of our country’s past, but the drama that the main characters are facing will resonate with today’s generation and generations to come,” says publisher Lisa Umina.

Goodlin spent a year researching and writing the book from 2007 to 2008, as a part of a two-year writing class offered by prominent Christian author, Jerry B. Jenkins. The class gave Goodlin the impetus to launch her writing career; after completing an assignment to write a query letter to several magazines, she was hired as a writer for Guide Magazine. “From Across the Pond” is her first novel, and she is currently working on her second book.

The book launch event will be held at Scottdale Public Library in Scottdale, Pennsylvania on April 26th, from 6-8pm.

“From Across the Pond” is now available at Halo Publishing International, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, and Books a Million in Paperback for $16.95 and as an e-Book for $7.98.

Local Author Touches Children in the Aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria

When speaking with Terry Padilla, author of “Latin American Foods,” it is clear early on how very important family is in her life.

Miami, FL (USA), March 29th, 2018 — When speaking with Terry Padilla, author of “Latin American Foods,” it is clear early on how very important family is in her life. Her two-year labor of love titled “Latin American Foods” is a children’s book that follows the journey of the Garcia family who were forced to leave their homeland of Puerto Rico due to devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The family relocates to Orlando and as they adjust to the many changes in their lives, the Garcia family embraces their native Latin culture.

“When faced with unexpected challenges ones first reaction is usually to hold onto what’s dear to them,” said Padilla. “I wanted to emphasize the closeness of family and how the Garcia’s took comfort in the culinary experiences of their native Latin culture as they embarked on their new life in America.”

Terry’s multi-cultural background and her experiences living in Central America inspired her to write “Latin American Foods.”

While growing up in Managua, she witnessed people without food, shelter and clothing. Those images are still fresh in her mind today and provided added inspiration for her book.

“Basic necessities such as water, food and shelter, should never be taken for granted,” said Padilla. “And Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey were a reminder to all of us of how important these basic necessities are to one’s survival.”

“Latin American Foods” was illustrated by Tony Mendoza, a Cuban-American artist who Terry had met a few years ago while attending the Coconut Grove Art Festival. She was so impressed by his work that she immediately asked him to illustrate her book with the hope that her words combined with his whimsical illustrations would offer youngsters easy to understand descriptions of some of the dishes that the two of them were all too familiar with as children.

As the book was nearing completion, life for many changed dramatically! Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Florida, the Caribbean and, tragically Puerto Rico. These hurricanes inspired Terry to rewrite the story and incorporate a fictional family, Jose and Maria Garcia and their son Carlos, who owned a bed and breakfast in Puerto Rico. Maria Garcia is originally from Cuba, and loved to cook traditional dishes.

Depicting old clothes hanging to dry in the background when referencing Ropa Vieja or including an iron on the Cuban sandwich illustration since it is traditionally pressed with a hot iron are just a few of the images that stimulate the readers’ imagination.

Terry remembers the time when she asked Tony to draw a beautiful, colorful rooster with wild feathers and have the rooster painting. While puzzled by the request Tony complied, creating Terry’s favorite illustration that represents a dish she remembers all too well as a child growing up in Nicaragua, Gallo Pinto (rice and beans). She wanted to depict the rooster painting because gallo means rooster and pinto is a spotted rooster.

Born and raised in Managua, Nicaragua, Terry moved to Miami as a teen and attended Coral Gables High School. She graduated from the University of Florida’s School of Journalism & Communications earning a bachelor’s degree in Advertising with a minor in Business Administration.

Her book, “Latin American Foods” is dedicated to her husband Ivan, a fantastic cook and her father, who was the Secretary of Agriculture in Nicaragua during the 1970s. Terry resides in Miami, Florida with her husband and two children. She previously served on the board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida for 10 years and currently volunteers her time and energy with the Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness. Terry is a 12-year Breast Cancer survivor!

The book is available for $12.95 paperback and $7.99 Kindle on Amazon and Barnes and Nobles. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness. You can contact Terry Sendelmann-Padilla at 786-281-3737 or via e-mail at terryinmiami@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

New Children’s Book “Forever Evergreen” Takes Readers on an Adventure to Learn About Forgiveness

In her debut children’s book, “Forever Evergreen,” Kay Roberts tells the compelling story of Red, an adventurous sparrow who dares to leave his home in search of adventure.

San Antonio, TX (USA), March 29th, 2018 — In her debut children’s book, “Forever Evergreen,” Kay Roberts tells the compelling story of Red, an adventurous sparrow who dares to leave his home in search of adventure. Red finds unexpected allies along the way, as he navigates the Enchanted Forest. However, when trouble befalls him, Red must rely on the help of his new friends if he ever wants to make it back home. When Mother Nature intervenes, the entire forest is affected by her decision.

Roberts takes readers on an unforgettable journey, imparting valuable life lessons about forgiveness, hope, and compassion. The book is brought to life with vivid illustrations by KimSponaugle.

While developing the six main characters, Roberts was inspired by her own grandchildren, using their traits to craft her characters. “Each character evolved. The main character, Red, takes after my grandson who is an adventurous type and a free-thinking individual.”

The storyline began as an oral tale that Roberts first heard from her husband who grew up in an orphanage. “One evening we were talking about childhood memories, and he said he remembered somebody telling him a little story about a bird getting hurt and a fir tree picking him up and caring for him.” After she heard the story, Roberts waited for a while but eventually, she knew she had to put her versiondown on paper.

“I am so glad to have this story as a part of our spring collection,” says publisher, Lisa Umina. “This is a fun and engaging way for children to learn about how their actions can have unexpected consequences.”

The author’s hope is for children to use this book to spark their imagination. “I would love to get this story in the hands of children and have them go on a journey with the book, too. I love when children use their imagination. If they can think beyond, if they can let their mind wander, that’s what I would love.”

Roberts says that writing and publishing a book is a dream that she had since she was in the fifth grade. She has inspirational advice for readers: “I want everybody to know, no matter how old you are, if you have a dream, go for it! You’re never too old to do what you really want to do.”

“Forever Evergreen” is now available at Halo Publishing International, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and Books a Million in Hardcover for $19.98 and as an e-Book for $7.98.

Powerful Children’s Book Supports Children of Incarcerated Parents

Dr. Dakota King-White is passionate about children succeeding and believes that all children can succeed if given the right tools and opportunities.

Cleveland, OH (USA), January 25, 2018 — Dr. Dakota King-White is passionate about children succeeding and believes that all children can succeed if given the right tools and opportunities. According to the Pew Report published in 2013, there are more than 2.7 million children in the United States who have one parent currently serving time in prison. While conducting research in K-12 schools, Dr. King-White encountered a number of children who were suffering from parental incarceration and discovered the importance of providing them with an opportunity to communicate how that experience made them feel. It was from this research that she wrote her first children’s book “Oh No! When a Parent Goes Away.”

“This is a difficult subject to talk about and therefore unless we purposefully set out to help youth share their feelings, their reactions get bottled up and begin to emerge in unhealthy ways,” said Dr. King-White. “Oh No! When a Parent Goes Away” is an interactive book schools, parents, caregivers, counselors, agencies, and court systems can use to help guide children through the experience of sharing their emotions, either through pictures or words.

“My hope is that this book will provide a tool for families and schools to work with children while giving them a safe place to process their emotions,” said Dr. King-White. By using this book with children who have a parent in jail, they have an opportunity to recognize that the emotions they feel are in fact, quite normal. It is normal to be sad or anxious, fearful or angry and through the journal prompts within the book, children are encouraged to express their feelings. “When children who have a parent incarcerated don’t have a vehicle for verbalizing their feelings, they can become sullen or angry,” said Dr. King-White.

“Oh No! When a Parent Goes Away” is designed for elementary school-age students, six to 12 years old. Dr. King-White is also the co-founder of Making A Difference Consulting and is currently working on her follow-up book designed for teens in middle school and high school who are also struggling to come to terms with parental incarceration.

“Oh No! When a Parent Goes Away” is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon and Barnes and Noble, in paperback for $19.95 and as an e-book for $9.99.

About Dr. Dakota King-White:
Dr. Dakota King-White has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Counseling, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision. She has done extensive research on the impact of parental incarceration on children and the psychological, emotional, and behavioral effects of incarceration. Through her research, she has designed a group counseling curriculum for the children of incarcerated parents, which has been implemented in K-12 education. She has also designed a mental health model that is used in K-12 education to help address the mental health needs of students within the academic setting. The model utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to address mental health needs within schools. Dr. King-White is passionate about children succeeding and believes that ALL children can succeed if given the right tools and opportunities.

“The Boy Who Couldn’t Be Seen” Provides Hope for Marginalized Children

Being a child no one wants is a horrible position for any youngest, especially the young boy in first time author, Michael Joffoy’s book “The Boy Who Couldn’t Be Seen.”

Denver, CO (USA), January 20, 2018 — Being a child no one wants is a horrible position for any youngest, especially the young boy in first time author, Michael Joffoy’s book “The Boy Who Couldn’t Be Seen.” Abandoned by his parents and mistreated by his relatives, the young boy of Joffoy’s book is lonely, angry and desperate for the family life he sees his friends living. As a result of his upbringing, he makes questionable life choices, suffering the consequences until, through the help of a church recovery program, God enters his life and brings him hope for a new tomorrow.

“This story is one that I lived,” admits author Michael Joffoy. “I wish I had spoken up and asked for help but I didn’t understand that there were people willing to offer hope to me and so I suffered alone, my only companion my cat Pepper who followed me everywhere.”

The story and illustrations depict a harsh reality for young Michael until he encounters members of a local church through a recovery program. Through their kindness and generosity, he learns about the value in serving others and created this book as a way of reaching other marginalized children who can so easily be lost in the fray.

“My hope is that children who are experiencing similar situations will read my book and find hope,” said Joffoy. “And hopefully teachers, parents and caregivers who read this story will understand the important role they play in the nurturing of young children.”

The Boy Who Couldn’t Be Seen” is written and illustrated by Joffoy and is a testimony to his faith in God and in the ability for those who struggle to have second chances at a loving and fulfilled life. Joffoy’s book Is already making a difference in reader’s lives.

Lee D Preston, an Amazon reader and reviewer has this to say:
“This book is an excellent book for those working through emotional abuse and history of neglect. Although it is written through the eyes of a child, it is intuitively helpful for adults as they get in touch with their own wounding and hurt. I recommend this book as a healing source for anyone who’s going through the trauma of childhood abuse and neglect and wants healing.”

“I admire Michael for his willingness to share his past and to offer hope and healing to readers, young and old,” said Lisa Umina, founder and president of Halo Publishing International. “I believe this is an important book for children who are suffering but also for all children so that parents can begin the discussions of speaking up and asking for help when necessary.”

“The Boy Who Couldn’t Be Seen”is now available at Halo Publishing, Amazon and Barnes and Noble, inhard cover for $21.95, in paperback for $11.95 and as an e-book for $9.99.
