Choose Renewable Energy as Your New Year’s Resolution

January 7, 2011 – Ahead of Christmas and the start of a brand new year, millions of us are weakly formulating a New Year’s resolution that invariably consists of gym

memberships, nicotine patches and frankly numerous intentions that fall apart in February.

But this year, how about doing something a little different by pledging to go eco-friendly and investing in renewable energy? Not only will you be doing your bit for

the environment, but your renewable energy investment will also pay for itself over time via savings on your energy bills. And did you know that there are various
energy grants available to help you get started?

Renewable energy is available in many forms, which type would suit you best?

Wind Energy

This can be captured through the installation of domestic or commercial wind turbines which convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity, and this power can

then be used to provide the electricity requirements of your home or commercial property.

Solar Energy

Solar energy comes purely from the sun through solar panels – of which there are two main types. Solar thermal panels are used for central heating and hot running

water, whilst solar PV panels are used to generate electricity.

Heat Energy

Natural heat energy sourced from the ground (geothermal) is a popular solution across numerous Scandinavian and European countries as the renewable energy source for

ground source heat pumps. An alternative option, air source heat pumps can derive heat

energy from the ambient air temperature whilst water source heat pumps can be connected to a nearby water source.

Biomass Energy

Biomass energy is generated through the burning of materials such as wood pellets, wood chip, wood logs, wood shavings, any other organic, renewable materials or even

plant crops such as miscanthus (elephant grass).

Hydro Energy

Hydro power is one of the oldest forms of renewable energy, generating power from the movement of water. In perhaps its most common form, water is moved through

turbines located in dams to generate energy, which is renewable, as the water can be reused or returned to its natural state once the energy has been created.
