SportsMark’s information services team determined that they required a rapid OS and encryption deployment ready for a highly mobile and diverse workforce to securing log in onto any of their laptops at any of the locations.

“WinMagic SecureDoc was clearly the answer to our requirements,” said Scott Shuemake, systems engineer at SportsMark. “We needed an encryption solution that we could quickly and easily implement, manage centrally and provide all temporary staff with access to all the devices, so we had the flexibility to move staff around the hospitality venues across London, sometimes at short notice.”

SportsMark Group has contracted 1000 temporary hospitality event staff to work for the duration of Olympic and Paralympic Games in more than 15 pop-up offices around central London. These staff will be supplied with rented laptops that require the hard drive to be fully encrypted.

The technical solution consisted of 300 temporary licenses of WinMagic SecureDoc and SecureDoc Enterprise Server to install the SecureDoc packages and provide recovery. SportsMark also utilized WinMagic consultancy services to ensure the smoothest and quickest deployment in the fastest possible timeframe. At the end of the project, SportsMark will take advantage of SecureDoc’s Crypto erase feature to decommission the devices used for the event.

Smoking, Obesity And Lack Of Activity Named As Global Killers

Research published in leading medical journal The Lancet suggests that a lack of exercise can be as big a killer as obesity and smoking.

According to the study, approximately one third of adults do not do a healthy amount of exercise, and it is suggested that this could be causing 5.3 million deaths worldwide each year – the equivalent of one in ten deaths – from related illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Nutritionist Caron Leckie, who works for the UK’s largest provider of chef prepared meals and delivered diets, Diet Chef, comments: “In my experience the weather has a big impact on activity levels, certainly in the UK, and many people use it as an excuse to stay indoors and watch television, rather than getting out and about.

“In addition to this, thousands of our customers have jobs which see them sitting down at a desk for up to nine hours each day. It is logical that this sedentary lifestyle can be conducive to obesity.”

Ms Leckie also added that Diet Chef is “working hard to help people to lose weight with our calorie-controlled diet” and that as a company they are also “working closely with a personal trainer to offer advice and tips on how to move more, no matter what your age, weight or health status.”

It is recommended that adults should do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, this equates to just over 20 minutes per day.

According to a report by the BBC, “researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic”.

Cuts to SNAP Food Program Would Be Devastating for Struggling Older Adults

This morning, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) joined members of Congress, Feeding America, the Food Research and Action Center, advocates, and representatives from dozens of national organizations to oppose $16 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, (SNAP). Washington, D.C., USA – July 12, 2012 — This morning, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) joined members of Congress, Feeding America, the Food Research and Action Center, advocates, and representatives from dozens of national organizations to oppose $16 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) included in the proposed House Agriculture Committee Farm Bill reauthorization. The Committee is expected to vote on the legislation tomorrow.

Nearly 3 million older adults receive SNAP, and 80% of them live alone. SNAP makes nutritious food more affordable for these vulnerable seniors, reducing health costs by helping them manage and prevent chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Yet, due to inadequate outreach and enrollment, only 1 in 3 seniors who qualifies for SNAP actually receives this valuable benefit.

“These cuts would be catastrophic for vulnerable older adults and their families,” said NCOA President & CEO Jim Firman. “93% of SNAP benefits go to households below the poverty line, and 76% of SNAP households include an elderly person, child, or disabled person. Taking food out of the mouths of people living at or near the poverty level is unconscionable act, especially when the unemployment rate is so high.”

In addition to keeping individuals safe and well-fed, SNAP is a well-established and efficient way to stimulate local economies. Every $1 worth of SNAP benefits in an eligible recipient’s pocket turns into a $1.73 benefit to local communities via grocery stores, farm stands, or even Wal-Mart. Without SNAP and other federal benefits, millions of vulnerable older adults will be forced to make a grim choice between buying groceries or filling prescriptions; putting food on the table or paying utility bills.

NCOA is encouraging older adults, their families, and caregivers to call on Congress to oppose these drastic cuts. Concerned advocates can call toll-free 1-877-698-8228 today to be connected to their Representative’s office and ask them to vote NO on proposed SNAP cuts in the Farm Bill.

Center for Productive Longevity Urges People to Shed Negative Stereotypes About Older Age

Organization Wants People to Embrace the Opportunities that Come with Longer Lives

Boulder, CO, June 20, 2012 – As people continue to live longer and retire earlier, the term “Third-Stage Adulthood” has more relevance than ever before. Referring to people 62-85 years old, this stage of life is chock-full of senior workers who are qualified and ready to continue working after the traditional retirement age of 65 or sooner. This means that there is a large and growing talent pool with experience, expertise, seasoned judgment, and proven performance (referred to by CPL as EESP), to meet the workforce needs of the 21st century.

The concept of “Third-Stage Adulthood” was first conceived in a paper, “The Evolution of Adulthood: A New Stage” co-authored in 2000 by Dr. Elliott Jaques, who conceived the mid-life crisis in 1965, and CPL Founder and CEO William Zinke. Zinke created CPL, which is based in Boulder, Colorado, to stimulate the substantially increased engagement of people 55 and older in productive activities, paid and volunteer, where they are qualified and ready to continue adding value.

Now in 2012, the concept of Third-Stage Adulthood is even more important than when the term was coined. CPL urges everyone to recalibrate their thinking for this new reality because the results could be dire if action isn’t taken. If Baby Boomers are pushed to the sidelines, the nation’s entitlement programs (e.g. Social Security and Medicare) will become unsustainable even sooner than projected. To prevent this crisis, the country should tap the talent pool of retired workers in Third-Stage Adulthood and put their knowledge, skills and abilities to use.

“Embracing ‘Third-Stage Adulthood’ can be a positive life-changer as people enter this next phase,” says William Zinke, 85. “The concept urges society to recognize that older people can continue to add value for significantly longer periods of time and that they should be viewed as individuals, instead of all being lumped under the clichés of being ‘over the hill’ and ‘out of the game.’ The result will be that millions of older people with EESP can continue contributing to, instead of drawing from, the national economy and society.”

CPL subscribes to a concept of adulthood that falls into three stages, described as follows:

First stage of early adulthood (18-40) – the time to build experience and expertise; to decide whether to work in the private, public, or non-profit sectors and perhaps even gain some cross-sector experience; to decide whether to develop a career in a company or to become an entrepreneur; to focus on the development of particular skills and abilities; to build a solid foundation for the next two adult stages.

Second stage of mid-adulthood (40-62) – the time when experience and expertise produce problem- solving capabilities and sound judgment (CPL likes the saying that good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment) and perhaps even the beginnings of wisdom. Any mid-life crises have been traversed and assurance and self-confidence have become more firmly established as a result of learning how to function more effectively. There is also continuing growth and development during this stage.

New-stage of mature adulthood (62-85) – the time when many individuals, although not all (e.g. people who have been engaged primarily in physical labor, who have not maintained a commitment to physical fitness, or who have debilities or disabilities), can continue to be significant contributors. They have had about 40 years to gain experience and expertise, to develop seasoned judgment and proven records of performance and to build their intellectual and social capital. While documented research indicates that cognitive capability may have plateaued for some, the intellectual growth curve continues to move upward for people who have continued to remain productively engaged.

CPL launched the Later-Life Story Contest on June 1 to solicit empowering stories from people 55 and older. The competition has two separate categories: Entrepreneur Success Stories and Inspirational Later-Life Stories. A panel of three independent judges will select one winner from each category who will receive $1,000 and a specially designed trophy. CPL will post the best stories on its website (ctrpl.org) throughout the contest under “Success Stories.” The contest runs through August 31, and winners will be announced on October 1, 2012.

To submit a story, visit www.ctrpl.org/laterlifestorycontest and complete a submission form. Entrants must be at least 55, have a compelling story to share, and be willing to have it posted on the CPL website for viewing and for possible publication. Bollywood in centenary glory, rare Hindi film clips

Bollywood, one of the largest film production centres in the world, turns hundred years in 2012. To mark this historic occasion, www.indiavideo.org has launched a year-long celebration which will take the viewers to the key moments in the momentous journey of Hindi Cinema. The project is supported by Culture Shoppe, an online cultural gift shop, and Mulamoottil Eye Hospital, a leading super specialty eye hospital.

The special centenary gallery on the website and its YouTube channel www.youtube.com/indiavideodotorghas already become a big hit among Bollywood fans spread across the world.

As part of the centenary fete, www.indiavideo.org is featuring 365 movies carefully chosen to represent the history of Bollywood. Here you could watch some all-time hit movies, some trend setters in story telling and techniques, movies through which some ordinary men and women rose to stardom and many more.

Clippings of the selected movies are presented along with a brief talk on the specialties and historical aspects of the film. The nearly two-minute movie will have the best moments in a film.

The movies were chosen by researcher and columnist Vijay Kumar Balakrishnan who has been exploring Bollywood for the past 40 years. He is also an avid collector of Bollywood posters, gramophone records, song books, vintage films etc. Eminent Kathak dancer and social activist Pali Chandra is the anchor.
