Pensioners Suffering As The Money Runs Out, Says Debt Solutions Company Trust Deed Scotland

A new report reveals that pensioners across the UK are being left penniless as their money disappears every week in a whirlwind of bills, says Debt Solutions Company, Trust Deed Scotland.

An income of £207.15 per week is typical for most pensioned couples, but a report by Standard Life shows it goes straight back out the door as £207.24 is spent on food, fuel, housing and transport.

The report highlights rising inflation as the reason why the average pensioner has difficulties making ends and are being hit hard – many are having issues even affording a new pair of shoes, a holiday or a present for a grandchild.

While the Consumer Price Index remained the same in September at 4.5%, the Retail Price Index was hovering at 5.2% and threatening to rise again. Pensioner have a fixed income that doesn’t change from month to month, and that combined with inflation and large energy rises from utilities companies means turn some have turned towards credit cards to make ends meet.

A spokesperson for Scottish Debt Solutions Company, Trust Deed Scotland, said:
“According to Age UK, British pensioners are the fourth poorest in Europe, with the worst off set to lose up to 22% of their household income because of cuts to local authority services and changes to the tax and benefits system. This report highlights the dire position our parents and grandparents are in. At a time when they should be relaxing after a lifetime of working, they are pinching pennies and worrying about what the future will hold for them.”

The day before Standard Life published its report, the Institute of Fiscal Studies issued a warning about how ‘real’ inflation was hitting pensioners much harder than younger age groups.

“The Insolvency Service reported the fastest rising group of people claiming insolvency is pensioners,” said the spokesperson. “They are six times more likely to go bankrupt or take out a debt solution such as a Scottish Trust Deed or Debt Arrangement Schemethan they were just a decade ago. The number of people entering retirement with unpaid debts has increased, and when combined with increased life expectancy, the recession and limited options to increase income when you retire, it adds up to a lot of older people in real trouble”.

According to the Consumer Credit Counseling Service the average unsecured debt of newly retired pensioners is £21,370 and few have any savings at all. Once all the bills have been covered, there’s just £85 left at the end of the month.

“There are numerous reasons why pensioners are entering retirement in debt,” said the spokesperson. “Previous good house values led to many people remortgaging for home improvements or to loan to children or grand children for house deposits. There’s also the issue of divorce, where one partner will often buy the other out of their share of the property by extending their mortgage. And then some people are marrying and having families much later in life or having second families in their fifties.”

“For many life as a retiree in today’s world is just as expensive as it was when they were working, but now they have less income to live on.”

UK Tourists Booking Car Hire Earlier This Christmas Says eRentals.co.uk

Online car hire specialist eRentals.co.uk has reported that Brits are booking Christmas car hire earlier than ever this year. The website, which helps travellers source car hire in over 12,000 locations around the world, this week reports that advance booking for Christmas is up by 38% with around six weeks still to go.

Historically, travellers have tended to see car rental as an optional extra and something which can be left until the last minute says eRentals.co.uk. This year however, the website is seeing many more tourists plan ahead and book car hire well before travelling.

eRentals.co.uk also reports that this year’s most popular Christmas car hire collection points throughout Europe are Geneva, Heathrow Airport, Lisbon, Faro and Manchester Airport. Many Brits head away overseas during the festive season to spend Christmas with relatives.

Briony Fairbairn, spokesperson for eRentals.co.uk, says: “Traditionally Brits have a habit of waiting until they arrive somewhere before finding car hire, or at best booking a few days before they travel. This year seems to have seen a change in behaviour.”

“At Christmas each year car hire providers see increased demand for family vehicles like 4x4s and people carriers, so booking ahead is essential. The same applies to added extras like child seats, waiting until arrival in a resort before asking about them can result in disappointment. So this year’s rise in people booking ahead is a refreshing change and these people will have a more enjoyable car hire experience.”

eRentals.co.uk is a specialist car hire company, providing low cost car rental in over 12,000 locations around the World. Committed to finding its customers the best prices, eRentals.co.uk offers a quick and easy search of the latest offers, including Majorca car hire and Lanzarote car hire, for a festive escape in the sun.

UK Drivers Risking Road Safety by Cost-Cutting Says Latest Carrentals.co.uk Research

Carrentals.co.uk, the car hire comparator which helps people save on rentals in over 15,000 destinations around the world, has announced the results of a new road safety poll. The website surveyed more than 2,300 UK drivers and discovered that 1 in 3 choose not to have their vehicle serviced due to expense and 1 in 5 have not had bald or worn tyres replaced ahead of winter.

The poll also showed that 1 in 10 motorists have changed from comprehensive to third-party car insurance to save money while pre-winter car servicing and checks are also being neglected; 60% of people have saved money on not getting tyres checked while 80% haven’t had their brakes checked either.

Changing brake pads regularly is usually considered a car maintenance essential, but 10% of respondents told Carrentals.co.uk that they have not done so recently to save money.

Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: “The results of our latest survey were somewhat concerning, as road safety is simply so important particularly in winter. We understand that people need to make cutbacks wherever possible but we don’t advise skimping on vehicle maintenance.”

“British winters are typically hazardous on the roads and ice causes many accidents every year. With that in mind we want people to consider where else they can make savings rather than neglecting their car’s safety, something which puts themselves and others at risk.”

The Carrentals.co.uk poll also found that almost 1 in 3 people have traded their car in for a cheaper to maintain model in recent times, while more than 56% now visit an independent garage for car servicing in place of more costly authorised places.

Traditional car rescue cover has also suffered as a result of the financial crisis according to the new Carrentals.co.uk survey. 1 in 10 people have cancelled car rescue contracts and 3% of people confessed to driving without insurance due to the costs of policies these days.

“People clearly need to make cutbacks wherever possible these days, and we understand that entirely, Gareth went on. “However that is not to say that we condone neglecting road safety. Car maintenance is essential, especially with icy weather on the way, so we urge people to look for other ways to save money this winter.”

The award winning Carrentals.co.uk is the leading car hire comparison site comparing the best deals from up to 50 rental companies, including Alamo, Auto Europe, Budget, Holiday Autos and Sixt. Travellers can rent a car in over 15,000 locations around the world, including car hire in Tenerife, and car hire in Lanzarote for a winter sun escape.

Magazine Subscriptions Demystify Online Shopping

Forrester research indicates that, by the end of 2011, Americans will spend around $200 billion in online purchases. They also predict that by the year 2015, U.S. retail sales will well surpass the $275 billion mark. This growth in ecommerce is being attributed to existing shoppers pushing their online shopping boundaries by purchasing more items off the World Wide Web like home appliances and furniture in addition to increasing spending in traditionally popular online shopping categories such as books and media. Also driving the numbers are consumers who are turning to the internet as a shopping resource for the very first time.

Print magazine publishers are looking to be a part of this dynamic and rapidly expanding online retail marketplace. By partnering with various online retail sites, popular discount magazines which are available as low cost, promotional subscriptions and have over the years cultivated a loyal readership base, will be able to avail their readers of opportunities to buy items featured within their publications via online sales portals.

Magazine aficionados who hold their magazine subscriptions dear will find the explorations being made by publishers to harmonize print magazine content with online retail sites advantageous. Magazine lovers need not renounce their love for the printed periodical but can use it instead as a trusted guide to chaperone them through their online shopping experience. Magazines and cheap magazine subscriptions will become especially invaluable tools for all consumers who feel intimidated when purchasing items from the internet or who have heretofore felt reluctant to shop online.

In recent years, many publications have shifted their focus from print to digital magazines, in some cases completely revamping their online presence. While some have found great success in the switch, making the entire magazine available online, while others have struggled to get footholds in the online arena opting to only post specific content from the current issue. In either case, the content is usually free, which leads to the other problem: whether or not online magazines are profitable from a business standpoint. The primary reason for this trepidation is that the internet is still considered an unstable marketing tool.

Magazine lovers however can enjoy a choice of online or print magazines and save on annual subscriptions, sometimes getting a whole year’s worth of magazines for the cost of just two or three at stand prices.

Scam Prevention Site Nears 150,000 Page View Marker

Craigslistscammer.blogspot.com, a blog dedicated to helping people unmask scammers who prey on Craigslist advertisers, will surpass 150,000 page views at the end of November.

Austin, TX (USA), Wednesday – November 16, 2011 — Craigslistscammer.blogspot.com, a blog dedicated to helping people unmask scammers who prey on Craigslist advertisers, will surpass 150,000 page views at the end of November, according to its publisher Joe Gimenez.

The site receives between 400-600 visits per day from people who search the email address or other information contained in correspondence they’ve received from a person responding to their advertisement on Craigslist.

Since its inception on May 4, 2008, the blog has received 140,100 pageviews and is projected to hit 150,000 on November 29. The site has more than 3,200 comments from viewers who either confirm that a scam was attempted on them or adds information about other scams in their posts.

Typical comments might read like this one: “drjamesrobbert08@gmail.com posing as Melinda Robbert responded to a craigslist ad I posted for video tutor for daughter, sent two checks for almost $3K each, from two different addresses and two different banks, with instructions to take out my portion ($250)and send the rest by Western Union to the daughter’s nanny in Florida. I am in Maryland. So red flags went off left and right. I googled the nanny’s address and called to find no nanny at that address. Sent an email to “Melinda” and asked her to phone me. ‘She’ responded by telling me that she ‘has a little problem with her phone.’ Uh-huh . . . ”

Or this posting by a reader: “Add JohnWeb234@gmail.com to your list of scammers. The person just contacted me about sending his dog to board with me for the month of December using exactly the same MO [modus operandi] as with the tutor inquiries.”

The blog site started as Gimenez’s reaction to a scammer who was responding to his advertising a white couch for sale. The scammer said they’d send their movers to pick it up and that he was sending a check by FedEx.

When the check arrived, things started to seem a bit more fishy and then the scam really began. The check was $4,000 greater than the amount agreed upon for the couch and the scammer emailed to say that his secretary made the mistake, would Gimenez kindly deposit the check and wire the overage back to a Western Union address, less $100 for the inconvenience.

Gimenez’ reaction was “I mean really, who has a secretary these days and is looking on Craigslist for items.”

Upon further research, Gimenez found newspaper articles that described the exact same scam – the check was fraudulent, but close enough to real that his own bank would have credited his account and sent it out for delivery. Then, when the bank found, maybe two weeks later, the check to be fraudulent they would charge Gimenez’s account for the amount that he had wired out. The scammer would have received those funds and been long gone, but Gimenez would be out the money. You can read about the original scam attempt and Gimenez’ reaction here.

“Thank God I Googled something in that check that was already on the web,” Gimenez said. “And thank God so many people have responded in the same way over the years so that they might not fall for this evil trick.”

“Craigslist is very good about warning people about these sorts of scams, but few people understand why the warning is necessary or how they can be scammed. This site seeks to get the Craigslist scammers through the combined effort of thousands of people and its working,” Gimenez said.

The name of the blog is Let’s Get the Craigslist Scammers.

Parcel Couriers Make Preparations For Festive Rush

Couriers with services available through online parcel delivery firm Parcel2Go are making their final preparations ahead of the Christmas season.

Thousands of Christmas shoppers came to rely on courier services last year when severe weather conditions around the UK made it look like many people would not be able to get their presents to friends and family members in time. This year, industry-leading firms such as UPS and FedEx are making preparations early in anticipation of a last minute rush.

Last month, courier specialist FedEx said it was expecting a 12 per cent year-on-year increase in the volume of goods handled worldwide between November 24 and Christmas Day, peaking at an estimated 17 million shipments on December 12. The rise in the number of packages being sent is said to be down to an increase in e-commerce, with more people feeling comfortable buying Christmas presents over the internet. To cope with the festive rush the company is employing an extra 20,000 seasonal staff.

International delivery firm UPS will employ an extra 55,000 seasonal staff across America. The company has predicted a late surge in demand as consumers leave it until the last minute to buy their presents over the internet. UPS believes its busiest day will be December 22, when it will handle about 26 million items worldwide.

Richard Mercer, marketing director at Parcel2Go, said: “It’s great news that our shipping partners are looking ahead and planning how to provide the best possible level of service to UK consumers over the Christmas period. It’s always a challenge at this time of year when shipping volumes peak, but Parcel2Go customers can rest assured that their items are in safe hands with our couriers.

“As the hard winter conditions that have hit the UK in recent years have shown us, planning ahead is always sensible. We’re calling on individuals and businesses to make sure they organise parcel deliveries as early as possible to ensure their packages arrive on time.”
