Bryant & Stratton College Named to List of Military Friendly Schools

Only 15 Percent of American Higher Education Institutions Awarded This Distinction in the 2013 List Released by Victory Media and G.I. Jobs Magazine

Buffalo, NY, September 24, 2012 – Bryant & Stratton College has been recognized once again by Victory Media and G.I. Jobs Magazine in the media group’s annual list of Military Friendly Schools. Only 15 percent of U.S. higher education institutions were named to the 2013 list, which honors the colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to advance the education of America’s military service members, veterans and families and their academic success. The list highlights schools with world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services for students that are active duty, veterans or family members of military.

The list was compiled from research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The rankings also incorporate a survey from more than 3,000 student veterans. This is the fourth year for the list, and each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard over the previous year. The survey results were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weights and methodology established by G.I. Jobs.

“We are proud to be recognized as a trusted education institution for many of our nation’s heroes. From military service members to veterans and their families, we strive to support those who have given so much in service to our country and we are dedicated to maintaining the best level of academics and services for our military,” said Lee Hicklin, the College’s Military Coordinator. “Our campuses offer a wide variety of resources to address the needs of these students, including the Salute to Spouses Scholarship, student veterans groups, military support staff, special programs and even a website for military spouses written by military spouses – www.salutetospouses.com.”

Bryant & Stratton College has a strong reputation with military service members, veterans and their families. Bryant & Stratton College has 18 campuses across New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin and offers programs nationwide through its Online Education division. For information about the specific resources and programs available to active duty service members, veterans and family members of the military at each of its campus locations, visit www.bryantstratton.edu for contact information.

StudyAbroad.com Releases Results of New Survey; Findings Reveal Student Concerns, Market Growth Opportunities

Financial concerns continue to be the largest barrier to study abroad; while use of financial aid has increased, nearly one in five students still do not know that it is an option

Chester, PA, September 24, 2012 – Results of a recent survey from StudyAbroad.com uncovered the top decision factors, concerns and interests of prospective study abroad students. Additionally, the data revealed market growth opportunities among high school students and post-graduates, as well as areas study abroad providers can improve, such as communicating financial aid options and inquiry response time. The survey of 850 prospective study abroad students was conducted in August.

According to the survey, more than one in four respondents (27 percent) cited location as the most important factor when considering a study abroad program, followed by subject (24 percent), when the program took place (20 percent), duration (16 percent) and program format (13 percent). In terms of location, the study reports that nearly two thirds of the top 20 countries are in Europe, and five are English-speaking. The top five countries by student interest are England, Spain, France, Italy and Australia.

The research also found that though study abroad is still most popular with undergraduate students, nearly half of those interested in study abroad either haven’t been to college yet or have already graduated, suggesting a market growth opportunity. 20 percent of the students surveyed were in high school and 23 percent had already graduated college. Programs that tailor their approach to target these markets will be better positioned to respond to this opportunity.

“As the last few years have seen, international experience is increasingly attractive to employers, so more and more students – and at varying stages of their educational career – are interested in spending time abroad to gain a global perspective,” said Chuck DelCamp, product manager at StudyAbroad.com. “This survey highlights key trends and offers valuable intelligence to help study abroad providers better serve students, as well as identifies areas of opportunity.”

One area of opportunity lies in financial aid education. The survey showed that students are still most concerned about the costs of study abroad. Among those who self-identified that they were “still deciding” on a program, 62 percent listed price as their primary hesitation. However, the data also show that there is an information gap when it comes to available financial aid. Though more than two thirds of students said they planned to or already used financial aid to study abroad, 19 percent of students said they “didn’t know I could” use financial aid, when asked. There is still room to improve financial education and bridging the disconnect between student perception and the reality of paying for their study abroad experience.

Other decision-making factors that come into play when students decide where to study abroad include the program’s focus, housing, the provider’s reputation or internship opportunities. The survey also found that by directly connecting with students, program providers can help students overcome these concerns by providing additional information. 51 percent of students who chose study abroad said they had received a personal phone call, email or mailing and that timely correspondence was “very important.” The survey discovered that students who are contacted directly by a program after submitting an inquiry are 21 percent more likely to enroll in a study abroad program. This is an area where providers could improve their service by personally contacting students and offering relevant and timely information.

For more information about the study or for a copy of the report detailing the complete findings, contact Chuck DelCamp at cdelcamp@educationdynamics.com.

Veritas Prep Reveals the Five Biggest SAT Prep Mistakes

Students Preparing to Take the SAT Should Avoid These Common Errors

Malibu, California, September 10, 2012 – With summer coming to a close, high school students across the nation will shift their focus to the start of the school year. For many, that also means the college application process. One critical component of college admissions is a single test: the SAT. To help students prepare for the exam, Veritas Prep, the largest global provider of test prep and admissions consulting services, has outlined the five biggest SAT prep mistakes students should avoid.

Mistake #1: Assuming that high school English and math classes sufficiently prepare you for the SAT

Reality – The average high school curriculum is not structured to prep you for standardized college entrance exams. For example, how often in school are you tested on idioms and sentence completion or given a multiple choice algebra test? The answer: almost never. But SAT questions are written that way. To excel on the exam, students must prepare specifically for the SAT.

Mistake #2: Thinking that completing an SAT prep course is all you need to do to achieve optimal results on the SAT

Reality – There is no quick and easy path to a high SAT score – to achieve the best possible results, students must be willing to put in significant time and effort to study for the test. While a prep course can offer a considerable edge by helping students learn SAT-specific strategies and techniques and build the skills the exam seeks to measure, seat time in a prep class is not enough. Students must apply the knowledge gained in an SAT prep course to solving sample questions, doing vocabulary-building exercises and taking practice tests.

Mistake #3: Preparing with third-party practice SAT questions

Reality – Students should prepare for the SAT using questions produced by the College Board, the organization that creates the exam. Official College Board practice tests are the most accurate and reliable practice materials available. Only the College Board can offer genuine SAT practice questions that are guaranteed to stay consistent with future SAT exams. Don’t settle for second-rate, third party practice questions. Students can download a free College Board SAT practice test on the Veritas Prep website.

Mistake #4: Looking at answer choices before coming up with your own solution

Reality – The SAT is designed to fool unsure students. Students can avoid this issue by physically covering answer choices from sight using their hand. This helps students avoid being enticed by incorrect answer choices that SAT test writers have created as traps. Instead, students should WYPAD™ (Write Your Personal Answer Down) prior to looking at the answer choices. This gives students a concrete answer to look for without being distracted.

Mistake #5: Maintaining a clean, pristine test booklet on practice tests and test day

Reality – Unfortunately, most students have been trained in their high school classes not to write on tests because teachers often reuse them multiple times. However, the SAT is one of the few standardized exams left that is not computerized, so students should take advantage of the paper-and-pencil nature of the test and use the booklet to cross out eliminated answers, work out problems and outline their thoughts on paper instead of trying to keep track of everything on memory alone.

“Students preparing to take the SAT have the benefit of learning from the mistakes of others who have tackled the test before them,” said Shaan Patel, Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep and one of the few test takers in the world to achieve a perfect 2400 on the SAT. “These five mistakes are the most common errors students make – by knowing what they are, students can avoid repeating them and can prepare more effectively for the SAT.”

Patel improved his SAT score from 1760 to a perfect 2400, earned more than $237,000 in scholarships and co-authored the Veritas Prep SAT 2400 program. Recently, McGraw-Hill published his book, “SAT 2400 in Just 7 Steps.”

Universal Companies Expands Operations to Milwaukee & announces Appointment of Ronn Johnson to Executive vice President of Education for Midwest Region

Universal Companies (Universal), founded by music mogul Kenneth Gamble, is a national non-profit community and housing development and education management organization which is headquartered in the city of Philadelphia, expands its operations to the city of Milwaukee and Midwest region.

Philadelphia, PA, Septemeber 08, 2012 – Universal Companies (Universal), founded by music mogul Kenneth Gamble, is a national non-profit community and housing development and education management organization which is headquartered in the city of Philadelphia, expands its operations to the city of Milwaukee and Midwest region.

In July 2012, Universal’s President/CEO, Rahim Islam, appointed Ronn Johnson to the position of Executive Vice President of Education for the Midwest Region. In this role, Johnson will provide the necessary leadership to expand Universal Family of Schools’ educational footprint in the cities of Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit. Working with the Milwaukee Public School District, Universal has begun the approval process and hopes to open its first charter school in Milwaukee in September 2013.

“We chose Milwaukee because it feels like home. It is similar in many ways to the neighborhoods where we currently achieve promising results in Philadelphia – neighborhoods characterized by disinvestment, unacceptably high rates of crime and poverty. Ronn’s track record of achievement, educational prowess and exemplary leadership is exactly what we need to expand our community services throughout urban centers in the Midwest,” stated Rahim Islam.

Johnson was formerly the Vice President of Education for the YMCA and founder of the YMCA Young Leaders Academy Charter School for the College Bound, one of the highest achieving Milwaukee area schools. Johnson is currently completing his dissertation for a doctoral degree in Urban Education from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in New York City. Ronn Johnson brings over 25 years of experience to Universal Companies.

Universal Expands to Milwaukee & Midwest
“I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to lead a cutting edge educational program within the YMCA. The experience was priceless! As I look forward to the final 20 years ahead of me in education, I am honored to have a new opportunity to expand quality education opportunities for more young people in urban areas. This is really not an ending or a beginning for me – it’s merely a continuation of shaping the lives of our future”, said Johnson.

Charity Educating the Children Benefits from Support of Leading Web Agency Alchemy Viral

Children in the Masai Mara region of Kenya will now be helped further following the announcement that one of the UK’s leading Web Search Optimisation agencies is backing charity Educating the Children. Alchemy Viral has this week announced its support for the leading international children’s charity.

Educating the Children works to raise awareness of the issues affecting children throughout the Masai Mara region, including things like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and enforced childhood marriages for young girls.

Masai Mara is a time-honoured favourite destination for tourists from all over the world, yet the region’s inhabitants remain neglected and abused. Educating the Children was set up after one of the charity’s founder visited Masai Mara and found poor education conditions, with not enough teachers and poor schooling levels for children throughout the region.

In Masai Mara some girls are forced into marriages as young as 8 years old. Andreas Voniatis, Managing Director of Alchemy Viral, wants his company to commit to supporting forward-looking projects like the current Educating the Children scheme to build a secondary school for girls in the region.

Andreas Voniatis says, “I have great sympathy with the aims of ETC. My daughter is just 3 months old. Like every parent in every country I have high hopes for her. I can’t imagine her being denied an education, or even worse being a victim of enforced marriage or FGM”.

“I want to spread the word about the charity’s work. We will be quite overt in our support of ETC to all of the people we communicate with, be it by email, our website, or corporate activities. We are also supporting the charity with what we do best… raising their profileon the web. We have already created a Facebook page for the charity and added a link to our Facebook page. We are Tweeting regularly about ETC and teaching them also the importance of regular publishing and how to earn coverage across the web”, Andreas went on.

Veritas Prep Announces Free Online SAT Prep Seminar on Sept. 6

Session will review tools, techniques and strategies students should know to more effectively prepare for the SAT, as well as common misconceptions about the exam; top errors to avoid

Malibu, California, August 22, 2012 – Veritas Prep, the largest global provider of test prep and admissions consulting services, today announced that it is offering a free online SAT prep seminar on September 6 at 8:00pm ET. Students and parents are both welcome to attend. The session is designed for participants who are unfamiliar with the SAT and are unsure about what to expect, as well as those who have taken the exam, but have reached a plateau and are looking to enhance their preparation efforts to achieve an increased score. Registrations are being accepted online at http://www.veritasprep.com/free-sat-webinar/.

“The SAT does not have to be an unknown,” said Shaan Patel, Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep and one of the few test takers in the world to achieve a perfect 2400 on the SAT. “While it may seem like a daunting challenge, it can be conquered. There are things that students can do to prepare more effectively and achieve their best possible score.”

During the one-hour session, attendees will learn:

* Many of the same strategies that Shaan Patel utilized to go from a 1760 to a perfect 2400

* Common misconceptions about the SAT and what they mean for students

* The top errors to avoid

* Steps students can take today – including many that do not cost anything but time – to better prepare for the exam

The online seminar will also feature a Q&A so participants can gain answers to any questions they may have about the SAT or the preparation process. Jon Small, Veritas Prep’s Vice President of College Prep, will lead the webinar.

The Sept. 6 session is one of several free SAT resources Veritas Prep makes available to students. In addition to regular online seminars, Veritas Prep also provides a free College Board SAT practice test for download and answers to frequently asked questions.

Veritas Prep also offers an SAT course, Veritas Prep SAT 2400, developed with Shaan Patel. The class is available as a classroom course, live online, on demand in high definition or in private SAT tutoring sessions and features the only zero risk, money back guarantee in the industry.
