Hofsas House Packages for 2018

Get Artsy Package

For decades, Carmel, California has been a haven for artists, from authors, poets and actors to painters and sculptors. Today there are more than 80 art galleries within walking distance from the hotel. The Hofsas House is part of that artistic tradition and has been touched by one of the world’s most famous artists. Did you know that artist Maxine Albro was commissioned by Donna Hofsas to paint the welcoming mural and the headboard featured in Room 47 of the Hofsas House? In the 1940s and 1950s, Maxine was living in Carmel and was friends with Donna. After the main four-story addition to the Hofsas House was completed in 1957, Donna asked Maxine to paint the mural and add other highlights to the front of the building to enhance the hotel’s Bavarian theme. Maxine also painted the three pictures now hanging in the lobby.

The Hofsas House celebrates Carmel’s artistic legacy by offering guests its special “Get Artsy Package.” This package includes a stay in the Room 47 — the very room Maxine Albro painted! Mention the Hofsas House “Get Artsy” package with the code “HHArt” and receive a gourmet cheese tray and bottle of wine upon arrival.

Carmel continues to be an artist colony and attracts some of the world’s most famous artists, including painters, sculptors, and photographers. Hofsas House can help arrange a tour of Carmel’s art galleries and artists’ studios with Carmel Art Tours. Discover secret passageways, visit hand-picked galleries, both the internationally acclaimed and the hidden gems. There’s also an opportunity for a chance encounter with an artist at work in a Carmel studio. Cost is $25 per person, reservations are required, and participants meet for the tour at Carmel Visitors Center. Info at www.carmelarttours.com, 800-979-3370.

Wine and Chocolate Package

Upgrade your stay at Hofsas House with a four pack of handcrafted artisanal sea salt caramels from Monterey’s Lula’s Chocolates and a bottle of award-winning Monterey County wine.

Monterey County wines are now on par with California’s other legendary wine regions such as Napa and Sonoma. In fact, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Monterey County as one of the world’s top 10 wine destinations — ahead of the Napa Valley and in the company of the other famed wine-growing regions around the world.

Monterey County produces 42 different varietals of high-quality, award-winning wines, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. For this special package choose either a Monterey County Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from a personally selected list of wines.

Lula’s Chocolates, founded by Scott Lund, are made the old-fashioned way, using recipes passed down from Scott’s grandmother, Lula herself. To this day, Lula’s makes sure each hand-dipped, small batch, deliciously fresh chocolate is an experience worth savoring.

Cost for this wine-and-chocolate package is $25. Use the code HHChoc when booking this package.

Hofsas House is one of the most dog-friendly hotels in Carmel. Guests receive a complimentary “Doggie Welcome Package” upon arrival that includes:

“I Love Arts: Ms. America 2017 Oksana Vovk is a special guest at the Newport Beach Sculpture Exhibition, Phase III in her home town of Newport Beach”

Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, 2017-Nov-03 — /REAL TIME PRESS RELEASE/ — Ms. America 2017 Oksana Vovk attended Newport Beach Sculpture in Civic Center Park Exhibition Phase III near Newport Beach City Hall on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

Ms. America 2017 Oksana Vovk with artist Steven Reiman at the Newport Beach Sculpture Exhibition, Phase III

“This was a long-awaited event for all Newport Beach residents”, Vovk said shortly after the opening ceremony took place in the Community Room and City Hall open session chambers, where everyone in attendance had a chance to learn more about the amazing new art coming to the Civic Park. “Mayor Muldoon is doing such a great job in bringing arts to the City and meeting the artists in person during and after the ceremony was just very special. Nine new sculptures will decorate the Civic Park and give our City a great makeover”.

“Flight” a sculpture by Steven Reiman at the Newport Beach Sculpture Exhibition, Phase III

Vovk won Ms. America 2017 title with her two-fold platform to fight autism and promote organic living. She is determined to make a difference during her year as Ms. America 2017 by positively influencing her community and getting more women involved in community service and helping others.

Ms. America Pageant is open to women 26 years of age and up, single, divorced, widowed or married, with or without children. For more information about the Ms. America® Pageant please visit Pageant’s official website at: www.MsAmericaPageant.com. The Ms. America ® Pageant is a registered federal trademark with the USPTO in Washington DC since February 2000 and ranks as one of the top pageant trademarks in the United States.

“My new favorite sculpture was made by California artist Steven Reiman and is called “Flight”, Vovk continued. “I arrived at the ceremony early and had a chance to walk around the park and look at each sculpture up close, and “Flight” just took my breath away. Such a powerful statement embodied in this piece of art made of stainless steel and bronze. According to Mr. Reiman, the symbolic bird soaring through a ring of the sun represents a future of wonder with the random letters that cover its form questioning the human experience and how we impact our future. I met with Mr. Reiman and his lovely wife Ruth right after the ceremony and I was truly touched by his kindness and great passion with which he spoke about his creation. I Love Arts and now I have a new favorite sculpture in my city created by an amazing artist”, Vovk said.

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites Announces New Wine-Themed Room in Partnership With Award-Winning Soledad-Based Carmel Road Winery

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed and decorated by Soledad-based Carmel Road Winery.

Carmel, CA, September 6, 2017 — Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed and decorated by Soledad-based Carmel Road Winery.

Carmel Road wines are inspired by the wind and the waves that define Monterey, which in turn inspired the vision for the Carmel Road wine room at the Vendange Inn.

“We were honored to be selected to bring one of their suites to life with the Carmel Road look and feel,” says Chrissy Gray, Carmel Road tasting room manager. “We chose cool blue and seafoam green tones to give guests that tranquil feeling of being at the beach. Think upscale picnic with your toes in the sand — with a wine glass in hand, of course!”

Gray says they wanted to bring to life the coastal, peaceful vibe found in Carmel, as well as in their tasting room, so they created several large photo canvases showcasing the nearby ocean, with a wine-themed twist. There’s also a beautiful nook under a wine rack where guests can sit and simply relax with a glass of Carmel Road Pinot Noir or Chardonnay.

To really give guests a sense of what Carmel Road Winery has to offer, in the room they will find a selection of Carmel Road wines for purchase, information about their wine club as well as the winery, beautiful etched glasses, stone coasters, plush throw blankets, and complimentary tasting cards for up to four people.

“Carmel Road is a sense of place, and we hope the guests in this room come to discover that special feeling for themselves,” says Gray.

Carmel Road joins 14 other wineries in partnership with Vendange to sponsor wine-themed rooms. From the McIntyre Vineyards’ room with its impressive 100-year-old grapevine section to J. Lohr’s wine barrel on the balcony, every winery’s room offers a signature luxury experience. The participating wineries include: Blair, Cima Collina, Dawn’s Dream, Galante, Holman Ranch, J. Lohr, Joullian, Manzoni, McIntyre, Otter Cove, Tudor, Twisted Roots, Mesa Del Sol and Ventana.

About Carmel Road Winery

Inland from Monterey’s rugged coastline, yet still directly in the path of the ocean’s relentless influence, Carmel Road Winery creates vibrant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Grigio that capture the essence of this remarkable region. The winery tailors its viticulture and winemaking techniques to capture the compelling character of this windswept area. Since its founding in 1997, the family-owned and operated winery has worked continually to improve farming and winemaking practices, creating complex wines while also preserving the ecosystem for future generations. Carmel Road is certified by SIP (Sustainability in Practice) and CCSW (Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing) and recognized as a leader in water conservation, energy efficiency and land restoration. Emblematic Artwork by Juan Luis Perez at Variations on the Same Subjects: People, Nature and Geometry Exhibition Curated by Mariavelia Savino

Special Artwork by Juan Luis Perez at Variations on the Same Subjects: People, Nature and Geometry Exhibition, curated by Mariavelia Savino, presented by Contemporary Art Projects USA.

Miami, FL, USA — An emblematic piece initiates the path throughout the exhibition “Variations on the same Subjects: People, Nature and Geometry” presented by Contemporary Art Projects USA and hosted by the ArtsPark @ Hollywood, FL. A large painting by the artist Juan Luis Perez, who was born in Cuba and lives in Miami, FL, Sombras de mi Pasado (Shadows of my Past) Illusions Series, is shown at the entrance of the space. Why? …because this artwork merges several concepts of the overall exhibition, in the intellectual, the creative and the technical ambits. As a curator, I believe that every artist is a communicator, who translates his/her own experience to the current moment in order to state his/her beliefs and messages to the present viewer, as well as to the future generations that later will contemplate the work. This particular artwork has figurative, abstract and geometric elements, creating connections with the natural, the human and the architectonical. Then, each artist is by talent and vocation an innovator, which does not mean that they would not use previous influences or inspiration by other artists. But, the important point, as it is for this artwork and for the artist in the exhibition, everyone is, and must be at the end, unique and original. Finally, any technique used has to be excellent and well managed. Well, I live now the artist to speak by his own. Juan Luis Perez says: “I consider myself away from trends. I create guided by my truest inspiration from total freedom of choice. Completely self-taught, I don’t believe in academic dogmas or market claims. I change style as if changing clothes. Art is passion, fun, great adventure. I use acrylic, oil, charcoal, graphite, resins, gesso, alcohol, and newspapers sheets, love monochromatic tones, rough or dynamic strokes, turning the spatula in my work’s biggest protagonist. I returned to my roots, expressing a traditions’ rich culture filled with energy from pure imagination. My interest revolves around human beings and their conflicts. My works are profound social portraits of a generation. I’m concerned in cultural dialogues between East and West, societies which, despite their differences, belong to the same condition: human.” – “…I use truth and fantasy bringing the viewer a sense of purpose, passion, realism as well as a timeless feel. Through abstract expressions I aim to achieve the emotional compass humanity reveals in all phases of life as a poetic evolution. With every stroke of the brush and a lyrical composition of visual effects I create a dramatic transformation of old and new …a profound connection to express the visuals of my soul.” – “I try to be unique in my own individual way, my work is a fusion of all my lived experiences and skills & techniques gathered over the years, combined to bring a personal expression of energy and a message to myself with a personal stamp that not even I can duplicate. Sometimes, I depict sceneries of natural culture with organic resources such as burlap, tree seeds, bark, raw rope, yarn to express what is available rather than what’s academic. However, from my early childhood Sandro Botticelli was the culprit of my love for visual art, and as a college student, José María Mijares, a Cuban vanguard artist of the San Alejandro School of Arts, was a personal friend and mentor in my beginnings. As I matured in my process, Antoni Tapies as well as Julian Schnabel became my greatest influences. The process of my work differs between installations, sculptures, and paintings. I can start my paintings several pieces at once and employ layers over a period of days. Sometimes I set them aside and finish months later, as they come complete in my mind and eyes. Others are finished rather fast, as I love the turnout of the accidents discovered in the process that then become as a rationalized finish. There are three key elements that separate free Caribbean and Latin American art from socially restrained Cuba and its artists: 1) A primary distinction for Cuban Art is the cultural inheritance of the Afro-Cuban culture and strong Spaniard influence; 2) The diverse level of creativity due to its social lack of resources elevates its inventiveness and passion for expression; 3) The inability to speak out in freedom promotes a more intense visual message.” To conclude, as in this exhibit every artist comes from a different place, background and experience, each artwork will communicate its own message to the public.

The exhibition will take place from August 19 – September 13, 2017.
Monday thru Thursday 11:00a.m. to 8:00p.m.
Closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Carmel, CA, August 7, 2017 — Renowned African Stone Sculptor Moses Nyanhongo, Carmel Sculptors Terrie Bennett and Steven Whyte Will be doing Live Sculpture Demonstrations and Displaying their New Works at Devendorf Park and their respective Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea Sunday, August 27th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m

Nyanhongo is a renowned fine art stone sculptor of Zimbabawe’s Shona Sculpture Movement, which has captivated art lovers and collectors the world over. Bennett is a second-generation sculptor who has been sculpting professionally for more than 30 years and exhibits at Bennett Sculpture Carmel. Whyte is an internationally renowned sculptor who specializes in massive monuments, including national memorial monuments to Bob Hope, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Steinbeck.

To celebrate the opening of “Life in Stone,” an exhibition of over 40 new stone sculptures at Gallery Sur in Carmel, the internationally celebrated Nyanhongo will demonstrate his stone-sculpting talents at the free event in Devendorf Park in downtown Carmel. Joining him that day will be Bennett, who will also conduct a live sculpting demonstration in the park.

Just a few blocks away, at his gallery on Dolores between 5th and 6th, Whyte will also be holding a live sculpting demo. Organizers of the event are encouraging people to visit all three demonstrations to see different techniques in use by each artist.

All live demos take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, and are all free and open to the public.

Moses, part of the well-known Nyanhongo family of stone sculptors, will show the various techniques used in their distinctive sculpting process and will share the deep cultural and spiritual traditions expressed in the stone.

Gallery Sur in Carmel is a North American leader in offering original, one-of-a-kind Zimbabwean stone sculpture. The new “Life in Stone” exhibition, opening Aug. 27 at Gallery Sur, includes Shona sculpture ranging from important traditional works by older, revered artists to contemporary, purely abstract works from younger, internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean artists.

“For the past 23 years, I’ve had the pleasure of representing a handful of world-class stone sculptors from Zimbabwe,” says Braden Coolidge, artist representative and curator of the show. “Each year I hand-pick a selection that focuses on the very finest quality by a select few artists. This year’s collection is truly stunning. Clearly the most diverse and dynamic body of work I have ever seen, and in 23 years I’ve seen a lot!”

Shona artists often draw inspiration intuitively from their traditional culture: the mythology, folklore, rituals and beliefs in ancestral spirits that remain strong influences in contemporary Zimbabwean life. The integral roles of women in society are also a significant source of inspiration, often expressing the importance of the mother and child relationship and the respect for the elder’s wisdom. Both the physical and spiritual relationship with nature is another important theme, reflecting the country’s deep rural roots.

Utilizing beautiful stones in various colors, unearthed by the artists from remote mines and quarries, their distinctive sculptures are hand-carved using timeworn techniques, without power tools, maintaining a close relationship to the stone.

The Shona Sculpture Movement, which first began in the 1950s, is named after the largest tribe engaged in stone sculpting in Zimbabwe. The name Zimbabwe is derived from the Shona word meaning “house of stone.” In the late 1960s, the new art movement born in Africa was celebrated at the famed Musee Rodin in Paris and Shona sculptors caught the attention of the art world.

Bernard Matemera, one of the founders of the Shona movement described the process of working with stone like this:

“The spirits are everywhere in the air, in the rocks. A rock is like a fruit — like an orange or a banana. You don’t eat them without peeling them first. It needs to be opened to be eaten. I open the rocks. The fruit is inside.”

Whyte studied at the prestigious Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture, which served as a catalyst for a remarkable career in portrait sculpture. The sculptor’s accomplishments in the field were recognized when he was elected Vice President of the Society of Portrait Sculptor.

Whyte’s accomplishments as a portrait sculptor have made him sought-after for public memorials and installations both in England and throughout the United States with subjects ranging from local miners, to soldiers and fire fighters.

He is credited with more than 40 life-size and large bronze figures in Britain and the United States including The Silverdale Mining Memorial; The Lance Sergeant Jack Baskeyfield VC Tribute; The Spirit of 1948; the Dr. John Roberts Monument; the sixteen figure-multi-million dollar National Military Tribute to Bob Hope for San Diego; two over life-size monuments to Dr. Martin Luther King, and a twice-life size portrait figure of 1957 Heisman Trophy Winner John David Crow for Texas A&M at College Station.

In May 2011, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department unveiled Whyte’s four-figure tribute to the fallen deputies of the sheriff’s department. The year 2014 saw the unveiling of nine 110% life-size bronze figures for the Cannery Row Monument, in Monterey, a life size (11-foot) Jumbo the Elephant for Tufts University in Massachussetts, and in 2014, installed the largest single bronze sculpture for any college or university anywhere, the $1.7 million Aggie War Hymn Monument for Texas A&M University.

Whyte was awarded the Sports Artist of the Year in 2016 by The United States Academy of Sports and The American Sport Art Museum & Archives. Also in 2016, The Smithsonian Institute chose his portrait bust of U.S. Congressman John Conyers for National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.

Whyte’s edition work features the drama and evocativeness of his monuments combined with a more personal point of view.

Carmel, CA, July 24, 2017 — Renowned African Stone Sculptor Moses Nyanhongo, Carmel Sculptors Terrie Bennett and Steven Whyte Will be doing Live Sculpture Demonstrations and Displaying their New Works at Devendorf Park and their respective Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea Sunday, August 27th, 11 a.m.

Support the Sahwira Fund at Gallery Sur:

Gallery Sur also supports the all-volunteer Sahwira Fund, to build classrooms at the Maulana School for Orphans in Epworth, Zimbabwe. Supported by 10% of the proceeds of all sculpture sales, eight classrooms have been built and are now sheltering many of the 800-plus students at the school. Six more classrooms are planned to meet the demand.

Just announced. Gallery Sur’s “ART FOR EDUCATION” web page at http://gallerysur.com/collections/63114/, is currently offering one-off discounted fine art photographs and sculptures, of which 100% of the purchase of these selected artworks will be donated to the Sahwira Fund through Aug. 31 .

For more information on any of these works, please contact Gallery Sur at (831) 626-2615.
