“I am sincerely honored to have been selected as the new Executive Director for the Center for Community Advocacy,” Gonzalez said. “I come with a renewed spirit to work and continue the objective of empowering our community. I look forward to working with staff, board and community partners to further CCA’s mission.”

As an experienced bilingual, bicultural nonprofit leader, Gonzalez spent the past five years in leadership roles with YWCA Monterey County, including as Director of Legal Services. He holds two Juris Doctorate degrees — one from Monterey College of Law and the other from Universidad del Valle de Atemajac School of Law, Guadalajara Mexico.

“Daniel has demonstrated a deep commitment to our community, particularly farmworkers and others who are struggling with housing and health issues,” said Lydia Villarreal, CCA Founder. “He brings a wealth of experience in administration, grant-writing and leadership expertise. We extend a warm welcome to Daniel.”

“The staff and I welcome Daniel to CCA,” said Lopez. “We are excited and look forward to working with him and sharing our experiences to help advance and continue our CCA mission to develop leadership and empower our farmworker community in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys.”

About CCA

CCA provides education, orientation and legal support to farmworkers and other low-income working families who want to establish neighborhood committees that work to improve housing and health conditions. CCA trains these committees to negotiate with landlords to resolve issues such as unsafe housing conditions, housing discrimination and security deposits. CCA also trains these committees to provide preventative health information and interventions in their neighborhoods.

CCA-trained committees also receive instruction that teaches farmworkers how to establish alliances with local public officials and local civic leaders. These alliances help farmworkers achieve local policies that help their efforts to improve farmworker health and housing conditions.

Theme of 2019 Monterey County Fair, ‘High Tides and Carnival Rides,’ and official poster unveiled

The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

Monterey, CA, November 18, 2018 — The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

The fair also unveiled its official poster for this year’s event, featuring critters from the fair’s popular livestock displays and auctions, including a cow, horse, goat, rabbit, ewe, rooster and pig frolicking on the beach with a “woodie” station wagon and surfboards with the fair’s carnival rides in the background.

The poster was designed by artist Scott Westmoreland, who is well known for his surf, ocean, and woodie car-themed work. He also created official posters for the fair in 2009, with “Reel in the Fun,” in 2013 with “At the Heart of it All,” and in 2015, with “Farm Fresh Fun.”

Westmoreland began his career as an illustrator in the entertainment industry as an artist for major theatrical productions nationwide, including the Broadway stage. He has also worked with the Walt Disney Company and MCA Universal, later becoming a full-time staff artist at Disney. Westmoreland created numerous marketing, merchandising and collector edition pieces for Disney, as well as countless conceptual and developmental campaigns for Michael Eisner.

Westmoreland later rejoined the freelance world and is known as a “top 100” seller on Art.com. Westmoreland has been featured by television shows like Fox’s “Trading Spouses,” ABC Family’s “Knock First,” and in publications like “Decor” and “Total Art Licensing.”

“We are thrilled about the 2019 Monterey County Fair theme, it ties in a lot of our favorite things, including the beach, surfing, livestock and carnival rides,” says Kelly Violini, Monterey County Fair CEO. “We hope that everyone can come out and join us for next year’s fair.”

Westmoreland’s Monterey County Fair art will be featured through the course of the 2019 Fair as the Fairs’ graphic identity. His Monterey County Fair art will be seen as the 2019 poster and shown in all of the merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts and souvenirs.

The Monterey County Fair will run from Thursday, Aug. 29-Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road, in Monterey.

Twisted Roots Wine offers Custom Labeling Program for Bottles of its Award-Winning Wines

Twisted Roots has launched a unique new custom labeling program in which you can buy a whole barrel of one of its award-winning wines — that’s 264 bottles! — and they take care of the rest.

Carmel Valley, CA, November 06, 2018 — If you’ve ever wished you had your own personal wine label but didn’t want the hassle of actually owning a vineyard, winery and bottling and labeling facility, Carmel Valley and Lodi-based Twisted Roots has the perfect answer for you.

Twisted Roots has launched a unique new custom labeling program in which you can buy a whole barrel of one of its award-winning wines — that’s 264 bottles! — and they take care of the rest.

“It’s all inclusive, we provide the wine, bottling, custom labeling, and help with artwork as needed,” said Matt Pridey, partner in Twisted Roots Wine. “It’s really a hands-off process for them, we even handle all the legalities. It’s a really cool product for companies or individuals, like client gifts, employee gifts, special events, parties and weddings.”

Pridey said the custom labeling program is based on the winemakers’ available product. Twisted Roots produces about 1,000 cases a year, or about 35 barrels, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay and Twisted Roots’ signature “1918” Old Vine Zinfandel. In addition, they need a lead time of three to six months, to allow for bottling and design decisions.

Twisted Roots has already completed several projects and is ready to take on orders. Cost varies according to what varietal is selected.

“We’re ready to rock!” he said. “It’s a really cool product and is a really great deal if you want volume. It looks like they made the wine themselves!”

To order your own custom-labeled bottles of Twisted Roots wine, go to twistedrootsvineyard.com or call (831) 594-8282.

About Twisted Roots

Centered in the heart of the Lodi appellation, Twisted Roots Vineyard is the work of three generations of family members dedicated to the practice of growing great wine grapes following sustainable growing practices. While the family established the vineyard in 1918, it wasn’t until recently that they began producing their own wines.

The Twisted Roots Vineyard label started with a Petite Sirah in 2005 produced by Ross Schmiedt, as a result of an overabundance of Petite Sirah on the vineyard. In 2009, production was expanded to include other varietals grown on the estate, while the wine making was moved from the old farmhouse, to their partners at Estate Crush in Lodi. Even though their famous Petite Sirah will always continue to be their flagship variety, Twisted Roots also offers a Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Old Vine Zinfandel.

Twisted Roots Wine LLC, was incorporated in 2010 by partners Josh Ruiz, Mike Hodge and Ross Schmiedt. Ross passed away in March of 2014 and will always be remembered for his contributions to making Twisted Roots what it is today.

In January of 2016, Josh and Julie bought Twisted Roots from the family. A few months later, the Twisted Roots partnership took on a new look as college friends Andy Gulley (wife Laura) of Fresno, Matt Brem (wife Laura) of Salinas, and Neil Amarante of Paso Robles joined Josh and Julie in an effort to help grow the business.

Also joining the partnership is Whitney Pridey (husband Matt) of Salinas who is the current wine club manager and also the sister of Matt Brem.

Each partner brings a unique skillset to that has proven to be invaluable in helping Twisted Roots reach its goals.

Twisted Roots has two tasting rooms, one in Lodi, where Twisted Roots Vineyards was born, and a recently renovated one in Carmel Valley.

About Moonwater Dance Project

During a successful professional dance career, founder Mackenzie King experienced and witnessed personally, as did many of her colleagues, a disturbing climate in which individual talent and artistry are ignored, dancers minds and bodies not honored and disregard for personal spirit.

When Dana Alsamsam created Moonwater Dance Project and hired Mackenzie to be a part of a small, one-time performance, each of her dancer’s commitments and talent was valued by creating an artistic, emotional, and physically fulfilling performance piece. This fresh ideal, contrary to previous less collaborative experiences, left Mackenzie inspired and she vowed to keep that environment alive and growing. Ultimately Ms. Alsamsam generously gifted the name, as well as the company’s first piece of repertoire to Ms. King and Moonwater Dance Project was founded as a non-profit organization in 2018.

Mackenzie’s laser focus is on artistry, individuality and the ability to be vulnerable. Artists love what they do yet often are taken advantage of and receive far less than deserved. Ms. King’s dream is to honor the passion and sacrifice without lessening the quality of life.

The aesthetic of Moonwater Dance Project is similar to water and has a captivating duality, soft yet strong, nurturing and destructive; a force to be reckoned with, unpredictable and utterly calming.

Carmel, CA, October 30, 2018 — Dance Kids of Monterey County, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, announced that it will perform a mini version of its popular “Nutcracker: A Monterey Peninsula Tradition,” Dec. 22, at Carmel Valley Ranch.

Due to renovations at the Ranch, the event will be held in the Golf Club House this year. The event will be held from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., with the show beginning at 2:30 p.m.

A full production of Dance Kids’ “Nutcracker” will be performed Dec. 7-9 at the Sunset Center in Carmel. The full production features the 39-member Monterey County Pops! symphony orchestra conducted by Dr. Carl Christensen. And, for the first time, the production will feature a children’s choir performing onstage during Act I’s “Dance of the Snowflakes.”

About Dance Kids

With over 24 years of production history, Dance Kids of Monterey County, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization founded by Richmond, is proud of its wide range of theatrical experience that support the youth of the Monterey Peninsula. In the early days, productions at the Carmel Ballet Academy included “Nutcracker” and original spring musicals written by Walt de Faria and a full-length spring ballet, produced at Sunset Center.

Dance Kids was known for fun-loving nostalgia surrounding the musical and drew from the community a range of young people and their families committed to theater. As it grew, its little venue could not handle the “Nutcracker” any longer, but continued at the venue for the spring musicals, until those too, outgrew the dance studio. “Nutcracker” moved to Sunset Center in 1995 and has remained there as its home venue except for the years the center was being remodeled.

Dance Kids “Nutcracker” has grown into a premier production eagerly awaited by cast and community. The original vision of Dance Kids of Monterey County has been honored as well as surpassed in the ensuing years. This year is one of pivotal change and growth.

Monterey Symphony’s 2018-2019 Season, ‘Sound Waves,’ Concert #2 Nov. 17-18, Features Acclaimed Flutist Carol Wincenc

Monterey Symphony’s 2018-19 Season, “Sound Waves,” continues Nov. 17-18 with concert #2, at the Sunset Center in Carmel

Monterey, CA, October 26, 2018 — Monterey Symphony’s 2018-19 Season, “Sound Waves,” continues Nov. 17-18 with concert #2, at the Sunset Center in Carmel, and features acclaimed flutist Carol Wincenc performing with the Symphony and members of the Youth Music Monterey County Honors Orchestra.

Wincenc, professor of flute at Juilliard, joins the orchestra for Carl Nielsen’s “Flute Concerto,” composed in 1926 for the legendary flautist M. Holger-Gilbert Jespersen. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Op. 36 — often referred to as the “Fate” symphony because of the dark undertones — headlines the second concert of the season. Written in the shadow of Beethoven’s masterful Symphony No. 5, Tchaikovsky echoes the great master’s melancholy in this hallmark orchestral work.

This concert will also feature members of the Youth Music Monterey County Honors Orchestra playing side-by-side on Hector Berlioz’s Overture, Le corsaire, Op. 21, which, like the Tchaikovsky symphony, was also composed during a period of great despair.
