National Employee Health and Fitness Day will be celebrated from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Salinas YMCA Family Center, 117 Clay St., in Salinas.

National Employee Health and Fitness Day was created to promote the benefits of physical activity for individuals through their work site health partnerships.

TEAM WLSL™ will celebrate its 10th anniversary by sending the message that swimming lessons save lives to millions of kids and adults. WLSL™ events will take place at hundreds of locations in more than 20 countries on five continents over the course of 24 hours.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, created by the World Waterpark Association in 2010, is a global public relations event supported by aquatic facilities, waterparks, pools, swim schools, YMCAs, among others. The WLSL™ event serves as a platform to help the global aquatics industry work together to build awareness about the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.

Historic Mission San Antonio is holding its annual Fiesta on Sunday June 9th.

Jolon, CA, May 12, 2019 – Historic Mission San Antonio is holding its annual Fiesta on Sunday June 9th. The Fiesta was originally held in the 1800s and the tradition continues today. Come early, at 9:00 AM, for the Catholic Mass in honor of the Mission’s patron saint, St. Anthony de Padua. The Fiesta starts after Mass and lasts until 3:00 PM.

This will be a fun-filled day for all! There will be a DJ and a live band. Teen Author Victoria R. Maybury Pens Unique Young Adult Novel

Upcoming teen author Victoria R. Maybury was six years old when she found her passion for writing and storytelling.

San Antonio, TX, USA, May 10, 2019 — In the words of Tom Hiddleston, “You never know what’s around the corner. It could be everything. Or it could be nothing. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, and then one day you look back, and you’ve climbed a mountain.” Upcoming teen author Victoria R. Maybury was six years old when she found her passion for writing and storytelling. But it was her eleventh grade English teacher, Mrs. Caille, who showed her how to bring her stories to life, which ultimately led to Maybury becoming a published author.

Always an avid reader, Maybury, author of “Fire and Ice” grew up in Togo, West Africa where she learned about many cultures and ways of life that can be seen in her writing today. After she and her family moved to Canada, Maybury was inspired by a dream to compose her first book. “I felt that there were not many young adult books that I could get and read, so I decided to write one,” said Maybury. “Reading has brought me out of some dark spots in my life and brought me joy and love for life again, so I wanted to help other people enjoy life more with my book.”

“Fire and Ice” is a fantasy young adult novel that follows a young woman on a big adventure, filled with love, mystery, and suspense. An admirer of authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Marissa Meyer, and Suzanne Collins, Maybury took notes from her life experiences to make the book even more vivid. “One of the more mysterious characters was inspired by someone I encountered at a book store, and that sent me back to the drawing board. I made changes and improvements to my original manuscript, which has led to the book that I published.”

Maybury has also incorporated her experiences living in Africa into her work. “All of the chapter titles are based on the theme of love in different languages. I like to use other cultures when writing to create new worlds and fun characters,” says Maybury.

In addition to attending high school and participating in hobbies such as cooking, writing recipes, singing, and playing sports, Maybury also enjoys bringing her characters to life in her pastimes. “I like creating costumes by hand and making meals that would be what different cultures in my book’s world would eat and wear.”

The 60th annual festival takes place June 1-2, 2019 at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center in Monterey and continues the legacy of celebrating the iconic artichoke and region known as the “Artichoke Center of the World.”

For almost six decades, the Artichoke Festival has been dedicated to informing and exciting festival attendees about the unique qualities of artichokes including farming, harvest, and preparation to demonstrate how the artichoke industry has influenced the history of Monterey County. And now, as a 501c3 organization, the purpose remains the same with an emphasis on giving back to the local community.

“We look forward to the Artichoke Festival each year because the event paints a clear picture of how this community comes together to support one another,” said Diana McClean, senior director of marketing at Ocean Mist Farms and board member for the Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival. “The purpose of this organization aligns directly with Ocean Mist Farms’ values, which is part of the reason we enjoy sponsoring this annual event.”

This scholarship fund was set up in the memory of Castroville’s Ashleigh Nicole Swain, 16, a junior at North Monterey County High School, who died in a tragic car accident on Nov. 4, 2011. She was born January 18, 1995 in Salinas, to Jeremiah and Tobi Swain. She was a member of PAL at NMC, was talented in stained glass and jewelry making, and hoped to pursue a career in nursing. The group is also involved in a Turkey Trot to raise funds and buy turkeys for holiday meals, donates toys to kids during Christmas and participates in other charitable events. Carmel-based Lewis Builders’ Rebuild of 1960s House by Renowned Architect Takes His Design Esthetics Into 21st Century

Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs.

Carmel, CA, April 29, 2019 — Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs. But even an architect whose work was ahead of his time could use an update in the 21st century.

That was the design-and-rebuild challenge for designer-builder John Lewis of Lewis Builders in Carmel, California. He wanted to keep the design esthetics of Eichler, but update the look, feel and functioning of an Eichler-designed home from the 1960s perched on a hillside in Carmel with views of the ocean.

The challenges were many: the heating and ventilation system was poured into the concrete slab foundation and had pest intrusion. The floor plan was choppy — you had to walk through one bedroom to get to the other. The kitchen was crowded — you couldn’t see from the kitchen to the dining room nor to the ocean. Parts of the house were starved for natural light.

In addition, a crowded kitchen, a misplaced fireplace wall, and overgrown vegetation outside all hindered ocean views from this 1,600-square-foot house located a block and a half from the beach. An old patio arbor blocked natural light and felt crowded.

The challenge was to rebuild the house into a modern, well-equipped and well-lighted home yet still keep as much of Eichler’s design esthetic as possible.

“We pride ourselves on being able to accomplish any kind of architectural design, Victorian, Contemporary, Carmel Cottage, Craftsman, and so on,” said Lewis. “With this house, we wanted to pay homage to Eichler and do something he would do in 2020. He was pretty modern for his time, so we call this an ‘updated’ Eichler.”

Lewis and his team added a hallway, along with a slight bump out to the back that made three bedrooms out of two. Kitchen, living, dining, and foyer were all opened up with windows and skylights to bring the outdoors in.

Some of the solutions included:

•Original heating, and ventilation, system was removed and radiant floor heating installed.

•A hallway was added to make three bedrooms.

•Kitchen, dining and living room were opened up.

•Fireplace was moved, energy efficient windows installed, landscaping rejuvenated, all to maximize ocean views.

•Natural light was optimized in true Eichler style to bring the outdoors in with six skylights, four patio doors, two French doors, and glass transoms on both interior and exterior walls.

•An operable skylight above the shower, including a glass transom, to bring both light and fresh air into the interior master bath.

•Trimless interior windows and doors to enhance the clean, geometric lines, especially prominent in the glass hallway.

Some of the details of the rebuild:

•7.5-inch wide plank European oak hardwood floors

•Natural stacked stone walls flank kitchen walls, fireplace wall, and accented throughout

•Waterfall countertops and TV console in Calcutta quartz

•Caesarstone in raw concrete quartz countertops

•Appliances from Bosch, Bertazzoni, and Fisher & Paykel

•Custom cabinetry

•Radiant floor heating

•Curbless showers

•Six oversized skylights (one operable above the Master shower), four patio doors, two French doors

•Two outdoor living spaces totaling more than 800 square feet

“We wanted to use clean, simple lines and natural elements such as wood and to add a warmth and softness to the space,” said Lewis, who calls the design “organic contemporary.” “We honored Eichler’s design by keeping some of the main esthetics in place.

Lewis said he learned a lot about Eichler’s design sensibilities by working on the house.

“As a student of design, I’m immediately attracted to these types of homes,” he said. “I would do anything to learn from the masters like Eichler. So this was a close, intimate experience to work with this house and its design. It was enhanced with modern conveniences, while being true to Eichler’s Mid-Century Modern design elements. We believe Eichler would be pleased.”
