Jan 24,2011 – Two-time cancer survivor, L.J. Martin, has announced the release of his new book, “Killing Cancer.” Martin’s book explores his battle with the deadly disease and how those with cancer can help their doctors kill the disease.
“Good attitude and mental toughness are a good part of the answer,” said Martin. “I can’t begin to tell you how many stories I have of misdiagnosis. Medicine is a science, but it’s not a perfect science. You want your doctor’s best educated guess, but you want it backed up with hard science. If you take no for an answer, then you can only blame yourself if you don’t stop the monster in its tracks.”
Martin’s 164-page book, “killing cancer,” is a valuable look at cancer from the patient’s point of view. Martin contracted prostate cancer and squamous throat cancer, and beat the odds for both. Prostate cancer kills 30,000 men each year in the U.S. Only 16 percent of victims Martin’s age survive throat cancer. Statistics show that 41 percent of the population will develop cancer at some time in their lives, and Martins’ book provides readers with an inside look at the emotions, tests, and treatment options that accompany the deadly disease.
The first indications of cancer can begin with the smallest of symptoms. Martin’s ordeal with throat cancer began with what appeared to be an infected lymph node on his neck, just below his jaw. His first sign of prostate cancer manifested as an inability to hold his urine. Like many people, it wasn’t until seemingly unrelated symptoms appeared that he visited his physician, but even then, standard testing didn’t reveal a definite diagnosis.
Throughout the book, Martin writes honestly and with humor about embarrassing examinations, coping with claustrophobia during MRIs, and learning patience while awaiting test results. He speaks candidly and eloquently about the shock and fear of hearing the word cancer, as well as the potential loss of his sex life. From herbal remedies, homeopathic solutions, radiation and surgery, Martin holds nothing back as recounts his battle with cancer and desire to win.
“It’s said we continually have cancer cells traipsing around trying to make mischief or worse,” said Martin. “All we can do is do what we hope will give our body every opportunity to do its best. To those with cancer, fight on, stay positive and do what you can to help your body help the docs keep you healthy.”
