Veritas Prep Announces a More Effective Way for Students to Master SAT Vocabulary with iPhone App

New app introduces three powerful learning techniques to help students maximize their SAT scores

Malibu, CA, February 19, 2013 – High school students have a new choice when it comes to mastering SAT vocabulary. Veritas Prep today announced the availability of a new free app, called SAT Vocabulary by Veritas Prep to make learning common SAT level words easier. The app allows students to play games, take quizzes and master important vocabulary words through memory retrieval instead of memorization, all on their iPhone. The SAT Vocabulary app is a complement to the other free online SAT prep resources offered by Veritas Prep.

The iPhone app includes stimulating features that will keep students engaged on the path to success. Features include:

* An innovative scoring system that helps students track their progress toward becoming a “master of vocab”

* A database of over 500 commonly used SAT level words

* Sentences that show students how words are used, not just their meanings

* Missions and games to challenge students (including brutally hard levels for those vocab masters)

The app also utilizes three powerful and proven learning techniques that help ensure students retain more of what they learn.

Adaptive Learning: The app keeps track of how well students know each word and emphasizes words students need to work on so they feel comfortable with the material they already do know.

Spaced Repetition: A technique that exposes students to words gradually over time so that they become a part of long-term memory learning.

Retrieval Practice: Students are asked to retrieve words from memory through exercises like writing sentences for words, which promotes long-term memory.

“High school students are busy people. Between academics and extra-curricular activities, they are always on the go. The app makes SAT prep easy to do anywhere, at anytime. Plus, this app employs learning techniques that encourage a deep understanding of new words rather than simple memorization which will help students achieve their highest possible score,” said Chad Troutwine, co-founder and CEO of Veritas Prep.

The SAT Vocabulary by Veritas Prep can be found in the Apple store by searching for Veritas Prep. To learn more about other SAT prep resources from Veritas Prep and its college admissions consulting services visit http://www.veritasprep.com/sat/.

Veritas Prep Announces Free Online SAT Prep Resources Chock Full of Insider Tips and Strategies

Free online SAT prep seminar will teach students new strategies and tips; other test prep and college application resources also available

Malibu, CA, January 28, 2013 – As high school juniors begin the college search and application process, one of the first steps for many is taking the SAT this spring. To assist these students, Veritas Prep today announced new dates and times for its free online SAT prep seminars. The seminars cover proven strategies and common misconceptions about the test. The seminars are complemented by additional free resources on Veritas Prep’s website that provide helpful information on the SAT reading, writing and math sections as well as insider tips from college admissions experts.

“Scoring well on the SAT is the foundation of a strong college application because a student’s score is often even weighed more heavily than his or her GPA and good preparation is the straightest path to earning a top score. In order to do well on the SAT, a test taker has to learn to apply the knowledge they’ve learned, so test preparation has to go beyond relying on what the student knows already or can memorize in a short amount of time. The seminars and other free resources are part of our dedication to help students learn to think like the test maker and develop strategies to earn their best possible score,” said Shaan Patel, a perfect SAT score recipient and Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep.

The SAT 2400 seminar is a great introduction for students – and their parents – who are getting ready to take the SAT for the first time. In addition to tips on how to prepare, the seminar covers insights into the application cycle and mistakes made by students and parents in the college admission process.

On top of the strategies in the SAT 2400 seminar, students will find resources that cover all aspects of SAT prep on the Veritas Prep website. The free resources include:

* SAT practice test – Knowing what to expect on the test is important. All students who visit the Veritas Prep website can download an official College Board SAT practice test, for free.

* SAT Math resources – Tips and helpful hints will provide students with key insights to do well on the three math portions on the SAT.

* SAT Reading and Writing resources – The SAT Reading score makes up one third of test takers’ total score. These resources and practice quizzes will help test takers improve critical reading comprehension and find the key to unlocking the section.

In addition to the SAT test prep resources, Veritas Prep has also made free college application resources available. Drawing upon insider knowledge of the college application process, Veritas Prep can provide guidance for students on:

* Early decision and early action in college admissions – Students can learn about the differences between types of early college applications and how to leverage each type to their advantage

* College admissions essay writing tips – These tips and helpful hints will teach students how to write winning admissions essays.

Veritas Prep SAT 2400 Earns Praise from Parents and Top Honor from The National Parenting Center

Veritas Prep SAT 2400 prep course recognized by parents for superb functionality and effectiveness in preparing students for the exam; it is among only a handful of education products to make the grade

Malibu, CA, November 15, 2012 – Veritas Prep today announced that its SAT prep course, Veritas Prep SAT 2400, has been recognized by The National Parenting Center with its prestigious Seal of Approval. The Seal of Approval program receives between 600 and 700 applications annually, and fewer than a dozen products are selected in each category in an award cycle. The award marks another significant milestone for the SAT prep course that has quickly become the standard of the industry.

The National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval program is most notable because it is based on evaluations solicited directly from parents and their children. For over 30 years, the independent testing procedure has asked parents and their children to provide reviews on products and services from educational and entertainment to travel destinations in order to advise, support and guide parents with sound, responsible counsel.

According to the National Parenting Center, “All parents want to give their children that extra edge and Veritas Prep’s SAT program does just that. Parents felt confident when they learned that Veritas Prep was the company behind the program. Parents reported a marked rise in their children’s confidence level with each practice test that they took. The online videos are clear, concise and quite easy to digest. There are many classes and tutors available to help prepare for this very important test but our testers felt that their children were in good hands with Veritas Prep.”

“We are honored that The National Parenting Center recognizes the value and quality of Veritas Prep SAT 2400 with its Seal of Approval. This award is a testament to the course’s unique and effective approach to SAT preparation,” said Chad Troutwine co-founder and CEO of Veritas Prep. “With seemingly countless test preparation courses available, where can parents even begin to choose? This award is one more reason why parents can be confident they have found in Veritas Prep the most effective SAT preparation for their child.”

Veritas Prep SAT 2400 is the only global SAT class developed by a perfect score recipient. It is available in-person, live online, on-demand or in private tutoring sessions and features proven strategies and techniques to help students achieve their highest possible score. The course offers multiple advantages over competitor’s prep courses, including a longer course format, higher instructor standards, and a zero risk, money-back guarantee. Unlike other SAT test prep courses offered in the industry, Veritas Prep SAT 2400 allows a student to take the course again at no charge or receive a full refund without having to approve perfect attendance and homework completion.

Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT Answered

Veritas Prep’s Shaan Patel Answers Five of the Most Commonly Asked Questions About How to Smartly Prepare For the SAT

Malibu, California, November 07, 2012 – Do you have questions about the SAT? You’re not alone. For many students and families, the SAT is daunting. To help answer many of the most common questions about the SAT test, Shaan Patel, a perfect SAT score recipient and Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep, identified the five questions he’s most frequently asked and offers responses below:

Why do smart students struggle with the SAT?
The SAT is very different than the tests students take in their high school classes, but many think that if they are a solid A student, they don’t need to prepare for the SAT. That overconfidence is the number one reason students who normally do well academically post disappointing scores the first time they take the exam. The SAT rewards the prepared and it is absolutely an exam students can master with effective SAT prep. Students that spend time learning and practicing key strategies, reviewing grammar rules and vocabulary and taking practice tests will be much better positioned for success on test day.

For students applying to competitive colleges and universities, is your GPA or SAT score more important?
When admissions officers look at GPA and SAT scores, only one is a standardized measure: the SAT. Grade point average has a high level of variability from school to school, which means it isn’t a consistent or standard measure with which to compare or evaluate applicants. So when it comes to college admissions, the four hours you spend taking the SAT is more important than the 4,000 hours you spend working on your GPA. Given that, whether you take an SAT course or prep on your own, you need to put considerable effort into preparing for the exam.

When is the best time to take the SAT?
While many consider spring of junior year the best time to take the SAT, Veritas Prep actually recommends that students first take the exam during the winter of their junior year. The reason is simple – timing. Students that wait until spring of their junior year are preparing for the SAT, finals and often AP exams as well. Add in sports, extracurricular activities and a job, and that is a lot to handle. The best plan is to take the SAT in the winter when you have more time to dedicate to SAT preparation. A common argument is that you should wait to take the SAT until after you’ve completed algebra II, but the truth is, if you prep properly you’ll have command of the strategies you need to correctly solve SAT math questions, not to mention the rest of the exam.

What’s the biggest misconception about the SAT?
The SAT is an unknown to a lot of people, so there are actually lots of misconceptions. The biggest misconception is that high school or AP classes are preparation enough for the SAT. Unfortunately, that just isn’t true. While AP classes can help on the SAT Subject tests, overall, the average high school curriculum is not designed with standardized college entrance exams in mind. The SAT tests different skills than what you learn in high school, and some properties of the exam even contradict what your teachers may have taught you. For example, English teachers emphasize quality over quantity when it comes to writing essays; however, on the SAT, the more you write on the essay, the higher you score. To get ready for the SAT, you’ll have to spend time preparing specifically for the exam in addition to your regular high school coursework.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to students preparing for the SAT?
Practice, and practice only with official College Board SAT practice tests. The best way to prepare for the exam is to use questions produced by the folks who created it. The College Board releases a question of the day that you can sign up to receive by email, as well as makes several tests available at little or no cost. A College Board SAT practice test is also among the free SAT resources Veritas Prep offers on its website.

Patel improved his SAT score from 1760 to a perfect 2400, earned more than $237,000 in scholarships and co-authored the Veritas Prep SAT 2400 program, which is available as a classroom course, live online, on demand in high definition or in private SAT tutoring sessions. Additionally, McGraw-Hill recently published his book, “SAT 2400 in Just 7 Steps.”

Veritas Prep Reveals the Five Biggest SAT Prep Mistakes

Students Preparing to Take the SAT Should Avoid These Common Errors

Malibu, California, September 10, 2012 – With summer coming to a close, high school students across the nation will shift their focus to the start of the school year. For many, that also means the college application process. One critical component of college admissions is a single test: the SAT. To help students prepare for the exam, Veritas Prep, the largest global provider of test prep and admissions consulting services, has outlined the five biggest SAT prep mistakes students should avoid.

Mistake #1: Assuming that high school English and math classes sufficiently prepare you for the SAT

Reality – The average high school curriculum is not structured to prep you for standardized college entrance exams. For example, how often in school are you tested on idioms and sentence completion or given a multiple choice algebra test? The answer: almost never. But SAT questions are written that way. To excel on the exam, students must prepare specifically for the SAT.

Mistake #2: Thinking that completing an SAT prep course is all you need to do to achieve optimal results on the SAT

Reality – There is no quick and easy path to a high SAT score – to achieve the best possible results, students must be willing to put in significant time and effort to study for the test. While a prep course can offer a considerable edge by helping students learn SAT-specific strategies and techniques and build the skills the exam seeks to measure, seat time in a prep class is not enough. Students must apply the knowledge gained in an SAT prep course to solving sample questions, doing vocabulary-building exercises and taking practice tests.

Mistake #3: Preparing with third-party practice SAT questions

Reality – Students should prepare for the SAT using questions produced by the College Board, the organization that creates the exam. Official College Board practice tests are the most accurate and reliable practice materials available. Only the College Board can offer genuine SAT practice questions that are guaranteed to stay consistent with future SAT exams. Don’t settle for second-rate, third party practice questions. Students can download a free College Board SAT practice test on the Veritas Prep website.

Mistake #4: Looking at answer choices before coming up with your own solution

Reality – The SAT is designed to fool unsure students. Students can avoid this issue by physically covering answer choices from sight using their hand. This helps students avoid being enticed by incorrect answer choices that SAT test writers have created as traps. Instead, students should WYPAD™ (Write Your Personal Answer Down) prior to looking at the answer choices. This gives students a concrete answer to look for without being distracted.

Mistake #5: Maintaining a clean, pristine test booklet on practice tests and test day

Reality – Unfortunately, most students have been trained in their high school classes not to write on tests because teachers often reuse them multiple times. However, the SAT is one of the few standardized exams left that is not computerized, so students should take advantage of the paper-and-pencil nature of the test and use the booklet to cross out eliminated answers, work out problems and outline their thoughts on paper instead of trying to keep track of everything on memory alone.

“Students preparing to take the SAT have the benefit of learning from the mistakes of others who have tackled the test before them,” said Shaan Patel, Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep and one of the few test takers in the world to achieve a perfect 2400 on the SAT. “These five mistakes are the most common errors students make – by knowing what they are, students can avoid repeating them and can prepare more effectively for the SAT.”

Patel improved his SAT score from 1760 to a perfect 2400, earned more than $237,000 in scholarships and co-authored the Veritas Prep SAT 2400 program. Recently, McGraw-Hill published his book, “SAT 2400 in Just 7 Steps.”

Veritas Prep Outlines the 5 Steps Every Parent Can Take to Help Their Student Ace the SAT

By following these five steps, parents will be able to better support their students as they prepare to take what is perhaps the most critical test of their high school career

Malibu, California, August 20, 2012 – For many parents of high school students, the SAT – a standardized exam most colleges and universities use to evaluate applicants – is somewhat of an unknown. While they understand that it is an important part of the college admissions process and that a high score can result in acceptance to the best schools and lead to scholarship awards, they may not know how they can help their students with SAT test prep so they can do their best on the exam. To assist parents, Veritas Prep, the largest global provider of test prep and admissions consulting services, has outlined five things every parent can do to help their student ace the SAT and become a more competitive college applicant.

1. Encourage Your Student to be Self-Motivated – While it’s great that you bought your son or daughter some SAT prep books or an SAT class, it may all be in vain if your child is not motivated to do well on the SAT on his/her own. Parents are only an external motivator for children; scores will start to skyrocket when students have an internal drive to do well. To help foster that drive, have your child identify three reasons why he or she wants to score well on the SAT. For example, do they want to gain admission to a competitive program? Or earn a significant scholarship? By creating a list of reasons and goals, students will be better able to self motivate and if they begin to lose focus you can remind them of what they’re working toward.

2. Simulate Real Testing Conditions – You know the cliché: practice makes perfect. But in reality, perfect practice makes perfect. And in order to practice perfectly, you should make sure your student mimics test day conditions when taking an SAT practice test at home. This means timing every section, no TV/internet/cell phone, 5-10 minute snack breaks every hour and nothing on his/her desk except a pencil, calculator and water bottle. Help your student know what to expect on test day so there are no surprises.

3. Teach Your Student New Vocabulary – The SAT is an exam that requires little memorization because it primarily tests higher order thinking skills. However, a scholarly vocabulary is one asset students must have to ace the SAT. As part of your student’s SAT practice routine, write an SAT “word of the day” on the refrigerator or in another area of the house that everyone can see each morning. To make it more fun, challenge your family members to use the SAT vocabulary word in at least one sentence throughout their day. Quiz your student regularly to make sure they retain previous days’ and weeks’ words as well. Note: make sure you use words from SAT-specific vocabulary lists rather than generic vocabulary lists.

4. Subscribe Your Child to the Official SAT Question of the Day – There is no company that produces more realistic questions than the organization that makes the SAT itself: the College Board. Everyday the College Board releases a real SAT question through its website. The Official SAT Question of the Day is not a throwaway problem, but an authentic SAT question. Your student can sign up to have the question e-mailed to his/her inbox, making sure SAT prep is a part of their daily routine. Students will have a bank of real SAT questions that they can use to improve their skills by preparing with questions exactly like the ones they’ll see on test day.

5. Ditch the High School English or Math Textbook as a Prep Tool – Traditional high school English and Math classes do not prepare your student for the SAT. The SAT is an exam that can be systematically prepared for using SAT-specific strategies. Have your child get ready for the exam using SAT preparation material, not classroom material that barely relates.

“Parents shouldn’t underestimate the importance of the SAT,” said Shaan Patel, Director of SAT Programs at Veritas Prep and one of the few test takers in the world to achieve a perfect 2400 on the SAT. “The 4-hour SAT exam is worth just as much in the college admissions process as the 4,000+ hours students spend in high school earning their GPA. By following these five steps, parents will be able to better support their students as they prepare to take what is perhaps the most critical test of their high school career.”

Patel improved his SAT score from 1760 to a perfect 2400, earned more than $237,000 in scholarships and co-authored the Veritas Prep SAT 2400 program. Recently, McGraw-Hill published his book, “SAT 2400 in Just 7 Steps.”
