Rosendin Electric Receives 2012 DBIA National Design-Build Award

Design-Build Institute of America Recognizes the Rosendin Electric and Hoffman Construction Design-Build Team for Work on the New Armed Forces Reserve Center at Camp Withycombe.

SAN JOSE, Calif. and HILLSBORO, Ore. (November 29, 2012) — Rosendin Electric, the nation’s largest private electrical contractor and a 100% employee-owned company, has received a 2012 National Design-Build Award in the Civic category from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) in recognition of support given to Hoffman Construction for the electrical design and construction of the new Camp Withycombe Armed Forces Reserve Center in Clackamas County, Oregon. In previous years, Rosendin Electric has been recognized for work on the Mineta San Jose International Airport, the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center, amongst other high-profile projects.

To be considered for a National Design-Build Award, a project must demonstrate the successful application of design-build best practices as defined by the DBIA Design-Build Manual of Practice. Best practices include bringing together key team members during the proposal process, as well as close coordination between design and construction team members from the design development stage through field construction and project completion.

The $72 million, LEED® Gold project was a new 250,000 square-foot Armed Forces Reserve Center, including 35,000 square-feet of vehicle storage and maintenance space, designed to support more than 1,300 soldiers in the Oregon National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve. The project included office suites, an assembly hall, conference and training rooms, a 400-seat auditorium, and electronic and static displays of military artifacts and campaign history to honor the soldiers of the 41st Infantry.

“This year’s award for our work at Camp Withycombe is an honor and a testament to our design-build excellence which extends to all of our regional operations and projects,” said Brian Ruffner, Business Development Manager for Rosendin Electric’s Oregon office in Hillsboro.

Rosendin Electric Named to the NCEO 2012 Employee Ownership 100 List

Latest Top 100 List Shows Rosendin Electric as Largest Privately Owned Electrical Contractor in the Nation.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 24, 2012) — Rosendin Electric (http://www.rosendin.com) has been named the nation’s largest 100% employee-owned electrical contractor by the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO, http://www.nceo.org). In the latest ranking for 2012, the NCEO has included Rosendin Electric as one of the top 100 largest employee-owned companies, and is the largest electrical contractor to make the list.

To qualify for the NCEO Top 100 list, a company must have the majority of its stock owned by an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) or some other board-based employee ownership plan. In total, the companies that made the 2012 list employ more than 687,000 people, including Rosendin Electric with more than 2,500 employee-owners. The NCEO estimates there are currently 10,900 ESOPs in the United States, employing more than 10.3 million people, with almost $900 billion in assets. About one-third of the companies named to the NCEO Top 100 are 100% employee-owned.

“Rosendin Electric continues to grow thanks to our dedicated team of employees working in offices across the country and abroad. As members of a team, we look out for the best interest of our teammates to ensure everyone’s work is done safely, with the utmost quality, and with results that exceed our customer’s expectations. Being an employee-owned company gives everyone a stake in our growth and we know that we can count on everyone on the team to contribute to our ongoing success,” said Tom Sorley, Chairman and CEO of Rosendin Electric.

According to research by the NCEO, the National Bureau of Economic Research, Joseph Blasi and Douglas Kruse of Rutgers, and many others, employee-owned companies tend to grow at a significantly faster rate, have much lower turnover, and are much more financially stable than comparable non-employee-owned companies. Moreover, those working for employee-owned companies accumulate about three times what the typical employee in non-employee ownership companies accumulate in their retirement plan. Details on this research, as well as the full Employee Ownership 100 list, can be found on the NCEO Web site (http://www.nceo.org).

Rosendin Electric’s Sam Lamonica Chosen as Finalist for 2012 Best CIO by Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and San Francisco Business Times

Lamonica Singled Out for Harnessing Mobile Technology for Construction Sites and Improving Procurement Processes.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 29, 2012) — Sam Lamonica, CIO of Rosendin Electric, one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and a 100% employee-owned company, was named a finalist for the 2012 CIO Awards by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times. Sam was one of three finalists in the Private Company category.

The Bay Area Business Journals selected Sam because of his innovative work adapting mobile computing technology for construction and implementing new paperless supply tracking and procurement processes. Under his leadership, Rosendin Electric has been equipping field personnel with mobile technology such as smart phones and iPads and adding mobile construction solutions from vendors like Vela to provide workers remote wireless access to materials lists, blueprints, QA/QC and safety checklists, vendor data, and more. Sam also introduced a new paperless procurement system for handling orders, billing, and invoices that saved the company $80,000 in the first year. With the help of Sam’s technology initiatives, Rosendin Electric has seen a faster turnaround on construction projects, and financial savings for both the company and its clients.

In commenting on his nomination, Sam noted that the best advice he ever received was “about the importance of ‘MBWA’ (Management by Walking Away). You get out of your office, get out of your chair, get in front of your end users often and understand their needs. Be in front of them a lot. I practice that all the time, I teach it to my direct reports, and get great customer service.”

“Sam’s technological innovations have made a tremendous contribution to the ongoing success and growth of Rosendin Electric,” said Tom Sorley, the company’s CEO. “His expertise and collaborative management style make him a welcome member of our management team, and his contributions have had a real impact on our operational efficiency, our responsiveness to our partners and our clients. Sam’s positive approach continues to win the praises of his staff and peers, and we are pleased that he has received this recognition from the Business Journals as well.”

Phoenix Business Journal Ranks Rosendin Electric First Among Electrical Contractors for 2011

High-Profile Projects and State-of-the-Art Construction Techniques Put Rosendin Electric at Top of List for Second Year in a Row.

Tempe, AZ, USA – (May 30, 2012) — The Phoenix Business Journal has named Rosendin Electric, one of the nation’s largest private electrical contractors and a 100% employee-owned company, the top electrical contractor for 2011 as ranked by gross sales. This marks the second year in a row that Rosendin Electric has been named the top electrical construction company by the Phoenix Business Journal. Rosendin Electric also ranked number two in 2009.

Based on an independent survey, the Phoenix Business Journal selected Rosendin Electric number one among the area contractors with $117 million in local sales for 2011, up $8 million from 2010 when Rosendin Electric took top honors with $109 million in annual regional sales. Even though Rosendin Electric has 30 percent fewer employees, the company outranked the second runner up by $24 million in revenue or more than 20 percent.

“Our reputation continues to grow, and our Arizona office has been instrumental in helping the company expand its business throughout the Southwest,” said Mike Greenawalt, Vice President of Southwest Operations for Rosendin Electric. “Our commitment to excellence, safety, and innovation, and our ability to complete work on time and within budget is what allows us to continue to outpace our competition. The fact that we have ranked at the top of the Phoenix Business Journal list of area contractors provides independent evidence of our ongoing success.”

According to Greenawalt, part of the success for the Tempe office is due to a number of high-profile projects, including wiring a new campus for a noted technology firm and construction work on the new Maricopa County Courthouse, which was completed in February 2012. The Rosendin Electric Tempe office has been setting new standards in electrical construction best practices, especially in Building Information Modeling (BIM). Fred Meeske, who was instrumental in bringing new computer modeling practices to the Maricopa County Courthouse project, was recently named to the newly created position of Corporate Director of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Services for Rosendin Electric with responsibility for training and setting new BIM standards for the entire company.
