Webinar to be held on October 24; will address warning signs of PTSD, how the disorder impacts a couple’s relationship and tips for managing PTSD

Buffalo, NY, October 17, 2012 – Military spouse website, SalutetoSpouses.com today announced a new webinar in its yearlong “Salute to Homecoming” campaign. The webinar, titled “How to Recognize PTSD and Keep it from Ruining Your Marriage” will be held on October 24 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. EDT. By highlighting signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how the disorder affects a military couple’s relationship, the webinar will dive deep into an issue impacting the lives of many military families.

The webinar’s featured speaker is Nicole Pukay-Martin, PhD. Dr. Pukay-Martin received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she specialized in couple-based interventions, psychopathology and health problems. Dr. Pukay-Martin is completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychology at Ryerson University. Her current research and clinical interests involve examining the interpersonal effects of PTSD and couple-based treatments for PTSD. She is part of a team investigating interpersonal factors involved with the development and maintenance of PTSD. She is also assisting with a trial of Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy for PTSD versus Prolonged Exposure among U.S. troops.

PTSD continues to be a pervasive condition among veterans. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD estimates 11-20 percent of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars develop PTSD.

“The instances of diagnosed PTSD are increasing and with troop draw downs and overall military cut backs, the effects are impacting family life more than ever,” said Allison Perkins, SalutetoSpouses.com editor and military spouse. “This is an important issue to our military spouse community. Webinar to be held on May 21; Expert and veteran Retired Colonel James Martin to discuss strategies military families can use to ensure the four pillars of well-being are part of their lives

Buffalo, NY, May 15, 2012 – SalutetoSpouses.com today announced the next installation in its Salute to Homecoming webinar series, “Is it Supposed to be Like This?” focusing on topics surrounding the family transition that happens after a deployed service member returns home. The webinar, titled “Is it Supposed to be Like This: Coping with the Change, Stress and Chaos of Military Life,” will be held on May 21 at 11 a.m. EDT and will highlight coping strategies military spouses can use to navigate the ups and downs of military life. The webinar is offered for free for all military spouses and their families.

The webinar will be led by combat veteran and Retired Army Colonel James (Jim) Martin. Colonel Martin spent 26 years in the Army Medical Department and is a licensed independent clinical social worker and a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work and has more than 40 years of professional social work practice. As a combat veteran Colonel Martin is very in tune with the unique issues military families face. Additionally, both during his active and duty and since his retirement, he has served in many roles that address mental health issues among members of the military and their families. Some of his published work includes serving as one of the primary authors of “What We Know About Army Families: 2007 Update” (Technical Report & Video), contributing to the development of the “Army Chief of Staff’s White Paper on Army Families” and editing “The Gulf War and Mental Health: A Comprehensive Guide” (Praeger, 1996).

“Military life is challenging and a unique experience for every family. The well-being of military family members is especially challenged during times of transition, such as while PCS-ing and during deployment and reintegration because the change can often alter routines making even every day tasks seem impossible,” said Colonel Martin. “Addressing the four pillars of well-being: exercise, diet, managing stress and building social connections, is important for all individuals and especially for military families whose lives are in constant motion. Creating a plan that encompasses all four pillars will help spouses, and others, manage those more hectic moments of military life.”

SalutetoSpouses.com Launches New Resource to Help Military Spouses Navigate Homecoming Transition

Salute to Homecoming offers personal stories, articles from experts and tips for reintegrating a service member into the family routine; kicks off yearlong series of free live events with webinar on March 27

Buffalo, NY, March 20, 2012 – SalutetoSpouses.com today announced the launch of “Salute to Homecoming,” a new web resource for military spouses featuring articles from experts, first-hand stories, tips and more to support spouses as they welcome home a deployed service member. Additionally, Salute to Homecoming will host a series of free podcasts and webinars throughout the year that will explore specific issues military spouses face as service member reintegrate into “normal” life after deployment. A webinar, titled “Is it Supposed to Be Like This?: Military Spouses Share Homecoming Highs and Lows,” will kickoff the free series on March 27 at 12:00 p.m. EDT.

Five contributors from SalutetoSpouses.com, who are also military spouses, will host the webinar. The panelists are:

* Samantha Carroll – An army Spouse and SalutetoSpouses.com contributor, Samantha has been married to CW2 Michael Carroll for five years. As an apache pilot he is TDY often and has deployed to Afghanistan once. Samantha and her 3-year-old daughter are preparing for Michael to deploy again to Afghanistan. The family is currently stationed in Hunter Army Air Field in Georgia.

* Jan Wesner Childs – An army Spouse and SalutetoSpouses.com contributor, Jan has been married to Mark Wesner for 21 years. Jan has spent much of her career as a journalist covering the military and deploying with U.S. troops so she understands the difficulties of deployment from both the homefront and the battlefield. The family has endured multiple short deployments as well as two that were a year long. The couple has two children and is currently stationed in Germany.

* Stephanie Loaiza – A navy spouse, Stephanie has been married to Petty Officer First Class Andrew Loaiza for eight years. He has spent 18 months on various ships and submarines deployed in oceans around the world. Stephanie rarely knows where he is actually located or when she will be able to call or even email him again.

* Allison Perkins – An army spouse and SalutetoSpouses.com editor, Allison has been married to Sgt. First Class John Marlow for 11 years. John has spent a total of 48 months deployed to the Mideast since 2003. Allison has spent time as a journalist embedded with troops deployed to both the Pacific and Iraq. The couple temporarily moved their family to Kuwait in 2005 so that Allison could travel into Iraq and work from the frontlines. Now, John, Allison and their five children, ages 9, 8, 4, 1 and 5 months, are stationed in Hawaii.

* Sarah Young – An army spouse, Sarah has been married to Maj. Bill Young for ten years. In that time, the couple has pcs’d six times, moving between Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Louisiana and Maryland. They recently relocated to Kansas. Sarah has served as an FRG leader and key spouse at nearly every command. Now the couple and their three children, ages 9, 7 and 5, are preparing for Bill’s fifth tour to the Mideast.

“When your spouse comes home after a deployment it’s exciting to have your whole family together again, but finding a new rhythm as a unit can be challenging when you’ve gotten used to running the household and making decisions on your own. Salute to Homecoming will bring together insights from experts and the real experiences of military spouses to provide practical information,” said Ms. Perkins, Editor of SalutetoSpouses.com. “The webinar will be a terrific way to start the conversation; there is something really special about getting a group of military spouses together to talk about the topics important to us.”

The military spouse support webinar will feature both a moderated discussion from panelists discussing everything from challenges they faced, rituals or traditions they’ve developed over multiple deployments and other life lessons learned while being married to the military. The webinar, “Score a New Job Before Packing Your First PCS Box,” will be held on December 8 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST and highlight strategies military spouses can use to find a new job before they arrive at their next duty station.

Kristina Saul, a military spouse and career expert, will lead the webinar. Ms. Saul has been a Navy spouse for 23 years and is a virtual event producer for Milicruit, producing online job fairs that help military retirees and their spouses connect with companies around the nation. During her husband’s career in the Navy, Ms. Saul held 13 different jobs during 12 moves, including positions in retail management, finance and non-profit organizations, as well as serving as an executive assistant to a two-star admiral’s spouse.

During the webinar, Ms. Saul will offer tips for preparing a resume, searching for a job before arriving at a duty station and landing an interview. Specific strategies will include leveraging military spouse networks to make connections, turning a house-hunting trip into a job-hunting trip, increasing a job candidate’s marketability and leveraging an overlooked asset – being a military spouse.

“This webinar will show military spouses how to not only find a job, but how to build a resume to eventually land a job they love. Moving and finding new employment can be a big undertaking, but by planning a job search before the movers pack the first boxes, a spouse can help create a career path that achieves their professional and personal goals,” said Ms. Saul.
