See inside iconic London buildings usually off-limits to the public

LONDON, September 10, 2014, ‘Revealing’ is the theme of Open House London in 2014, the hugely popular free annual event opportunity which gives visitors to London the opportunity to see inside over 800 buildings, both public and private. Four buildings – 10 Downing Street, EDF Energy London Eye, Gray’s Inn and Room by Antony Gormley at the Beaumont Hotel – are available by public ballot but the majority of the other buildings operate on a first come, first served policy so anyone can see inside iconic London buildings like the ‘Gherkin’ and BBC Television Centre, before its redevelopment, if they’re prepared to queue.

LondonTown.com: Four exciting designers prepare to take over one of London’s best museums

The Design Museum’s Designer In Residence 2014 exhibition will explore the theme of Disruption as the annual event enters its fourth year. The exhibition encourages four rising designers to take over a gallery at the Design Museum in London Bridge and fill it with their most disruptive ideas between 10th September 2014 and 8th March 2015. The museum is located on the Thames near London Bridge, where it is close to some of the best restaurants, shops and hotels in London. For more information about London Bridge and to book rooms in London hotels, see LondonTown.com.

The four designers that will feature at the Designers In Residence 2014 exhibition are James Christian, Ilona Gaynor, Torsten Sherwood and Patrick Stevenson-Keating. Each has responded to the theme of ‘disruption’ with a specially developed project, showcased for the first time at the Design Museum. These will include looks at housing, featuring hypothetical housing models for the city; law, exploring the eccentricities within the judicial system with props, drawings, maps and models; play, presenting an alternative archetype for the construction toy, moving beyond the familiar building brick and offering new possibilities in the form of simple cardboard discs that overlap, bend and join to create forms in an almost endless array of combinations; and finance, q uestioning our use of financial technologies with a new cash machine, currency and devices for credit card payments.

Alongside the Designers in Residence 2014 exhibition will be a series of events including sketching tours, designer talks, and evening socials. LondonTown.com: Celebrate the wild side of British film at The Portobello Film Festival

The Portobello Film Festival was started in 1996 and was intended to provide a forum for new film makers to show their films. The festival has been dubbed the wild side of Brit film and is one of the biggest celebrations of independent film in Europe.

In the past, film makers such as Guy Richie and Don Letts have both shown films at the Festival, Hexstatic showed their stunning “Natural Rhythm Trilogy” along with Giles Thacker’s (Orbital) image wizardry and Phil Smith presented the only public showing of his Metalhedz/Blue Note documentary.

This year the festival is comprised of three main events, the Portobello free London film festival, the Portobello free rock and roll film festival and the Portobello free world film festival.

The London film festival will feature non-stop, hot off the edit suite London movies. Most of which will be shorts. The rock and roll film festival boasts the latest music movies plus live surprises and Irish films. The world film festival features new and exciting international films from all over the world.

This year screenings will take place in the Kensington Park Hotel, Westbourne Studios and a pop up cinema under the Westway. London Hotels Offer Discounts for Notting Hill Carnival

The Notting Hill Carnival has been injecting noise and colour into London’s West End since 1966, when it was established by the Caribbean community. It is now Europe ‘s biggest street party, featuring floats, costumed dancers, calypso and soca musicians, and in excess of a million revellers of all ages. To coincide with the August Bank Holiday event, booking website LondonTown.com has announced discounted rates on a number of London hotels in the area.

The Carnival Bands start at around 9am on Sunday 25th August and at the same time on Monday 26th. The Sunday is officially designated Children’s Day, and Monday is for Adults. Dozens of Djs will entertain the crowds across Static Sound Systems 40 rigs. The usual mix of latin jazz, reggae, garage, hip hop and samba will dominate the decks. Highlights include Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues stage, which emits sounds heavy on the jazz-reggae.

Visitors are advised to use public transport as most of the local roads are closed to vehicles. Some underground stations may be temporarily closed if they become overcrowded, so revellers should check their planned route before departing.

Probably the egalitarian highlight of the London summer, the Notting Hill Carnival is free of charge for everyone, but partiers coming from outside the capital might be able to make use of LondonTown.com, which has recently announced discounts on a number of London hotels close to the action.

Among the London hotels participating in the offer, the Abbey Court Notting Hill has cut 27% off the standard room rate for double and twin rooms. The discount brings the cost of a night’s stay down to £128. The Abbey Court is located on Pembridge Gardens, less than ten minutes’ walk from the heart of the Carnival.

On the same street, 10 Pembridge Gardens by Mondo is a collection of studio apartments available for nightly rental. During the Carnival, they are offering studio rooms at a 20% discount, bringing the cost of a night’s stay down to just £110.

Both deals are available exclusively when booking via LondonTown.com. Contact the website for more discounted London hotels, and for more information on this year’s Notting Hill Carnival.

Legendary Spanish restaurant elBulli goes on display at London’s Somerset House

For many of us ‘elBulli: Ferran Adrià and The Art of Food’, a new exhibition opening at the Embankment Galleries of London’s Somerset House on Friday 5th July 2013, will be as close to eating at the famous Spanish restaurant, its 50-course tasting menus, and its distinctive brand of molecular gastronomy as we will get – especially since it closed its doors in 2011.

The retrospective at the Embankment Galleries, Somerset House, gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Adrià’s unique cuisine. Chefs who worked at the restaurant under Adrià’s leadership included Heston Blumenthal whose restaurant at London restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, at the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge ranks among the most prestigious London restaurants.

The multimedia exhibition at Somerset House offers an insight into the research behind each dish, revealed through handwritten notes and sketches. Also on display are plasticine models which were made for all the dishes – and the elBulli team invented 1,846 of them – used as a means of quality control for colour, portion size and position on the plate.

The London show is a taster of what is next for elBulli – Adrià intends to reopen in 2015 with a foundation to safeguard the legacy of the restaurant and to create Bullipedia, a central resource documenting culinary history and providing research material for chefs around the world.

In addition to the exhibition, which continues until 29th September 2013, there’s the chance to meet the man himself at ‘An Audience with Ferran Adrià’ on the opening night, Friday 5th July 2013, when he will discuss the afterlife of the restaurant, and his ongoing projects. Tickets, at £25, include a complimentary drink, and free entry to the exhibition (which has a standard entry fee of £10) until 9.30pm.

From 10th July onwards visitors can see two Embankment Galleries shows when they book a joint ticket for £12.50 (£10.50 concessions), £6.25 on Mondays (excluding Bank Holidays) which includes entry into ‘elBulli: Ferran Adrià’ and ‘The Art of Food and Miles Aldridge: I Only Want You To Love Me’, a major retrospective on the London-born photographer who has works in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

For more information on all exhibitions and restaurants, new openings and the latest events in London go to LondonTown.com where a wide choice of London hotels to suit all budgets, information on restaurants, bars and cafes as well as all the major attractions is provided.
