Fulham Releases New White Paper at Strategies in Light – “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements”

Fulham White Paper Demystifies Light Performance Testing and Provides Valuable Tutorial for Anyone Interested in Lighting Certifications.

Long Beach, CA, USA — At Strategies in Light being held here this week, Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting sub-systems and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, will release a new white paper that provides an overview of new energy saving standards and LED product certifications. The white paper, entitled “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements,” is designed to help OEMs, distributors, and lighting professionals sort through the alphabet soup of today’s energy product testing and qualification as it relates to lighting products.

Product testing for certification are important to the lighting industry because they provide standardized metrics to compare product performance. Setting minimum performance thresholds promotes better quality lighting and superior luminaires for OEMs and end users. However, testing can cost manufacturers thousands of dollars for every new product brought to market. this white paper reviews strategies for product testing and how qualifying for the Design Lighting Consortium (DLC) Qualified Products List, compliance with Energy Star standards, and conforming to the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Title 24 Energy Code each play both unique and overlapping roles in lighting certification, testing, and labeling.

“OEMs and installers use DLC, Energy Star, and T24 labels to ensure that lighting products deliver optimal performance, conform to the building codes and energy conservation standards, and in many cases receive financial rebates and incentives on projects,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Certification gives customers assurance that the lighting products they buy or stock are safe and efficient. However, it’s not always easy for vendors to determine which certifications are required, or where to invest their testing dollars. This white paper should provide an informative tutorial for anyone in the lighting industry who relies on testing and verification to make product decisions.”

The new Fulham white paper outlines the testing requirements and regimens for the three most common U.S. certifications, comparing DLC, Energy Star, and Title 24 It also discusses specific requirements to for each standard and offers suggestions on ways to take advantage of overlapping requirements that can save test dollars.

Fulham will have copies of “Energy Star, DLC, and T24 Testing: Sorting through the Requirements” on hand at Strategies in Light in Booth 408. Copies also are available online at http://www.fulham.com/PDFs/Fulham-White-Paper-Energy-Star-DLC.pdf.

Fulham VP to Address Problems of Lighting Controls and the Need for Interoperable Standards at IoT Evolution

Fulham’s Russ Sharer to Show How Lighting Industry Serves as a Test Case for IoT Interoperability in Presentation on “How Smart Lighting Headaches are Delaying IoT”.

Orlando, FL, USA — For industrial lighting controls to become part of any Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure the lighting industry is going to have to overcome two primary hurdles: 1) lack of intelligence in lighting devices and 2) a lack of common control standards. That’s the primary focus of “How Smart Lighting Headaches are Delaying IoT,” a presentation to be delivered by Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham Co., Inc., at IoT Evolution to be held here January 22 -25.

Fulham is a leading supplier of programmable LED lighting sub-systems and has been working with lighting vendors and OEMs to shape the future of intelligent lighting and IoT. As Sharer notes, there already is a new category of “clever” LED lighting products with on-board intelligence and programmability. To elevate these clever devices to smart lighting requires integration as well as intelligence, providing two-way communications for device monitoring and control. This is where the lighting industry is lagging behind; adopting common communication standards that can integrate current lighting controls into an IoT infrastructure.

“The challenges the lighting community are facing are typical of many industries; how to develop a common set of protocols to integrate legacy smart devices into an IoT infrastructure, said Sharer. “Clearly, IoT is going to be the foundation for building automation, but there are too many proprietary lighting control and communications standards. Today, customers can choose between DALI, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and many more for lighting controls, but there is still no guarantee of integration with a central IoT platform.”

To complicate the interoperability issue, many vendors are creating their own flavors of popular control standards. For example, some vendors are using DALI electrically and signaling, but adding proprietary commands for basic functions. Similarly, Zigbee has multiple variants of commands for when a luminaire is turned “off,” so two luminaires can receive the same signal and one device dims while the other turns off completely, which matters when it comes to energy consumption and extending the life of the luminaire.

“The teething pains of the lighting control industry are the perfect test case for other IoT control applications,” said Sharer. “It shows that without a well-defined set of common control standards, there is no way to implement control using IoT.”

Sharer’s presentation, “How Smart Lighitng Headaches are Delaying IoT,” is scheduled to take place Thursday, January 25, at 10:00 a.m. – #IOTEVOLUTION.

Fulham’s Jeremy Ludyjan, LC to speak on “Intelligent Outdoor Lighting: The Backbone of Smart Cities” to show how intelligent LEDs are foundation for smart cities.

Los Angeles, CA, USA — The future of smart cities will start with smart outdoor lighting. That’s the subject of a presentation to lighting professionals being made by Jeremy Ludyjan, Senior Director, Field Marketing for Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications. Ludyjan is scheduled to deliver a tutorial entitled “Intelligent Outdoor Lighting: The Backbone of Smart Cities” at LightShow West being held here October 11-12.

Many cities are already adopting lighting control systems for street lights, bike paths, public parking, and illumination in public spaces using wireless platforms such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Bluetooth mesh. More vendors also are entering the market with cloud-based software and centralized computer dashboards that offer easy integration and lighting management. Studies have shown that centrally controlled lighting has a number of advantages, including dramatic energy savings and for applications such as crowd control. Ludyjan’s presentation will review the various technologies available for outdoor lighting and how urban lighting controls are laying the foundation for other smarty city applications.

The Light Show West session will include updates on the latest smart lighting technology, including:

• An overview of the different outdoor lighting control platforms;
• Potential energy savings from intelligent lighting technology;
• Additional benefits from adding intelligence to outdoor lighting; and
• The future of outdoor lighting controls.

“Smart cities are clearly in our future, but before you can bring intelligence to traffic control, parking, waste management, and other services, you have to have the infrastructure to support data communication,” said Ludyjan. “Smart lighting is the first logical step in building a control network, since adding smart street lighting can immediately save millions in energy costs while creating a control network infrastructure for other applications.”

Smart lighting is already proving beneficial to various municipalities. Los Angeles, for example, is saving an estimated $9 million annually in energy costs by replacing its aging sodium-vapor streetlights with smart LED lighting. The smart lighting poles being installed in LA also are expanding the city’s wireless networking capacity with small cells for phone carriers.

A smart city infrastructure also enables new management and urban planning solutions. For example, Singapore is using its smart city platform to monitor traffic and control littering. Barcelona is using smart city technology for street lighting, waste management, and even to alert motorists about available parking. With smart city technology in place, city managers have access to new pools of data for big data analytics.

Fulham has been working with a variety of partners on strategies to integrate its smart LED lighting into smart city control platforms. For example, Tvilight, a Dutch company specializing in wireless control and lighting control solutions, has integrated Fulham’s WorkHorse LED fully programmable, wireless outdoor lighting systems into its smart city management platform.

The tutorial session, “Intelligent Outdoor Lighting: The Backbone of Smart Cities,” is part of Light Show West and scheduled to take place from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. October 11.

Fulham HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver Recognized for Innovation in 2017 IES Progress Report

Newest HotSpot LED Emergency Lighting Driver Listed in Illuminating Engineering Society Report for Unique Programmability, Monitoring, and Diagnostics.

Hawthorne, CA, USA — Fulham Co., Inc., a leading supplier of lighting components and electronics for commercial and specialty applications, today announced that the company’s HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver has been included by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) in the 2017 Progress Report. Being listed in the 2017 IES Progress Report is a distinct honor since the annual Report showcases technically significant advancements in the art and science of lighting.

The driver was selected because of a number of innovations that were identified by the IES Progress Committee, including:

• The first constant power LED emergency driver to feature programmable power output capability;
• The first emergency driver with an integrated life data recorder to log time in standby mode; time in emergency mode, emergency events, and temperature;
• The first emergency driver to use an integrated test switch bicolor indicator light (red and green) for status and self-diagnostics; and
• Meeting the CEC Title 20 requirements for small battery chargers, as well as the specifications of the European Eco Directive.

“Inclusion in the annual IES Progress Report is a special honor since selection is made by the engineering community and is based on superior engineering, demonstrating that Fulham is truly advancing lighting technology and innovation,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “At Fulham we listen to our customers, and our R&D team is committed to developing products with functionality that addresses their needs and advances the state of illumination.”

Fulham first introduced Constant Power Emergency LED drivers in 2016 with a series of cULus-classified models that quickly gained in popularity due to their ease of installation and compliance with local emergency lighting standards. The new programmable model is designed for luminaire manufacturers looking to offer emergency capability. It uses LiFePO4 batteries to deliver a minimum of 90 minutes of power in the event of an outage, and can be programmed for lower light output to extend emergency run times.

The HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver is an example of Fulham’s growing line of clever, programmable lighting products. Programmability allows a luminaire manufacturer to stock a single driver that can be customized for different applications. For example, the HotSpot driver uses a default setting for the battery to deliver maximum output for 90 minutes, e.g. a 10W battery delivers 10W of output. It also can be programmed to extend run time, such as programming a 10W battery to run at 5W to double emergency illumination time. This means the same HotSpot device can be used in a commercial space where regulations require 90 minutes of egress lighting, or in a high-rise building that may require longer emergency illumination times.

In addition to Title 20, the HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver complies with international safety regulations, including cULus, CE and ENEC. All HotSpot LED emergency drivers come with Fulham’s 5-year warranty.

The HotSpot Constant Power programmable emergency driver has been certified to meet the CEC Title 20 specifications outlined for small battery charger systems. Title 20 affects installations in California and Oregon.

“Fulham is committed to taking the lead in supporting energy efficiency standards and ensuring that our customers have products that comply with all necessary regulations,” said Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing for Fulham. “Our constant power LED emergency lighting system has been popular since it began shipping, and now, with Title 20 compliance, our distributors and partners have an excellent emergency lighting solution for one of the most energy-aware markets in the world.”

The HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver is one of Fulham’s clever, programmable lighting products. In its default setting, the battery will deliver maximum output, e.g. a 5W battery will deliver 90 minutes of power at 5W, or a 10W battery will deliver 10W of power for 90 minutes, but the settings can be programmed to provide a longer runtime. For example, programming the driver for 5W emergency output while connected to a 10W battery will result in 180 minutes of emergency illumination. This allows luminaire OEMs and contractors to use one product for many applications and situations. The HotSpot Constant Power emergency light also features a bicolor illuminated test switch with self-diagnostics to promote greater reliability and safety.

The new HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED emergency drivers is available with four battery options, ranging from 5W to 10W rated output. The unit has UNV, 50/60Hz input with an output voltage from 16 to 55VDC. The unit provides constant output power, automatically adjusting the current as needed, and can be installed in minutes.

In addition to Title 20, the HotSpot Constant Power Programmable LED Emergency Driver complies with international safety regulations, including cURus, cULus, CE and ENEC. All HotSpot units come with Fulham’s 5-year warranty.
